Beta Brothers #1

My Best Friend's Ex

Rate this book
I’ve always been good at sharing. You have to be when you grow up in a family like mine.

But I never wanted to share Logan.

From the moment I saw him, my skin prickled and my insides burned, as if I’d found something I hadn’t realized I was looking for.

Unfortunately, I had to keep that to myself since, like all the kids my parents brought home, he was considered family from the moment he took a seat at our table. So from that day on, I did everything I could to force a familial bond.

Piper didn’t have to, though. She noticed immediately how special he was, and it wasn’t long before she was caring for him in a way I couldn’t, a way I wasn’t ready for.

A way that made me insanely jealous.

Night after night, I’d watch her leave my house and sneak over to the annex above our garage to visit him, and I’d stare at the small, curtain-covered window until my eyes burned with tears.

I wanted to be happy for them. After all, Piper and I had been best friends since I was six, and she was so content with him… at least, in the beginning. But it was hard because their relationship taught me that I wasn’t as good at sharing as I thought. I just never cared about anything enough to want it all to myself before.

Until Logan.

Not that I held it against them that they got together. I know better than anyone that you can’t help who you love. You can only help who knows about it.

And since he’ll always be off-limits, there’s no point in sharing my secret.

It doesn’t matter if my body screams for his touch whenever we cross paths.

It doesn’t matter that my heart swells to six times its normal size at the mere thought of that handsome loner’s shy smile.

It doesn’t matter if I think I could love him better than she did.

Because Logan Jones and I are never going to happen.

*This standalone contemporary romance features forbidden love, yummy fratboys, and warm fuzzies galore. Ridiculously happy ending guaranteed! Enjoy!

Worst kind of story. He screwed around PLENTY including a 2 year relationship with her best friend, who he loved and ended up knocking up. While the stupid doormat h pines for him and remains a virgin. What a loser. This h is an idiot, going on what a great guy he is and how they've waited so long. He didn't wait for shit you moron, he was boning your best friend for years and LOVED her and would've stayed with and loved her if they'd had a kid. Hello...loser.

I hate this kind of sexist bullshit.

Virgin Heroine
Hero fell in love with her best friend first, made a baby with her that they lost

My problem with books like this is you immerse us in the heroines pain in the fact he was with her best friend, and we have no way to counteract that feeling. We could have if the author had allowed the heroine to date and experience other men, then it wouldn't hit as hard, but instead we get a pining virgin who just wants him and he went with her best friend first. I don't care if he was attracted to heroine first, but didn't think it could happen. I still am pissed because the heroine was in a frozen state till he was ready for her. Also in his inner thoughts he waxes poetic over the relationship with the best friend....just no

So much could be fixed in romance books if you just let the heroines ENJOY AND HAVE SEX WITH MEN OTHER THAN THE HERO!!!

The hero and heroine are foster brother and sisters, so she thinks she should see him only as a part of her family but deep down she has feelings for him.

The hero sleeps with many other girls but even worse, he dates her best friend for 2 years, knocks her up but then they lose the baby.

The poor and pathetic heroine pines for him all the time and remains a virgin until he gives her a chance finally when he accepts that he can't deny his feelings any more.... Yay, how nice.

This was a pretty quick read and while I did end up enjoying it, there were a few things that I didn't care for. The whole adopted brother/sister thing didn't bother me but the title of this book should have been about that and now about her best friend's ex because more of the conflict stemmed from her adopted parents taking him in when he was 16 and becoming his legal guardians than him being her best friend's ex. We hardly even saw the best friend and when she found out, it was a bit of a let down. Still, I was really excited about Zoey's roommate Nina hooking up with Logan's best friend Carter. I couldn't wait to read their book.

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I have read this book after reading the second one in the series. I should have done it the other way. But, honestly, I could follow the story without problems.
This is Logan and Zoey's story. They are foster brother and sister. And Logan used to be Zoey's best friend's boyfriend. There you go, extreme drama.
Although they know it's going to be complicated for everyone, they can't ignore their feelings.
An easy to read and sweer story.

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**

This. To me, this is what good love stories are all about.

Logan has always been off-limits to Zoey, but that didn't stop him from dating her best friend. And even though things ended badly between the couple, Zoey couldn't stop herself from pining for the boy who could never be hers. That is, until she moves away to college and runs into Logan again, causing all of the long-suppressed emotions to rush forward. And this time, she's not sure if she should hide them.

Zoey was always the girl that Logan couldn't have. After her family took him in, he could never repay their kindness by taking advantage of their daughter. And while he dated other girls, a piece of his heart always belonged to Zoey. So being near her again is making it hard to pretend that he doesn't still care for her. Because if anyone deserves a happy ending, it's her, and he's starting to wonder if he's the one who could play her Prince Charming.

