Chosen to be the recipient of a great gift, Glenn Hitch receives a title pointing to the destiny all mankind was originally purposed for. Glenn’s new abilities include the same gift granted to Elisha’s servant in answer to the prophet’s the ability to see the true reality of the war he was engaged in. The struggle not with flesh and blood, as so many would readily assume, but instead with the spiritual forces that feed on and drive much of the conflict in this life. Glenn must learn to balance the demands of love and the requirements of service that flow from these new abilities. Glenn knows what many there really are angels and demons, and both are involved in people’s lives and decisions. By serving others who doubt that truth, Glenn searches for the answer to the questions that haunt him the Why was I chosen, and what does it mean to be chosen?
Chosen by Charles De Andrade captured my attention from page one. I normally do not read and enjoy books about wars, but this was not just a war story. It is so much more. Glenn Hitch was one of the chosen by God to save people in various ways even though he is unaware of this throughout most of the novel. War is always hell, but this is also a battle between spiritual good and evil. Hitch is caught in the middle not only fighting the enemy troops in Vietnam but also demons who try to destroy him and people around him. He suffers severe bodily injuries but survives with the help of a talented, creative doctor and nursing staff and the angels that surround and protect him.
The novel is also a search for self-truth. Hitch strives to discover his real purpose in life as many of us readers do. The angels try to show him the way. The well-developed and interesting characters include good and bad people and a few who fall somewhere in between. The plot moves quickly and smoothly without the many gruesome details some modern war/crime stories seem to include today. As a reader who finds those unpleasant, I appreciate the author showing just enough to show the horrors of war without going to extremes.
Finally, in my opinion, no story is complete without a little romance. His relationship with Vietnamese nun and nurse Mylinh reveals the tender, loving side of Hitch. It is a needed break from the hate and violence that surrounds them. Their love story is genuine but sadly faces complications.
Overall, I highly recommend this novel. I want to read the next book in the series. Charles De Andrade is a gifted writer.
This is the second book I have read by author Charles De Andrade, This Christian fictional story primarily takes place in the late 1960s and early 1970s, during the Vietnam the war. In this book, the first in the Steward Series, the author introduces the reader to the principal character, a member of the armed forces who possesses the biblical gifts of wisdom and discernment. While actively involved in armed combat, he also knows that the veritable war being waged is spiritual and not just physical. Weaving a wonderful love story into the conflict adds to the tension and makes the book hard to put down. I was aware of spiritual warfare before reading Chosen, but this story sparked my awareness and enhanced my discernment and wisdom of the battle taking place in heavenly realms. As an addition to biblical studies, Chosen makes an excellent personalization of the subject. I enjoyed this well-written book and am becoming a Charles De Andrade fan, eager to read the next book in the series.
This book, a real page-turner, is set in Viet Nam during wartime. As a high-schooler during the late 1960s, I remember when some of my classmates were drafted and left to fight in Viet Nam. Not all of them came back. Some came back , but with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. I never really understood what they went through, so I was intrigued (and sometimes horrified) to read the very realistic depictions of war's atrocities in the book. It's a story of the conflict between the spiritual forces of good and evil, and how they shape outcomes, both in individuals and between warring countries. There was also a love story realistically interwoven into its pages, which helped introduce some lightness and joy into the story.
Charles de Andrade’s novel “Chosen” was an engaging read from the very first chapter. The book discusses the very real existence of angels and demons in this world and the impacts that God’s anointed followers have in battling against demonic evil in events set during the Vietnam war. I look forward to reading the next book in the Stewardship Series. Thank you for your inspiring story of the power of God’s grace and power in this world Charles.
Part Tom Clancy, part Frank Peretti, Charles de Andrade blends military intrigue with the unseen battle that goes on all around us. There have been few books that I have not been able to put down. This is one of them, and I suspect the rest of the series will be the same.
