"At this point, I'm starting to think that if I don't feel something for someone soon, that the notion of sparks will go the way of the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus."
David Taylor just wants to belong. After a childhood of being the perfect son in an attempt to receive the acceptance he so craved, he has finally started living the life he wants. Maybe that means dating men as well as women. Maybe it even means exploring something a little outside the norm, but that fills him with a comfort and completeness he never thought possible.
"I like casual, no-strings sex as much as any man. But in those rare moments when I actually allow myself to wish, I will acknowledge that it might be nice to have a man to come home to."
Arthur Yuen loves men and has a merit badge in flirting to prove it. He also has a big mouth, as evidenced by him calling an adorable stranger "puppy" while at work one day. Who knew his slip would set off a chain of events that brings the two men together in a way neither would have imagined possible?
As Dave and Arthur explore a relationship that includes puppy play, they learn as much about themselves as they do each other. The two men discover a companionship that seems to be a perfect fit until tragedy strikes, and it will take every scrap of determination and understanding to keep their relationship going.
5 Stars because I can't give more... Ok… Let’s see if I can get all the words out (without rambling too much) to properly convey how much I completely, with every part of my being. Loved this book. And I know this book isn’t really real (its fiction), but I am so in love with the subject and premise of this book and these characters. It just makes me so happy! *Sigh*
So, we recently got a little snippet into the lives of Arthur and Dave “Only Need Blue”. I felt that short peek, was totally amazing but also a really mean tease from the Author, LOL. That short story was NOT enough and I just needed more of them. Everything about their relationship intrigued me. And I was thrilled to hear we would be getting a full length story for them.
This book is a really sweet, cute and emotionally heartbreaking story about two guys finding each other and realizing their kinks (accidentally) through puppy play. The characters in this book are extremely likeable and it is now hands down my favorite book in the series. Bumping book 1 “Only with You” from my top favorites spot.
Blue... (Dave) I just love every single thing about Dave and his personality especially when he gets a chance to experience his life as Blue and let himself and Blue shine. Dave is funny and sweet and playful. It’s almost like he had a light-bulb moment when Arthur first calls him “puppy”. You can tell he is just perfectly in sync and relaxed with his thoughts and feelings, and lets everything else fall away while being Blue. It’s so amazing to me when I hear about people just being able to be there selves, and confident with who they are no matter what that entails with absolutely no shame. And that is how it should be in real life as well!!!! Everyone should be as confident and happy with who they are like Dave/Blue is.
Arthur… He is absolutely totally everything that Dave needs; while he’s Dave and also when he’s Blue, you can tell that Arthur loves Dave from the very start of the story when they meet, almost like love at first sight. And while they may not be perfect (because no one is) the author made them perfectly complement each other. Arthur is strong and outwardly confident (even though you can tell he sometimes doesn’t fully feel that inside) and he makes sure that no matter what; Dave feels comfortable with everything that happens between the two of them. Starting with waiting weeks/months just talking to each other before the first date, to making sure that everything they discover about puppy play is what they both want and right for them. Taking all of the steps along the way one at a time, learning that kink and exploring it together. So even though it seems to be pretty insta-love it’s still really not.
After the “accident” I was totally heartbroken for these two guys. I don’t want to spoil the book and give too many details… But… The way Arthur handles the situation is fantastic. I’m not sure what I would do if I was in his spot, but I’m pretty sure I would not have been as together and diplomatic as he was in other words, I would have freaked out. And I freaking Hate (Yes, HATE) Dave’s parents with a passion. What they did was completely and horribly wrong, and closed minded, judgmental, intolerant & ignorant people like that should not have kids; in real life or in books. Uugghh.. I just hate them. I really wish Dave and Arthur would have fought back a little more against them and what they were doing, but in the end it all works out. I am glad that Dave and Arthur had such good friends to stand by them and help them through everything that happened.
No question that this is a fun series and the author combines sweetness, fun, romance and kink very well. I enjoyed both characters and the puppy play worked really well for me; the way David sinks into Blue when he's in puppy mode and the way Arthur completely accepts it.
The thing that kept me from rating it higher were some issues I had once the drama hits.
This was another enjoyable story in the series and I'm really looking forward to finally getting Ben's story next.
I like this series enough that I picked this one up through Kindle Unlimited near the day it came out.
Dave and Arthur make a great couple. It is lovely how much they like each other.
They both struggle with living lives where their parents want them to achieve more. There are some nice rumination in the book on happiness and also retail work.
Dave's parents turn out to be abusive and awful. But the circle of friends rides to the rescue.
