Hate at First Sight

Rate this book
Eight years wasn’t long enough to forget what he did.
I didn’t forget the secrets, the lies, and the betrayals.
I didn’t forget that he single-handedly ruined my life.
But now he’s back, and he’s still not done with me.
My nightmare. My dream. My dark, broken prince.

Aribelle

He was my own personal apocalypse,
But I moved on. I healed. I built a new life.
It took me eight years, but I did it.
Then he came back.
He came into my life just like the last time.
Other guys wanted my heart to make their own,
But Zach wasn’t like them. He wanted my heart for a trophy.
Like a prize to hang on his mantle.
And I’d be damned if he was going to get it.
It would’ve been easier if the years had been hard on him,
But nothing was easy with him.
Zach is a rock star now.
Household name. Sex symbol. Filthy rich.
It’s not long before I’m sucked back into his life,
And a six-month blackmail contract that says I have to tag along on his tour.
He thinks he can walk over me like the old days,
He thinks this is going to be easy.
But I’m going to enjoy proving him wrong.

Zach

I met Aribelle while she was trimming my hedges.
And no, that’s not a euphemism.
She was a gardener’s daughter,
and she should’ve been invisible to me.
She wasn’t.
She looked at me like she had a right to,
Like she was the one who should look at me with pity,
Like she somehow knew I was broken inside.
That wasn’t why I decided to ruin her life.
She dated one of my best friends and learned my darkest secret.
But eight years is a long time.
I never got what I wanted back then, and now’s my chance.
She’s back, and I’m not stopping until claim her heart.
She’s still not over what happened.
Tough luck, Gardener Girl.
I don’t lose, and the game is on.

USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon Charts Bestselling author Penelope Bloom is taking her first flight into romantasy—and yes, there are dragons. After years of contemporary romance, she's temporarily trading meet-cutes for magical academies and coffee shops for castles that reek of blood. She promises the banter is just as sharp, but now it comes with deadly consequences.

Fun fact: “Penelope Bloom” started as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the family dog, Penelope—never meant to be anything serious. But then the books took off, and the name stuck. Behind the scenes, Penelope Bloom is actually a husband-and-wife team. He handles the writing; she edits, helps with brainstorming, and runs the reader-facing side of things (like social media and messages). So if you’ve chatted with “Penelope” online, you’ve likely been talking to her—with the author chiming in whenever needed. Together, they’ve built the voice readers know and love.

This book is a Vicious Replica.

So here we have Zach (Vicious), who is a Rockstar. Then we have Aribelle (Emilia). And here she a ‘Gardener girl’ instead of ‘Help’.
The story is basically the same. Hero bullies the heroine. His tone, his behavior, his moods ...everything is just like our Vicious. Manipulating. Controlling. Aribelle is essentially ran out of town by Zach and doesn't see him again until their paths cross again eight years later.

The perfect way to describe this book is take Vicious (whole), and sprinkle some Midnight Blue. Yes, the author seems to be an L.J.Shen fan.

Beware though.
Not everyone liked Vicious. So remember this has the same safety levels as that book.

As for me. It was not that bad of a copy. I loved Zach and Aribelle’s interaction. Their chemistry was amazing. If you like hate-to-love stories with big jerks, then you don't want to miss this one!

Zach is the product of a wealthy family, and when circumstances occur while he is in his teens, he is left as a bitter and vengeful boy. Aribella is the gardeners daughter, and is as drawn to Zach as he is to her, yet when he thinks she overhears something she shouldn’t, her forces her to leave town. Now eight years later they again cross paths, and Zach who is now a successful and wealthy rockstar, blackmails Aribella to going to tour with him. No spoilers; this is a definite must read, you will not be disappointed. This is a well written flawless story, which jumps between the present and eight years previous, in order to give a better understanding of events which occurred. This story is raw, gritty, heartbreaking, emotional, which all lead to a powerful story, which had me captivated throughout. I highly recommend this authors’ for all readers.

Enemies to lovers trope...

