Nell lived all her life in the Townsend Orphan Home and at thirteen; she faced a difficult decision. Move to yet another Orphan home, one that had a poor reputation, or set out on her own with all the supplies she could gather before the day the home closed for good. Two of the younger children that she befriended decided that if Nell was not going to the new home, neither would they. After barely escaping on the last day, the threesome started their new life with a mule, cow, and wagon full of supplies. The three orphaned children became a family as they traveled west looking for someplace to call home. During their journey, they met a man that continued to show up when they needed moral support. Uncle Ned, as they called him, became their biggest encouragement, especially when Nell learned that Lonny and Frieda had a real uncle that had been looking for them. After losing her two children, Uncle Ned was determined to build a real house for Nell, not the stable turned house they had been living in after moving from the old sod house. Uncle Ned arranged the trade of Nell’s standing hardwood trees for buildable wood. After her house was finished, Uncle Ned continued on his travels leaving Nell to settle into single living. Bert Stein was the only son of the saw-mill owner in town and led the crew that continued to cut old hardwood trees from Nell’s land. Being tongue-tied around women, Bert appreciated Nell from afar until his mother sent him to Nell’s ranch with the puppy she promised. That was the beginning of their transformation, and took them places they did not expect.
After living in an orphanage for most of her life, Nell learned it was closing and children were being moved to other facilities. Nell began making plans for her move. She was older than the other children a decided to go out on her own. She saved items that were being discarded and hid her finds in the woods behind the orphanage. Two little girls noticed and asked to join her. Nell and the two girls formed a family -like unit and stayed together until the uncle of the younger girls came and gave them a place to live.
Nell accomplished so much. She homesteaded on plots of land that had been abandoned by adult homesteaders. She made improvements on the land and on the dwellings on the land. She had a vision for the future. And then Nell married the man of her dreams.
Nell, an orphan until she was thirteen when the orphanage closed and she and two other orphans took off for out west. They had many adventures and when Uncle Ned meets up with them he seems to know just what they need. Over the years he appears just when Nell is in most need of him. Uncle Ned helps them build a house on the land so they don't have to live in the sod house or converted stable. After her husband, Bert is killed in an accident, Nell finds out she is going to have Bert's baby. Years later she marries again. Love story that keep the interest high enough that you don't want the story to end.
As you read the story of Nell's life you will surely think the tell is too fast paced to include everything. As you continue to grow into the story you might think the story is too slow. The pace was just right and allowed excellent character development. The story is almost a "Little House on the Prairie " mixed with "Bonanza"but in reality it stands on its own. I appreciate the fact that no violence, no graphic sex andno foul language was necessay to tell a wonderful story
This story is yet another great one from An Amazing Author Jean L. Kuhnke. I really love her stories because she doesn’t just tell you a story of kind that ends when they either fall in Love or get married, no this Author takes it further and goes into more detail, explaining what is going on and the experience’s the characters are going through. You want a great read.... you got it here. My new favorite Author.......
As always I come away with deep thoughts and new insights of praising the One who created the universe with a spoken word. I love everything Ms. Kuhnke authors. She is a amazing storyteller. I love how she weaves our Heavenly Father into every story. She has wonderful characters that feel as if I’m there walking with them through their trials and praises. Another blessing to read and emerce into her stories.
Three orphans strike out on their own when their orphanage closes and go West. Along the way they meet Uncle Ned. The two children Nell takes West with her go to live with their uncle and aunt. Nell falls in love, marries and suddenly becomes a widow. She has twin boys after the death of her husband and decides she will never love another man. That changes!
Every time I find a novel by Jean Kuhnke, I know it will be engrossing. This story is rich in life lessons. The principle character is Nell and as the story progresses from age thirteen, you can feel Nell's joys and sorrows while rooting for her accomplishments. Excellent book.
Orphaned Again by Jean L. Kuhnke. I loved the characters and the storyline of this book. It was emotional at times and I shed a few tears with the heroine, but it was filled with happiness and a sweet ending.
This story made me cry and laugh and cry some more. I loved the characters from page one to the end. I would love to be like Mrs. Timken. Uncle Ned is a mystery. Wonderful strong heroine. Easy to read.
I loved this story and didn't want it to end. It is the story of three children in an Orphan home who leave and their remarkable journey to a final home and their adventures getting there!
I like this author for the comfortable stories. This one is not comfortable. But it is more interesting, and it is a lovely story. There is a tragic element, but it is meaningful.
