Delilah Robbins agrees to go with her father to his new post in Baker City, Oregon as the new Meteorologist. She was expecting the town to be primitive, but to her delight the town was booming.

As they make their way to the home they are supposed to move in they see just how bad the old tenant kept the place or was it robbed?

Deputy Dugan Durfey walks up to see who the pretty lady is sitting on the porch. Once they meet each other they can't keep their eyes off each other. But what happens when his best friend an other deputy Seth, comes into the picture. Neither one of them can keep their eyes off Delilah.

I enjoyed reading about Delilah and Dugan. They work well with each other and all the secondary characters make this heartwarming read phenomenal. We can't forget the raccoon Oliver. He is hilarious to read about.

I have not read the other books in the series but there is enough information on the other couples in the book. The reader will not feel like they are laking any information. It will however make you want to read the other books.

If the title and cover does not bring a smile to your face, this delightful story surely will. From the first page to the last, you will find humor, sweet moments and two handsome lawmen vying for the affections of one Delilah Robbins. Moving with her meteorologist father to Baker City, Delilah is happy to see the town is really booming. When they find the house they are renting in shambles, Deputy Dugan Durfey comes out to investigate. When he and Delilah meet, it is really almost an instant attraction. But he is not the only one feeling that attraction. Dugan's best friend and fellow deputy Seth, is very attracted to her also and tries to court her too.
This story was so much fun and with the introduction of a wily raccoon named Oliver, it gets even better. I love when animals are put into stories.
But all is not rosy as some unexplained things start happening around town and at the mines. People are getting hurt and there is a mystery to be solved.
I have not read the other books in this series but I intend to go back because of how much I enjoyed this story. I was left with a heartsmile and know you will enjoy it to!

The latest and greatest in the author's Baker City Brides series, Delilah Robbins, educated and cultured, accompanies her father to Baker City, Oregon where he mans the weather station. Deputies Dugan and Seth, best friends, both find themselves vying for the beautiful woman's attentions. Delilah is an expert ornithologist making a good living on her published articles and illustrations on birds in the area. She fears losing her independence in marriage but her interest and heart go out to the two handsome lawmen. Along the way, we are treated with the author's masterful descriptions of children, animals, unsavory characters, childbirth, lightning storms, birds, gardens, a home fixer-upper, a menacing mystery, the beauty of Northeast Oregon, and all of the lovable characters from previous Baker City Bride romances. Just when you think you could not get enough of Steve the mule, we are treated with a new animal hero, Oliver the raccoon! As always, this is a stand-alone work but we are enticed to read the rest of this superlative series. Nobody does it better than Shanna Hatfield.

What a phenomenal book and a delight, Lightening and Lawmen left me in complete awe and believing in love.
Shanna Hatfield is exceptional, she has a gifted writing style. I’m always left with a huge smile and a happy heart, after finishing her books.
Delilah Robbin’s sweet nature and joyful disposition is infectious.
As she sets rights to the cottage her and her Papa are moving into, she takes in the most unusual wild pet that just will warm your heart. Oliver is something else, truly a loving inspiration for all pet lovers.
But what is she to do with two deputies pining for her affection?
Enjoy the banter and comedy Ms. Hatfield delivers in this book.
Duban Durfey is one good looking deputy with a heart of gold and a fearlessness that would make any woman melt.
Seth Hatler is equally good looking, kind, and seems to not shy away from asking Delilah out to many social events.
So which deputy will win her affection?
Which one will protect her when her papa’s meteorology station is harmed?
But most of all, which one truly has her heart?
This is Ms. Hatfield’s best historical western romance to date. The history incorporated is exceptional. It’s witty, fun-loving, and just the sweetest story.

What a sweet historical western romance Lightning and Lawmen is! Such a heart warming book that left me believing in romance and happily-ever-afters. Shanna Hatfield had to put in a lot of research into birds and meteorology to write this book. I love a great story that also teaches me about history and professions I know little about. I had never put much thought into how far back meteorology went and when weather data started being tracked to try to predict storms and give out warnings. I own a temperature, barometer and humidity reader that belonged to one my grandfathers and I just might have to start paying a little more attention to it. It just hangs on my wall and I rarely think if it. Shanna Hatfield is one of my favorite authors because of the detail she puts into every book she writes. She truly wants all her books to be authentic in every aspect of the story. So this book is much much more than a romance story.