And he's a tormented rockstar asshole and she's his nemesis-the 'poor' Gardener girl, and the only one who stood up to him...and their 'hate/want/lust/love spans during 8 years from their last year of high school till adulthood...

If you loved Vicious by L J Shen, you'll probably dig this story too...

There's well paced angsty anticipation with a bit distant feeling lingering through the plot and a bit simmered down approach in writing style...but the story is cliche-ed, and yet it works well enough for an entertaining light reading material

Oh my gosh. Talk about make your soul cry, pull your guts out thru your nose and want to curl into a ball and die. This story is so full of angst and sadness that like a train wreck you have to read to find out what happens. And you so want to. This is an amazing story that the author nailed. I was sad when it ended but so in awe of her amazing storytelling talent. Don't miss out on one of the years best books.

Yet another book that ends before the 40% mark, stuffed full of "bonus content". If this keeps up, I'm dropping KU. Too bad, it's the legit authors who suffer.

Let me start by saying I adore enemies to lovers romances and I love Penelope Bloom. I've been reading her romances from the start. I just couldn't give this book 5 stars because I hated Zach so much for most of the book, that I really though redemption was beyond his reach.

I know enemies-to-lovers romances are supposed to have the mean guy and the sweet girl. He's supposed to be a complete jerk, but realize his feelings for her and then slowly change his attitude towards life and become less of an a$$hole. Then they ride off into the sunset happily ever after.

Zachary however, the leading man in this romance was nearly beyond hope, which made it much harder to root for him and Aribella to end up together. I though Aribella deserved so much more than he was willing to offer, even once his cold heart started to thaw and we were made privy to the back story that changed him for the worse forever.

The story is told in present time with flashbacks from 8 years before when Zach destroyed Aribella's life in her senior year of high school. Zach shows very little maturing in the 8 years, but this isn't surprising considering he's now a spoiled rock star with the world groveling at his feet.

He just wouldn't let Aribella go. He always gets what he wants and she's the one that got away. Is there any chance at all that he can make himself worthy of her? Does he care for her at all beyond just making sure that she's a notch on his bedpost? Aribella's had her heart shattered by this man before, she won't recover from it a second time. Do they stand a chance at any sort of happiness together?

This book was an emotional ride. Lots of tears, stomach churning angst and moments where I just flat out wanted to throat punch Zachary. It was worth it in the end, but I sure had my doubts that there was going to be any kind or redemptive outcome for a damaged and sometimes evil man like Zachary.

Tormented💔, Tortured Love💘

This is a very interesting book. Two teens, one, Zack🐺🎸, the son of a wealthy man, the other, Aribella💋🌺, the daughter of estate gardeners, develop a hate love attraction that continues into adulthood.
Zack🐺🎸🍆🌋 is the privileged son, throwing parties where anything goes, even while still in high school.
His father is so callous and so weak, he divorces Zack's mother while she is undergoing treatment for cancer. Then he marries a gold digging nurse only a few years older than his son. His father allows the nurse to take over his life, and she pushes Zack🐺🎸 out, even gutting his trust fund.
Zack🐺🎸 is bitter and vengeful, but he's also resilient. He becomes a talented and tortured rock singer and guitarist🎸. He makes his own fame and fortune. But still he is deeply unhappy.

When they are still in high school, Zack🐺🎸 thinks Aribella💋🌺 has overheard his step mother blackmailing him. His shame is so great, he blackmails Aribella🌺💋, and forces her to leave everything behind. He basically ruins her life too.

The book jumps back and forth from present day to eight years previous, When the two were still in high school.
Aribella🌺💋 loves Zack🐺🎸🍆🌋, and she always believed he loves her, even though he treats her like an enemy.
Opposites attract like magnets and she becomes his muse, the reason why he writes his songs, and the reason why he hasn't self destructed like so many before him.

ARC Received for a Voluntary and Honest Review.
I also got the book with KU.

This is a very different adult romance because of the subject matter and the damage done to both characters when they were teenagers. A life of living for revenge takes its toll on Zack. Can he ever let it go?