Puppy play comes into this book but the emotionial aspect of this kink is clear and sweet in this portrayal.
Only Keep You is the fourth book in J.D. Chambers’ Only Colorado series and I have to say, I really enjoying this series so much. The books are a nice balance of humor and fun, kink and sex, and really sweet tenderness. This story, in particular, just has such a lovely warmth to it and I couldn’t help but totally fall for these guys and want to wrap them both up.
The focus of the first part of the book is on the developing relationship between Arthur and Dave. The two take things slowly, as Dave is kind of a high-stress guy and the idea of dating Arthur, as well as exploring puppy play, is sort of overwhelming to him at first. I loved the sweet and patient way Arthur helps build the relationship between them, always making sure Dave is comfortable and happy. They take things slowly, exploring both their romantic and sexual partnership, as well as learning more about puppy play and figuring out how it will work for them together. There is such a sweet sense of nurturing and care to their relationship, even as there are sexy and steamy scenes. I also really liked the exploration of puppy play here. I think Chambers does a great job really showing us Dave’s puppy headspace, and how he sees and reacts to the world differently when he is “Blue” versus as Dave. I could completely see how this type of dynamic was so fulfilling for both men and these scenes are fun and playful, as well as showing how loved and cared for it all makes Dave feel.
Well, this was ... not what I expected haha. The first half of the book was super sweet and i really enjoyed it then The Bad Thing happened and the chapters after that just made me frustrated haha. It definitely wasn't like oh my god, this book is horrible, more like okay this is not really what I signed up for, so don't let me scare you, if you're not like me and want happy aaaall the time (haha) you should give this a chance! And I have to admit, I did love the ending :)
Nothing particularly special, but I liked that it had an Asian MC and that it explored a more unusual kink in a way I don't usually see. I thought the plot was a bit over-wrought, but okay for what it was
Before reading this book, I read the short story about this couple and wondered how the author was going to incorporate that into this book. She did it perfectly! We get that story but it is enhanced with more detail about the characters and is more spread out to give us more of their story. I liked both MCs after reading the short, but I LOVED them after reading the book.
There is so much more to Dave than I expected. While he is a little goofy and all over the place at times, he is a lot more complex of a character then I realized. Not only is he soooo cute, but he is sweet, independent, loyal and just earnest. I really liked Arthurs character as well and how sweet he was towards Dave. Arthur is also loyal and understanding and we see that as the book goes on.
My heart was torn towards the end of the book. I do not want to spoil anything, but what happens with one of the MCs was difficult to read because of the amount of emotion put into it. It was so well-written and for me, a good addition to this otherwise sweet and light story.
After reading this book, I wanted to go back from the beginning of this series and reread. I am eager to read more from this series and author!
Dave is bi, but has never acted on being with men because of pressure from his father and family. Dave has tried to break away from their influence, but it isn't as easy as it seems. He knows something is missing from his life, but he doesn't realize what it is until he meets Arthur.
Arthur and Dave get together and engage in puppy play. This isn't my kind of kink, but I liked how it was written and all of the characters were respected in all interactions. Their relationship blossoms nicely, and they are great together. Unfortunately a major incident separates them, but they are able to work their way back together. There was no doubt they developed a strong love for each other.
I wish I had seen something about Dave reclaiming himself legally, like getting an emergency contact or having some kind of legal paperwork drawn up stating that his family was not to make decisions for him. If they were able to cancel all of his financial stuff and apartment and get rid of all of his belongings, what is to say they couldn't do it again. He needs some legal security. I know that wasn't probably the point of the story, but after being taken advantage of and having his whole life taken away from him with no repercussions, I felt like this was lacking in the closure of the incident. Just my two cents.
3-3.5 stars

I love JD Chambers' Only Colorado series and was excited to see puppy play in this one. Arthur and Dave's story is sweet, a little kinky, and to be honest a whole lot surprising. I enjoyed the way these men support each other and love each other, and there is some serious chemistry between the two. I like how they grow into this particular kink together. And the way Dave comes to life as Blue? So sweet!
I loved seeing the characters from previous books again, and loved Arthur and Dave. Dave's parents, on the other hand, made me feel all sorts of ragey. The plot took a surprising turn, and something (I am not sure what, to be honest, just..something) about how it went down and what the results of it were didn't work quite as well for me as the previous books did, but I still really enjoyed the story and enjoyed Blue. I loved being back in Fort Collins and cannot wait for Jonathan and Ben!!!
