He has destroyed empires, erased entire civilizations, crushed armies of millions. No man, woman, or child is safe from his wrath. No god or monster. He is an unstoppable force. A god who kneels to no one.
At least until Jessie Collins became a part of his life
This book is an "end for now". The timeline begins before book 6 and ends after book 8. It will meet up with the timeline of those books in books 10. The Stone God contains lots of side information that occurred in books 6-8 that only make sense when applied to this particular story. But it will also help you understand some of the motives of certain characters in those past books as well. Again, this isn't the final story. You're just getting a different perspective of that downward spiral into hell. As well as a lot of information that you will need to understand the next installment. Trigger warning: About 100 times the recommended daily dose of vitamin D. Side effects may include, sore jaw, sitting crooked, not sitting at all, pain when swallowing, back pain, knee pain, muscle cramps, sleepiness, staying up all night reading, and disturbing thoughts. Use care when operating battery-powered devices. Proceed with caution. And a lot of lubricant.
Georgia born and bred, I am an artist, a writer, and a general pain in the ass. I spend most of my days working on my next book or bettering my art. Writing is my identity and I love every minute of it. It's work, lots of work (sometimes I work 12+ hours a day and I never get a vacation) but I don't regret doing it. I currently share my house with a myriad of dogs, a few cats, a saltwater aquarium filled with coral and fish, as well as my partner who's great at giving hugs when the day's been rough. And of course, my editor and PA, who helps me keep life reasonably organized. At least so I won't walk out the door without wearing pants.
No, there are no Leo, Kaleb or Aaron sightings here, but I don’t think you’ll miss them too much. This installment is one of the best of the series.
The timeline here runs from around Book 6, Crocuta Crocuta, through the end of Book 8, God of Monsters, but we get a different perspective on what has been going on. We are also introduced to another one of Alton’s genetically engineered doxies, Jessie, and finally get to know Marud. We’ve met him before when he confronted Cerberus and have gotten a bit of his backstory from his brother Malum, but we really get to know him here as he claims his doxie and investigates the fires linked to the Association’s properties and people. That’s just the start of what is going on as Marud is soon forced to join forces with Alton – not something he does happily.
There is plenty of focus on Jessie and Marud. Jessie should have been raised to know what he was and trained as a doxie, but life didn’t work out that way. He has some memories and does some digging and does figure things out. He’s like a more refined, stronger version of Kaleb. He’s independent, not afraid to speak his mind and working his way through figuring out just what being Marud’s doxie means. Marud is one of the oldest gods and he is set in his mission. He will do anything to ensure the safety of all doxies and that usually means murder and destruction. When Jessie enters his life that focus is even more intense when it comes to his doxie – whether Jessie likes it or not. Enter Oliver, the man that Marud buys to be Jessie’s “pet” – his companion and guardian when Marud isn’t there. Oliver is thrown into a situation where he is pretty clueless and afraid for his life, but at the time he has nothing left to lose. Oliver just stole my heart and I need to see him happy and I think he can find that happiness through his service to Jessie, especially with the way this ended, Jessie is going to need him!
Of course, there is plenty of sex, but this book also provides so much more information on the world the books are set in and what is happening. There were more details on the Great Collapse – who caused it – and the effects. We get some more insight into Alton’s plans, abilities, motives and the men who are trying to destroy him and the gods. I’m still not happy with what he did, but I understand him a bit more. He and Marud don’t get along but they do have a common goal – to save the doxies.
One of the best things about this story was that getting a different perspective from Marud’s side and more from Alton, about what has been going on throughout the last few books. This one really tied together a lot of the threads. I now feel like everything is coming together as far as the forthcoming Tide, the goings on at Purgatory, the mysterious fires and who is behind everything. (I do have two nit-picky questions about the book – whatever happened to Brian and why did nobody use that beautiful aviary/park that was described?)
Anyway… The ending!? Be warned it’s a cliffie, but hey, if you’ve gotten this far you really should expect it.
4.5 stars. Oh, I love Marud and I really love Jessie. My two favorites right up until the end of this book (which isn't the end of ANYTHING) because this isn't a cliffhanger, it's a cliff dive. Right off the edge of the cliff!!