This story is one that touches on so much in such a short time. Ariabella is such an amazing character. She has so much depth to her that you are just amazed by her strength and her ability to be so caring and loving. Zach is a guy who you just want to strangle until you find out more about him. The two of them together are explosive in good and bad ways. The story is just beautiful and so deeply developed. It will not disappoint and is definitely worth reading.

A well written story with nice storyline and plot. The characters are well described and develops nicely through the story.
It is a slow burn, second chance, romance that spans over 8 years. Zach and Aribelle is both broken but she is because of him. They have had secrets, blackmail and revenge in their friendship but now after so many years maybe also a HEA. Can she forgive him? Can they heal each other?

Not much steam but a nice romance.

This was a KU book that I picked up on June 16th - it's no longer available, which is a good thing as the book had a total of three stories by the Author crammed into it -
The first book was a total Vicious rip off - no other way to describe it except to say the a-hole went on to be a rock star - a little Midnight Blue thrown in for good measure perhaps? - Zero Stars
2 Stars to the 2nd story which was written in a totally different style and was better but the ending seemed rushed.

3.75 "reformed rude boy" stars

This was my first read by Penelope Bloom, and I'm intrigued.

I see that this story was published in 2018, and I'm curious to compare it to her most recent work. She has a style that (at this point at least) feels as if it's on its way to fruition, but is still feeling itself out a bit.

—And that's not a criticism. It's exciting to see potential, and different authors set a different pace for themselves. From the start to the end of the book I felt Bloom hit a kind of stride; the banter exuded more chemistry, the interactions gave away more. The characters just felt like they opened up to the reader in a more knowable and distinguishable way.

Plus, I surprisingly liked Aribella quite a bit. In a bully romance especially, that makes this book a unicorn of sorts. She was refreshingly self-aware. I like that she didn't get caught up in the angst of it all and was able to recognize Brent's infatuation with her for what it was even when he couldn't. Bloom easily could've gone the love triangle route here, so I appreciate that she made Aribella decisive.

Zach had a compelling backstory— huge fuckin' understatement—so he was surprisingly easy to route for despite his pretty hateful behaviour as a teen.

I think my greatest wish for this would've just been for it to be longer. The page count put Bloom under pretty rigid constraints, and though it's a fully formed story with a satisfying conclusion...I wanted more.

Some readers understandably don't want to invest in 600 pages of pure romance and character development. I get that. I'm from that "every mom had an A.D.D. pamphlet" generation and the shoe fit because I had and have a short attention span. But, surprisingly, one of the few things I can actually tune into for long periods is a good story. So I would've been keen on more time spent in Aribella and Zach's world.

I guess I'll just have to settle for reading some more from this author, though. Woe is me 😉.

Wow this is one emotional roller coaster of a story about Zach and Aribella. Let’s say Zach’s family comes from old money and he and his friends are the it crowd and they rule the high school social scene. Aribella is the daughter of gardeners who move around all the time and are not very good parents. One day Aribella is working with her father at Zach’s house and she sees Zach and all he is about and Zach does not like that. Zach speaks with her and refers to her as “Gardner Girl” not using her real name. Zach makes it his mission to get with her and then discard her like so many others. Zach, Taylor and Brent are in a band and while Aribella finds Zach attractive she knows to stay away from him. Brent on the other hand spends time with Aribella and Zach does not take to kindly to it so he finds a way to use his controlling mean ways to cause a scene and break them up for good. Zach is a very broken young man who hides his shameful hurt by being mean. Aribella thinks after some time that she just might be able to help him and as soon as she lets her walls down in front of Zach he destroys her with one sentence! Eight years later Aribella has built a good life for herself even though she had to give up tennis her one way to a scholarship and her family. Zach and the guys have become a very successful band and are having a concert in Aribellas town. Unfortunately Zach trips over a cable and gets hurt at this concert and he goes on a rampage to find the one responsible and ends up seeing Aribella is part of the crew. Zach being Zach he gets Aribella alone and does what he does best, blackmails her into spending 6 months as his muse and to get what he is finally wanted all those years ago! Aribella is one very strong woman protecting her and her heart from Zach but along the way Zach becomes softer around the edges and Aribella brings out some good in him. These two navigate the ups and down of their hurtful past while trying to become more in the present. Will Zach ever learn what it means to put another’s needs before his and really care for someone else? This is a heartbreaking story that hopefully love can heal the past! Hope to see a story for Taylor and Brent. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