So, Dave and Arthur are basically perfect. *sigh* I love that they are discovering puppy play together - it’s such a different take than most puppy play books when one or both characters are already experienced with it.
My absolute favorite part? Blue! He’s so playful and puppy-like. He does so much more than chase a ball and beg for petting.
This book was funny, sweet, and amazing (because it’s JD Chambers, so of course it is) but had just enough drama to keep me on the edge of my seat and give me all the feels.
I love J.D. Chambers. With each book in this series I fall more in love with the characters and writing but I also love learning about new kinks, even though I may not be interested in for myself. I also love how when introducing me to this new side of things that it's still in a fun, positive and loving way.
This book does touch on subjects that may cause concern for others with a violent mugging and controlling intolerable parents who are more concerned about what othrrs think.
This book is really hard for me to review. I loved it and had issues with it all at the same time. I loved the characters. Arthur is a bank teller and flirts with Dave who comes into the bank and can't find the deposit slip. That's the start of their relationship. There's a lot of just kind of edging around any sort of friendship or relationship for a while but once they get going, I just love them and their relationship and their puppy play. The characters are complex and really build and grow.
Re-read 7/10/19: just as good the second time through, just as angry at the Taylors, just as happy for Arthur and Dave and their triumphs!
Yes, Arthur's parents aren't stellar, but Dave's parents sperm- egg-donors are horrible! How he came out of that house being even somewhat normal, let alone the lovely and social person he is...it boggles my mind. What a wonderful group of friends and found-family here!
Dave has a job he loves working at a gaming store. He's getting pressure from his parents to go back to college and get a real job and also to help his Dad (a judge) by giving speeches during his fathers upcoming retention re election. Dave strongly dislikes his father and has no intention of being anywhere near his father or of going back to school.
Arthur is a bank teller. After being stood up by a Grindr date, he ends up having drinks with some friends who encourage him to attend a kink group night. "I'll keep living it up until I'm shaving grey hairs off my saggy nutsack, or until I find my kinky, power-bottom, monogamous unicorn."
Dave and Arthur meet at the bank and there is an instant attraction and chemistry. I immediately liked both of these men. Dave was funny, sweet and endearing. "No getting aroused at work, dammit."
Arthur calls Dave puppy and Daves mind gets a little bit blown.. He later falls down the online rabbit hole when he investigates it further. "I opened up a can of worms that might just turn out to be caviar instead, but only if I play it right."
Dave wants to explore all the things with Arthur but is scared and reluctant to take the first step. "I have a feeling you are very habit forming, and I happen to be in the market for a new obsession. I don't want to give you up."
Together they start something amazing. They were so great together. The bond between them is powerful.
"I've done the hook up scene, and I know a true connection is a rarity, so I have no qualms about grabbing onto Dave and holding on for as long as he'll let me."
When something awful happens to Dave, upheaval ensues in their lives. Is this the end for Arthur and Dave? Can they find their way back to each other despite the obstacles in their way??
I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and kept me fully invested in the story and hopeful that Arthur and Dave would get the HEA they deserve together.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It started with a lot of fun. Shy, awkward moments that were lightened with witty banter. Then there is the kinky sex. A whole lot of smoking hotness. And the heartbreak. It made me cry and yell and want to kick someone or two. An innocent slip of the tongue is the beginning of an intriguing and somewhat out-of-the-ordinary relationship. Arthur works at a bank. Dave works at the game shop Game Over. Game over? Game on it is for both men. And that game is puppy play. It is something I haven’t read about before, but this author describes it well. It is another form in the BDSM scene, and it is, as everything, based on trust. Trust to be yourself and to let the other be themselves. That is obvious in this story. Arthur and Dave has that immediate trust and connection. Dave is a sweet guy, just like a little puppy, bouncing through life, and he needs the leash Arthur holds in his hands. Whenever they are together, Dave calms down, and most importantly, he gains confidence. Arthur finally finds his other half in a lasting relationship. Something he longed for but never thought he could have. Then tragedy strikes, and let me tell you, without giving spoilers away, it is horrible. The lighthearted and playful vibe I got from this book was destroyed by what happened. It broke my heart. And what Dave’s family did. I can’t even. Uggh. If it was really out of the goodness of their hearts, it might have been a different thing, but now. It all is about appearances. But Dave finds his strength and emerges braver and stronger than ever. It is not easy going. Not in a long shot, but with the deep-rooted love between them they find their happily ever after. This story is the fourth installment in the Only Colorado series and can be read as a stand-alone.
