Shadow of the Corsairs

The Past Casts a Shadow Over a Second Chance For Love….

Palermo, 1810

Morwena Gambino is struggling to keep her family’s business going against mounting troubles. Her widowed father, once shrewd, is now increasingly forgetful, letting debts mount and disavowing his sons. Morwena runs the shop behind his back, forced to hide her enterprise not only from her father but also her bitter older brother.

In Tunisia, Tewodros “Jonathan” Afua is struggling to stay alive. Once an Ethiopian prince, he is a captive of the corsairs who slaughtered his wife and children. When a US naval bombardment provides an opening for escape, Jonathan falls in with a seemingly deranged English pirate. Aboard Kit Hardacre’s rundown ship with its ragtag crew, Jonathan learns the real reason he was taken by slavers.

Reluctantly joining Hardacre’s crew, he meets Morwena in Palermo. The fiery young Sicilian woman is the opposite of his quiet reserve, but he is attracted to her despite mourning for his late wife. As he and Morwena grow closer, it emerges that they have something in common – secret betrayal by those close to them – and they must count what they’re willing to risk for a future together.

Johnathon Afua can now look for the answers of who killed his family as he is now free!
With new friends that are pirates and give the ability to lead life as the free man he was before.
But he can won't return to his home Ethiopia. He is now a member of a very elite group of men who follow a man blindly yet trust with their lives, who lives on the edge. Kit, madman or genius along with Elias who is more priest or man of God depending on your religion.
Sicily in the early 1800s is not an easy place to be a business woman, as  we find the heroine of this book. Women don't run businesses but with a father that has disowned both of his sons and is becoming senile lets his daughter run the family business and it flourishes.
Rowena goes into business with Johnathon and his 2 new best friends.
This book is full of adventure and intrigue that will keep you on the edge of your seat nor will you want
to put it down. Tension and danger become a daily way of living both on land and sea depending who you are at any given day.
Exciting......yes but it makes one think on the way they live and believe as they work through all the barricades they must face.
Great read and to see how Rowena and Johnathon weave through them you will want to read!

If you’ve read the first two books in this series you’ll know the characters and the general locations etc.
If you haven’t, WHY NOT !
This is one of those special series that even when you finish it you can’t forget .
The people and place depicted in this book ,are in your memory for a long time after turning the final page, in my opinion thats good , because it’s been one of the best I’ve ever read .
This is set prior to the first book , it’s Jonathan and Morwena’s story , and it’s a rollercoaster of feelings and hard to deal with situations.
With areas of heartbreak and emotions that tear you up , to the joy of love and second chances , this is just as good as the other books .
The characters of Kit, genius or madman , and of Elias make welcome appearances too and as always they are awesome.
The author has surpassed herself with this one and I can honestly say I wish I could give it more than 5 stars , it deserves far more .
I received an advanced copy of this book and chose to submit a review

Palermo 1810

Morwena Gambino is doing everything she possibly can to keep her family's business a float, but she's having a very hard time. Her widowed father is having problems with his memory at times forgetting who she is, letting the debts pile up, and disowning his two sons. Morwena runs the shop behind his back however she is forced to hide this fact not only from her father, but her older brother as well.

In Tunisia, Tewodrows Jonathan Afua is struggling to stay alive. Once an Ethiopian prince, he is now a captive of the corsairs who slaughtered his wife and children. When a US naval bombardment offers a chance to escape, he takes it falling in with a seemingly deranged English pirate named Kit Hardacre. Once aboard Kit's run down ship with its ragtag crew, Jonathan learns the real reason he was taken by slavers.

After reluctantly joining Kit's crew Jonathan meets Morwena in Palermo. The fiery young Sicillian woman is the total opposite of his quiet reserve, but he is attracted to her despite mourning for his late wife. As he and Morwena grow closer they find something in common and that is the secret betrayal by those close to them. Now they must figure out what they are willing to risk for a future together and if it's worth it.

Simply put this book is brilliant. Elizabeth Ellen Carter is such a talented author. I have not read the first two books in the series, but you can count on the fact that I will be. What an incredible read. If I could give this book unlimited stars I would.

