Lily Barlow: The Mystery of Jane Dough

Rate this book
Lily Barlow, a quirky college student obsessed with the fictional bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, is called home from the University of Virginia to get the family bakery running after her dad's heart attack. Stuck in a sinkhole of self-pity, she finds her sleepy hometown...well...can a town actually be in a coma?

No worries. All she needs to do is hire a bakery manager, and she's not even moving back in with her family for that part. Instead, she rents an efficiency garage from Miss Delphine Walker, an old woman who Lily begins to believe may have killed someone at some point in time.

Meanwhile, Lily's overactive imagination takes a swan dive when she discovers an online clearinghouse for victims the cops can't identify. Consumed with the profiles on the website, Miss Delphine, and the candidates for the bakery manager position, she simply cannot cope with one more problem. So when Jack Turner, her best friend since kindergarten, reveals out of nowhere that he wants something more than friendship, what's a woman to do?

I received this book for a book box and was immediately captivated by the cover, which promised for an amazing story. I wasn’t disappointed. I was pulled right into the book. From the character, to the setting, to the plot. The characters are all so dynamic and well developed. I loved each of their own personalities. It was like reading about real people with real lives. The story, the mystery and the love story, was the best of the two I’ve read in quite some time. I love a good mystery and this story hit the spot.

This is the first I’ve read of Carla Vergot, and I guarantee it won’t be the last!

If you like mystery or romance, I highly recommend this book!

At first I thought Lilly Barlow was overly detailed, but I quickly realized that was actually a necessary part of her character. She's strong and tough, but she really lets Jack lead her around and he ended up on my 'not favorite' list.

The book has some good twists and it's really more like two books in one; a murder mystery and a like/love story. Lilly's character isn't the only thing that's complex. It's a good first book in what promises to be an interesting series.

This was one of the most fun reads I've found in a LONG time. It's a great mix of a friends-to-lovers romance and cozy mystery. Being from the South(ish), I especially enjoyed the use of Southern dialect and familiar scenes-- no spoilers here, but there are some moments with home-raised chickens that made me laugh out loud, because they reminded me so much of my childhood summers at my grandmother's house.

I noticed another reviewer who disliked the unique versions of "For the love of..." (and other colloquial sayings) but I found them utterly charming and looked forward to finding the next one. As someone who often intentionally butchers common phrases in a similar manner, I'm mentally calculating how to add some of them to my repertoire.

Overall, I found this to be an incredibly pleasant book and can't wait for the next book in the series!

This book hits the sweet spot at the intersection of chick lit and cozy mystery: a romcomstery, as the author puts it. I have been disappointed by several mysteries that seemed too scripted and by-the-numbers, peopled with characters who were only there to further the plot. Lily and her circle of quirky friends are anything but by-the-numbers. It was easy to believe that even those not solving mysteries were leading full and interesting lives when not on the page.

The book opens with college student Lily Barlow reluctantly returning home to Marshall, VA, to help deal with the family bakery, closed due to her father’s heart attack. Her mission: hire a competent manager to run the place so she can return to school for the fall quarter. Meanwhile, her lifelong best friend, hunky Jack Turner, floors her with the idea that they should start dating each other. She’s attracted to him, but will it ruin their friendship? Then a typo in an internet search leads her to the Doe Network, a database of unidentified murder victims, where she recognizes a tattoo as possibly belonging to an acquaintance she met a year ago. Her inner sleuth activated, Lily is determined to find her friend’s people so she can share the sad news. All this, and deal with her anxieties around Jack’s haunted house and her own tormentor, a chicken named McNugget.

Lily and Jack have great, sexy chemistry, as well as a genuinely funny bantering relationship. The legalistic way they establish ground rules for their interactions is a hoot. These two clearly have a long history, but with many new avenues to explore. Lily is entertaining on her own, too. Her exclamations and euphemisms are hilarious and creative; I don’t think she ever repeats herself. I cracked up over the long list of inappropriate candidates for the bakery manager position and all the insider Jeep lingo. And then there’s the sleuthing, which goes from obsessive intellectual exercise to an act of compassion toward a family that might have been looking for a lost daughter. A quick and entertaining read with a satisfying ending.

When Ms. Vergot reached out to me on Bookstagram about reading her books for review my initial response was to say no. But she described the series as "romcomsteries" and something niggled in my mind and I asked whether they were anything like the Evanovich books featuring Stephanie Plum! Her response came quickly and she told me that her character, Lily Barlow, is slightly obsessed with Stephanie, and so I immediately said yes. The Evanovich books are ones that I return to over and over, whenever I need something familiar and fun.

