திருநெல்வேலி சரித்திரம்
கால்டுவெல் (1814-1891) கிருத்துவ சங்கத் தொண்டராய் 1838 ஆம் ஆண்டில் சென்னை மாநகர் வந்து சேர்த்ந்தார். அப்போது அவருக்கு வயது 28. அது முதல் அவர் 53 ஆண்டுகள் நமது அருமைத் தமிழ்நாட்டில் அருந்தொண்டு புரிந்தார். திருநெல்வேலி நாட்டிலுள்ள இடையன்குடி என்னும் சிற்றூரை அவர் இருப்பிடமாகக் கொண்டார். நெல்லை நாடு அவரைத் தன் மகனாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டது. இவ்வாறு தம்மை ஏற்றுக் கொண்ட நெல்லை நாட்டிற்குச் சிறந்த முறையில் நன்றி செலுத்தினார் கால்டுவெல். திருநெல்வேலி நாட்டுச் சரித்திரத்தை வரைமுறையாக முதன் முதல் ஆங்கிலத்தில் எழுதியவர் அவரே. அதனைச் சென்னை அரசாங்கத்தார் அச்சிட்டு வெளிப்படுத்தினர். ஆசிரியருக்கு ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் நன்கொடையும் அளித்தனர். பாண்டி நாட்டின் பழம் பெருமையை அச் சரித்திர நூலில் பரக்க காணலாம்.

கால்டுவெல் அவர்கள் 18 மொழிகளைக் கற்றவர். பல்வேறு வரலாற்று நூல்களையும் இலக்கியங்களையும் கற்றவர். சமய அறிவு நிரம்பப்பெற்றவர். எனவே தம் அறிவு முழுமையும் பயன்படுத்தி மொழி நூலையும் வரலாற்று நூலையும் சமய நூலையும் உருவாக்கித் தமிழர் உள்ளங்களில் நீங்காத இடம் பெற்றவர். இவர் இயற்றிய திருநெல்வேலி சரித்திரம் என்னும் இந்நூல் அக்காலத்தில் இருந்த போர்ச்சுகீசிய, டச்சு, பிரெஞ்சு, ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் தமிழ்நாட்டில் நிலைகொண்டு வாழ்வதற்குச் செய்த முயற்சிகளையெல்லாம் மிகச்சரியாகப் பதிவு செய்துள்ளது. அக்காலத்தில் இருந்த படைத்தளபதிகள், சமயத் தொண்டர்கள் எழுதிய மடல்கள், நூல்கள், குறிப்புகள், வாய்மொழிச் செய்திகள், அகழாய்வுச் செய்திகள் இவற்றைத் துணைக்கொண்டு வரலாற்று நூலை எழுதியுள்ளார்.

Why did I read this work?
I grew up in Tamil Nadu. I am interested in Tamil History.
The common saying in Tamil Nadu -- people who study history are failures.
This is not true. History encapsulates every field.
As far as I know, not much work or interest is taken in developing or writing about Tamil History.
There are few scholars who have contributed, other than that, not much popular works.
However, History is a story of all of us, story of us Tamil people.
This work was written by 1881, a work of erudition, authority, thorough scholarship.
What do I think of this work?
One of the fewest, thorough, erudite accounts available on History of Tirunelveli.
I like how Caldwell structured his work, sub-headings on each side.
This helps me as a reader to understand, get a flow of what is happening in context.
Many parts of his work are obscure, might require a new translation.
What could be done further?
To Write a brief summary of this is highly relevant - Why?
People might understand brief narrative of their own history.
I’d come back, take this task to this work perhaps in another decade or two.
Why read this work?
You might learn about clans, social structure, rulers or eras in Tamil History.
With this, you can connect a larger context of Tamil Nadu’s history.
You might understand your own ancestry.