This is a story that will grab your interest from the first page and not let go until the end. Set mainly in 1810 Palermo, the author takes you through an unforgettable time when life was unpredictable. In Tunisia, Jonathan Afua had been captured and held by the corsairs in a terrible prison. They had killed his wife and children and taken him prisoner although he never understood the reason. An unexpected attack nearby left him able to escape with a crew of pirates run by an Englishman, Kit Hardacre. He digs to learn about the fate of his family and why he was left to live.
When they arrive in Palermo, he meets Morwena Gambino, who has problems of her own trying to keep her family business alive since her father is not mentally able. There are so many twist and turns to this wonderful story that has such strong emotions and tugs at your heart. Jonathan and Morwena are drawn together through her business but there is danger and conflict that they have to work through.
Although part of a series, this book can be read as a standalone. But you will want to read each story after you finish this one because it is truly amazing!!

Two stars are for misrepresentation.... Don’t call something a “Romance” when it’s not!

Honestly I feel lied to,and cheated, I seen cartoons and and flipped around and saw stuff aimed at kids on Nickelodeon that seemed more romantic than this ....
Between the sexy cover and the fact that this is sorely misplaced in the “romance ” category ,I assumed ( unfortunately) that that’s hat this book was....
A. Romance.....
But guess what?
To my announce and chagrin, that’s Not. At. All! What this is....
This I about a man hurt and betrayed by others close to him who then loses the love of his life, who is the rescued by two seeming decent but very annoying men ( whom he spends the majority of the story with) finds a new love along the way but is too caught up in morning what was and revenging his past that he pushes that “new love” away time and time again ,til the very last chapter of the book.....

Honestly, Jonathan might have been a good and r noble man but honestly I found him selfish and annoying ....
Now letting go of his wife and first love be a near,y impossible thing to do I’m sure, especially the brutal way she was ripped away from him and never getting a proper goodbye or closure but.... but the push/pull he did w/Morwena was just wrong and selfish....
He’d pull her close and kiss her and tell her he loved her, only to push her away time and time again and tell her he was still in love his DEAD ( not trying to be rude but if their dead your NOT being unfaithful !) (but to pull someone to you and turn around and push them away is being cruel) ,honestly if he really cared for her he’d have stayed away til he had him own mind figured out...
No,that cover is a complete and utter lie , that cover looks passionate and sexy, two ppl in a lovers embrace but you don’t get that...
No truly,as frustrating as a “clean romance” is ,if it truly was a romance I could have still enjoyed it ,if that had been what I got...
Sure I didn’t enjoy the only time at 89% of the book where it looked like maybe, just maybe sex would be had when it seemed the h was giving herself to Jonathan ( who was going away to find,it get his revenge) but he barely “allowed” her to kiss him when it stopped and in next chapter started w/our dear dear Jon on the ship off get his revenge....
What makes me soo angry and annoyed is I thought I was getting a sexy historical “romance” story w/a rather unusual spin of a black man and a white woman and what I got was almost to ships 🚢 occasionally crossing each other‘s path more consumed with their own lives and drama than each other...
Wen with her evil brother and her ailing father and their business and Jon consumed with grief and bitterness and the need for vengeance and revenge that though he may “claim” to love Morwena ?
Unlike for her, she always seems to be an after thought for him...
As just a story this book might deserve 4 stars ⭐️ but as a “romance” ? Not many at all...
The H and h don’t spent all that much time together, except unless it’s helping Wen w/her business, save her from her evil brother or to yet again pull her n for a kiss just to call her by his dead wife name or do something else to remind her how loved or not she’s still low on the list of ppl in his heart....
Wen goes through her days grieving the love she desperately wants from Jon and as usual , in life and books all too often puts most of the effort into hanging on to the one she wants ...
I cane to almost dislike Jon on how her never was willing to completely leave Wen’s like, always there on periphery like a lingering smell or dream....
Finally at the end of the very last chapter after she’s gone to him Yet again,Jon finally asks her to marry him, but then tells her he of course doesn’t want to give up his life at sea ,then it’s the epilogue and it’s all about those idiots on that ship starting a lead up to the previous two books ...
A book can be achingly clean and still be a heart felt romance,bu not this Wen was never ever a priority to Jon, Jon’s life at sea and his past was always his true priority ..
I don’t know what this was,but calling it a romance just isn’t honest ....

