Petr Horáček is the author-illustrator of Look Out, Suzy Goose and Silly Suzy Goose, as well as Run, Mouse, Run!; Bird, Fly High; A New House for Mouse; and Strawberries Are Red. He lives in England.
One Saturday morning Goat decided that she’d had enough grass and herbs and wanted to try something new to eat. From the dog’s food, to the farmer’s pants, Goat ate everything she could find.
When she had finished eating she started to turn a funny colour, and began to feel very poorly. In fact, she was poorly all week, but did Goat learn her lesson?
The Greedy Goat is a wonderful children’s story about a goat who doesn’t care what she eats, as long as it’s not grass or herbs.
The book is full of bright, colourful, full page illustrations that are simply stunning. They are very helpful for those that can’t read yet to understand the story fully, without the need for words.
I can see this amusing story making young children giggle as they follow Goat’s antics. A book that children will want to read over, and over again.
When Goat gets tired of eating the same old herbs and grass one day, she embarks on a course of sampling, trying: the dog's food, the cat's milk, the pig's potato peelings, the farmer's wife's plant, the farmer's daughter's shoe, and the farmer's own underwear. Needless to say, after all of that, our caprine heroine isn't feeling all that well...
The Greedy Goat is my first picture-book from prolific author/illustrator Petr Horáček, an expatriate Czech artist now living in the UK. I found the story itself amusing, and suspect that young children will likewise enjoy the silly humor of goat's gustatory misadventures. The mixed media artwork is colorful and immediate, capturing the zany nature of goat's story quite well. Recommended to all young picky eaters, and to anyone looking for entertaining new picture-books featuring farmyard amimals.
This would be a fun, enjoyable read aloud class story for FS and KS1 children, it’s not too long so would be perfect to read at the end of the day or lunchtime. The pictures are nice and bright and children would find it funny as the goat eats all sorts of things after becoming bored of grass until she becomes poorly. It reinforces days of the week which may be helpful for young children too.
What a fun tale! The poor little goat in this story does not know when enough is enough. She eats and eats and eats until she's sick as a dog. Then she goes through a pretty long recovery phase and everyone (including the farmer and his family) think she's learned her lesson. But has she??? Will Goat ever learn?
This would make a really good companion story to Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar in a storytime or puppet show setting. Children will roar with laughter as Goat gets into mischievous situations time and time again. I love that the author weaved both days of the week and various colors into The Greedy Goat in a simple, unobtrusive way. Bravo!
I wanted to like this more than I did. It was funny and had a cute goat concept, but it just didn't connect with me the way that I wanted it to. Young readers will enjoy the color changing goat and the repetitive actions though.
For: fans of goats/farm animals; readers wanting a quick read.
Possible red flags: gluttonous goat activity and characters without important possessions like pants and shoes could be stressful for some readers.
This is such a funny book it really made me laugh aloud! 'The Greedy Goat' has such a simple story but it's so silly, kids will definitely enjoy reading it again and again. The paperback is wider but shorter than A4 in size and is filled with colourful images on thick glossy paper. The story is simple, Goat is greedy and having had enough grass she tries a variety of different foods, including typical goat things such as eating a shoe! I won't spoil the rest of the tale but it's very funny and there are some great images throughout.
The illustrations really make this story so funny. I do like Horáček's style, each picture looks like a combination of pencil, crayon and paint. Each illustration has a lot of humour in it especially when Goat starts to feel strange after eating so many odd foods. I don't think this book would be so funny if it wasn't for the images!
The ending is really great and has a funny twist on the last page that really made me laugh out loud! The story isn't just fun to read but at the same time kids will learn the days of the week as well as several colours and some animals. And the simple repetitive sentences make this even more enjoyable. I can't say a bad word about this book and love looking at it over and over again. I think adults will find it fun too. It's definitely a book I would have loved as a child and would recommend it to everyone, it's one of my favourites I've read this year! -Thanks to Walker Books for a free copy.
‘The Greedy Goat’ is a tale about a hungry goat who gets tired of eating his herbs and grass and looks elsewhere at other farmyard animals’ food, his owner's clothing and more. The goat eats anything he can find! To no surprise, the goat gets very poorly, but does he learn his lesson? Petr Horáček is the illustrator and author of this amusing and visually bright book. The mixed media artwork, combined with pencil, crayon and paint, is filled with colourful and eye-catching pages. The artwork is one of the most exciting aspect of this book. This would be the perfect book for storytime in an early years or KS1 classroom as it is such a short, fun and repetitive story! The children will be in fits of laughter at the mischievous goat. It is a great book for vocabulary, days of the week, colours and farmyard animals. It can be compared well to Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
This fun story is about a goat who (one day) wants to try eating something new and starts by eating other animals’ food. She also eats different clothing items of the farmer’s family. As a result, she eats a lot that day causing the others to wonder where their things have gone (things that she had eaten). She ends up feeling bad for a few days, and, after that, only eats her food after that (until she eats the farmer’s boots).