Delilah Robbins is a well educated young lady that is headed to Baker City, Oregon with her father, Ross Robbins. Her father is a meteorologist that has been assigned his new post out in the west. Delilah is a plant and bird enthusiast and is looking forward to a new environment to study birds and create a sanctuary for them. Not long after their arrival in Baker City Delilah finds herself in the middle of a friendship of two of the towns deputy sheriffs that are both vying for her attention. Delilah is determined to remain a single woman because she likes her independence and would not stand for any man dictating what she can and can't do. Therefore, she sees no harm in taking the attention of both Deputy Dugan Durfey and Deputy Seth Harter, which could easily end in a disaster. Both are handsome, nice, funny and good men. Only one makes her heart race but will she give into feelings for him since she has no intention of ever marrying.

A break in at the Robbins house as well as the weather station puts everyone on edge and is just the beginning to the mystery side of this sweet HWR.

A throughly enjoyable read and you'll love Delilah's lil' wild, unlikely to be a good pet for a bird lover, pet.

Where do I begin to tell why I love this book? First off I love books that have history included. Lightning and Lawmen
had a nice bit of history on meteorology and when and how weather forecasting was started. Even had some history on Ornithologists and The Audubon Society.
The little fury Ollie, Delilah’s pet Raccoon was a fun addition to this story. Ollie’s antics had me literally laughing out loud. Who knew a raccoon can become great protector of his human.
I love Delilah she is such a spunky, yes I can, watch me do what they say a lady shouldn’t or can’t do. She never wants to be dependent on a man and she is making it through life just fine. When Deputy Dugan Durfey arrives to offer his services Delilah just may break a promise to herself never to fall in love.
I fell in love also with Dugan Durfrey he is awestruck when his eyes behold Delilah Robbins. Will Dugan’s code of honor allow his best friend Seth to court and Wooo Delilah?? Will Dugan speak up and profess his undying love for Delilah at the risk of losing his best friend that is like a brother to him?? All these answers and more are awaiting the reader to discover in this book that has more crooks and turns of a wild runaway roller coaster.
A reader will be pleasantly entertained and glad for reading Lightning and Lawmen.
This book is a must read. Lightning and Lawmen is one book that the reader will want to add to the keeper bookshelf. Shanna Hatfield has a way of making the reader fall in love with all the characters of her books from the main to the secondary and on down to even little fur balls like Ollie. Once again as always upon finishing a Shanna Hatfield book I have a new favorite. Each book I read by this wonderful writer makes my love of her books continue to grow

Dugan and Delilah's story

What a ride this one had us on! Even Oliver the raccoon had us laughing and wondering. Dugan giving way to Seth to court Delilah left him and her perplexed. It took a ruse used by Tully and Thane to get Ian to state his love for Maggie. That is what Seth and Tully did for Dugan. But, the surprise of who Hugh Allen really is takes all agast. There is so much history and details in this story that a vivid picture is alive in your mind's eye. Flowers, birds, animals, dresses, plants, bird songs, a naughty raccoon, bird nests with eggs, the foods, weather recording instruments, the evolution of our weather service and it's importance, and even more. Shanna packed it all into this one. There was the birth of Thane and Jemma's first. The draw of Sammy to Jack is so sweet. The friendship between Seth and Dugan is selfless. Slobbery kisses are worth it. These characters have so much depth that we fall in love with them. There has to be more to Baker City to be written. Allie and Ben need to have their family grow as do Maggie and Ian. Please let there be more to uplift us and make our hearts sing with joy.