In Bagrada, Tunisia in October 1810 Jonathan Afua is shackled in prison hearing loud booms. Another prisoner and friend to Jonathan advise him if he gets a chance to escape to run away. Jonathan tells his friend he won’t leave without him but he is killed while Jonathan hears two men that decide to save him asking Jonathan to join them. Who are the two men but pirates and Jonathan is apprehensive of them. Still he decides to join them temporarily to find the one man that enslaved him and killed his family. Jonathan is out for revenge but when he meets the pretty shopkeeper’s daughter Morwena Jonathan is scared of his attraction to her especially since he still is in love with his dead wife. Things aren’t as smooth for the two as it should be while Jonathan continues to search for the man Morwena must deal with her family issues. Will these two ever find happiness with each other or will Jonathan’s need for revenge and Morwena’s family issues ruin everything?
This is the third book in the heart of the corsairs series by Ms. Elizabeth Ellen Carter and still doesn’t lack in the action, adventure, suspense or romance which the book is teeming with. The beginning is a little bit slow which kind of eases you into the story but really picks up after the main characters meet. Also with the slow start the book can be read as a stand-alone or even read first before the first book which is a nice refreshing change to see especially since we learn the beginning of how the hero meets the pirates and his wife.
Jonathan is an amazing hero he might be reserved and quiet but really has quite a bit of heart. He loves deeply and feels for people even ones he doesn’t claim to like. Jonathan also seems to be the one character with a lot of sense and I wondered too why everyone followed Kit. I couldn’t help but cheer for Jonathan and want him to find his happiness. Morwena was really my favorite character and in a sense I couldn’t help but have a little girl crush on her. She’s spirited, feisty, smart and independent really what’s not to like? Morwena seems to be the fire to Jonathan’s ice but really they make a good couple. I would like to read more about the crew and their adventures if any. I will definitely read more of Ms. Carter’s stories about pirates or anything else!

Jonathan is a member of Ethiopian royalty, taken by slavers into captivity. While being held in chains, he is inadvertently rescued by a group of “pirates “ who have his captors in sight as a target for revenge. Not knowing if he has a home to which to return, Jonathan becomes a reluctant member of their crew if only to avenge the deaths of his family members.
While on one of their usual stops, the ships crew make port in Palermo, a small Italian town where Morwena lives with her ailing father, a shopkeeper. She has taken over the actual running of the shop, and she has a head for business and a body that Jonathan can’t help but notice. As the two are drawn together through business, their attraction and understanding of each other grows. They are drawn into a familial conflict that involves local criminals and danger for all of them, which lends an intensity to the plot. As in the previous books in the series, the cast of colorful characters are vastly entertaining too.
This book was sooo good I could not put it down! I have read each book in this series and all are very good, but this is the perfect conclusion to this set of tales. I highly recommend this to readers of historical romance who enjoy a wild ride both on the sea and on land!

I could not put this book down till finished, Elizabeth Ellen Carter drew me in to this sad, and intense time in history when men made slaves of their fellow man, and families where torn apart forever. Jonathan Afua was such a man A Prince of Ethiopia, happy with a wife and three little daughters he adored till he was betrayed. His family murdered, he finds himself captured and kept in chains the grief and rage is all that keeps him strong. Then freedom comes in the form of Captain Kit Hardacre and his crew, Jonathan soon finds himself in Palermo Sicily. Morwena Cambino Is running the family business, her father is frail and getting forgetful, he has turned her two brothers from the house disowning them, but she is a strong person with a great head for business. As the story unfolds she meets Jonathan and they both feel the attraction that soon turns to love. The story is full of twists and turns and is intense at times, but Jonathan and Morwena weave through what is happening to them to find their happy ever after. I highly recommend this book and now I must get the first two books in the series, so glad I discovered this author.