“The girl who saw way too much”

I received an Advance Reader Copy for HATE AT FIRST SIGHT: A Romance Compilation written by Penelope Bloom and voluntarily reviewed this book. For old-money-rich boy Zach Thornwood, it was much safer to be cruel…it helps him to forget how broken he really feels inside…so he bullies and gets his way every time. Until he meets someone who doesn’t back down and doesn’t take his load of crap. In fact, SHE dares to dish it right back to him. But Zach refuses to lose in any way to this lowly Gardener Girl tending his gardens with her family. Somehow, he has already lost a part of himself to her at that very first meeting, whether he wants to admit it or not. She seems to see to the very heart of him through all the armor he wears to protect himself. It makes no difference, though, when they wind up facing each other again - he intends to finish the job any way he can and break HER down as much as she is able to see through him. But first, he has got to rope her back into his life again, and he discovers he will do anything to get a taste of her again before he does.

New girl Arabella didn’t have much growing up, and life was very simple for her. She was definitely no match for this entitled boy, who later became famous despite his hostile outlook on life. Arabella was quite definitely soft-hearted, but she also knew deep down that he must be act hurtful and pushing those around him for a reason. Until Zach turned his full wrath on her, and she was forced to cut loose from high school and leave town. But this time, eight years later, she was going to prove to herself that she could withstand this tornado and come out unscathed on the other side. Liked that she was able to stand up to Zach, until she felt she couldn’t, but she did not lose her sass and fire in her dealing with him. She cut through the crap herself and demanded that he keep it real with her, which took some backbone, actually. The story fills in one chapter at a time, and Zach opens up to her meanwhile, in a cathartic manner that soothes his soul much like being with her does.

I really love the author's work! I have read the two previous books she wrote (Baby for the Beast and Baby for the Brute) and I loved them!! This book may not have the mafia element but I'm a sucker for enemies to lovers romances!

Zack Thornwood is being an a**hole from page one! He's mean to everyone for everything and he loves revenge. From the time he sets his eyes at Aribella, the gardener's daughter, he instantly hates her. The reason for his hate is that he finds her sexy and she doesn't lowers her head like the others. His hatred intensifies when Aribella is dating his friend and band mate. After an incident Zack blackmails Aribella out of town. Fast-forward 8 years later, their lives cross again when Aribella works as a stagehand in one of Zach's concerts. His obsession with her is still there and he finds a way to blackmail her to keep her close.

It's frustrating how he does everything in his power to make her miserable, even though in a way he cares for her. Zach's so complicate; he wants to destroy her but doesn't want to either! I don't want to give too much away, but after a while I started understanding Zach's behavior better; I don't excuse it but I understand it!

The double POVs makes the story even better and let us readers understand the characters' actions and feelings. I loved the book, especially the two epilogues at the end. Even though I was frustrated many times with both the leads, I really enjoyed it. At times the book gave me some serious "Vicious by LJ Shen" vibes (I need to read it again :-p).

All in all, this is a book I totally recommend and I can't wait to see what comes next from the author!!

