Ten years ago, Muddy watched, horrified, as the man who stole her virginity chose another woman. Now, he thinks he can come waltzing back into her life? No effin’ way.
Lang chose his family, his lineage and his bloodline over his heart. Not a day has gone by that he hasn’t regretted it. Now, it’s time to put the past in the past, and claim his mate. And Lang is not a man who takes no for an answer.
NOTE: In the late 1800’s, on a homestead in New Mexico, a female shifter named Helen Cartwright was widowed under mysterious circumstances. Helen knew there was power in the feminine bonds of sisterhood, and she provided an oasis for those like herself, female shifters who had been dealt the short end of the stick. Like magic, women have flocked to the tiny town of Helen’s Corner ever since. Although, nowadays, some call the town by another name, Hell’s Crazy Corner.
WARNING: THIS BOOK IS NOT INTENDED FOR READERS UNDER AGE 18.
This is the fifth book in the She-Shifters of Hell’s Corner series. This series is a spin-off of the Bears of Burden series, although each book can be read as a standalone.
Rejected mates, misunderstandings, and angsty groveling!
I didn't love Muddy and Lang's story as much the others, but I still enjoyed it all the same. I think my biggest hangup was Lang; he was such a clueless dumbass about how he treated Muddy when they were younger, and it took me a while to forgive him. He did grovel appropriately though, and we later find out that his mother had a hand in their separation as well. Overall, this series is still one of my favorites, and I am sad that I only have one book left until it's over! ♡
Lang rejected Muddy ten years ago, so when he walks back into her life she’s reluctant to give her should-have-been mate another chance. But even with ten years and a painful history between them, the mating pull is still going strong.
If you’re looking for a simple, easy read then this story is great. If you’re looking for a polished read, with few to no grammatical errors, then you’d best look elsewhere as this one is littered with them. Honestly, I found that one of the more off putting things about the story, as I had to keep filling in the missing words. Add to that the fact that it’s supposed to be a standalone book and it doesn’t really stand alone and you’ll understand my frustration. From the moment the book started, I felt like I was missing basic information. It’s a real shame as I think the plot itself has merit. I love the story arc and the concept of the characters but I didn’t really feel any emotional connection to them. With a little editing I think this could be a great book. Of course I did jump into the series with this one, so maybe I’m slightly to blame for my confusion. Then again, if a book says it stands alone, it really should deliver. I shouldn’t be wondering about a character’s backstory in the end. It’s an important aspect of the story that Muddy is a half shifter but it’s not entirely clear which of her parents was a shifter or what her origin story really is. I also didn’t find the ending very satisfying, if I’m honest. I was rather hoping for an epilogue. Having said all that, I feel like I should reiterate the fact that I did actually like the story. It just could have been improved with a little polish and editing.
There’s something deeply satisfying about a second-chance romance where both characters have lived with the weight of their past choices, and Wolf Purebred delivers that in a way that feels both grounded and emotionally resonant. This story is about accountability, growth, and the kind of quiet courage it takes to face someone you once loved—and maybe still do.
Lang returns with full force, determined to make things right the only way he knows how: boldly and without apology. His efforts are big, messy, and often misguided, but never lacking in intent. Muddy, on the other hand, carries a decade of heartbreak like armor, unsure if letting him in again would heal her or undo everything she’s rebuilt. The tension between them simmers under the surface—not because of lingering anger, but because of everything left unsaid.
What sets this story apart is its exploration of what happens when two people assume the other holds the same truth. There’s no magical conversation that clears the air—just two wounded people trying to bridge a gap built from silence and pride. The romance burns hot, but the heart of the story lies in how misunderstanding can fester, even between fated mates. And when resolution comes, it feels earned—not because everything is explained, but because they finally choose to move forward, even if the past is still a little blurry.
I wanted to like this more. This author is really good at building tension and drama in these relationships, but the resolution doesn't match the situation. Lang rejected her for 10 years. In this whole series we are told you have to follow the mating call, if you don't there will be terrible consequences. We even see some of the other couples go through some pretty rough times before making up with their mates. But he was....okay? Muddy was okay? They didn't feel physical sensations because they were away from each other? Actually we get a sense that Muddy didn't have it easy, but its never fully explained.