I adored this book!!
It's a heartwarming, fun & intriguing story. Delilah Robbins accompanied her father
Ross, to Baker City. He is the new meteorologist for the area. She is quite taken with the town. The first person she meets is Deputy Dugan Durfey. Delilah first notices the silver badge & then the most amazing blue eyes with the longest lashes. Seth Harter is another deputy
that works with Dugan. He's just as
enchanted with Delilah as Dugan.
Delilah, her father & neighbors worked very hard to make their cottage a home, after being destroyed by previous
meteorologist. Strange things keep happening around town & at the mines.
People are being hurt. No one can figure out what's going on or what they're after.
Delilah & Seth have gone on dates, while she & Dugan have become good friends.
If only Delilah & Dugan would finally
admit how they feel. It was great to
catch up with the neighbors of Baker City.
I enjoyed this story so much, I could
not put it down.
A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!!

Wow, Shanna Hatfield has done it once again and this one I laughed so hard at one point and almost cried at others but laughter was a highlight for me.
Out of all the Baker City Brides series this is my favorite. I loved the characters; the hero and heroine are perfect and the story has so much that you never know what is coming next.
Have you ever read about a Racoon as a hero? Okay he is one of true real heroes in this story. Oliver is his name and our heroine trained him to be a pet and not hurt her birds or their eggs in her beautiful garden she cultivated just for her birds, mostly.
When our heroine came to town with her father as he took the meteorologist job and both deputies decided to try to court her. One did just that but the other made her heart flutter.
How does she choose and how does Oliver save her life plus the deputy she fell in love with?
Well you have to read this fun and often fast-moving story. Besides fast moving the adventures are often and not always good.
This is definitely a wonderful and fun story to read and you won’t regret it.
But if you haven’t read the other books in this series to get to know the other characters in this series and you will find a lot of independent women for the era they are in. Late 1800’s is a good time to be reading about.

I did receive this wonderful story from the author but was not in anyway compensated for this review or even asked to write one but it is so good and a story I absolutely loved that I wanted to give this review.

I've never read a Shanna Hatfield book that I didn't love and "Lightning and Lawmen" didn't disappoint. Book 5 of Baker City Brides is full of mystery, humor, joy and the sense of belonging.

Delilah Robbins is one character I think most of us like, she's independent, knows her mind and isn't afraid to do what she wants regardless of what society might think. My favorite characteristic is her love of birds and creating a haven for them in her back yard. I can just visualize the beauty that Shanna describes of this haven. I can see myself sitting in the yard, listening to the songs of the birds and breathing in the fragrances of all the beautiful flowers planted to attract the birds. I laughed at Seth and Dugan's competitiveness of the beautiful newcomer and she has no plans to marry! You'll revisit characters from the previous books (if you haven't read any, you need to correct that immediately). Oh, but my favorite, my all time favorite is a little fellow named Oliver. That is all I'm going to say so I don't give the story a way and its taking great restraint not to but you will love Oliver!!!!

Blessings,

Karen

Delilah moved to Baker City with her father who is a meteorologist. Dugan is a deputy sheriff. When they arrived at the house and opened the door they thought it had been robbed or at least vandalized. However Dugan assured them that the previous meteorologist had left it that way. Delilah and Dugan like each other but she has no plan to marry. He finds his best friend also like Delilah and she goes to several events with Seth. Things get confused. Then someone breaks into Delilah’s house and scares her. It’s a good story.

Lightning and Lawmen by Shanna Hatfield

My rating is 4.5 Stars

Delilah’s charm didn’t leave only the deputies falling over themselves to be around her, but attracted even Oliver, the raccoon. After a less than favorable first meeting, she and the little critter declared a truce and even became fast friends. Author Shanna Hatfield did such a great job of including him into the story, not only using an adorable raccoon graphic at the head of each chapter (if you look closely, the raccoon there is made up of flowers – brilliant!), but including Ollie in the text of each chapter as well, allowing him to play a prominent part in this delightful book.

As with many of the author’s heroine’s, Delilah is strong, independent, resourceful, and intelligent. As the daughter of a scientist, she had an inquisitive mind. I enjoyed the way she didn’t let anything deter her from seeking out the birds she was so fond of, including putting on trousers and climbing trees.

