Christmas is fast approaching, and Lizzie Grace and her witch familiar, Belle Kent, are hoping it’s going to be a quiet one.
But those hopes are dashed when, on a quest to find a customer’s errant husband, Lizzie comes across the body of a witch and a dark circle of power neither she nor Ashworth can break.
Then werewolves begin to turn up dead—skinned.
As the body count rises, and the hunters become the hunted, it’s evident there’s a new evil in town.
One that is determined to claim the reservation—and the wild magic—for his own.
Keri Arthur, author of the New York Times bestselling Riley Jenson, Guardian series, has now written more than 25 books. She's received several nominations in the Best Contemporary Paranormal category of the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Awards, and recently won RT's Career Achievement Award for urban fantasy. She lives in Melbourne with her daughter and two crazy dogs
And yet another amazing follow on in the Lizzie Grace series.
I have to admit though, with this one there was a point in the story where I was scared to read on, I was actually scared of what may happen - but I got there!
Well we have book #3 now in this series which is turning out to be one of the better things Keri Arthur has written IMHO and each book seems a bit better.
First there is more of an actual romance in this book which was something I know many people wanted, she is getting a wee bit more powerful but no magic godlike powers or anything and we are getting to actually like Ashworth who we thought originally was going to be a horrible pain in the rear.
We actually have 2 mysteries on our hands with this book and you get deeply involved in both of them and their outcome. I can hardly wait for the next book since we are expecting a new witch and I keep hoping it is not a member of her family (I am still a bit vague on her past, maybe I need to reread portions of previous books but I don't think so).
The plot of this book comes down to a murder mystery that must be solved and a really bad dark magic user who may be too powerful, I kind of like the fact that our heroine has to limp away from many battles and does not show up untouched.
I am going to give this one a 4.5 Stars and round it up since it was very entertaining but I felt a few pages were just filler but those were rare.
I’m enjoying this series more and more with each book and I’m quite sad that I only have one left to read after this one. I think this one may be my favourite out of the series yet, the storyline is just so gripping and action packed! I couldn’t stop turning the pages because I just needed to know what would happen next. I’ve come to really enjoy this cast of characters, they’re each so different and I love how they all come together to form a whole. I’m looking forward to reading the final book and seeing how it plays out in the end!
This is third in a series and, like many UF series, each builds on the other in setting, relationships, and an overarching plot. Definitely read these in order, but since this is an outstanding series, that's a bonus, not a detriment.
This is another extremely strong contribution to the series and I loved it from start to finish. I'm so glad for the relationship progression with Aiden and Lizzie (it happens early so not a spoiler) finally coming together (er, biblically). But I also thought the power/threat progression worked out well and the pace was spanking (in a good way). Indeed, I have no complaints and will just wrap by saying that if you've read the other two, this will be pretty much what you expect without being boring or predictable.
A note about Steamy: The Aiden/Lizzie relationship finally culminates and we see that as an explicit sex scene. I get the sense that it's the relationship that matters to the author (as opposed to the sexy times), largely because we only get the one full scene and then lead-up and summary of others. So this is on the low side of my steam tolerance, but I think that's very fitting for the story being told.
Lizzie Grace is KA in one of her best dresses: UF, character-driven, centered on a woman that's magical but not a superhero.
I did like book three, but I'm disappointed by the lack of clarity on her past. At this point I need to be more involved in her backstory, otherwise her panic and fear are starting to grow weaker by the minute. We know next to nothing about her 'abuse'. We only know her family is responsible, maybe as payback for her failure to defend her sister(?). We now know there's a contract involved she was compelled to sign at 16. It's really thin at book three. That said, give me the next book :)
I really love this series. And you know why? Because whenever Lizzie has to go running off into the night to chase evil, she tells somebody where she's going and what she's doing; she tries not to go into an unknown situation alone; she always brings protection and charms with her; she always tells somebody when she has a bad feeling; and she starts preparing a spell before the confrontation. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
Oh, but if we don't learn about Lizzie and Belle's past in the next book, there's gonna be hell to pay. The mystery has gone on long enough.
I can’t decide whether to round the stars up or down on this one. It truly is a fabulous book and series for anyone who loves urban fantasy that holds warmth and love right along with all the beastie killing.
