London, Kentucky 1872 Left with no choice but to flee her home, Abigail Muncy arrives on the stagecoach, weary and not hoping to find anything more than a quiet place to rest her head for a few nights before moving on. Instead, she's charmed by the town and its residents. Despite her wariness, she decides to stay in London and try to rebuild what she's lost. Phillip Wells is a man ready to settle down, finally able to consider marrying again following the loss of his beloved wife. As soon as he meets his charming new neighbor, his heart sits up and takes notice. But it soon becomes apparent that Abby is carrying a weight on her heart, one that might be too heavy to allow for that second chance Phillip is longing to have. He can only hope that he's strong enough to help Abby fight her ghosts so that they can go forward with living together. Pinecone Trail is the fifteenth book in the "Firefly Hollow" series by T.L. Haddix, Women's Fiction Romances touched with traditional Appalachian folklore.
T.L. Haddix is the author of the Firefly Hollow Series, women's fiction romances set in Eastern Kentucky, as well as numerous other projects under various pen names. She's a self-described eccentric, a somewhat reclusive stick in the mud who lives in Eastern Kentucky with her husband and their cat-children. Her hobbies include gardening, cooking, reading, genealogy, casual bird-and-critter watching, and being short.
She writes books about characters who are flawed but who somehow still manage to overcome the challenges thrown in their paths and reach for happiness with their soul mates. And while she can't tell a joke in the real world to save her life, she tries to inject her characters' lives with quirky, unintentional humor that surprises readers at just the right moment.
The Good: • The romance between Abby & Phillip • Seeing where the shifting came from
The Bad: • Feels out of time • Didn't really care for these characters
The Book: If this wasn't connected to the Firefly Hollow series I feel like I might've enjoyed it as a romance a little more. I liked the romance & the relationship with Abby & Phillip, it might've felt a little more modern than it should've. I always like seeing the main characters before they start dating then as they start to fall for each other, it really makes the journey worth it for me. Reading this book that's exactly what it was & it made me super happy. I also liked knowing that this is where Owen's shifting powers had come from. I just liked knowing that little tidbit...did it need a book to accomplish it? No, but still enjoyable. Though, as I mentioned earlier it felt out of time, it was supposed to take place in 1872 but a lot of their thinking & their morals were a lot more modern. I know they mentioned in the book a few times that the Welles were very forward thinkers in the way they viewed women. But if it was such a hullabaloo that two people were locked together in their underwear, how do they suddenly go to having sex before marriage? Like in Firefly Hollow they even brought it up that they felt it was wrong to do that & Eliza has brought it up multiple times too so it just seemed so out of place in time that I just stepped back & thought of it as a more modern time period. Also, I just didn't care for these characters. I feel like it came up once or twice in the whole series when Owen was doing genealogy things but besides the last name I couldn't have told you why this was included in the series. I would've preferred a book on Eliza & Ira or even Eliza & Eli rather than this one if there was a choice. Overall, it wasn't a bad book but I did have to think in a different mindset to enjoy parts of it.
Wonderful addition to the Firefly Hollow series. Learning about Owen's ancestors was really interesting and I was touched by the suffering Abby went through. I am so happy she found Phillip and he helped her to heal. It was nice catching up with some of the characters from previous stories. I would recommend this book to any adult reader who enjoys stories with a lot of emotions and a very satisfying ending. I am certainly looking forward to the next book in this series. There were several editing errors and they were somewhat distracting but I was able to get back into the thread of the story.
Writer's story was mostly to take place in 1872, but by her story writing, a reader would have to remind themselves that it was 19th century & not 21st. She had the 1872 characters in rural Kentucky discuss genetics, neighborhoods, taking showers and linen closets. Other oversights included a doctor joining a medical team, instead of a regiment, for the Civil War. Absurd conversations of a character explaining to a legal reclerk the law regarding divorce, a woman discussing to a widower of how a woman's monthly courses dictate fertility. It was hard to get through the book, as I stopped a lot just to re-read indiscrepensies.
I would recommend reading this before her other books. It lays down a solid foundation for where and how the lineage began, and the insecurities and alienation of living with a secret, especially a dark frightening one. I have bought and read several of Haddix's books. Some of them lean into the YA category, but adults like me still like the stories, maybe because we all yearn to be something more, something unique.
I absolutely love the ongoing saga of the Campbell family and the extended relatives. This book takes us back and delves into the wells family connection. Excellent read but I thought it would be more reading diary entries than reading a narrative of the journals. T.L. Had six did a fantastic job as usual and I look forward to any new books she writes. Thank you
First I’d like to say I LOVE the stories of the Campbell family. But I’m sorry to say (please don’t hate me) this one wasn’t my favorite. I thought it was interesting to finally find out about Abby but the end of the story left me hanging there. Maybe it’s because I wanted more and I know I’ll have to wait for the next adventure.
So far this is my favorite book.... I love reading about the past. Being from Hazard, KY myself I love to read about that area... Let us all hear more stories..... Thank you, Treva Haddix
I waited until I read the whole series before I left a review. Loved them all, this Campbell family is wonderful. I would love to be part of their clan.
This woman is a fantastic author. Every book she has written has kept my attention from start to finish. I can't wait until the next one. I recommend this series to anyone.