I like this book for the humor, and the easy-to-understand story. The book has a great ending, where it shows that the goat has not learned her lesson.
For clinic, this story can be utilized with pragmatics in pointing put the consequences with stealing, and have the clients interpret the meaning behind the story.
Age: Toddler-Preschool Concept: Days of the week, colors Emotion: Greed
Goat feels the comeuppance of his gluttony when he gets a terrible tummy ache for the rest of the week. Although Goat doesn't make amends for his greed (because, well, he's a goat), the rest of the characters aren't irreparably damaged by Goat's actions and get replacements for everything that was taken from them. The audience for this book is probably not for the greedy (and learning how to be a better person) but for those learning how to cope with someone else's greediness or inherent selfishness (like a younger sibling).
The Greedy Goat by Petr Horáček, is a vibrant, bright, fun story about a goat who decides that she is hungry. Horáček is able to make Goat come alive with his descriptives about her antics and with brightly coloured pictures. In the story Goat progressively eats items that no goat should consume and then spends a week recuperating. Petr Horáček helps young readers identify the days of the week along the way. The book is ideal for preschool to about six year old aged children. The Greedy Goat is a fun book to read with your kids and will likely become a favourite at bedtime.
The Greedy Goat is fed up with just eating herbs and grass, so she decides to help herself to some other tasty morsels, such as the other animals' food, the farmer's underwear, etc. Of course, this does not sit well with her stomach, which leads us to learning colors and days of the week. I enjoyed the illustrations and think this would be a great book to share at story time, reminiscent of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Kids will get a laugh out of the things the goat eats and her recovery process.
I thought it was cute and the pictures were really captivating and simple. Would you recommend it? Ya i think it’s a good book for little kids because it has bright pictures and gives a good message of not being greedy. Is the storyline or is the art the greatest strength? I think the art is better than the storyline because the storyline is something that has been used before. Is it a picture book that could be used with older students to teach literary elements? Ya I think this is a simple of a book that it could be helpful for introducing kids to identifying literary elements.
This is the story of a goat that eats food and objects that don't belong to him. He gets sick for several days and turns many colors. Each page has only a small amount of text with large illustrations. Days of the week and colors are mentioned several times, and this book could be used to help teach them to children. It could be used in a storytime on colors, days of the week, goats, farms, animals, or food.
Great book with vocabulary, days of the week, colors, and a little about goats and their eating habits. Its a fun, funny book about a Goat that eats anything in it's path, but his tummy doesn't like it so much.
Farm life. Goats. Vocab lesson.
I think school age kids would enjoy this the most, so teachers and elementary school librarians fit this one in. However, it could work for a family storytime too.
This book is about a goat on a farm that is tired of eating his food, so he eats everyone else's food and things. Then, he gets sick and everyone is looking for their things. As soon as he gets better, he eats the famers boot.
This book was very sweet and would be easy for kids to understand. I think that it would be a good quick read in a classroom, for fun.
I would use this book to teach my students that you shouldn't be greedy and be grateful for what you have.
This is a fun title told in a folktale style and there is no information within the book that it might be based on a folktale. That said this is a good read, written with humor. The illustrations are wonderful and the greedy goat takes center stage. This title is not to be missed, and Horace’s is a favorite illustrator of mine.
In Petr Horacek's, The Greedy Goat, Goat decides she wanted to eat something new so she goes around the farm dining on the dog's food, the cat's milk and even the Farmer's underwear! What happens next will amuse and delight little people ages 2 - 6. This simple but lighthearted story would be a good addition to your favorite farm books.
Floss adored this one when Petr read it to us at The Hay Festival. It reminded me a little of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Floss loved following Petr drawing the goat in the story and then she drew all the breakfast items goat had stole and eaten that made him feel a little off colour. Floss thought he was a very cheeky goat!
Goat has had enough of eating grass. She wants to try something different – the dog’s food, the pig’s potatoes and even the farmer’s pants. But things go wrong in this hilarious, but cautionary, farmyard tale.
Simple, amusing story with colors and days of the week. Goat wants to try eating something new - she's tired of eating grass and herbs. But while things taste delicious it doesn't mean they're good for you.
A super funny book about a goat who decided she wasn't eating grass anymore. So goat ate a whole bunch of items she wasn't supposed to and got sick. My favorite part was eating the farmer's underpants! A great and funny story for storytime.
A very hungry goat (kind of) learns an important lesson after making some very unwise but comical meal choices. Big print, brief text, and vibrant illustrations make this an engaging story for toddlers and preschoolers.
Goat, tired of eating herbs and grass, decides to eat new foods all around the farm, including dog's food, pig's potato peelings, and the farmer's underpants!
A very silly story that will surely get laughs from storytime children.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar meets Pinkalicious. A greedy goat eats all kinds of things until she makes herself so sick she turns green. The image of the green goat lying on her back with her feet up really looks like she's dead. But she recovers.