I guess I rounded down only because I can’t quite decide what I think about Aiden and his relationship with Lizzie. I LOVE that they are finally together (yes, “it” happened). And, although they seem to be a great couple, it feels like the relationship is all work and sex centered. There’s the whole “we can never be a long term thing because you’re not a werewolf” fact that hangs over them like a rain cloud even as they seem so happy together. And Aiden never really puts himself out to explore or try to make it more than a fun fling. In some stories that wouldn’t be a problem but in this one, Lizzie has been not good enough her entire life, so to be in a relationship where she really and deeply cares about a man but he only wants her for now is sad.
BUT… That is also why ya gotta give Ms. Arthur props. She writes characters so well that a reader loves them like family and the emotions are just as real!
*At this point, I am wondering why the local population aren’t noticing the vast number of dead people piling up around that reservation, though… *
There's always a big bad and Lizzie and Belle learn more about themselves. Lizzie finally has some time with Aidan. But not much. It was fun and interesting but more of the same. I wonder when we will learn more about Lizzie's history and family.
Too much repetition, chemistry between MCs kinda understated and everyone just talks too much. I really like the plot-line and wish it could have been more exciting but I'm getting a lukewarm vibe. 😕😕😕
Our wolf shifter and head ranger Adian and Lizzie Grace with her familiar Belle are once again fighting evil in Castle Rock.
The wellspring of wild magic is attracting all sorts of evil and without a reservation witch Lizzie will merd to step up. Although she is 'underpowered' she always pulls through.
Really like the way Lizzie is smart, not a superhero, has lots of friends who help her, tells people what is happening, and where she is going & would they like to come along. Lots of action of the witch & woman kind in this one.
Really, really, need to know what her & Belle's history is. Hope its revealed in the next one.
I'm not sure why, but I had a hard time concentrating while reading this one. My mind wandering in the middle of a big action scene, it was odd. At first I thought it was me, but I sat down to read this 3 different times and it happened during all of them.
What I did like about this one is that Lizzie and Belle seem to fit in more, become more a part of the community, something they fought for in staying there and building up their business. I also like how both women and more comfortable with the witch assigned to watch over things. It was iffy with the last book, but I think they got a big point across during this book. It also didn't hurt that at every turn they were there to help things out and save the day.
Lizzie's relationship with Aiden finally crosses the line in a good way. He often is right there as they fight the bad guy, helping pick up the pieces.
With the help Lizzie got at the end it will be interesting to see where her magic goes from here.
This was my least favorite book in the series so far, not because it was bad, but it lacked progress. The mystery took over the story. There wasn't time for relationships or characters to evolve. Liz and Aiden were together, but their insecurities were highly prevalent, to the point that it was almost annoying. Maybe it's just me but I find her friendship with Belle weird. They're way too friendly and accommodating of each other's needs. Since their magical bond allows them to speak telepathically, sometimes they'll have friendly, light-hearted conversations at highly unusual times. Things between the two of them might make more sense if more about their background were ever revealed. I'd love to know more about how their relationship developed. I was hoping that something would be revealed since a new witch was coming from Canberra, but it was not. The best thing about this book was Ashworth. He was the one character I learned more about. I hope he sticks around for a while.
Third in the Lizzie Grace paranormal fantasy mystery series and revolving around two witches, partners, and companions.
My Take At last! A real date with Aiden!! And we finally get the answer to that eviction question posed in Hell's Bell, 2. Phew. Seems Lizzie and Belle have a lot of friends, lol.
We finally know why Lizzie is on the run from her family. And she's terrified that the documents she was forced to sign will hold up in court. From the sound of her parents...she's right to be afraid.
Hmmm, it's a good reminder that help should always be appreciated in some way. And Lizzie has some work to do here. Okay, Lizzie does appreciate the help Katie gives her...probably because it's so unusual! AND touches on Aiden. It's a good opportunity for her character arc, growth-wise.
It's all first person protagonist point-of-view from Lizzie's perspective, and she's evolving. Those teasing comments Arthur makes about Lizzie's mother almost dying the one time she tried to redirect wild magic definitely encourage that line of thought. It's all in the eyes, and you can follow her progress from Hell's Bell when her green eyes were rimmed in silver...now they are silver with the wild magic pulsing within her. Makes you wonder just how powerful Lizzie will be by the time the wild magic is done with her!