And Lily Barlow could easily become another standby series -- books that become ragged from wear. I lay in bed late at night listening to the audiobooks (which I purchased so that I could read when I couldn't read the dead-tree versions she sent to me) and found myself stifling giggles so as not to wake my husband. Lily is quick-witted, funny, likable, and a bit naive and silly at times.

The book introduces us to Lily who has returned to the town in which she was raised to help her dad and uncle in their bakery. She is determined to return to college as soon as possible. Of course this is a mystery, so Lily soon finds herself embroiled in a murder (or more than one). And her childhood best friend, Jack, is soon putting himself in her path looking for romance. I found friendship/romance believable and I was quickly invested in her responses to Jack.

There were a few things that I hoped for more of... one of the best aspects of the Stephanie Plum series is the huge cast of characters. Grandma Mazur, Lula, Joyce Barnhardt, Ranger, Joe, mom, dad, sister and the rest add so much texture, tension and humor to those books. Because I am so familiar with them they have become one big ongoing story -- a bit of a funny soap opera. Of course, this also makes it difficult to remember when I became attached to them. When were they each introduced? When did they become tangible and real? I don't know. But I am hoping that Ms. Vergot will add to her cast here allowing those new characters to add laughter and silliness to her stories.

Great fun to read this one!

I read this book in less than two days. It's a romance-cozy mystery. It's a little long for the genre, and it feels that way at times. Some of it is because there are spare story lines that don't need to exist or are never resolved (although this doesn't feel like a series). Some of it is also because the editor could have done with a little more, ahem, editing.

That said, the main characters are likeable, and the story line is different and not predictable. I do wish that her love of Stephanie Plum had been explored more; instead it felt more like a repeated throwaway line, but I don't think that was the intent. Would I recommend reading it? No. Do I regret reading it? No.

p.s. I agree that the "for the love of..." line was used waaaaay too much.

I enjoyed Lily Barlow, The Mystery of Jane Dough. It is light, laugh out loud funny at times and engaging; yet I did not love it. I think it had the potential to be great and Carla Vergot is definitely a fine writer. In my opinion, however the book focused entirely too much on the relationship between Lily and Jack and far too little on Lily's interest in finding Storie Sanders and the Doe Network. The Doe Network is a clearing house for all of the dead cases the police haven't been able to identify, dating back to the 1900s. Imagine the possibilities for future stories. Although I was a bit disappointed, I will read the second book in the series, hoping an unsolved death is the primary focus. 3.5 Stars.

A steamy-sexy story mixed with mystery. I loved the tug and pull of Jack and Lily (and that she named her Jeep). It had a nice cozy feeling like I got when I read Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews in its familiarity that I felt as a reader – quickly finding myself immersed in the story. And if you have a fear of chickens, then Lily can be your new partner in crime. The story was well written with great details that allowed me to “see” what was happening.

I enjoyed getting to know Lily and Jack. Though I did think Jack was too pushy and Lily did let him decide everything. She tended to talk big and be annoyed but didn't follow through with keeping her boundaries. The side characters were fun and I could imagine the high school friends being back together during the summer.

This should be labeled romance with a strong mystery story line.

I gave it a 5 star review mainly because I adore the characters- Lily, Jack and Miss Delphine. Lily and Jack’s kind of unconventional love story is so fun and the way Carla Vergot’s writes with all her crazy idioms is hilarious. I smiled and snickered all the way through. I am waiting for the next book impatiently.

What a delightful cozy mystery! Lily Barlow is a breath of fresh air when it comes to new characters. The rapport between her and her BFF, and the relationship they have, is wildly entertaining. The struggles Lily has with paying for school are all to real. Her morbid fascination with cold cases was just grossly amusing. The way that Vergot wove the story together was wonderful. A quick read that all are sure to enjoy.

Lily Barlow returns home from college, after her dad has a heart attack, to get the family's bakery running. With only needing to hire a bakery manager, she rents an apartment from Miss Delphine. In the meantime between interviews, she accidentally comes across Doe Networks. Where she becomes obsessed with solving a murder that may have involved an old flame! All this becomes complicated when her best friend Jack reveals that he wants to take things to a new level. He wants a relationship!
When Carla reached out to me about her book, the first thing that drew me in was the cover! A skull cover, made of bakery foods! Instantly loved it! The story line was definitely the sold factor for me! I love the mystery/love plot! I definitely felt connected to Lily. She is very devoted to her family, loyal, not a risk taker, but she sets out to find the truth no matter what the damage is. She reminds me a little of me. Jack's character pulled the strings on my heart. He is Lily's best friend, sincere, also loyal, protective of Lily, patient, and madly in love with her. He reminds me of my boyfriend Austin!
There really isn't a thing in this book, that you couldn't like. You definitely get some good laughs (Mr. McNugget). You get mystery. And you get to watch two best friends try and move from best friends to dating. Jack's patience with Lily really makes this book! If you haven't read this book, I would definitely recommend it!