4.5 stars ....WOW how can it end like that !!! This series, while gritty and dark, really is addictive. I love how the characters have evolved and the storyline behind each of them gives us just a teaser of further insight. This book focused on Maraud and Jesse. Clearly Maraud has control issues and has a love and respect for doxies that borders on obsession, but with his own Doxie Jesse he is in a whole new ballpark ! While Jesse loves and adores him, his spirit is one that pushes Maraud - little does he know that Maraud will not bend on his beliefs, no matter what. His brother in purgatory is a testament to that. The side story with Oliver is interesting and I sense more to come - I hope he’s attracted a certain Centaur who really deserves love. I definitely want Leo back, but that may be a pie in the sky. Who knows where this all goes but hopefully elements of this story are linking tighter now. Awesome non stop read for me.
Mmmnngghhh!!! Adrienne Wilder is proving to be a master of cliffhangers!! Not only that, she’s also really good with the mysteries and science-y things. I don’t doubt they’re figments of her imagination but gosh, it sounds so legit, you know? I’m gonna have to reread this to fully digest all the morsels of information she heaped in this instalment!!
I feel like we’re finally getting to the juicy bits of the entire series. The Tide?? The monsters?? The reason the chimera poisoned Kaleb? And the entire 3-book series about the gods in purgatory. And do we finally get to unmasking the villain?? I’m so excited!!
But I can’t help but feel a little despair because she doesn’t say when the next book will be out!! 😱😩😭
I'm the edge of my seat. I could not put this baby down when I got home yesterday around 5 pm. It is now 12:41 am and I just finished. I'm so tired and elated 😂 about this installment. So many questions have been answered but more have surfaced.
I feel so bad for Marud and Jessie. But Marud can't even change for the Doxie who holds his heart. But we will see what happens in the next book.
This is the best book of the series to date. Why? There’s a storyline instead of loads and loads of sex. Don’t get me wrong, I love sex, but I want a full blown story, fleshed out and the works, and then the sex to compliment, enhance the story and/or characters. This is a great storyline, I might add. Highly recommended!
My thought process when I started this book *i’m gonna read this slowly so I can enjoy it*, right. Fast forward to the end of the day where I was already at 90% of it. Ah well. 🤷🏻♀️
I’m in awe at Wilder because this series started basically like super hardcore kinky sex but after book 3, it became so much more. Yeah, there’s still the sex but now it’s just something you have to read to get to the real plot. Well played, Wilder.
I seriously loved this one. I loved Marud. He’s a force of nature. There’s no other way to describe the Stone God. He’s fearless and strong but he does anything and everything to protect the doxies. It’s so pure. I could have done with how it ended tho. Not because Sorry, Jessie. You don’t deserve the giganourmous cock anymore.
It is sort of driving me crazy, but in a good way, the mix of the timelines. Tho I’m glad that apparently on book 10 all stories will merge. I’m a bit scared about next book and I’m still praying my god Leo returns. Still not over it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I did NOT like Marud AT ALL. I kept going because the storyline is very appealing and I really want to know how this all ends but these characters... NOPE! Not a fan. Highly annoying!
I mean, yeah. My expectations were high. I really liked Malum in the previous book. He was a tough bastard but we could fell his love for Wren. His friendship with Taurus❤️
And I thought Marud would be the same. Well fat chance of that! He was just a psychopath. No attachment to anyone. Even his doxie Jesse. It felt more like obsession. The same obsession he has toward all the doxies in general. "Doxies are precious. Doxies need to be cherished"... Well ok but are you aware there is a person there... Even the Chimera was more empathic! I hated how he treated Oliver.
Oliver..💔 This is the only new character that I liked here. He just broke my heart.
Jesse. Well. At first I thought I would like him. Then the way he acted at first with Oliver just pissed me off but he redeemed himself after and treated him like a friend. However. I felt absolutely no connection between him and Marud. Nothing!
So I"ll continue to book 10 which I thought was the last one but considering where we are, I'm guessing we are nowhere near the end!... Well, I want to know now!!
It's a cliffy! and I was not prepared for the cliffy!!! I didn't read the books before this but I'm def invested now in knowing what happens next.. grr!
These cliffhangers---WHY?!?!?!?! Good Lord, I am not going to handle the waiting very well. I LOVE Marud!!! And poor, poor Oliver, my heart broke for him. I did really enjoy Jesse as well, and while I still hate Alton, it was good to see some of the other goings-on and seeing what they have to fear and the things happening outside of sanctuary and purgatory. Love the series. Can't wait for the next one.