This book is slightly lower on the humor scale than previous installments of this series. Still, it ranks right up there with how much heart exists between the main characters and the familiar and new cast of secondary characters. The attraction between Dave and Arthur is instantaneous, even if Dave needs to work up a bit of courage to jump into the dating side of things. After that, it’s pretty no-holds-barred. On the one hand, the love between them feels a bit too easy; on the other, that love is what gets Dave and Arthur through the second half of the book.
The relationship between them involves a bit of puppy play kink, but even when it trends sexual, it’s filled with love and fun. I especially liked that Dave and Arthur took individual steps toward learning about and joining the community rather than doing everything as a couple. It’s the relationships in romance novels in which the characters remain two people together rather than one entity that give me true faith in their happily ever after together.
The “dark moment” of this book occurs early, and it’s striking in both its surprise and how the after-effects fall out. Romance novels don’t tend to have clear villains, but this one definitely does, and I cheered every time Dave fought back against them. Mental health and dealing with the effects of trauma in a healthy manner are also an important theme in this book that I felt was addressed well. I’m once again looking forward to the next book in this series, especially since it will feature a character we’ve known since book 1!
Only Keep You is the 4th book in JD Chamber's Only Colorado Series. I love this series, but I have to admit this one is way more than I was expecting.
David and Arthur are the center of this story. Arthur can't resist calling David Pup during a stressful exchange. This little slip of the tongue leads to more than either man could have expected.
Arthur learns about being a puppy master, and these two men begin to explore a relationship that includes puppy play. Their relationship becomes very strong and meaningful for both men.
This is the first time I have read such a detailed puppy play relationship. And I love it. I am happy for David that being a puppy allows him to tune out the thoughts going around in his mind constantly.
Of course, things will not be easy for David and Arthur. They will have to fight to be together.
I love David. He is a beautiful character, who grew up with a very controlled childhood. I admire his strength to get away from his family and start exploring what he really wants in life. Through his relationship with Arthur, he finds his true self, a man way stronger than he ever thought he could be.
Honestly, I really love Only Keep You. I appreciate that there is so much going on in the story. JD Chambers does a fantastic job of interweaving a lot of events into this romance. It is a memorable book for sure! I highly recommend it.
Dave is coasting through his life. His last girlfriend broke up with him and told him she hoped he found what he needed. Having no idea what she meant. He found out exactly what he needed when a cute bank teller called him puppy.
Arthur flirts with his customers all the time so calling Dave puppy wasn't unusual. Dave was upset because he lost his deposit slip and Arthur’s comment soothed him. Really soothed him.
Both men realized that the idea of puppy play appealed to them. They started doing research, both liking what they found. Dave bought what he needed to be a puppy and started playing on his own. When he finally got the courage to play with Arthur he knew that puppy play was the answer to questions he never knew he had.
They quickly fell into a relationship. Falling in love. When Dave is hurt in a robbery they are separated by Dave's domineering parents. Arthur thinks he's lost him.
I have to say puppy play is a genre I'm not real familiar with. I didn't know if a whole book on the subject would work for me but I really enjoyed it. I thought it was well done
This is another exceptional book from the Only Colorado series! It is well-written, kinky, fun and I loved it. I could not put it down and I laughed and cried all the way through this hot, hilarious and emotional story. The heat and connection between Dave and Arthur is amazing and I love how their relationship develops slowly as Dave gains confidence in himself and his need to explore puppy play. Arthur is willing to wait for Dave and he is careful not to scare him away. They are learning together to navigate this new world of kink with the help of friends and a group in Denver. Just when they are settling into a committed relationship Dave is mugged and seriously injured and his family use that as an opportunity to separate him from Arthur, his life and all of his friends. Dave will have to find the courage to leave his family and return to the ever patient and loyal Arthur. The secondary characters are wonderful and it's great to catch up with some of them from the previous books. I love the ending and I can't wait to read the next book in this fantastic series.
Sometimes a series can become formulaic. We get the same kinds of characters, or the same plot, or both. Chambers has never done that to us. Once again, we get two new characters, met briefly before, but not yet known to us. They are fleshed out, complicated, and always fundamentally sweet and good. They have their own story.
Only Keep You takes place over the course of a year, and its HEA is hard won, but more believable for it. Much like the first book in the series, the kink in this one isn't one usually found "out in the open," but Chambers puts it there and shines her light on it, and soon all that is good and right about it *for these characters* is evident. I love her for this. She has the rare ability to truly let us celebrate the gift that is human diversity. Also sexy fun times, because who doesn't love that?