Carla Vergot delivers a fun, often hysterical crime-solving romp between two best friends that could be lovers, if only Lily opens her eyes and heart; and crazy chickens that could have their very own novel in “Lily Barlow: The Mystery of Jane Dough”.

Lily Barlow is one cool chic! She is a Laugh Riot!

She is so unique, eccentric and hilarious with her quirky one-liners that had me laughing out loud! I found myself always waiting for the next one!

I fell for her hard; especially loving the fact that she became obsessed with the Doe Network she happened upon…when she was supposed to be googling “Dough”! (See! She is hysterical!)

This led us to the mystery part of the story. I was so intrigued and rather excited about this. But, then this part of the narrative fell a little short for me. Only because I was expecting a lot more excitement. This by no means is suggesting I did not like this storyline. I am saying that when you wrap Carla Vergot’s story up, this was the one small piece I wish had a bigger explosion….like Lily’s character!

Her best friend, Jack was helping her investigate the mystery….and the slow burn romance with him was killing me!! The entire book I was like..”Lily! He’s perfect!”

Only Lily seems to need Love Goggles! Ha! Drove me bit mad.

I cannot wait to see what is in store for Lily and Jack in the next book.

(I can totally see Lily Barlow getting a Cult Following)

Lily Barlow has a few problems in her hometown that must be solved quickly before she's due back to her college classes. She has to find a manager for her dad's bakery after he takes ill. She has to figure out how to deal with a killer chicken that meets her at the bottom of the steps when she comes out every day. There's a good possibility that a friend of hers has been murdered, and the "Stephanie Plum" in her wants to get to the bottom of that. And worst of all, her best friend, Jack, who has known her since her childhood practically, and who she is absolutely sure lives in a haunted house, has decided he wants to take their friendship to the next level. You will spare a laugh, or at least a chuckle, on almost every page of this cleverly written novel as this talented author takes us on a raucous journey through mystery, love, and uncertainty. Lily Barlow is a great character with many adventures in front of her. And to prove this point, there is a sequel to this charmer that is due out at the end of March 2020. So you definitely want to read this one, and then patiently wait over here with me for the second one to be released. I promise you won't be sorry. I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review that honestly isn't even one bit hard to accomplish.

While the writing is very good, to me, this is not a cozy mystery. The mystery takes a back seat to the relationship between Lily and Jack. In the end, I didn't even read the last four pages on my Kindle because it was about Lily and Jack having sex. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a prude. However, I don't read cozy mysteries for the sex and cursing. I read them because they don't have that. If I want a hot romance novel, I will read one. I did like the characters, especially Miss Delphine, but I grew to dislike Jack very much. He tells Lily they can take it "turtle" slow, but he is constantly invading her space and using every opportunity he can to manipulate Lily's feelings. He is overbearing to the point of machismo. I am really disappointed as I have read so many good things about this book. Bottom line is: It belongs in the HOT ROMANCE section and not in the COZY MYSTERY section of the book store. Having said all of this, I'm sure there are people who will enjoy this book. It's just not for me.

Lily, a college student, unexpectedly has to leave college life to help out with the family bakery. Being an independent young person, she decides that she doesn’t want to live at home. She finds an apartment over a garage owned by the tenacious Miss Delphine and her mighty animal menagerie. Lily’s active imagination ignites fast and furious—especially after a peanut butter and seedless jelly (not jam) sandwich in Miss Delphine’s kitchen. Thank goodness for ubiquitous Jack. He’s just what Lily needs to help her stay “somewhat” grounded and not too bored. This book is great fun to read. I found myself laughing out loud at Lily’s reactions to events. The dialogue is both clever and witty. The plot is fast and action packed. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every character and the dynamics between them as they grew and evolved. I can hardly wait to see what life has in store for Lily in Carla Vergot’s highly anticipated Lily Barlow 2-The Mystery of the Mangroves.

Couldn't put it down

From the very first page to the end the story kept me interested. I couldn't put the book down. There were lots of funny parts, a little romance, a little bit of on the edge thrill and some sad parts. I felt every emotion that Lily was feeling. There was a nice twist near the end and I hope that one part will be another story I look forward to Carla's next book.

Vergot's characters are funny, quick witted, and completely loveable!

Totally not what I expected . . . in a good way!  I have never laughed so hard and so much while reading a mystery!   Vergot's characters are funny, quick witted, and completely loveable.   I was drawn in from the first paragraph and stayed fully invested till the last.

