Banshee Creek

The Magical Curiosity Shoppe

Rate this book
Three deliciously spooky (and hilariously funny) mystery stories in a little shop that wasn't there yesterday.

The Mystery of the Halloween Mask
Halloween is usually a blast in Banshee Creek, Virginia, also known as The Most Haunted Town in the USA, but not for Magical Mystery Shoppe owner, Dora Pendragon. The immortal witch is tasked — or, to be more accurate, cursed — with guarding dangerous and mysterious objects in her dimension-hopping store. This is, to put it mildly, not the most fun way for a witch to spend eternity, and when a cursed mask disappears from the shop on Halloween night Dora is caught in a race against time. She has to solve the mystery behind the curse, find the mask, and return it to the shop before its bloody legacy exacts a terrible price.

The Mystery of the Christmas Doll
Christmas in Banshee Creek usually means cold weather, hot chocolate, and lots of toys. But when a haunted doll with a bloody past arrives in the Magical Curiosity Shoppe, Dora Pendragon suspects that the innocent-looking toy is determined to find a new owner. Will Dora solve the mystery behind the doll before it finds a new victim?

The Mystery of the Love Potion
It's Valentine's Day in the Most Haunted Town in the USA. February is a slow month for Banshee Creek, but not for Dora Pendragon. The Magical Curiosity Shoppe seems to be searching for a new item, and it's not the only one. A mysterious stranger is also looking for a delicate glass bottle with curious markings and powerful magical contents. Should Dora give up the precious liquid, or should she finally confront the eldritch force that holds her prisoner, once and for all?

Hi! I write about smart, funny people making out (and finding corpses) in haunted houses. I like ghost stories, chocolate, and sangría.

After wrapping up the Banshee Creek and then the Main Street Witches series, I was not ready to be done with that magically fun world the author created. I was delighted to note this collection of three short stories and didn't even realize that I'd actually grabbed the next set of spin off stories in the proper chronological order until I started reading.

As I said, The Magical Curiosity Shoppe is a collection of three short stories. They are centered around the holidays of Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day and they feature a new witch in Banshee Creek. Except unlike the Main Street Witches: Kat, Luanne, and Fiona, Dora is an immortal witch who has been cursed to be the shop's keeper for thousands of years because she made only one mistake- but it was a big one. She opened Pandora's Box. Yes, she is that 'Dora' and, yes, the shop is really the original 'box'.

The shop is magical because it has existed for time out of mind, but also travels through dimensions with Dora and the other occupants of the shop for each new encounter with people who give her magical artifacts to keep in the shop and the people who will eventually be the new keepers of the artifacts. Dora has no control over where the shop goes or whom the artifacts go to. She is used to cursed objects coming and then going to wreck their malicious havoc on a new person. It has been her fate to be the keeper of the shop. She is used to the cursed teddy bear, the daemon who is her talking cat companion, the snooty Victorian dolls, the chilling wax candles, and the dark sword among the other magical or sentient objects packed onto shelves.

But, now, something new is happening after thousands of years of the same ol'. The shop has returned to Banshee Creek and it has stayed for over three month at the start of the stories. Dora has tentatively made friends with Patricia who runs the bakery and the witches who also have shops on Main Street. She's never stayed so long in one place nor has she felt such a strong urge to leave her shop and prevent the trouble the magical artifacts can cause people. A knowing PRoVE member, Thomas Lane, watches her with amusement- and, does he know about her and the shop? PRoVE, the group of paranormalies who rush around researching all phenomenon and make Banshee Creek an exciting tour destination are more than they seem, too. Especially Thomas.

Dora was a great character with her awkwardness about friendship, her quirky shop companions, and her hesitant steps to rejoin the world after so long. I enjoyed all three of her adventures keeping certain nasty magical artifacts from harming people and the twists each story took. The stories are all separate adventures, but they tie together nicely into one, too. Nothing was ever resolved entirely as to Dora's fate, but there was some further explanation in the last story and hints that Dora will reappear in the start of the new series, Drop Dead Witchy. Oh yes, I will be proceeding into that one next.

For those who enjoy paranormal cozies set in a small and quirky haunted Virginia Mountain town, look no further.

5 Curiously Hopeful Stars

The Magical Curiosity Shoppe is a Banshee Creek side story regaling a few tales of the mysterious moving shop filled with magical and fairly often deadly wares, by Ani Gonzalez.

The outcomes of the individual short stories were unexpected to say the least. I did really enjoy the glimpse into Dora Pendragon’s life. I only wish that there was an entire novel, all her own, to explore her story further.

