Since both my parents are born and raised in Chicago and much of my family and other friends are still there, I consider myself quite knowledgeable on Chicago. However, I did learn some of the earliest history of the city. Again, another brief but concise read about the history of a very important American city. I also loved how the infamous mobsters were mentioned, that was fun to revisit also!

HIGHLY recommended!!!

This is a condensed book on the history of Chicago from the days of the Native Americans to the present. In my opinion, it's a good introductory for those who wish to learn the events that shaped the history of Chicago without going completely in-depth on all of the details. At least it held my interest from start to finish.

It began with the tribes of Native Americans that settled in the area and the advent of the first white settlers when it became a popular fur trading post. Through a series of treaties the Native Americans were eventually removed from the area and as canals and railroads were ushered in, Chicago bloomed into a hub of many businesses; later the catalyst of the Industrial Revolution. That of course brought the era of robber barons, the sweatshops with children as young as 5 years old working, deplorable working conditions and and the industrial accidents that caused loss of life and injuries; problems that would take decades of strikes and labor riots to solve.

The book also covers problems with air and water pollution, and the huge problem of street sanitation which still exists to this day. Other events are the establishment of the Chicago Board of trade and the Chicago Mercantile exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank, the great Chicago fire, the two World's Fairs that were held there, the Great Depression, racial segregation, and much more.

Famous people covered in the History of Chicago include Marshall Fields in the earlier 1800s, Frank Lloyd Wright, William Seward and Abraham Lincoln, Prohibition and Al Capone, Allan Pinkerton and his detective agency, the mayoral terms of Richard J Daley and his son, Richard M Daley, Martin Luther King Jr., Oprah Winfrey, and Barack & Michelle Obama, among others.

Even Chicago style hot dogs and deep dish pizza made the cut. There is a lot of information packed into a relatively short read. A couple of mistakes and grammatical errors, but overall, I thought the book was quite well-written and I enjoyed it.

A decent overview (if viewed from a more liberal lens), marred by a few glaring inaccuracies:

1. WWII began for Chicago when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in FLORIDA.
That would have been the military maneuver of the millennium, and the States should have surrendered out of sheer awe of Japanese prowess.
In all seriousness, how did that slip past the editor (or even writer)? Was he fantasizing about his upcoming vacation and made a mental slip?
2. Corned beef was invented by the Irish in Chicago.
Corned beef existed (in ENGLAND) before Chicago was even founded.

The work gives enough general knowledge for a basic understanding, but one may want to double-check the facts further.

This book, part of a series, is a quick read on some of the highlights of Chicago. It covers a variety of pertinent issues, but lacks depth in any one. Good for a fast review of the city--and stimulates further research and reading in a variety of subjects. Topics include: Native Americans, railroads, sewage and pollution, early Chicago economy and start of the Board of Trade, skyscrapers, the nomination of Abraham Lincoln at the 1860 convention in Chicago, the 1893 World's Fair, organized crime, etc. If someone wants a cursory read of Chicago's history, and doesn't mind lots of gaps--this will be fine.

I started this series almost by accident, finding it as a recommendation from Kindle after finishing another state-relatesld book. History of Chicago was a nice, straightforward, and easy-to-read book. The pacing was succinct but enough to give you the information you needed about the topic. The chapters were short, which definitely helps if you're in a slump and want something quick to read. I am hoping to continue reading more within the US states series.