Johnathon Afua is looking for answers about who killed his family and had him enslaved. His new friends are pirates who seem to be looking for the same people. His memories are making it very difficult to leave the past behind and take the new life that is waiting for him. Our hero is a wealthy man in his home country of Ethiopia, but that is not a place he can face yet.
Morwena Gambino is working hard to keep her father's business running. Her brothers have been forbidden to come home but her father is not well. Our heroine is a clever, organized woman, but Sicily in the early 1800s is not an easy place to be a business woman.
This book is part of a series, you can easily read it alone but if like me you have read the others you will meet some great old friends. There is a lot of adventure in this nice long book. Plenty of time to really get into our character's lives. Family tensions and danger are faced all the time.
A very exciting story.

This book is the meshing of two soulmates that never should have or fallen in love with each other. We were introduced to Jonathan & Morwena in the prior 2 books in the series & this book takes us back to how they met in the first place. Jonathan Afua was a former Ethiopian Prince & was captured by corsairs & his wife & children murdered. He escapes & becomes a member of Captain Kit Hardacre's rag tag crew. Morwena Gambino is trying to keep her family's business running in Palermo but is finding it to be very difficult. Read to find out how Jonathan & Morwena fight all odds against as they grow closer day by day. This was another really good book in the series & I recommend all of them in the series.

Beginning to an end

Great book written by Elizabeth Ellen Carter. This is the last and third book of her Corsairs Series.
It is like a beginning of an ending and will tell you the story of Jonathan and Morwena. You meet Kit Hardacre and Elias Nash and how they met Jonathan Afua.
Then on to Sicily to meet Morwena Gambino. Her family owns an Iron business that Morwena usually runs.
As you read the story you see the attraction between Jonathan and Morwena that turns into to love. Jonathan has ghosts that he needs to except and Morwena has a family that she needs to take care of.
This is a story that needs to be read and enjoyed.
HAPPY READING!!!

A very interesting third book in the series. Their story takes place prior to the first two books and once you realize this-it is a well written story about two people that probably should have never met, much less fall in love and marry. Johnathan, having been kidnapped by slavers-who murdered his family, is rescued by our beloved Kit and Elias. Becoming a member of their trusted crew, he meets Morwena while in port. Morwena is a sweet, intelligent woman with a very dysfunctional family. Johnathan and friends protect her from the many dangers of her perils and, through it all, Johnathan and Morwena fall in love.

How Jonathan and Morwena met

We have already seen that Jonathan and Morwena have fallen in love and married in the previous books in the series. Here we get to read their story.

Jonathan was an Ethiopian prince who was betrayed by someone close to his family, and Morwena is running her family business more and more more due to her father’s gradually deteriorating physical and mental health.

The Kit Hardacre we meet in this book is the reckless and driven man who we see at the beginning of the series before he meets and falls in love.

This has been a very enjoyable series and I look forward to reading more books by Elizabeth Ellen Carter

I loved reading the story about Jonathan and Morwena, how they met and how they navigated the treacherous waters of grief, past lives, and inexplicable longing. Elizabeth Ellen Carter did a magnificent job weaving their story in with the previous/other stories of Kit and Elias’ exploits while discovering their own destiny. This was the first book I’ve read by Ms. Carter, but very much enjoyed living this adventure through her awesome storytelling ability. This is a book I can easily recommend to anyone who loves reading about electrifying adventures of the mystifying, audacious Corsairs.

Once an Ethiopian prince Jonathan Afua family has been murdered and he’s struggling to stay alive after being captured by the corsairs who have slaughter everyone he once cared about. He escapes and falls in with an English pirate Kit Hardacre and he reluctantly joins his crew. He meets the fiery Sicilian woman Morwena Gambino in Palermo where she’s struggling to keep the family business afloat. As the two grow closer secrets emerge and they find they have something in common, betrayal by those close to them. The books is filled with danger and mystery both on land and at sea. A great story line of a Prince and a shop girl who intrigues him as no other, he thought after his wife died he would never love again, but Morwena has wiggled her way into his heart and soul. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
