The perfect read for fans of A.A. Albright and Ani Gonzalez.
What others are saying
I really enjoyed this book, and I am looking forward to the next one. I loved the characters and the magic twists.
I like Frankie. She’s independent, feisty and has signed one hell of a lease. When her familiar, Dex, a spunky Fox Terrier, discovers a suspiciously cheap boat for rent in the marina, Frankie thinks it’s too good to be true... And it is. Sneaky witch, Gwen, pulls a fast one and locks Frankie into a magical lease with dire consequences if she does not fulfill the conditions. Supremely pissed, Frankie does not take this lying down, and I was cheering for her, Dex, and the mysterious Zane as they try to thwart Gwen, and not get Frankie dead. Fun, fast paced, with some interesting characters, this story had me until the end. Definitely reading the next book.
Really enjoyed this story, now binge reading the other books in the series.
In this series: #1 - The Ghost Ship #2 - The Blood Hex #3 - All Hallows Keep #4 - Faerie Lights #5 - Vampires and Valentines #6 - A Spell in Paradise
Coming 2019: #7 - The Curse of the Blue Moon #8 - Part-Time Mermaid #9 - House of Hoodoo
Andrene, or Andie as her cozy mystery readers know her, has a love of writing instilled in her by her mum. Irreverent, cutting and reflecting her background as a stand-up comic, her women's fiction in particular is edgy with humour that can be dark in places. Don't be fooled into thinking her horror novel, DietVale, under the pen name Sydney Hunter is dark, dark, dark.
. This is a cozy paranormal mystery tale, which was not as compelling as I was hoping that it would be. I realize it may be the introduction to a series, but even so, I felt there were too many loose ends in the explanation department, leaving the reader confused.
There is only one constant in the Heroine's life, that of her Jack Russell dog named Dex, who has the telepathic ability to communicate silently with the heroine and loves blueberry muffins. The rest of the characters are all strangers, and their motives are unclear. She, alone, must decide who she can trust and what is happening around her.
This was a clean tale, even though the heroine does drool over her instructor. It may or may not be a stand-alone tale, since the conclusion does not tie up in a pretty bow disguised as an H.E.A. I'm really not sure if I'm going to continue this series, since nothing really captivated my interest enough to do so. I kind of liked it, but I didn't love it. However, there are some readers that thoroughly enjoyed this.
Andrene Low's career in stand-up comedy certainly comes through in this book. I'd describe Frankie B - The Ghost Ship, as clean and cozy, with a liberal helping of magical sass. There were magical elements which drew parallels with the Discovery of Witches series, and I like that Andrene has kept to the recognised rules of fictional magic - which made it easy to follow. With a small cast of curious characters, you were left guessing as to who was the 'baddie', if indeed there was a baddie, or who was just in in for themselves. I have to admit that at one point I expected the whole plot was going to be tipped upside-down (although that would have been a great plot line if that had happened too)! Is it wrong that I finished the book hunting down the anise I had in my pantry to remind myself of what it smelt like?! If you like paranormal ghost stories which won't make you leave the light on at night, then this is the one for you. Entertaining, amusing, and easy to read.
Frankie B and her dog Dex are almost inseparable. They can even communicate through thought. This isn’t normal, even though Frankie B is a practising witch. Well she should be – practising her spells that is.
Where she lives doesn’t allow dogs, and Frankie has been careful to make sure all evidence of Dex is hiding when her landlady comes on her inspections. But someone is conspiring against Frankie and her secret is quickly discovered.
This is the first of many changes in her life, which also brings a hot guy who is something else entirely, plus new friends, and enemies, and also a pirate ghost keen to kill her. There are power plays and secret agendas afoot, and Frankie B has to be on her toes and up to scratch with her witchcraft to protect herself and Dex.
This is the first in this series. It packs a punch and pulls the laughs. Andrene Low’s experience as a stand-up comedian effortlessly shines through this teen/adult cross-over novel for those who are seeking humour, mystery, fun and an undercurrent of romantic tension. Nice to see something funny amongst the ocean of angst.
A good read but slightly confusing at the end. She has been hiding her witchyness and constantly on the move since the death of her mother. Now she looking for another place to stay when her familiar spots a advert that seems too good to be true. Why does the lease have her whole name on it? Why is the owner bent on forcing her to do what she wants? What is the ghost after? Why does her necklace zap people? With hexes and curses flying plus a dead, risen again grandmother and a power struggle there is certainly enough to keep your interest. Just a shame that the last bit was a bit confusing. With great characters, love the heroine's go get them attitude and her familiar's independent streak, this would have been outstanding with a bit more clarity.

What I look forward to with each new Andrene Low novel is her comedic voice. With sharp, dry wit, she observes the world from a slightly skewed perspective. She also creates strong female characters who have mastered the art of hiding their vulnerabilities behind seemingly impenetrable armor. Like Brenda in Low’s Sexy Seventies Series, Frankie B moves independently (well, almost independently) through a world unfamiliar to the modern reader. As if by magic, it is through the outsider’s perspective that a reader can enter the realm of the coven in “The Ghost Ship.”
We’re introduced to Frankie B when she is feeling most vulnerable, having lost her mother, the one person with whom she shared a close relationship. She is not alone, however. Meet Dex, the unofficial star of the book. A Jack Russell with telepathic abilities (thanks, Mom!), he connects Frankie to the world through his adventurous and outgoing personality, not to mention his unending quest for muffins.