I have had some serious moping going on with the last few books in the series because, well, Leo and Kaleb. Anybody who has been reading the series will know exactly what I mean. Those of you who haven’t need to stop right now and start from the very beginning because everything will make more sense. And of course, hello Leo and Kaleb! However, I knew The Stone God was not going to be giving me the answer I so wanted and if L&K were going to be in this book at all it would just be in comment passing. So, I have decided to put my big girl panties on and stop the pissing and moaning.
Color me surprised! The Stone God had a completely different vibe to it than what I expected. I’ve gotten quite used to the God/Doxie meshing. The whole sex/pain/ambrosia/toys/play/punishment has gotten to be very familiar and the shock has worn off. Now, none of that is missing from this book but this time around it has a different feel to it. What makes it so different is Marud and Jessie and the fact that their lives take place outside of Sanctuary and get this, there is no Doxie dogpiles and group sex shenanigans. WHAT?! Trust me, I am just as shocked as you. 0.o
Yet it worked! We really get to see/hear/feel/taste a God and Doxie dynamics in action. Well, sort of. Jessie is a Doxie but wasn’t raised as one. Say what? How is that possible you say. Pssst, neither was Kaleb. As for Marud, I have this love-hate thing for him. He really cares for Jessie, but he has the righteous no shades to gray thing when it comes to Doxies in general that can be very… Well, just very.
Now there are three things that really sold me on this story. The second and third really tie closely together and without giving too much away I will just say I’ve always wondered what Alton’s god gifts were and I’ve never been much into history unless it is presented in a way that it is so sneaky I don’t know I’m getting educated. And the number one reason The Stone God worked for me: Oliver. Oh, Oliver! I had some teary eye moments over him. Adding him into the mix definitely made a huge impact to the point I am willing to forgive the author for that very abrupt ending. Yes Adrienne, I liked him that much and if you would like to continue being in my good graces you’ll chop-chop on the next installment. PLEASE!!!
I received this book from The JeepDiva with the express purpose of an honest review. The opinions, contents, and rating of this review are solely mine Stars – 5 Flames - 5
Had no intention of taking up cliff diving.......and then I read the end of this amazing installment in the Bound Gods series by Adrienne Wilder. I'm mean, come on, it's either dive off the cliff, or hang on by fang and claw until the next story, Pandora's Heart, is released. ACK!!! Bring on the next book. before I twist over the edge like a sprung Slinky, FFS. ;)
Yeah, I'mma need that next book soon. "Late Spring" cannot get here fast enough as far as I'm concerned.
Another great installment in this series. I think the only thing that kept me from fully 5-Starring this is how Marud treated Oliver. You'd think given his rescue of Jessie, of knowing how he was sold and used as a boy would make him a little more sympathetic toward toward the man. Yeah, he's not a Doxie, but still. We know what Marud is capable of; his gruesome past is detailed in several passages/conversations. So, IMHO, the were just...a bit horrific. (I hesitate to cast blame completely on Marud though because I'm not even sure if Max divulged where Oliver was purchased or if Marud knows knows of Oliver's disfigurement. I don't know what AW's motivation was for having him be so extreme...unless it's to foreshadow how he deals with ?)
Plus...well, I love it when other authors' books are referenced or their characters show up in an unrelated tale as a cameo. BUT repeatedly mentioning a couple of contemporary writers (who also specialize in dark stories)? That was a bit off-putting. I don't know if the passage quoted is in an actual Pyke or Tonlet book and as such I had to completely skip it because I haven't read any of the former and only that deliciously dirty 'cesty story co-written by the latter. I didn't want to be spoiled for any of them (I have a bunch by each on my TBR).
Also, did I miss something, or did Brian just disappear? I was looking forward to seeing how he would be incorporated into Marud's household. Max seemed to really get along well with him, and I think communicated using some sort of sign language. But once he's brought back to the compound & given a room...he's never really seen again.
(Aside: If anyone has any pics that might be fitting for Zen, with his sexy dresses & heels - or combat boots - I would appreciate the sharing! My Google-Fu isn't turning up anything other than some of Job from Banshee, but he doesn't look like Zen is described. But OMFG the clothes that character wore! FIERCE!)
Oh, and before I forget: Alton is still a hard character to appreciate. That hasn't changed at all. I know he makes the hard choices and whatnot and his sole mission is to save the Doxies (and thus the gods, like him)...but still, I'm hella pissed at him for Leo. And I'm extremely apprehensive of his plan to . I can't see that going well...
Seriously, can't wait to see how this whole saga plays out.