The whole story line is you can't deny fate, but Lang denied and acted like mates weren't really a big deal. I get that his parents did the same thing, but physically and emotionally he would have felt repercussions from leaving Muddy the next day. We are told that the animals inside them won't let them be with someone else, but he thought she was married with kids. So this whole story didn't make any sense in the rest of the world that has been built in the 2 interconnecting series. It almost felt like it was written by someone else, but then the mate card made all the bad things better like in the other books, so I knew it must be the same author.
I was hoping for a little bit more “oomph “, this was as were the others, a quick read with a HEA and I would’ve given it three stars because truthfully that’s the highest rating for a book that’s cute with no real depth. I just really wanted the main male lead to really stick it to his parents and that fell flat. He literally was miserable with them for 10 yrs, denied his mate, was living with misconceptions about what happened, constantly was getting hit up for money, and his parents were the root cause and the confrontation was just.... lackluster and disappointing. Couple that with the fact the female lead’s name was “Muddy”. I’ve read a lot of weird names in the past, I’ve read about every genre of book and this has got to be the weirdest, not sexy name I’ve ever heard.... I mean “Muddy”??? Did I miss what it is short for? Please Jesus, tell me it’s like Mudella or something bc how do you have a steamy scene with a name like Muddy? How do you passionately climax with the name Muddy on your tongue?! 🙄
I loved reading Wolf Purebred(Shifters Of Hell’s Corner Book 5). All about Muddy Hilton a lioness shifter who is twenty-nine years old and owns the Muddy Bed & Breakfast in Hell’s Corner & Lang Millingham a purebred Wolf shifter who is thirty-four years old divorcee and a billionaire. The author wrote a story about a women who was destroyed after the man her mate she fell in love with stomped on her heart and married somebody else! Read about Lang & Muddy and see if she can ever get over him marrying somebody else, or if the new adventures will open her heart to his changed ways! The author has written an entire series about different types of shifters living in a town that supports its women from the heartache of life. If you like strong women, who are passionate and emotional then this series is for you!!
Great series. Helen's Corner New Mexico, a place for strong women, shifter of not, it is the place where five best friends live and remain great friend and allies. But now Muddy is the only one not mated. She knows who her mate is and 10 years ago he rejected her, and his family made it impossible for her stay in town so she found her way to Hell's Corner. Lang has made mistakes, and listening to his family was the mistake of a lifetime. Now is the time to try and fix it. He is off to Hell's Corner to get his mate. Muddy is not exactly happy to see him. Loved the story about second chances, and what you sacrifice to get it. This book is sad, funny, and heart warming. I recommend reading the series, but can be read as a standalone.
This has been the best so far. (I know I may have said that before, but really.) Muddy has been the main rock for her friends. She's been ok with no mate, but recently her friends have found their mates and she's lonely. I cannot for the life of me understand how Langdon was so clueless about his marriage. How did he not know his mother and sister would use any chance they had to put Muddy down. I also loved how all of her friends were there to confront Lang about what happened. He may never have understood what she was feeling otherwise. I was excited about his confrontation with his parents and a long time coming, in my opinion. Fantastic book. Looking forward to Luna's story too.
Loved this story but really struggled with Muddy, the female lead. Granted, she had been hurt terribly by Lang’s “rejection”, but there were so many other ‘extras’ involved that made what happened so much worse. Not wanting to talk at all with Lang when he showed up ten years later got old after her first five denials and spews of hate. I persevered through numerous replaying of her reasons - all repetitive - and was able to watch Lang evolve as his true self held strong and, finally, Maddy’s tragedy opened her eyes. Once again, really did not like Muddy, but there was the storyline that flowed well and the rest of the characters were so lifelike and believable … I couldn’t dock the score.
This time we delve into Muddy's past and find her mate. Lang and Muddy connected when she was just eighteen and then he broke her heart when he married someone else. Lang made a mistake many years ago and now that he has found out where Muddy is living and that she is single, he means to fix all of that. Unfortunately for him. Muddy is not so sure this wolf is for her. Her lioness wants him since they are mates, but Muddy can't let go of her hurt and pain. Can these two ever get back on the same page?
I liked Muddy and Lang's story. Even though they both went on to build a life without the other, neither of them ever found someone else to love.