Conflicts, conflicts... It's bad enough that werewolves are being skinned alive, but there's that werewolf custom at Christmas. And Lizzie is terrified that Aiden will get caught up with another woman. Those heretic witches from blueblood families who are stronger than Lizzie. Ashworth's unrelenting curiosity about Lizzie's background — and that hair of hers does not help.
Well that's fun, lol, all those lust potions that spilled all over them. Another fun note, okay, so it's more of a practical one are those meetings Aiden and Jack hold to share ideas and build a network...that has led to a serious downturn in crime. Too bad this "concept" doesn't seem to work amongst all law enforcement. Just think how many crimes would be solved, ahem.
Lizzie and Belle are strong women in a town of strong people, rolling with the punches, and always stepping up to help whatever their doubts. In many ways, the elders have accepted them too easily, Aiden included. I'd've liked to see more stress and strain before they're appreciated. Them brownies must be really good!
It incorporates a brisk pace (to fit it all in) in this action-packed tale, and the characters add quite a bit to it. They're primarily compassionate and supportive. Well, except for the bad guys who contribute to our own perception of the witches. Nice way to do away with info dumps!
The Story Christmas is a time for newcomers and getting to...know...them. This custom only adds to Lizzie's stress, as the evidence mounts up that the new evil in town is determined to claim the wild magic...and the reservation for his own.
With that body count rising of skinned werewolves, who knows if there will be any left.
The Characters Lizzie Grace is a witch with a gift for psychometry and precognition whose being is bonding with the wild magic. Isabelle "Belle" Kent is her best friend and a fellow witch, as well as her familiar. Her gifts involve talking with spirit guides and she's highly telepathic. Both women are in hiding.
Lizzie's parents are among the most powerful. Julius is Lizzie's brother. Ava is Belle's mom; Nellie was Belle's grandmother.
Castle Rock, Australia, is... ...the capitol of the Faelan Werewolf Reservation, one of seven in Australia.
The Psychic Café is... ...the restaurant Lizzie and Belle opened in Castle Rock. Penny is their middle-aged waitress. Frank is the dishwasher. Mike is the cook. Mrs Potts is one of their regulars and founder of the gossip brigade. Henry is her missing, womanizing husband. Freddie is the man who drives Mrs Potts where she wants to go. Gina is another regular and part of the gossip brigade. Karla is supposedly one of the brigade and one of Mrs Potts' friends. Millie is Henry's daughter from an affair some thirty-five years ago.
The Rangers are... ...the reservation law enforcement and include Aiden O'Connor as the head ranger — he's rather leery of Belle's telepathic abilities, and as the oldest son, heir to his alpha father. The other seven rangers include Mac, Tala Sinclair who is second-in-command, Byron, Jaz (Levi Marin is her barista husband), and Duke. Ciara O'Connor is Aiden's sister and the coroner. Maggie is their receptionist and a ranger-in-training.
Jenny Wright had been the previous head ranger. Senior Detective Jack Byrnes is a Bendigo cop. Besides Aiden, Ciara, and Katie, The eight O'Connor siblings include Michael.
Zak Marin is a bartender at Émigré, a handyman, and is/was dating Belle. That boy made a bad decision.Raphael Beaumont is visiting a sister. Jamison O'Connor was barely twenty. Angus Sinclair had been a good friend of Aiden's father. Kenny Sinclair and Jeni Marin are yet more victims.
A Pot of Magic, Tea and Tinctures, the Tea Cauldron, and the Black Samovar in Ballan (that's run by Francesca Waverley) are shops that sell paraphernalia used by low-powered witches. Joseph Hardcourt is a manager at the Randley hotel. Lucy Allan runs the A-Line Accommodation Park campground where Charles Randall and the Browning brothers — Shaun, Bryan (a car nut), and Hale — have been staying.
Émigré is... ...a popular alien-themed nightclub owned by an ancient vampire, Maelle Defour.