This is the first in the series that I straight up just didn't like. I didn't like any of the MCs (except Alton, though I don't know if I would consider him a MC in this book as such) and I REALLY don't like Marud. Maybe we aren't supposed to? Listen I like a killer as much as the next guy, but this guy is straight up racist (speciest? I mean all gods are human but he doesn't like the ones who don't LOOK human. To the point where he seems to kill them on sight? Not totally clear. Plus he kills monsters on sight even though we're told constantly that monsters are people.) He kills indiscriminately and constantly threatens one of the MCs who really just doesn't deserve it. He's the definition of the worst alpha male you've ever seen.
That said, he's not even the worst part of this book and I realize some people are going to love him and that's totally cool, he's just not for me.
The worst part in this book is the straight up rape. There are three scenes involving this and I couldn't do it. Yes I realize what the gods and doxies have is kinda rapey, but they have a species dynamic and lore. This is just between two normal ass humans. It was not okay, not warned about, and served zero purpose. Oscar as a character felt like completely unnecessary filler, but maybe he matters later, I dunno. In the context of this book, there is no reason for him to exist. He doesn't do anything, he doesn't push any plot forward, he just kinda exists to get bullied by Marud and raped by another character. That's it.
I ALMOST feel like I could have skipped this book entirely except there ARE a couple important plot points. Not enough to fill a book this long, but they are there.
I think I might be a little less salty if we had jumped to other important characters. Maybe not all of them, maybe just Cerberus and his doxie, anything to smooth over the alpha-hole jerk that is Marud.
So yeah, worst one yet, but I am very much looking forward to the next one!
Please stop ripping out my heart and stomping on it!!! I'm not going to beg... cause well it's obvious that will just c encourage this nasty behavior!
First you broke Leo then Aaron then ...well it seems to be a theme
I read a lot of fantasy paranormal , usually I have no problem solving the puzzles. With this series something is screaming that I'm missing an obvious point . Idk what I do know is each character you have introduced, each new puzzle piece you have presented has drawn me in a little bit more.
I really need Zen's story. Don't know why but him and the priest.
On my tablet corrected review to follow I grabbed the next in series so can't say when 👿
Thank you Adrianne for the good read. Ilove the story line and idea, especially the beginning. Most of the characters are awesome. There was just something difficult when getting into the flow of action. Sometimes I was wanting more, sometimes I skipped ahead because it felt redundant or like fluff. I'll continue reading because I want to find out where the story goes.
Why Jessie why? I feel like I’ve been edged enough. I need to know what happens now or I’ll cry (FYI Adrienne Wilder). This book was fun but a bit long. I love the extra info we got from Alton and the other characters. I missed Leo and his doxies terribly. I can’t wait to go back to purgatory and see how Kaleb is faring on. This series amazing but the book is exactly what you expected, a filler. I can’t wait to see how everything comes together in the end.
I gave this 5 stars because I am reviewing it as a whole. The story is so terrific and original. I love many of the characters. My only issue is that it needed something more. One character is too pathetic and tragic. That is his only color. Another character is too controlling and unable to bend. This was the theme that was just a little overwhelming. BUT Alton for the first time became a complex creature with great heart. The book is wonderful.
From the first page I was entranced. Story so gripping at each turn of the page. This has it all... fighting, sex, blood, gore, and gods. You get so caught up in the relationship then gut punched at the end...let's hope there's not a long wait for the next installment
This is a straying from my usual read. I found my self challenged but entertained and engaged. This was the last available in the series and I expect it to be a bit for the next in the series to be available. So I’m not sure if I missed something or their was an editing but I’m unclear about what happened to Kaleb in purgatory and what is Leo’s status.
I was so bored with this one, it took me forever to finish. I didn't find the MCs to be the least bit interesting, and the plot heavy scenes weren't any better. The only reason I trudged through this one is because I've been wanting to read Pandora's story for a while now. I'm really hoping that one doesn't turn out to be a disappointment!
This story is always evolving, it is not repetitive at all! I am on the edge of my seat waiting to get back to Purgatory (and Leo).....and Pandora with the Goddesses!!!!! Can't wait for the next one.
I don't like cliffhanger. There is difference between rough play and abuse. I stopped reading at 25% and jumped to the end. I am glad did and not wasted any more time reading it.
I want to write a review but ...... basically you need to read this highly awesome book and when you get to the end you too will be staring at your screen thinking wow so that just happened.
I'll give the sodding author *edging*. Just gimme more books now!