This book sucks your right in from the beginning. Zach is a cold, popular rich kid who is unbelievably cruel to Aribella during their junior year of high school. He is beautifully broken and hates that Aribella can perhaps see past the persona he presents to everyone. Aribella is the gardeners' daughter and is also broken. Something happens between them that forces Aribella to flee her family and school. Eight years later, Aribella is ends up on tour with Zach's famous band. Both are still battling demons and their attraction to each other. The book is told from both Zach's and Aribella's POV which I think made the story as I like seeing both of their thoughts and feelings behind their actions. I really wanted to dislike Zach until I started to read the chapters from his POV. The story jumps back and forth from 8 years earlier to present day. While in many books, the jumping from past to present can get confusing, Penelope does a good job of slowly revealing to reader what happened those 8 years ago. We learn why Zach is the way he is and why Aribella ran. The characters are well developed and I loved the more minor characters of Brent, Taylor, and Mandy. (I would actually love to read a book that focuses on Brent and Taylor). For those who like L.J. Shen's Sinner of the Saints series or Penelope Douglas' Bully, this book is somewhat along those lines. This is a standalone book with no cheating and a HEA.

BEST story EVER; So many innuendoes. Do they tell the story behind the story?
This story was even better than her last and I didn’t think that was possible. I literally plopped myself down in a chair and read until I finished. Let everything else go and I’ve NEVER done that before.
Aribella is the “Gardener Girl” to the rich and famous… her family is at least. They’ve just moved to Belvedere, CA (one of many homes) and she’s gotten the lay of the land from high school. She knows there are the rich and there are those who tend to the rich at this school. Zach is the “king” of his high school along with his crew/band. He has a bad attitude but Aribella sees something in him. Their first meeting is off-the-charts with chemistry but he and she hate one another. Don’t they? Is she right? What happened to her dreams? Why??? What made Zach such a d-bag?
I love Ms. Bloom’s use of flash backs to show how what happened eight years ago, impacts them today. There are hints throughout of what you discern in the end. Be aware of Ms. Bloom giving you glimpses of their future actions. This book is so well written (“he was a bottled thunderstorm with a loose lid”), and suspenseful with superior character development. We get to meet the Zach who started out at 16yo as a good kid, loving son to his mother and how and what caused his turn-around. Just writing this review gives me chills remembering what a good book!
I was offered an ARC to review but I ALWAYS buy Ms. Bloom’s books. Two more included…

Hate at First Sight is a contemporary, rockstar, enemies to lovers, and second chances romance, but it’s so full of so much more! Aribella wants to be over her past, but the events of eight years ago plague her memories and nightmares. When Zach walks back into her life, she knows it’s about to change again, but can’t tell if it’s for the worst or just for some closure. Veiled insults, banter back and forth, and enough sexual tension to light their tour bus on fire add tension to their relationship, but there’s also a side of Zach that she’s finding that she knew was always there. What happens when the truth comes out and real emotions run free?

Oh my goodness, I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book that has more angst, pain, and scars caused by each other than I have in this book. My heart was pounding with every page, trying to figure out what happened in their past and what would happen next! I can only imagine what Aribella was going through, because seriously, even I desperately wanted to hate Zach, but there was a tiny part of me wishing he’d just open up for more than a second and be real. And Aribella, I could decide if I wanted her to just cut her losses and run, or give her a huge trophy and hug for sticking by Zach’s side! The ending was simply wonderful and had me feeling so good and happy and truly believing in love! I so highly recommend you go read this book right now!

I loved this book! Aribella and her family move around year after year. Her parents are gardeners. Zach is the golden boy at school. He and Brent and Taylor have a band. Aribella meets Zach through the shrubs separating his house from the lawn area of the house next door. Zach instantly wants to f*** Aribella and is mad at her as he thinks she can see through him. She is enraptured by his good looks and sexy appeal. But she can't like him as he calls her "gardener girl" and he always rude to her. But he doesn't like that his friend and band mate Brent seems to like her and those two hang out together. So he goes about breaking them up. Zach is a mean and unhappy kid but as the book goes along, you slowly find out why. Initially I really didn't like Zach and was rooting for Brent but as the story progresses, you wonder if Zach can ever be redeemed. While working his concert as a roadie, Aribella and the whole team are brought into see Zach since he tripped over a cable. Upon seeing Aribella, he gets everyone to leave but her then proceeds to blackmail her into staying with the group so he can have sex with her. Very heartbreaking story yet you do get an HEA. But they all go through a lot of angst and heartbreak. I really hope both Brent and Taylor get their own book. These guys all have stories to tell.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book and definitely recommend it!

