Sarab: A Novel

Rate this book
During the 1979 siege of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, a jihadi and a French officer she takes hostage form an unlikely bond...

On a morning in 1979, the world is holding its breath. A troop of terrorist fanatics occupy the Great Mosque in Mecca and take thousands of believers hostage. Among the insurgents, hidden in men’s clothes, is the girl Sarab.

When the counterattack starts, and paratroopers rain from the sky, she flees into the catacombs, where she encounters an unconscious French soldier. Through a sewer, she drags him outside and hides with him in an empty apartment. These two, who at first violently hate each other, tell a story that transcends all boundaries in Mecca, then in Paris.

Another book that was part of my quest to read a book from every country in the world. This time: Saudi-Arabia. Alem writes about the unlikely love between a religious fanatic and a french soldier. I think this book is a raw diamond. The overall prose is mostly excellent, the characters are multifaceted and the overarching story is interesting. Alem plays a lot with metaphors and symbolism. Especially colour and animals are a recurring theme throughout the novel and are connected to Sarab's personal development. There are, however, some elements of the language that were a bit distracting and I don't think that they were translation issues (I read the German translation). I think with these distracting elements out of the way, this would've been among the best books I've read. Still a very enjoyable book regardless and I will definitely check out more works written by Alem.

A horrendous look inside an ISIS type group, doesn't skimp on the vicious and evil. Also an interesting insight into the cruelty of Muslim women, directing the same disdain toward other women that they have felt. Sad.

Sarah is a histrionical physiological novel through Sarab’s journey