The wild magic arises... ...from wellsprings and must be protected by a witch to ensure it doesn't attract evil. This reservation has two wellsprings of wild magic. and Ira Ashworth is the RWA witch who has been temporarily assigned to protect it. He's also too curious about Lizzie and Belle.Eli is Ashworth’s partner, a retired RWA witch, who comes to help Ira after he's wounded.
The newest wellspring is protected by Gabe, the previous reservation witch, and the soul of his werewolf wife, Katie, Aiden's sister. Anna Kang, an RWA witch, is on the mend (Blood Kissed, 1). Frederick Ashworth is supposed to be the new reservation witch.
The Witches There are six witch bloodlines: three are bluebloods — Marlowes, Kangs, and Ashworths — and three are "commoners" — Sarrs, Fitzgeralds, and Waverleys. Lizzie is from the Marlowe line while Belle is a typical Sarr witch. A vetted witch has gone through the accreditation process, which aligns them to a major or minor house. An unvetted witch is usually a half-breed who has not undergone accreditation or registration. For a dark witch to become a master, they must defeat their master. There's a claim that dark magic prematurely ages the user.
The High Witch Council is the governing body for witches while the Regional Witch Association (RWA) handles regional issues. The Heretic Investigations Center (HIC) hunts down rogues. Chester Ashworth, a.k.a., Raymond Chester, is one of them, a rogue witch hunter, but not related to Ira.
Jonathan Ashworth went rogue thirty-five years ago. Frankel Kang is number one on the heretic hit list. George Sarr has also turned traitor. Trent Price is an assassin. Abby Jones had been his contact.
Werewolves are a branch of humanity that evolved specific DNA adaptations. All werewolf reservations participate in the exchange program to keep the bloodlines vibrant.
The Cover and Title The cover is a background of deep purples with a light gray sky behind the red-haired Lizzie kneeling and concentrating on a bright yellow and orange ball of energy focused between her hands. Aiden, as a wolf, stands behind her in profile, guarding. The silhouettes of trees framing them adds to the spooky atmosphere. The author's name is in white at the top. The title is white and large at the bottom at Lizzie's ankles. The series information is in a colonial blue below the title.
The title refers to those skinned werewolves, the Hunter Hunted in a nasty reverse.
A compelling newest book in Lizzie Grace series! Another threat to the wild magic source as well as a team of hunter killing werewolves for their pelt. I enjoyed Lizzie teaming up with Ashworth more in this book. I loved that Lizzie and Aiden got their sexy times despite the murders that happened around them.
I sort of feel like Belle's pushed into the background a little bit in this book though, because Lizzie working more with Ashworth and at one time with Eli (Ashworth's partner) who comes because Ashworth is hurt. That made me pout in dissatisfaction because Lizzie and Belle's 'sisterhood' bond is one of the things I love the most about this series.
. I cannot wait for the next book. AND I hope that Ashworth and Eli decide to settle down at the reservation instead of going back to the city.
Hunter Hunted by Keri Arthur is another winner! I love how Arthur drives her characters and leads us on an intriguing mystery. With each book in the Lizzie Grace series Arthur unveils just a tad bit more to surprise and keep us guessing. Lizzie and Bell are the best duo! Such a wonderful friendship gives this story depth and has us on pins and needles as we try to decipher their secrets. This would not be a Keri Arthur special if we didn't have a sexy wolf in the mix. Aiden adds just the right touch of sexy and stimuli readers need and want. If you love a great tale of witches, wolves, and plenty of surprises then this series and book are for you. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
Lizzie Grace, under powered witch, and her familiar, Belle, run a fabulous cafe on a werewolf reservation in Victoria. Somehow, the impossible has happened and Lizzie has been good into the wild spirits on the reservation. This has not gone unnoticed which is a problem for two witches who are trying to fly under the radar.
When a dark entity tries to get control of the wild spirits, they help Lizzie and her hunky boyfriend, Aiden the head ranger, fight back. As witches and werewolves die around them , Lizzie and Belle may not survive long enough to worry about being found but their abusers.
I Love Keri Arthur's work and I particularly enjoy this series, partly because it is recognisably set in Australia. I enjoy her characters and their banter plus the plot moves along at pace and becomes quite suspenseful.
