Rate this book

So I will start this review with a warning: there are times when you may become highly anxious reading this and just choose to opt out from current society to go live "off the grid" somewhere out the back of Byron Bay and to just hip-out. But take heart, the book does provide a few glimpses of the benefits of globalisation (and it would appear that the book was completed pre release of COVID-19 vaccines which absolutely would not have materialised if there was not global biomedical collaboration) but albeit a few.

Written by Israeli journalist Nadav Eyal each chapter investigates one impact of globalisation neatly merging a journalist's keen eye on social reality with an economic, political and historical conversation. The author does this apolitically (mostly), so you do not have to hide the cover of the book from any conservative members of your workplace or family, but at the same time it would be a good book to casually drop on the table of your local socialist political meeting (if you're that way inclined) as it would keep them armed with anti-capitalist arguments for months, if not years.......

Anyway, for me the book was a riveting read, and really made me contemplate how I saw myself - am I a global citizen? What is a global citizen? It provided great insight into the realities of globalisation from many different perspectives - things that you may have been presented fleetingly in news reports or read a bit about in economics pages or magazines, but had never had the time or information presented in factual form. The book also examines the increase in nationalism and fundamentalism and their driving forces, particularly in the US (but I think this can be transported to many parts of the globe).

Easily readable, you may become overwhelmed and feel anxious or depressed that as one small citizen your voice really doesn't matter in this big mess that we are all in - just because of globalisation: I mean - no wonder no one cares about the truth anymore, the environment is broken beyond repair, AI is going to mean no one has a job in 20 years etc, etc. But have some hope - the last chapter provides some light however, and I guess this is where the author did not want to get into too much more detail as the book is meant to make connections through providing a story and then give some facts for you to make your own decision on the pros and cons of the impact from globalisation, and to make you really think about where your values lie on the matter. It is therefore not meant to present solutions but rather provoke discussion and thought, but it can't help make one realise the importance of confidence in our political systems (whatever they may be) and that progress now must also mean innovation, flexibility, co-operation, good leadership etc.

I loved the concept that as a global society we are moving into a new era out of the age of responsibility (which commenced post world war eras), and it is now crucial to our harmonious survival to reconsider what we have learned from the past such as: "the values stemming from and informed by the Enlightenment: rational inquiry, human dignity, individual freedom, acceptance of science and technology as a means to improve the human condition, and liberalism" (p415).

There were a few things I did feel the book neglected such as the role of globalised media and the impact that makes on unbiased media in the Western world. More could also have been made of the election-cycle trap that most Western democracies find themselves in which makes so much of governing body policies short-term and near-sighted.

I recommend it highly - and it would make an awesome book club read (not!!!).

Very enlightening and informative, but at this point I am not 100% sure what the lesson is. The author kept discussing different aspects of globalization and its counter-movements, but after reading the book I am not entirely sure what I learned.
The author gives a lot of interesting anecdotes and reports them as he does in his role as news reporter. So it feels like something between a book and a very long magazine article.
I liked it, it was easy and fun to read, but I guess I still have a lot to process.

The rise of nationalism and vociferous, at times violent backlash against globalization has been a topic of great concern to many, myself included, in the recent past. Eyal sheds light on a variety of different aspects of globalization, its successes and failures, how and why it provokes strong opposition in many quarters, and how this opposition is expressed.

Very though-provoking, very well written (and excellently translated from the original Hebrew), although just maybe a bit too wide-ranging to really get its core point across.

Eyal is very much a globalist, dismayed by the attacks that have come from various sources against globalisation. He refers to the post-war period, a time of expansion of trade and global institutions as the age of responsibility, a time when the world still remembered the horrors of global war and was determined to make a revised system, based on liberal values, work. However, since 911 and then the financial crisis, attacks have come from both religious fundamentalists on one side and 'anarchist-radicals' on the other.

The book covers a lot of ground, both literally and figuratively. The author visits communities in America, Europe, the middle East and Asia, and covers a wide range of attitudes and viewpoints. The author explores in some detail the origins of dis-satisfaction with the 'Washington consensus'. The forces of globalisation, both government and business, brought the criticism and revolt on to themselves in large part, and some of the reasons are just an inevitable byproduct of people fearing a loss of their local identities to a global other, over which they have no control. While every chapter is interesting and informative in its own way, the sheer range can be overwhelming and maybe the author could have done a somewhat better job of linking the powerful vignettes into the main theoretical thrust of his thesis.

The book concludes that although nationalism has re-emerged as a potent political force, globalisation as a process has not ended, based as it is on connections between people which technological forces continue to foster, and on globally shared issues, such as climate change, which must be tackled together.

An important book on globalisation, one of the better ones in recent years and really one which deserved more attention than it it received.

XXI wiek.

