Shinobu Ohtaka (大高 忍, born May 9, 1983 Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese manga artist. She is best known for the creation of the manga series Sumomomo Momomo and more recently, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic.
When I started this, I felt like I missed a chapter. I don't remember the last volume ending where this picks up. Moments like these is when I wish I had my own copies of these to easy check back on. So it took a few extra pages to get into reading this one.
Aladdin and team set sail once again, but each member has their own agenda to attend to. Some bittersweet and amusing moments (and a disturbing one about Alibaba's rear end). However an attack by pirates and missing children have them set on a course change.
Things may not be as they seem in this volume to trouble is on the horizon! Their new villain has me left with mixed emotions that play on the characters as well. An interesting twist to this new arc!
One thing about this series that is starting to get on my nerves is the Sinbad storyline. It touches up on his character, but then goes another direction for the majority of the volume but each bit of his character that is revealed tells me there is more to his character and role and it is important, but with long gaps, the iportance gets lost amongst the rest of the story given to us.
World: The art is okay, but I'm starting to notice the character having really extended and weird torsos, but I'm guessing this is Ohtaka's style and honestly, not a fan. The action when it does happen is a bit frantic and while looking powerful is a bit choppy and hard to follow. The world building here is a bit better than the last couple of books. With the slower story the characters and the world as a whole has time to breath and be explained more and given more definition.
Story: The story is a breather section and I like that cause it gave the main characters time to interact with each other and reorient readers to what's gonna happen next. I liked that there were moments of quiet and also fun action between the Princess and Sinbad and I like the character drama with Alibaba. The story was much more clear and focused this time around instead of jumping between multiple threads making for a smoother read.
Characters: The journey that each will take is interesting and them all growing is a good thing. I still have a problem with connecting with Aladdin but the other characters are okay. I like Mor the most and her journey I am most interested in.
Sto volume proprio bello.
This volume was a good addition to this series. It had a bit of everything. There was fighting. There was magic. There was political intrigue and manipulation. There was comedy and fan service (which I don't necessarily enjoy, but have become accustomed to because anime is anime).
Our trio has set sail, joined by the Kou prince. They now face off against a group of pirates led by their mom. Yeah, it's weird. And actually seems to be much darker than we initially realize. I'm curious to see what happens next, given her powers and all of the characters' pasts.
The Djinn equips all look amazing so far and different too, Kogyoku's on the cover is awesome!
I completely forgot about this arc in the anime and it took the beginning for me to remember it but also I'm still not 100% positive I remember exactly how it concluded so it feels like new content for me!!!
Also I've said it before but I'll say it again, Morgiana is awesome!!!
Getting intense... hmmm... i wonder who is the real villain, kou empire or sinbad? When you look at it, each one wants to fulfill their desire... to rule the world...

This volume ends the prior arc and starts the short Pirates arc. Mor is such a good character. There were some fun light moments but the drawing of the action is not so great.
I’ve been wanting to read this series for a while, but just haven’t gotten around to picking it up. But now it’s definitely high on my list.
Admittedly, since I haven’t read any of the previous books nor seen the anime, there wasn’t very much of a synopsis for the characters or story. I was more or less just thrown into the story, but thankfully it was pretty easy to follow.
The characters are all in an in-between phase at the beginning, about to head off on their own. We see some new friendships forming, some closer bonds, as well as the characters having to say goodbye for now. Alibaba and the group make up with much teasing (though I don’t know what they were fighting about), Morgiana and Hakuryu have a bit of a shy flirtation going on (mostly from Hakuryu, though, who gets adorably embarrassed around her). Aladdin is a pretty happy kid, among all this.
In the second half of the book, the group gets attacked by pirates, and that ends with a cliffhanger that I’m actually quite interested to see where goes. They’re fighting a hypnotizing mother character, which is disconcerting. Through all that, though, I’m impressed by all of their fighting abilities and magic use (particularly Morgiana and Hakuryu). They also stay underwater during a fight much longer than I think is humanly possible, but maybe that’s just me.
Overall, this volume has me more excited to catch up with the series. The artwork is really pretty, the comedy is fitting and almost cartoon exaggerated, but in a good way. I like all the characters and am interested to get to know them fully.
A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, and Erik Jansen from MediaLab PR. Thank you so, so much!
This Manga starts our humorous. I really enjoyed the characters at the beginning. The farther you read the deeper the plots become. Enjoyable at the beginning, and a must read for the later books. I can NOT wait for books 27 + Characters are real and raw. Everyone has there faults and I feel the author/artist dose a wonderful job of bringing everyones points of view, twisted though they might be, in to clear focus.
(note: I wouldn't recommend this manga for young teens. I fine the sexual innuendos pretty funny as an adult, but not really appropriate for younger audiences. Also the plot gets pretty dark at times. )
Magi continues to be a solid shonen series, though sometimes I find it hard to keep track of the story between volume releases. I'm always able to get right back into the story easily enough, but the story is getting complex enough that I will have to reread it again some day to catch all the things I'm missing on this first read through.