I love this book. Absolutely fantastic, perfect, like catching up with your most fascinating friend. Lizzie and Belle are wonderful, I love Aiden, it's like all the characters combine and you just want to stay with them. I love most of Keri Arthur's books, I'm even hoping for another Harri book at some point. I got into them with the Riley Henson books. But I now think I might enjoy the Lizzie Grace books even more. High praise from me!
Description: Christmas is fast approaching, and Lizzie Grace and her witch familiar, Belle Kent, are hoping it’s going to be a quiet one.
My Thoughts: Hunter Hunted was just as fun as the previous two books. The mystery was good and the relationships were just as fun. :) I still highly recommend this series. :)
Arthur creates a double mystery in this latest installment of Lizzie's adventures. Not only does she become wrapped up in the case of werewolves being hunted and skinned, but there's also a magic dark blood magic that's brewing around the reservation and coming to threaten her new home.
I did find both of the cases interesting, but it almost seemed as though we really needed just one. While the wolf hunters brought some extra action and intrigue to the plot, I'm not sure yet where it matters too much in the overall scheme of things. Instead, the blood magic case is where we're seeing real ripples in Lizzie's understanding of who she is/what she's capable of, her connection to the wild magic, and also the ever-looming threat of someone from her family discovering her and Belle.
I'm really loving Ira (Ashworth) the more page time that he gets. Like Lizzie, there's just something about the cantankerous man that just makes me want to give him a hug. I think he's a lot of fun, to be honest, and I'm glad that he's there. With the way he reminds Lizzie of her grandfather and his obvious investment in her safety/getting to know her and Belle more, I think that he could be a great mentor for her if only she'd just let him in.
Now that I'm getting to trust Ira more, there's still trouble on the horizon. With ANOTHER new witch coming in to hopefully fill the reservation's opening, the question still stands- will Lizzie and Belle stay safe? I really hoped to see a bit more progress here, to be honest. With all of the drama and tension about new witches coming in, it felt like a little bit of a letdown when each incoming witch appeared to be no threat to them. It's not that I WANT their lives to be miserable, I just wonder how long we'll stew over the drama of their hiding before something comes to a head with it.
Overall, I DID enjoy the book, but I was disappointed that we didn't see more to do with Lizzie and Belle's hidden past.
The first two books in this series did their job well and I could hardly wait to get my hands on part three. I am greatly enjoying exploring this world and learning more about it. I like that Lizzy isn’t the most powerful person in the town, that she often gets her ass handed to her and then has to limp to the next encounter. It’s more realistic.
I enjoyed the development of the relationships, both between Lizzy and Alden, and between Lizzy and the other witches in town. I’m worried that some of them may leave with the expected arrival of a new witch in the fourth book, but we’ll see how that develops.
There are two mysteries here. One is fully developed and flushed out. The other is brought to a satisfactory close, but I did feel like the motivations of the bad guys could have been explored in more detail (said motivations are discussed by the characters but it’s all speculation).
I’m certainly looking forward to the release of the fourth book.
4 stars! Editing is thankfully getting better which makes a huge difference. But also the story is getting so much more detailed. In this one there are wolves being skinned alive, dark blood magic witches, and a growing body count. We also finally get Aiden and Lizzie getting the chance to take their relationship to the next stage which is good for everyone involved. I love that Lizzie is a smart heroine. She tells people where she is going, goes in as prepared as can be and tries to avoid danger even though the wild magic wont let her. The wild magic has connected to her in a way nobody has seen before and I am intrigued what that will lead to in the future. It obviously increases her power but will there be fallout from all her using of it? Belle is lovely as always, I appreciate her humour and her confidence in herself. She wont take second choice from a partner and I'm glad about that. I do hope the next book gets us more of Belle and Lizzie's backstory though. These teases of the mystery need something more concrete for moving the story forward.
In this third installment, Lizzie is still dealing with her bond to the wild magic. Someone is hunting the wolves, and trying to take over the wellspring. New witches are headed their way, which puts.her and Belles futures in jeopardy.
I rally enjoyed this installment of the Lizzie Grace series. I will admit that Lizzie's focus on Aiden and other women got old, but knowing this author, it will come into play later. This novel also cemented the fact that Ash worth is probably my favorite secondary character in this series.
