Thirty Years of Winter #1

The Reincarnated Prince

Rate this book
In the Kingdom of Kibus, everyone knows what a king should be. The Winter King wrote the impossible list hundreds of years ago. But can a living person be what the kingdom needs?

Chad, the eldest living son of the most powerful lord in the kingdom, has been groomed all his life for leadership & command; raised to be what would be needed to fill his father's boots; to handle power and responsibility.

Jeb, orphaned at age six, lives in the loft of a barn next to an ale house and trains horses.

The only thing they share are their birthdays - both born during the same eclipse fifteen years earlier - yet, both of them will undergo great change resulting from the consequences of a king's foolish act. Both will have to take a hard look at who they are, and what kinds of men they want to become.

It is mid-autumn in a kingdom where seasons are thirty years long, death is temporary, magical songs destroy minds, and two kings have alternated rule for over eight hundred years. But this year, the Winter Prince is missing and the Summer King's seventy-five year old body is giving out. For Chad and Jeb, more than their own lives depend on the decisions they’ll make.

A world where seasons last thirty years, magical artifacts recognize their owners from previous lifetimes, and two kings, reincarnated multiple times over hundreds of years, alternate ruling the Kingdom of Kibus.

Author Danny Macks has created an interesting new fantasy world in which powers contest for dominance.

An imposter winter prince has been recognized by the current Summer king, while the real prince runs away from both the duty and responsibility of being Winter King.

With a delightful cast of well-developed supporting characters Macks has created an interesting world, with unique conflicts to engage and entertain the reader.

Refreshing

I really enjoyed reading this. It was very different from anything I’ve read in awhile. I would have liked a little more back story in the kingdom and how their world words though, I felt a little blind going in. We follow Chad (whose last name changed frequently) and Jeb (a person who is transgender) as the kingdom is turning seasons and the winter king should be reincarnated. I won’t spoil the book, but it definitely kept me reading.
I’m looking forward to the sequel and how Jeb’s gender affects what is to come!

really not much developing of the story, there were some times where i had to go back and see if what was happening in that moment had been mentioned before, but it hadn't. characters are cute and jeb's transsexuality is covered perfectly, but i expected so much more...

I found this quite problematic. Interesting concept especially around being reincarnated into the 'wrong' gender, but the rest of the story felt quite superficial so I didn't feel the concept was explored as much as it might have been. Really hated one of the two main characters (Chad) and plot was overall fairly predictable. Overall an interesting new take on an old trope but not carried to fruition. Not bad. Maybe the sequel will solve some of these problems.