This is a story of personal growth. A cast of characters whose motives are unclear to Frankie B will help her to develop both the physical and magical strength she’ll need to conquer this novel’s foes. Could a potential love interest help her to shed her protective armor? I’ll have to wait to read the next book (books?) in the series for the answer.
I don’t usually read paranormal mysteries, but I am glad I took a chance on this one! It was such a fun, entertaining read. At times I found myself chuckling out loud. Frankie has a great voice, and I absolutely adored Dex. The mystery kept me guessing till the end.
Very fast-paced. I liked the characters and Dex, the dog familiar. Would’ve liked a bit more ghostly business in there, but still enjoyed this. The double mystery was quite nice too! Definitely going to read the next one.

Heather's Notes So this book is basically a set up for the series (I guess) and she wasn't jinxed just bound. I liked the characters, but the rest of the story had lots of holes. I doubt I will continue this series
This is my first book by Andrene Low, but it won't be my last! As a stand-alone book this was a nice touch to your witch coming into her powers story. Turn of events bring Frankie and her dog/familiar Dex into this small marina town. One thing leads to another and Frankie realizes that she is actually in the midst of a coven of witches. Not usually a bad thing for a witch in training. However, it seems that one witch had more than just training in mind for Frankie. But Frankie shows the coven, and that one witch in particular, she can kick butt and take names in her own fashion. As in most paranormal mysteries there is a hunky guy that could end up being a love interest to Frankie down the line. Since this story is set in a town with a marina and about a ghost ship it kind of makes sense that one of the characters would be a merman. The way the story ends gives a clear direction of where a future story will take Frankie & Dex.
Went through this one quickly. Was a cute story as I loved Dex. Anything with a dog sidekick is a must read for me, and I like paranormal books dealing with magic.
Frankie is a witch, whose powers are wonky. When her mother dies in an accident, and Frankie loses her apartment, she and Dex stumble on a magical community living at the marina. With an available houseboat at a reasonable rate is offered, Frankie is a little worried about the terms of the lease. Unknowingly, she committed to helping the other residents rid themselves of a pesky poltergeist. What she comes to learn is not all is as it seems with the ghost, her magic, the residents, and her family. With the help of some new friends, she'll have to vanquish more than a ghost.
A few missing words but a quick cozy mystery that was enjoyable to read.
Frankie was a lazy witch that didn’t want to get evicted. Well, that plan worked out well when the landlady catches Frankie using her magic doing housework. Out they go—her and the dog she was not supposed to have.
Now homeless with a little cash, Frankie, along with her dog familiar, decides on her next step. Somehow she finds herself renting a houseboat. But it looked like she was rooked into it because her name was already on the lease. How did they know she would be there? It turns out that there was a vacancy in the Marina Coven, which was in need of a witch that could see ghosts on haunted ships.
This was an okay witchy story. I liked the telepathic dog and all the magic.
Frankie B - The Ghost Ship is a fun read. Frankie is a witch who lives in Seattle with her talking dog, Dex. I didn't even question the inclusion of a talking dog, I was so wrapped up in the story. Frankie does have powers that other witches don't; she can see ghosts and this leads her into trouble when she needs to find a new place to live. It's a good story. I enjoyed that Frankie got to meet her great-grandma x a lot and that she wore a protection spell from her parents. A light fun paranormal read.
Frankie and new aquiered coven are a blast truly the caracters surrounding this mystery are as vibrant as ever and full of intreage and humor as well as a few nasty secrets. A truly enjoyable read from start to finish with its witchy comidey and gohstly battles bringing a few internal issues to light. I'ts time for you to aquier a copy and start enjoying "Frankie B-The Ghost Ship "so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. 😋🤔🙄☺😏Kat
This is a fun book filled with witches, A pirate, and a handsome merman. Frankie and her familiar, Dex, get thrown out of their apartment but find a houseboat for lease at a pier which can only be seen by her coven. And, she doesn't want to join it. But, the landlord tricks her into it. And, Frankie is bound by the contract to train with the merman. Just in time since a ghost pirate and his ship want to harm Frankie.
I loved the setting of this mystery - Seattle is one of my favourite towns and living aboard has been on my bucket list for years. So all that and a ghost should have been an easy sell. Alas, there was a disconnect somewhere along the line and I wasn't as taken with the characters as I expected to be. Perhaps the next book in the series will draw me in further.
Cute light story, interesting characters and twists. Only complaint, too many loose threads left for the next book but since that is with all series author's, or at least it seems so anyway, I didn't take anything off. The reader could stop here but it's cute enough you want to read more
Frankie and her beloved familiar, Dex are forced to move out of their apartment and they find a new place to live. They found a boat for rent and that started a new life for them. They find themselves in a coven that's in trouble with a nasty poltergeist. Can Frankie solve the problem?
This is a second draft of a story at best not the finished product, there were spelling errors and repeated phrases that an editor could have easily fixed. I LOVE pirates and learning about Anne Bonny, so that really drew me in along with the magic but I do feel this was lacking a lot. I am interested to see where the series goes, I just hope it picks up.
It completes one story, mostly, but it leaves more questions unanswered than answered. I still want to read more in the series because the characters and concepts are interesting and unusual.
Join Frankie and her familiar Dex, after joining a coven against her will and being tricked into signing a blood contract, she's stuck in one place until she can defeat a troublesome ghost .
This book was one of my random selections. I found the story and characters to be enjoyable, interesting, and engaging. I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of stories written in the present tense, but it works for this book. This book is definitely worth reading.
I was enjoying this at the start but it all seemed to fall apart in the second half. Too many things would happen and then be made to "unhappen" and sometimes to happen again. A waste of reading time.