Watch for the scene with the little girl and Blue at the Pride parade. It played out in my head and my heart in full color.
So, I skipped this book when I first read the series, because I knew I wouldn't really vibe with the kink. I picked it up now because I enjoyed other books from this series but read that the author has stopped writing since, so there won't be any new books from them and I wanted to give it a try. I didn't vibe with the kink. But the problem really is the plot. I don't really see how parents could show up and change the entire life of their adult (!) son. I mean, I don't know how it is in other countries, but around here you don't get any information on adults from a health care provider unless you have a form. I can also imagine quitting job and terminating leases for other people wouldn't be as easy. I just don't see how it makes sense The relationship is also rushed. I mean, I get they've been texting for a while, but who gets together on their first date? The other books in this series captured me with their nuanced characters, but this book just wasn't for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Arthur!!!! Gah, am I happy that this flirty bank teller got his HEA! and DAVE!!!! Dave, Dave, Dave....
These two boys...I just adored this story. I don't want to spoil too much for you, but, if you aren't into books with a very specific kink , then this probably isn't for you. BUT, if you are like me, and the kink doesn't bother you...and honestly, I can take it or leave it, depending on how it is written....then you will find this book to be super sweet and endearing. I loved Dave, he was literally just this sweet man who needed someone like Arthur in his life to calm him, to guide him, and to love and nurture him. And Arthur, having lived his life these far not in a relationship, just enjoying life, finds his perfect match in Dave. It's definitely fate that these two meet!!
Now......I am very patiently waiting for Ben's story......
Oh, I love a good puppy play book. This is the story of Dave and Arthur. Dave's last girlfriend broke up with him and told him she hoped he found what he needed and wanted. Poor Dave had no idea what she meant by that Until Arthur helped him at the bank one day. Dave found out exactly what he needed when Arthur the bank teller called him puppy one day. Arthur flirts with all his customers but calling Dave a puppy while at work was something else. Poor Dave was upset because he had lost his deposit slip. Arthur ’s puppy comment did something funny to Dave. Can these two let go and figure out how to come together and help one another?
I have loved this entire series and this is no exception. Beautifully written story that takes you on a journey as Dave and Arthur discover themselves and each other through love, understanding, support, patience and puppy play! Dave and Arthur are wonderfully perfect together and I was devastated when tragedy struck Dave and I felt so bad for Arthur with what Dave's family did. I really like Arthur's determination and unwavering support and faith in Dave throughout everything. I loved going on this journey with them and can't wait for more books in this spectacular series. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
That is what first got my attention and it works well because I think it got yours too. This book is so much more than that. What I love about reading different stories with puppy play is that it shows you exactly that each relationship is different. Knowing and being shown are two different things. It also shows how trust is paramount in a true loving relationship regardless of kink. In my opinion that can never be stressed enough. I'm so glad the author is continuing on this series and I can't wait til the next one comes out.
This was a fun enjoyable story even though it was a bit unrealistic. Arthur and Dave are absolutely adorable together and very sweet. They are both brand new to puppy play though so how smooth things go and how advanced they are in such a short time was a little confusing. Same with the rope play. One lesson from a guy and Arthur is rigging like a pro? The stuff with Daves family was a little dramatic and unrealistic too. I really did like the story. You just have to go into it with the right mindset.
Arthur and Dave are such a fun and adorable couple. And sexy, too! I am usually not a big Puppy Play reader... Kink books sometimes leave me feeling awkward about what I read - not Only Keep You. The Only Colorado Series by JD Chambers does kink in such a way that it makes me want to read more about the characters and their story. This is a definite for me.
I've read all the previous books in the series, and I was super excited to see this one would feature puppy play. That aspect, I loved about the book, as well as the beginning (how they met...too cute!) and the ending. The middle with all the drama was a bit too unbelievable at times,
(spoiler alert)
especially why those two wouldn't manage to contact each other when David was in the hospital. That felt too unrealistic for me and yanked me out of the story. Still, a lovely read.
It’s rare that I’m surprised when reading, I read so many books that I usually can accurately predict what will happen next. This was the first time in a long time that was not the case! I won’t spoil that surprise for anyone else but this book was really good! Loved David and Arthur! Each book in this series could be read as a stand-alone but I strongly recommend the entire series.
I love this series! It covers all kinds of different sexualities and kinks. The love between them just makes you wanna go, ‘awwww’. I haven’t read very many puppy play books but I like how Blue was portrayed and the bond between handler and puppy was shown. I can’t wait for more!