Dugan was an interesting man. For some reason, he felt it necessary to hide his intelligence, though not from Delilah. He was head over heels about her but didn’t have the confidence to pursue her, especially when his best friend, Seth, squired her around town. The scene at the dance and the ensuing events were great! The very strong attraction between Delilah and Dugan resulted in some swoony kisses, yet they remained clean and appropriate. It was evident that the pull is not merely physical.

I love the way author Shanna Hatfield managed to impart so much information about meteorology, birds, and other things relevant to the time period into Lightning and Lawmen and yet doesn’t make it sound like she is simply spouting off facts. Each piece of knowledge is wrapped into the story in such a way that it is very natural and just fits.

Included with the romance were a murder and a mystery. Someone was breaking into the weather station and also into Delilah’s house, but why? The way that was resolved was interesting and the rescue was so much fun.

The Baker City Brides (and their husbands) from previous books of the series all play prominent roles in this one, which allowed me to catch up on how they are all doing. The details included from the past were just enough to not make the reader feel lost if they had not read the others and not so many to make those who have read them feel like their story was being rehashed in this one.

Cowboys and miners and hunky deputies, two of which seem to be fighting over the same girl when they are not best friends. Outlaws and call girls and a threat of a rabies outbreak!
A wonderful cast of townsfolk who, if not related by blood, seem to have come together as a family by marriage and friendship.
This is Delilah's story: a well bred and educated woman who travels from the civilized east to the wild west in support of her father's career. Already twenty six years old, she has no dreams of being saddled and tamed by marriage. She is quite capable of earning her own living and taking care of herself...in most instances.
The book is charming and has a dreamy romantic quality. It stresses friendship and presents strong female characters. Full of delightful, sometimes surprising, information. It is a beautiful portrait of the times in which it is set.
While it can be enjoyed as a stand alone, I encourage you to read the other books in this series and get to know all of the wonderful characters and their stories as well.

I accepted this book to review as I have loved other books by this talented author. The rating, review and enjoyment are my own.

WOW, I think this may be my favorite Shanna Hatfield book I have read so far. The wonderful descriptive words had me almost smelling the wonderful flowers in Delilah’s garden and had me strolling down the streets of Baker City like a local. This is the first book of this series that I have read and I will be going back to book one to read about all the fanatic characters I read throughout this book to discover their full stories. This book had a strong female character, drama and a bit of suspense, a love triangle, loving friendships, a mystery, but most of all it had a beautiful romance. I received an ARC copy of this great book and this is my honest and voluntary review that I would highly recommend to any romance reader.

From the first word to the last, I loved every minute of reading this book! The characters came alive and I was completely invested in the story. Delilah had a beautiful elegance about her. She was genuine and comfortable with herself. Dugan was strong and confident and had such a good heart. I loved the way he was always there for Delilah. At times, in quite humorous situations. This book definitely made me laugh! And there was true swoon-worthy romance. Sigh…those kisses! I loved the storyline and the writing. I just loved it all!

I love this whole series! Baker City is filled with wonderful characters and I loved getting to see them again. This is the fifth book in the series, but does stand-alone. The whole series is definitely worth reading, though!

I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.

Too indecisive a love story

Although well written I didn't enjoy this story as much as the others. While the hero was up to expectations, I didn't think there was enough personal involvement or interaction with Delilah to give reason for their love. Indeed there were two men seeking her attention. Right up to the end she was having none of them, wanting to retain her independence yet suddenly she agrees to marry one. Too sudden a change of heart in my mind.
Also I could not see the connection in the name uttered by the first prisoner and then being used in connection to Delilah. Did I miss something in the story?
Lastly, Dugan's tie at the dance. The Windsor knot was only introduced in the 1930's in connection with Edward Duke of Windsor who became King Edward VIII of England for a brief time. Too soon Dugan, too soon.

