Leave it all behind. Really, it's not as hard or scary as it seems. Moitessier's tale of striking out on his own and meeting the challenges that presented themselves is inspiring and moving. Once you've read this, you can't go back. You will think about it forever.

His first published book, it's not very well written. But what it lacks in literary style and skill it more than makes up for in content. Start with this one, because here he's young and open to the world. Although his later books are easier to read and more polished, he becomes more set in his ways as he grows older. This book is filled with endless possibility and spiritual freedom.

4 stars are a bit generous but it was the right book at the right time and I may never read any more of his books. I've learned a lot about sailing techniques that I'll never need but a privilege to spend time with such a unique man. The most fascinating of the round the world golden globe mad men, this book earned him the money to make the boat he sailed in and a window on how he became the man to do it.

Nice to finally read where the story began. The book started out a little slow and then as the journey continued, Bernard got more passionate and philosophical which is when he is at his best as a writer. Enjoyed it a lot. Great book!

Vivement mon bateau.

If reading this doesn't make you want to sail a boat , I don't know what will.

There’s a lot of chaff to get through to the germ of this story. Great to see inside the lifestyle and how he made it work. More sailing tech talk than I wanted.
Left us hanging at the end.