From start to finish I have to say I was drawn into the drama within its pages.

Aribelle with her kind heart and empathy is a character that I can relate to. To look into someones eyes and see more and want to help fix it is a rare gift. But along with her compassion and empathy comes a lot of pain. There are those who will abuse those with a big heart.

Enter Zach, the guy who comes from money with so much going for him. The rockstar with a hidden secret. Something deep and dark enough to make him determined to takes others to that dark place also.

Yet sometimes when two people so different meet there can be an attraction. Zach has done some really awful things yet Aribelle keeps getting drawn into his life for a reason. This is a rollercoaster of a ride with some pretty disturbing truths. My heart aches for what was but yearns for there be a better outcome. Is it hate or love? You will have to read the book to find out the outcome.
But be ready because this book brings some darkness to light and hopefully a light at the end of the tunnel. Written so well the story had my emotions all over the place. One minute hating Zach for the idiot he presents himself to be and then the next wanting to hold him for the secrets his had to live with. Penelope Bloom has out done her self with this one.

This is a intriguing, entertaining second chance romance and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
This book is about: a Rockstar (Zach) 8 yrs ago when he was a popular rich child, he was verbally cruel & threatening to the gardeners daughter (Aribella) and drove her out of town. Zach comes into contact with her again at a concert and decides that he never got what he wanted then but now he has the opportunity. Aribella is not impressed with this idea and the games begin between the two of them.
What you will find in this book is: drama, intrigue, twists & turns, some humor, memories, schemes, manipulations, cruelty, abuse, verbal conflict, revenge, obsession, rumors, injury, insults, stubborn, blackmail, tension, advice, mistakes, truth, sympathy, apologies, idiotic decision, unique gesture, verbal banter, happiness, lust, passion, love and a few steamy scenes.
The characters are well developed with individual personalities and react with varying realistic emotions according to the situations they find themselves in. The story-line and plot is well-thought out and written, it keep the readers attention.

Hate at First Sight is a searing, emotional story that actually managed to make me feel sorry for Zach, the ruthless and cruel mmc of this book. In flashbacks it's clear that he's a young man full of anger and pain that he doesn't know what to do with, so he takes it out on others. The person he targets is the new girl at school, the gardener's daughter Aribella, the girl who seems to see right through him. Torn between fury and attraction, his feelings drive him to give her a despicable ultimatum which pretty much ruins her life. Jump forward eight years and he hasn't changed much. When he sees Aribella again, he views it as a second chance to get what he wants from her and maybe finally be able to put her out of his mind. Once again, Aribella is forced to bow to his demands. She hates the side of him that finds satisfaction in hurting others but there are moments when she can see another, softer side, and that's the part of him she finds herself losing her heart to knowing full well that he might break her in the end.

This mostly character driven story really grabbed hold of me and I couldn't put it down. There's something very raw and real about Zach, and Aribella's strength and understanding is inspiring. Their love story is really special and touched my heart.

This book...it almost twisted me up inside. It is borderline angsty and heavy but thankfully didn't go down that deep. Despite that being said, it is way deeper than most fluff pieces there in that I was on my toes while turning the pages, hoping Zach and Aribelle make it.

Zach is so mad and destructive, of himself and other people. It's the only way he knows to control his environment, when one of the worst things that can happen to a kid happens. And Aribelle was, despite Zach knowing how different she is from all the rest of the people around him, sadly a casualty of Zach. And she never got over it.

So when their paths crossed again, Zach is still drawn to Aribelle and does what he can to keep her beside him. It's a roller coaster of emotions this book. And I'd tense up whenever there's a trip back to when it all happened...and sigh at relief when it's back to the present. Because that's when they can fix their complicated relationship.

i really liked this book! And while I was happy to see their HEA, I wanted more. Hopefully Brent and Taylor get their story too. Maybe Jenika and Mandy as well. That way we can see more of Zach and Aribelle.

I received a copy of this book for my honest opinion.

