After an EMP cripples North America, a mother risks everything to save her family.
Deadly winter winds howl through the Shenandoah Valley. Amidst the miles of snow-drenched wilderness, driven psychologist Naomi Baxter hunts the lawless savages who took her daughter. Working alongside a group of unexpected allies, Naomi brings the fight to those who robbed her, destroyed her home, and broke her family, all while trying to keep her humanity intact.
I did come pick up book 1 without reading book 2, but the opening scene is set pretty well so I gather what's going on ... as it goes on, there is a lot of redundancy, to the point that I'm glad I didn't read book 1, because repetition isn't exciting to me.
The writing is pretty weak. The storytelling isn't bad and the world-building is okay, with more practice, I think the author could improve their craft, but I'm not excited to read anything else by them any time soon.
Overall, I'd rate this as "it's okay", 2 stars here on Goodreads. That may come out to 3 on Audible, I'll be sure to check their system.
Audio: I listened to the audiobook and I strongly advise against doing the same unless you enjoy robots speaking. It's absolutely awful. Sounds 100% like AI. I cannot believe an actual person narrated this. If one really did, they should work on their delivery, or something. I've listened to actual AI-read documents that sounded more human than this "narrator" did. Is it possible this "narrator" is AI that someone is presenting as a person? That sounds insane but ... this audiobook sounds completely like a robot or AI read it so ... here we are.
The poor editing continued but the story arc that started in prequel, continued in first book has concluded in this second and final installment of the series.
Proving to be a more hardy and resilient to adapt team Naomi Baxter and husband Calvin prevail with help against a larger foe while mourning their losses along the way as well as learning that might does not always equal victory.
Especially against those with more to lose than the ones they are pitted against.
Now started on the next phase two months later after the EMP with a new group of characters and a different group of people that have created their own version of a new way of life that threatens everyone unwary enough to cross their paths.
What would you do to keep your family safe after the total failure of the government?
Story follows one family determined to stay together and protect their daughter as civilization falls apart around them. It's a dog eat dog world and the wolves are trying to take over. The story has the feeling of truth to it, this writer has studied human interactions and predicts what the likeliest outcome will be. The writing is very good, but a better proofreader needs to go over the manuscript and fix those annoying typos.
I found this book to be exciting and believable. Naomi is my new hero. It was amazing to see the change in everyone when they realized they had to change in order to live. This is the first series by This author that I have read but it will not be my last. The only negative thing I have to say is i wish the book had been written as 1 book instead of being broken into 3 books. Great read for anyone that likes excitement and danger, not for the faint of heart
I choose to give the book 5 stars because it was a great story. Like many independently published books, it was a very good story but needed proofreading. I know I am not alone in feeling that correct grammar and other small errors prevent a great story from becoming a great novel.
The series kept my interest and made me want to hurry to the next chapter. The characters were believable and so different from each other. Looking forward to reading more.
I really enjoyed reading these. The challenge of keeping your family together no matter what. The question of what you would be willing to do to survive and what seperates those who take advantage and those who are surviving.
I thought that the book was about a future that might be right around the corner. We don't spend a lot of time thinking about what could happen if the world as we know it suddenly ended, this book will make you think about it. Well written.
