Jag var bara sex år då jag hade klart för mig, att jag helst av allt ville lära mig rita, när jag blev stor, och allra helst rita i sagoböcker. Min bror och jag brukade ofta sitta och rita tillsammans. Han ritade vikingafejder och grekiska hjältestrider, medan jag ritade barn och stugor och landskap. Hans ritningar var säkert mycket bättre än mina. Jag kommer ihåg att jag beundrade dem mycket, fast jag nog tyckte att hans hjältar hade väl korta ben." Så berättar Elsa Beskow om sin barndom "När jag var liten" publicerad första gången i Barnbiblioteket Saga nr 35 (texten ovan tagen ur Solägget 1986) I samma berättelse skriver Elsa Beskow om hur roligt det var att gå i skolan och få lära sig läsa, hennes favoritbok var en tjock Topeliusbok som hon släpade med sig överallt och läste högt ur för sina syskon.
Redan som liten satte hon ihop långa sagor som hon berättade för sin ett år äldre bror, "Vanligen gick det till så, att han släpade mig med sig till en vrå, satte sig själv i vägen för mig, så att jag ej kunde rymma, och befallde: berätta nu! Och jag pladdrade på så gott jag kunde. Ibland tappade jag alldeles tråden i berättelsen och frågade honom bekymrad: 'Vad menar jag, Hans?' 'Kanske menar Elsa så…' föreslog han helt beredvilligt, och så fortgick berättelsen."
Elsa Beskow föddes 1874 på Söder i Stockholm. Hennes familj bestod av mor och far, fyra systrar och en bror. När Elsa Beskow var 15 år dog hennes far och modern blev ensam med barnen. Familjen flyttade till moderns ogifta yngre syskon som bodde tillsammans. Mostrarna och morbrodern blev verklighetens förebilder till Tant Grön, Tant Brun, Tant Gredelin och Farbror Blå.
Under åren 1892-95 utbildade sig Elsa Beskow till teckningslärare vid Tekniska skolan, det var också då som hon började att teckna för barn. 1897 gifte hon sig med Natanael Beskow, präst och konstnär. Paret fick sex söner, vilka många gånger kom att stå modell för barnen i hennes berättelser och sagor. Deras hus och vildvuxna trädgård i Djursholm fick ge inspiration till hennes besjälade blommor och växter. Elsa Beskows stil har jämförts med sekelskifteskonstnärer som Walter Crane och Kate Greenaway, men även Ottilia Adelborg. Första gången hennes bilder, bildberättelser och verser publicerades var 1894 för barntidningen Jultomten.
Barnboksdebuten kom 1897 med bilderboken Sagan om den lilla lilla gumman, en klassiker som de flesta barn känner till ännu idag. Elsa Beskow hade fått ramsan om den lilla gumman berättad för sig av sin mormor och i den första upplagan från 1897 slutar boken abrupt med gummans "Schas katta!" I nästa upplaga tyckte förläggaren på Wahlström och Widstrand att boken skulle sluta med "och katten sprang till skogs och kom aldrig mer igen" för så mindes han ramsan.
Men femtio år senare, i en ny upplaga, skrev Elsa Beskow till raden "Men kanske[br]ändå att han kom hem till slut" då flera barn blivit ledsna över det tidigare slutet.
Beskows bilder dominerade bilderbokskonsten under närmare 50 år och säkert har många av dagens bilderbokskonstnärer påverkats av hennes konst.
1952 erhöll Elsa Beskow Nils Holgersson-plaketten för sin samlade produktion. Det finns dessutom ett pris uppkallat efter henne, Elsa Beskow-plaketten, instiftat 1958 av Sveriges allmänna biblioteksförening.

I LOVE Beskow's artwork. This one offers more splendid selections and seasonal work, too. It's fun to read a collection of poetry about each month of the year for the "New Year" (okay, I'm a few weeks late, but it was checked-out at the library!) I admit that I wasn't really impressed with the poetry, but perhaps some of the original charm was lost in the English translation. Get this for the artwork, though!!!

Absolutely enchanting! Each mesmerizing page spread needs to be framed and hung on display throughout the year!
You and your children will delight in the imagery and descriptive stanzas for each month. But don’t try rhyming too much; this book was first written in Swedish and then translated over. I’m sure it’s lost a smidge of its original charm, but not much.
This will be a traditional read for us!

Cleanliness: there is a picture of three naked children swimming in the water. Other than their butt cheeks, nothing else is detailed.

First published in 1927 as Årets Saga, this poetic celebration of the seasons from one of Sweden's most beloved picture-books artists is - as anyone familiar with Elsa Beskow's work would know to expect - lovely to look upon, with beautiful artwork. Unfortunately, it is rather uneven, textually speaking, with poems that are sometimes awkward, and often don't read very well. I suspect that this is an issue of translation, as sometimes - especially when the rhyming scheme can be maintained, and the meter works - they are very sweet. If only I could read them in the original Swedish!
With a poem for every month - as well as some introductory pieces on the hours and days - Around the Year has the potential to be such an outstanding book, that I'm rather disappointed not be able to appreciate it more than I do. Still, Elsa Beskow fans will find much here to appreciate, with gorgeous artwork that captures the enchantment of each month of the year. I think my own favorite was the illustration for harvest-rich August (also seen on the cover), with the parade of berry-decorated forest dwellers. All in all, this is a book I would recommend primarily to fans of this author/artist, rather than to general young readers looking for seasonal titles.

In verse and picture, young readers hear about the days of the week and the months of the year. The verses are short and the pictures are fun, so I'm guessing that most kids will like this little book.
I hope to find an original copy so I can see the art in the original color tones.

Ik vind dit een heel fijn (kinder)boek. De prenten zijn mooi en spreken de fantasie aan. De tekst is poëtisch, rijmende en originele woordkeuze. Het is mooi om het jaar, maand per maand, op deze manier intens(er) te beleven met een kind.

A book that adults may well warm to and buy, especially if they were familiar with it in their childhood, but that I can only see the modern young audience struggling to enjoy. It's a calendar of illustrated verse, so we start with the mnemonic about the lengths of the months I always found utterly pointless, and after an introduction to the weekly calendar we get a page of verse per month, all added to by a charming full-colour image. But the poems just don't seem to go anywhere, or nowhere a young me would have liked much even when the age of the target readership. Blank verse, lists of autumn berries and other nature notes – the whole looks very easy on the eye and well-meaning, but certainly reads a hundred years old.

Vast en zeker een klassieker voor een reden, maar wat mij betreft zijn zowel de tekst als de illustraties niet meer van deze tijd. Kon mij iig niet bekoren :)

Another Elsa Beskow book. It's a sweet read, with poems about the days of the week, the months of the year, etc... Some of the illustrations are just darling, like the star children in January, and the whole berry celebration in August. Some of the translated poetry is really lovely, but a few of the poems need work... May is my favorite:
May comes but once a year,
the dancing month,
the sky light and high,
the birch trees bursting.
May-daisy time,
and cowslip
and primrose
and harebell
and dancing anemones.
Deep down in the meadow grass,
they're all dancing
with delight,
lily-of-the-valley
nodding,
ringing her bells,
the silver trunks
lordly and slim,
their branches and silvery twigs
dancing
too
to the tune of Spring.
May comes but once a year,
the dancing month,
the sky light and high,

Not 100% sure I want this book - sort of silly poems, but illustrations are cute/beautiful

I love Beskows books! When I read them to my children they get excited to go outside.