I enjoyed the premise of the story. This is my first book to read and will be looking up more in this series. My only negative is the last story really needs more editing.

Ani Gonzalez presents three more short stories to her Banshee Creek universe. Each of these stories involves the Magical Curiosity Shoppe run by Dora (short for Pandora) Pendragon. Since she opened the box, Pandora has been cursed with guarding dangerous and mysterious objects in her dimension-hopping store. She's allowed to leave the store for only short periods of time but doesn't really need to. She doesn't have to eat, and if she wants to buy something from somewhere else the store provides her with money. The store even upgrades itself when new technology comes out. The store seems to know when a new object is going to be coming in, and at the same time it knows when one wants to leave. Dora has no control over where the shop will appear, how long it will stay, and where it will go next. Dora's shop is new to Banshee Creek, Virginia. It has been to Banshee Creek multiple times in the past few hundred years. Will it stay a while or will it jump to its next location right away?

The Mystery of the Halloween Mask
A Celtic mask wants to leave the store. But Dora wants to do everything that she can to keep it there. The mask is cursed to suffocate anyone who wears it. So, for it to leave will mean that someone will die. Can Dora keep the mask in the store?

The Mystery of the Christmas Doll
A doll with a fiery past finds its way to Dora's store. But this toy doesn't want to stay put. It is determined to find a new owner. Can Dora keep the doll from finding a new victim? Or is there more going on with it than she realizes?

The Mystery of the Love Potion
A crazy amount of glass bottles are shipped to Dora's store. At first, she has no idea why they are there, but then the store creates a back room to house the bottles. It isn't until one of the Fae show up demanding the bottle that Dora realizes what's going on. Can she figure out which bottle he's looking for?

Overall, I enjoyed reading this collection of short stories. I am looking forward to future Banshee Creek stories and hope that Gonzalez puts out another three short stories surrounding Dora's shop in the near future.

Banshee Creek may be a little town but it has a whole menageries of ghosts, ghouls and other things which should go bump in the night!

Dora (AKA Pandora...yes THAT Pandora) has been the keeper of the Curiosity shop for millennia. Its changed shape over the centuries and keeps itself up to date with the latest technology. Dora always frets when new things appear in the shop as bad things usually happen to those who are destined for that item. BUT things seem to be changing, the shop has stayed put way longer than usual, Dora is making friends with the locals and dare she say that she has a little crush on a certain PROVE member!

The Mystery of the Halloween Mask
The spooky mask which turned up in the shop seems to have death attached t it somehow, but can Dora thwart its path?

The Mystery of the Christmas Doll
Creepy dolls - I always hated the damn things and now they move of they own accord! EEEEP. But will one special doll cause pain and suffering or bring joy?

The Mystery of the Love Potion
The mystery surrounding Thomas is finally revealed. Banshee Creek does Valentines Day the only way they know - with much ghostly goings on!

Great little vignettes into the mystery of the Shop and Dora. Really hoping for more stories from this part of Banshee Creek!

A collection of short stories that were entertaining and brought back some of the old characters while allowing us to get to know Dora and meet a couple of new characters. I really liked the Christmas doll story, and the fact that Dora learned something from it. Her belief that all of the items in her shop are evil, and the fact that she wasn't invested in what happened when items came and went from the shop made her realize that she wasn't always as astute as she may have thought. Although a curse, she also got to experience life in a way that was somewhat comfortable. Anything she needed, the shop provided. Changing history, the chance to have adventures as she could leave the shop, just not for long. However, it was also a little lonely if you consider that she could not form attachments unless they were with someone like Thomas. Which, have to admit, I do like the ever evolving characters in the various series. There are definitely some grammatical and spelling errors that need to be addressed, but overall, still a fun series to read.

Nice to find all these stories in one place.

Catching up on reviews. Didn’t realize kindle wasn’t marking these completed.

Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...

1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.

2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.

3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.

4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.

5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.

A great collection

Love the Banshee Creek books. She has been keeper of the Magical Curiosity Shoppe for thousands of years. With the shop always moving around, she had never made friends until now. The shop has been here for a few months along with it dire contents. Read three stories about how items in her shop find their new owners. Can she do anything to limit the damage they do? Will she make good friends here. Although we never actually get to know her name - a good clue is given at the end of the third story. Brilliant piece of craftsmanship with characters that you will take too quickly. The only criticism i have is that it was only 78% of the page count.