This is a very well written new adult romance about a super-rich, super-sexy, super-cruel, vindictive teenager and the girl he tormented and bullied throughout high school simply because he loved to hate her. In reality, Zach was horribly mean to everyone around him at that time – his defense mechanism against his own personal demons. When Zach and Aribelle are reunited eight years later he has the same bad attitude and outlook on life. He’s determined though, to get her out of his system for good – one way or another. But it’s a fine line between love and hate. The story is very complex and the characters are compelling, damaged and conflicted. Told from dual POV’s, we are given glimpses of their history through flash backs, doled out sparingly to keep us hungry for details. The plot, full of secrets, lies, and betrayals, ultimately leads to redemption and forgiveness.

Interesting story. Zach and Aribella have a weird relationship from their teenage years. Some parts of the story are a little hard to believe, but the author did explain why the characters became who they are. Zach is a spoiled mega rich kid but has to be the most hateful, maddening guy but you still are pulling for them because you know in the end he will be redeemed. Aribella, is a gardeners daughter, and her parents move her and her sister constantly to avoid getting arrested for stealing from clients. Zach, who takes his anger towards an evil stepmother out on Aribella and threatens to expose her family if she doesn’t run away and never return, even before finishing high school. They are reunited 8 years later and he is still the hateful Zach she always knew. He entraps her into touring with his band for 6 months, but things don’t necessarily go as he planned. HEA.

Eight years is a long time to hold a grudge. Yet that's how this story plays out between Zach Thornwood and Aribella aka Gardener Girl. Just when Aribella thinks she's moved on from the past. A blast from the past in the form of Zach Thornwood and his band rock Aribella's world. A freak accident causes Zach to go into a rage and he takes it out one person Gardener Girl. Zach can't let go of the past and is determined to have Gardener Girl no matter what. Even if he has to blackmail her into being his muse. Can these two find a way past hate into love? Your answers await you in Hate at First Sight.

This book really took me on an unexpected roller coaster from beginning to the end. The characters and story were brilliant, complex, fascinating, real, raw, flawed, complicated, honest, and bold. Ms. Bloom continues to surprise me with the depth of her storytelling skills. I look forward to my next adventure with this favorite author.

Ever want someone so much that you acted like you hated them to mask your true emotions? Zach was completely obsessed with Aribella, his Gardener Girl. He was the consummate jerk, and he could care less about how much he hurt everyone, so long as it gave him what (or who) he wanted, only to end up pushing her away. Eight years later, he's the same person, only we get to see a side of him that he wouldn't show anyone else, not even to Aribella. It was great to see how he came to terms with his true self. This book had all the angst and drama you could hope for in a romance gone wrong, and hopefully gone right. I really enjoyed the depth of Zach's and Aribella's characters, as well as the twists and turning points their relationship took. Loved the highs and lows, from teenage heartache and drama to their battle of wills as grown-ups!

I have read all of Penelope Bloom’s books but she has really outdone herself with this book. Zach is the cruel rich boy that instantly hates the gardeners daughter Aribella because he realizes she sees the real him. Aribella is drawn to Zach even though she knows she should not be and when he ruins her future she runs as far away from him as she can. Eight years later their path’s cross again, Zach is now a famous rock star and Aribella a stage hand. Zach knows that this time he will have her before he lets her go. Aribella knows she should hate him but she just wants to save him. Zach is intentionally cruel but when all of his dark secrets come to light it is emotionally raw and heart wrenching. I could not put this amazing book down and read it all in one evening.

Going to say now, I only read the first story, Hate at First Sight. 3 stars

It had the angst I crave from bully books, though the billionaire rockstar thing was a little over the top. That said, he was a jerk (which I love) and the present time was filled with what ifs.

That said, the biggest annoyance is the flashback. The past didn't make much sense. It wasn't enough to really have this extreme life change. Yes, what he did would make her life different and changed; I'm not saying it doesn't. But her pining for him? Nope. It didn't mesh. It just added to the insta-love syndrome that I don't look for in these types of books.