4 STARS for Candace Ayers for this exciting paranormal romance of a pure blood wolf with a lion, these two mates were separated by old family prejudices of who is good enough & public humiliation. The passage of ten years is what it takes before the star crossed lovers paths cross and the pure bred wolf decides he is going hunting for his beautiful lion. Interesting and some good girl power of different ages, in this. WARNING: 19 &Up SEXUAL CONTENT: YES
Okay, let me start by saying that I love this series and love this author but I HATED the end of this book and I am so disappointed!! I have been waiting for Muddy's story since the very first book in this series came out and although the rest if the book was fabulous, the ending was so anti-climactic that I can taste my disappointment. You should still read the book of course, but I could really use an epilogue or something for this one. Mature eyes only due to hot 🔥 shifter loving!!!!
This book was full of emotion. It had its ups and downs.
Muddy and Lang were a couple you were rooting for. You knew that they belonged together but they were years of heartache that needed to be dealt with first.
Lang was put in a hard position when he was younger. He was more impressionable and still under his parent's thumb and he made some poor choices. He was finally owning up to them and going after what he really wanted.
Muddy was an amazing character. She was a great friend and businesswoman. I loved the crazy old ladies staying at her inn that were very protective of her.
This story was ridiculous funny too! I thought Denny 's book was funny and it was but this was so funny and worse of all everywhere Danny goes a disaster occurs!!!! 😂😂😂😂 Hilarious!!! Anyway it was story & loved the ending. Loved when she is talking to the wall angry at her & him! I m still laughing!!!!! Oh man.... Best books ever!!!! 💖💖💖💖💕💕💕💕💕💞💞💞💞💞💞💞😂😂😂😂😂😍😍😍😍😍
We finally meet Muddy's mate, Lang. Holy moly do the sparks fly between these two! Not just the good ones either. I found their bickering, their fighting, to be so romantic and so true to who they are. The constant back and forth was so comical to read. On the other hand the emotions were so real, so heart felt.
Lang and Muddy were young and in love 💘. When Lang finally realized that Muddy was,his mate it was too late. Flash forward ten years later and Lang is tracking Muddy to find her. Both Lang and Muddy had a lot of growing up to do. Once they understood that they were meant to be tighter they got their HEA!
Another successful Hell's Corner book. Totally love this series and all of the characters. I didn't think Muddy would ever get her happy ever after but I shouldn't have worried this one was just as hilarious as the previous 4. Now we need some fresh blood of females to move into town and the series can continue.
Muddy and Lang was another great Hell's Corner romance. They were young mates who were turn apart by his stuck-up, meddling parents. After a decade apart, it all comes together for them. I still loved the story, but I do not think it was as fluid as the others.
Always fun to visit Hell’s Corner. As always, Candace gives us great character development and an interesting storyline. You can’t help but love the main characters and feel for their time lost. Biggest complaint is the story just...ends. It would be nice to have an epilogue or just a little more HEA at the end...might just be me.
You know what drives me crazy about these books. She leaves threads undone or uncovered. Why did he go to the church? Why didn’t he talk to her before he went? How did he not hear what happened? If she was his mate how did he think she ran off with someone else? It just doesn’t make any sense.
I loved this series for the strong women presented. I was never disappointed. I can't wait for the next story from this author, they have all been awesome. Yes, I've read them all!
I love the women of Bell's Corner. They are strong, passionate, independent women. Muddy mate left her 10 year ago. Now Lang is back and will stop at nothing to get her back. The boo
This book was cute, funny and sad. To have your mate choose another woman and then take so many years to chase you down. The interactions between Muddy and Lang were great. The mating bond was there but Muddy couldn't get past the hurt. I couldn't blame her.
I wasn’t bothered by any grammatical errors... Friends talking about the h behind her back, the H being so stupid going through with the marriage, him not knowing/ever hearing about what his mother did to the h in front of a huge audience at his wedding, and so many more things bothered me.
Love how each book picks up from where the previous ones left off! The story has action, humor, adventure, love, and steamy hot romance with awesome characters. This book won't disappointed in any way and so ready to read the next book in the series?
I liked the storyline but felt it ended way to fast and suddenly. There were also grammar errors. I just wish there was more. It’s like they mated and now everything is great. I probably will read the next...
Muddy and Lang both hurting and both wanted something that is missing. All i can say is wow. Loved their story. A love story with true friendship. Sometimes blood doesnt know the best and you have to trust your heart.
I don't like short stories normally. But Candace Ayers is the master of short stories and making them rich and full of adventure without letting the reader down. Must read!