This book is probably best regarded as a memoir of the author's career as a journalist to date, which I mostly read to get some sense of how an informed foreigner regards the United States; though Eyal is concerned about much more than that. While much of this work deals with "globalism" as unfettered international business practice, where profits are made and the side affects of those practices are "externalized" (i.e. dumped on population being exploited), Eyal has bigger issues he wants to deal with. In the main, Eyal sees the current dysfunction as a result of the era of responsible leadership that followed World War II having passed away, and the successors not appreciating that the system is not a machine that will run on its own without attentive maintenance. Yes, the Cold War was afflicted with a string of lethal proxy wars, but, without getting too nostalgic, matters were kept in bound. What's clear now is that no bounds are really being recognized, and most of the world leadership is playing with fire. Though this book is not that concerned with COVID (the original edition having a publication date of 2018), that might wind up being the real wake-up call about the limits of identity politics and of unfettered nationalism.

Going forward, what Eyal hopes for is a new commitment to a politics appreciating that collective problems do not take care of themselves, and a stronger sense of common decency in terms of handling communities that have been crushed in the gears of the increasing unsustainable world economic system; he realizes he's asking a lot.

This is a very insightful book covering a wide range of subjects dealing with the age that we live in post Trump. The chapters weave separate pictures of various news stories and subjects endemic to the rise against the liberal order of the end of the 20th century and the leaks in that order that have lead to the time we live in today. The notion that the book was written by an Israeli journalist also makes the viewpoint more salient in the discovery of why Le Pin in France gained so much support or why coal miners in West Virginia voted for Trump when prima facia it seems it would be against their interest. The very idea of global commerce is now under attack on many fronts and finding a solution is not as possible as is political backlash that politicians have used to great avail globally in the name of nationalism.

I nearly gave 5 stars for this book. I loved his thought provoking idea about globalization, the rise of fundamentalist and nationalist aside of globalization.

Some quotes written there were so "cruel":
- It has created a climate in which human beings must cope with the world, materially and conceptually, as a single and integrated place.
- Globalization does not ask—it commands, and its command is efficiency
- It fought for its freedom, but the bonds of servitude were replaced by financial chains.
and many many more..

Had it stop at chapter 16, it surely ended 5 stars. The last couple of chapters were boring when he spent just a little too much time in America.

I cannot rate this book highly enough -- maybe 10 stars. It is both easy to read and a slog at 450 pages. But he covers lots of territory and brings it together to explain the failures of the globalization models as well as its success. Ultimately, he is convinced that drastic change is needed before humans become one of the many species facing extinction.
He does provide solutions as well as identifying the challenges they face

The World is made up of more than 7.8 billion people who live in 195 different countries - which happen to have communities with their unique complex identities, cultures and civilizations. Since the industrial revolution and particularly with the advancement of technology, the globe has become interconnected more than ever. However, pleasing everyone is just impossible and hence there will always those in favour or in opposition of globalisation. More interesting though is that a growing number of people do not care about such a concept or politics in general. This can be seen from the voting turnout and voting behaviour in many countries. As the author points out at a later stage of the book people have also lost trust and gaining back trust is a very difficult task.

To keep it short, globalisation has both pros and cons. For this reason, leaders and technocrats shall ensure that communities are not pushed to accept the narrative of globalisation. Rather they shall aim for a moderate approach.

When it comes to the author, I could not really identify accurately his stand. Although most of the time he criticised those who in his own words oppose globalisation (and here I must point out that at times he went too far on the personal rather the constructive criticism), globalisation was at times also described as "deeply unsustainable". On another note, we are living in turbulent times and it seems that materialism is taking over. Intellectuals shall work hand in hand to provide a better life by educating the public in general. But above all, in their writings, they shall be exemplary individuals - and if you do not agree with an opponent of your ideology and way of thinking, always be respectful.

People are turning their back to traditional politicians and political parties because the latter have become too alienated from reality. They are no longer the pulse of The People (if 'they' ever were).

On about 70% of the first page, I loved what the writer gave me to know about what's happening around the world. For example, why there are so many anarchist groups in Greece, the Iran conflict, refugees from Syria, nature being disturbed by humans and the resulting elephant problem for local people in Sri Lanka, the aging society and loneliness in Japan, Brexit in the UK, neo-Nazis in Germany, and so on. This made me aware of what really happened and why people have done such selfish things in a way.

I knew that Trump is really an awful person and definitely makes a bad US president, but the last 30% of the book talking about him made the book less interesting. (Especially since we already knew that he is an idiot, especially among liberal people.)

I agree with previous reviewers that the book would be more perfect if the writer had shown his purpose or objective of what he wants people to revolutionize in the world.

Anyway, I would give this book 5 stars because I love how empathetic and liberal it is.

I gave 5 stars to this book which reviews globalisation in a balanced way highlighting its benefits but also pointing out the problems it triggered such as inequality, global warming, fundamentalism, terrorism and racism. While the book doesn’t have the analytical detailed framework of academic writings, it is easy to read and backed by numerous anecdotes taken from the journalistic background of the author.

Neither a reportage nor an essay, sometimes borrows from a memoir. What seemed like an interesting story of globalization and the rise of its counter-movements, quickly becomes a mishmash of stories, very unequal and sometimes tendentious.