Lily Barlow is a pile of contradictions, second guessing, and mixed emotions.  But that's part of her charm.  She's come home to help her dad and uncle settle things with their bakery, determined to return to college for the fall semester.  Home, her childhood friend, and a penchant for unsolved murders, all conspire to change that!

You'll LOVE this new series, and then, like me, you'll be chomping at the bit for the next entry.

Trust me on this, you need to get into this series!

Lily Barlow, The Mystery of Jane Dough is an alluring story written with charm and wit. The author grabs your interest from the start with the introduction of the main character, Lily Barlow, who has reluctantly returned to her small hometown to deal with her family’s struggling bakery. What she believes will be an easy trip so she can quickly return to her life at school spirals into an emotional quagmire. Not only does her lifelong best friend, Jack Turner, drop a bombshell on her but she is quickly becoming obsessed with an unidentified murder victim. The unique cast of characters, Lily’s clever quips and overactive imagination keeps the storyline moving. A great choice for both occasional and avid readers.

I read Lily Barlow, the Mystery of Jane Dough in one sitting, not being able to put it down. It is a very entertaining combination of mystery and romance. All of the characters were well developed and likeable. The mystery and the romance are both interesting and kept me interested til the last page. Being from the south I loved the use of Southern dialect threw in there too. This was a great start to what is sure to be a great serìes. I laughed so much reading this book , and got alot of strange looks in the process. Carla Vergot you sure knocked it out of the ballpark with your debut novel. If you are having a bad day this is one story sure to put a smile on your face.

A little bit of mystery, a little bit of romance. I was looking forward to reading Carla Vergot for the first time, and I did enjoy her writing style and the overall storyline. Lily is a likeable character to follow, and her family situation with the bakery and also her love life complications were enjoyable to read about. I was intrigued by the mystery aspect of this book, with the Jane Doe network and all that, and I actually wish that had been expanded on even more. The plot point with Miss Delphine didn’t really seem necessary to the overall story, and sometimes the relationship bits dragged on, which made the book seem long to get through for me. But overall I found it to be a cute and interesting story and I did want to see how the ending would play out.

Lily is obsessed with Stephanie Plum, from her beloved Janet Evanovich novels; when she drunkenly discovers the Doe Network, an online listing of unidentified murder victims, one victim may be a part of Lily's past. As Lily uses her Stephanie Plum detective skills to track down an old friend, another old friend, Jack, wants to be more than Lily's friend!

Lily Barlow: The Mystery of Jane Dough is a quick, fun read with a little mystery, a little comedy and a sweet love story! I would love to read more about Lily (and Jack)!

I received an advanced copy from the author; all opinions are my own.

I thoroughly loved this read. Carla did a great job of making me cheer for Lily for all of her small victories and at the same time booing for all of the great opportunities lost to her fear. In the short time that we get with Lily, we get to watch her grow, just a little, but not in an insignificant way.

A fun little nugget of romance masked as a mystery, the tension between Lily and Jack had me in knots the entire time, right until the last paragraph. Not to mention the mystery was nicely morbid and slightly sad. But in a good way.

Nice work Carla!

I loved the beginning to what I hope will be a long running series!
Lily Barlow is a college student who has been called back home to reopen her Dads bakery after a heart attack leaves him recuperating
She’s young and quirky with a passion for the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich By chance while googling Dough she comes upon the Doe network and dives in to learning about trying to match found bodies to missing people one of which is all too familiar add to that her life long best friend has decided he wants to move the relationship to a different level

I truly did enjoy this book and I’m so looking forward to book 2 this spring

Carla Vergot’s writing is effortless and fun. Her character, Lily is a down to earth girl that readers will enjoy and believe in.

I loved her expressions for each predicament she found herself caught up in. I also enjoyed her overactive imagination and the self-discovery she experienced.

I hope there’s a sequel planned.

Lily Barlow is a college student, amateur sleuth, strong, confident young lady. She has a great imagination, detests bugs (and chickens), is quirky, and a bit of a klutz. Put all this together with a budding romance, temporary housing, and murdered victim and you have a laugh out loud story. Great story.

I was hooked from the first page to the very last! Carla Vergot's debut novel weaves the perfect amount of romance, humor, and mystery together with likeable, well developed characters and a gripping plot. It ends with a bang and leaves room for what I hope will be many more books in this series.

Carla Vergot added mystery and romance in one book, and she did it so well. I was hooked from th beginning. The only thing that disappointed me about this book is that the Misty/Story profile was never identified at the end of the book. I think this is a romance with a mysterious twist.