The Mystery of the Halloween Mask - Ani Gonzalez - This is by one of my favorite authors. Dora is the keeper of the Magical Curiosity Shoppe in Banshee Creek. Love paranormal stories.

The Mystery of the Christmas Doll - Christmas in Banshee Creek and Dora is chasing down a doll. Really hoping she and Thomas get their own longer book. Love her Banshee Creek books.

The Mystery of the Love Potion - Love her Banshee Creek series. Dora has a magical shop and packages of bottles show up. Bubo the cat is still his crazy self and we get to find out "who" Thomas really is. Lots of questions answered.

Short but Entertaining

The 3 books in the set were very short, so there was not much depth to the storylines. But the characters were fun and interesting. The first two books resolved their storyline easily. The third book felt incomplete, too open ended. An artifact left and we know it is dangerous. But we do not know what happened with it. The storyline behind the artifact was very interesting. It actually had more depth than the storyline in the first two books. But I dislike books with no firm ending. Too bad as it had a lot of promise to be an excellent story. Also the third book had a lot of grammatical errors. A good proof reader would have caught them easily.

My favorite of the three was The Mystery of the Christmas Doll. This was the most well-crafted story.

The third story, The Mystery of the Love Potion, needs MAJOR editing. Seems like it was written on the fly and never proof-read. (If you don't know whether it is "sluagh" or "slaugh" in your own book, you probably need to do some more research about the terms being used.) Speaking of which, I found a lot of the "info dump" annoying in the books. Author seemed to be trying to cram in as many magical/paranormal/whatever terms as could be googled into extremely brief stories.

Enchanting

I adore the stories about Banshee Creek. This fictional town set in Virginia has lovable characters that can be found throughout the different stories. The Magical Curiosity Shoppe being on of them. Dora and Bubo are delightfully funny, with a hint of sarcasm. And the mystical and magical items sure do add to the fun. This book carries a few stories of these items and the havoc experienced by Dora as she tries to keep them away from curious.

This was a great taster for new characters coming up in Banshee Creek. Three short reads all featuring Dora and her Curiosity Shoppe that are fast paced, enjoyable and (if you never go on to read any other Banshee Creek) completely standalone. You don't need to have read any of the previous books and you won't need to read any after. If you are unsure of the series and don't want to commit to a full book, this would make the perfect starting point to give you an idea if it's for you.

Even if you've never read about Banshee Creek you can pick up and enjoy without a problem, well, except for wanting to go back and get more. This is a grouping of three short stories involving a rather peculiar little shop and it's proprietor which is tethered to magic but not time or place. The publisher's blurb gives a good idea of the characters and basic ideas, but might not be clear on the part where this is not horror. I totally love Banshee Creek!

I’ve already read the Banshee Creek and Main Street Witches series so this was a great addition. I do recommend you read the other series first before you tackle this Yes, I do wish there was more. This has a great storyline and the third story left me hanging which does coincide with where the other two series are going. So far I’m hanging off a cliff waiting for the finale and I am loving it.

Loved these books

I absolutely loved her Banshee Creek books. I read them all and highly recommend them. I am sad there are no more to read right now. I am hoping she has more coming as she is a great writer. I am not usually a fan of mysteries but I love all things paranormal and especially witchy stuff. So if you like a good mystery and some lovable characters and lots of laughs try these books out. You won’t be disappointed.

I absolutely loved this mini series! Dora is a fantastic character with a long and interesting history. Her Shoppe magically dimension hops and has returned to Banshee Creek in these shorts. I could totally devour a nice, long series of this crazy Shoppe and its inhabitants. So glad Ani wrote these three!

I found this short story book collection entertaining but the last "book" in this collection needs an edit. I found many missing and incorrect words. One paragraph had the word "didn't" in 3 very short sentences. I have read all of this authors books and typically find them very entertaining.

How fun

How fun ! A town that’s Halloween everyday and a magical artifact store. I’m thinking a humorous “Warehouse 13” in book form. These three short reads were great one sitting adventures. This series seems like a real entertaining one.

This is a collection of shorts, each correlating with a witch and a holiday. We have “The Halloween Mask,” “Christmas Doll,” and “Love Potion.”

These stories were okay to read. They had a lot of hocus pocus jargon and sometimes the story line wasn’t too clear. I liked the concept though.

Different concept

This book has a bit more overt magic than the other Banshee Creek ones I've read. If the publishers fix the extremely irritating mistakes (the spelling of mms and foreign words was incredibly distracting) like the underlying premise a

These stories gave a glimpse of the characters and town. Each story tells about an item from the shop. And a bit more detail about the people.