Delilah and Dugan - such a sweet swoony story

This is a sweet romance set in 1890. Delilah is an educated woman who studies and sketches birds. She traveled with her father to Baker City where her father as been assigned to the meteorology post. Dugan is one of the deputies in the town and felt like the world shifted when he first saw Delilah. But his best friend also seems interested in Delilah and Delilah is not interested in giving up her freedom by marrying. I enjoyed watching their personalities blossom together interaction by interaction while they made their inevitable journey to their HEA. The book included witty dialogue, characters with depth, and an engaging storyline. It definitely gave me all the feels. It was also good to visit with the characters from previous books as the story unfolded.

Great male lead

You couldn’t ask for anything more in deputy Dugan. He’s charming, helpful, handsome, romantic and passionate. However, I was less impressed with his female counterpart. Delilah’s beautiful and smart, but doesn’t have the sense to know that dating two best friends is a bad idea. I’m constantly amazed that the men apologize for fighting when it should’ve been Delilah who was truly sorry. And you would think that one of the older women would’ve stepped in and cautioned her for her failings, especially Maggie. I think there was enough in the story without involving Seth at all. Maggie‘s determination to stay single and be her own woman was enough to overcome.

a Born naturalist

Delilah loves gardens and birds and tames a raccoon that rescues her in the end. Deputy Dugan Durfey loves her from the beginning but fumbles in the romance. Her father is the resident weather reporter but his job and settling their house sends hm back to Washington DC. Meanwhile a robber is terrorizing mines and trashing the weather center and it turns out the ring leader is Dugan’s uncle. Well in any case all is well that ends well so get the book and finish the tale yourself.

I just loved the characters in this story. Delilah Robbins is a headstrong, kindhearted person. Dugan Durfey is just as headstrong, kindhearted and hardworking deputy. When Dugan meets Delilah he is immediately taken with her. You'll fall in love with all the characters of this Baker City Brides book, including the furry bandit named Oliver! A wonderfully unique romance story set in the early west!

This is such a fun story, it has everything you are looking for. One sweet independent sassy girl, two best friends fighting for her attention, and all the characters from the previous books in this series. And if that isn’t enough you mix the humorous antics from a special pet with some suspense and you have an really entertaining story.
I recommend this whole series, you won’t regret reading it.

Mr. Robbins and his daughter move across country for his new job. Delilah is convinced a man would demand her to give up her indepence and be dutiful and obedient. Two of the deputies in her new town vie for her attention. Will she recognize and accept love when she finds it?
This authors books take you on a wild emotional ride. Highly recommend!

I love this book. I have read all of Baker City Brides and Pendleton Petticoats. They are all really great books and are a must read. I am looking forward to reading more by Shanna.
I especially love how she adds the extras at the end . Such as a bit of history about the area where the story takes place. And how she got some of the ideas that she has used. It makes for a very interesting extra read.

Love this book!

I cannot express how much I love this book. Shanna is one of my favorite authors. The story was entertaining and sweet. The fact that she added in all the birds and Delilah’s love for and knowledge of birds was fantastic to me. And then you add Oliver the raccoon and the ladies trying to train him and it was just a wonderful read. Thank you Shanna Hatfield for another great book.

Excellent Read

This is my second reading of this book. It was funny, dramatic, sweet and action packed. Delilah was a strong willed and intelligent beautiful woman who planned to remain single. Why? Because she was afraid she would be made to stay home and forget about her birds and flowers. Along comes handsome Deputy Dugan Durfey and she knows she is smitten. Highly recommend this book.

Great Love Story

This was a good book. I also read Bubbins and Boots but let it go back before I realized it. I like the way you keep the characters going in each story. My Dady was born in 1897 or 96 and he had two children I never knew existed. I found the son my 1/2 brother died in1920 at 6. months. My mother said he left his daughter in NY. I am from CA but my brother died in Nevada.

Wonderful read

Oh, the friendship of the Baker City group. It is very tight! Dugan and Seth have been friends for a very long time, yet Delilah has seemed to come in between them through no fault of her own. How she and Dugan finally realize their feelings and come together is very adventurous, full of good guys, bad guys, and a great friend named Oliver, and beautiful flowers and birds. I really enjoyed this story.