This is why I love reading this author's work. Every time I pick up a book by her, I know I'm going to get a likable couple of characters and a believable storyline. And thankfully, it doesn't follow the stereotypical romance book formula. You know the one. It gets tiring to read the same thing over and over. No so with this author. In fact, the best thing about her books is how easy they are to read and enjoy. I don't have to try to like the characters, I just do. I don't have to pretend to care about the plot, I'm immediately intrigued by it. It's a gift that I'm glad she's decided to share with the world.

I think the thing that I like most about this book was how simple it was. There was no crazy and unbelievable plot, no obnoxious characters or unnecessary drama, and even the conflict was not drawn out to frustrate the reader. This love story could be anyone's story. Two people who cannot be together, suddenly seeing their future may be possible, and going for it. No over-exaggerated issues or half a dozen conflicts to overcome and no main character being a jerk for no good reason. I love how much this book was just about 'love'.

Don't get me wrong, there is some steam here too. We have to wait a bit because the heroine is inexperienced and our hero wants to make it memorable for her. That's just another reason to love Logan, of course. And I enjoyed how much that annoyed Zoey. There is another thing I liked about this book and that's the theme of overcoming a difficult past. Especially for Logan. I was proud of him for taking his skill and turning it into a business. He was also a romantic, something I don't see enough in the romance genre with so many alpha male bad boys. Logan was great.

In closing...
This is a promising start to a new series. Five suns!

Amazing!

I loved this story.
It was about Zoey and Logan who are siblings through fostering and then adoption.
They have always had feelings for each other but have kept them hidden due to the complicated dynamics of their family.
Zoey stood by and watched as her best friend Piper and Logan got together.
When zoey leaves home for college, she meets Logan there.
I enjoyed reading about their story.
I was unsure about their back story with regard to Piper. It was touched upon that Piper purposefully went after Logan even though she knew that her best friend and Logan had feelings for each other. It didn't come across as behaviour of a best friend.
I loved Nina who was Zoey's college roommate and would love to read her story in the future.
I would also love to read Piper's book too as it would maybe answer a few questions regarding her pursuit of Logan.
Overall i enjoyed this story.

MY BEST FRIEND’S EX

This was an interesting story, and nothing like I’ve read before. Did I like it, yea some of it but there were things I didn’t really enjoy in it either. And the same with the characters, sometimes I liked them sometimes I didn’t. It isn’t a favourite of mine of this author, however I have no doubs there will be plenty of people who love it. It just wasn’t the story for me. This is my opinion and has nothing to do with the authors writing more with the storyline. A copy was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book with my honest opinion.

ARC review - it a must read book if you love sweet and caring stories with passion and heat!

I read all of Hazel kelly books and I always wonder how she makes her books addictive but she done it again. I couldn’t put it down, had to finish in one go. I love ZoLo they are made for each other, the book doesn’t drag out their story and there not too much dramatics that some books give.

Zoey is sweet and cares for everyone and Logan is perfect for her. They compliment each other and he cares just as much as Zoey does just not everyone knows it!

I hope we get Carter story next and I hope Nina but I know whatever Hazel decides will be another page turner!

As a teenager, I would have ate up the whole “I’m not like other girls” trope. Mostly because at the time, I (embarrassingly) enjoyed reading those stories. But since growing up, I find these types of stories borderline repulsive.

My issues in this book start plain and simple at the whole “wow! you’re a virgin? you don’t look like a prude.”

^^^ was this necessary?

Listen, there’s nothing wrong about making the MC a virgin, but to literally make it a plot point throughout the entire book about how big of a deal it is was annoying to say the least.

Again, using the phrase “I look like a cheap hooker” because she wore makeup? Sounds like her friend didn’t put the makeup on nicely, because I literally pictured her looking like a clown considering how much she expressed she “never does this” and “it doesn’t look good”.

Zoey and Logan’s characters were one dimensional, and I wished we learned more about his past. Their “fight” barely lasted a chapter, and after he verbally hurt her with his words, all was forgotten when she suddenly said “Piper knows.” Are we supposed to forget that Zoey said that she also suffered? Please, let me know, Zoey, I’m interested. I’m a personal believer that trauma makes a person, so this entire book was warning “oh, Logan can have issues” or what not—but, what issues?? It was never mentioned, only implied.

Again, the whole conflict in the story was how Piper and her parents would react to Logan and Zoey dating. I’m still trying to figure out how Zoey’s grassy hair and wrong way shirt was enough evidence for Piper to say “it’s Logan, right? You’re with Logan.”

I simply stared at the screen for a long second, because how did she now? And most importantly, she didn’t care??

Similar to her dad, who we only meet 80% into the book, solely for Logan to get his “permission”. Again, he doesn’t care, so this whole “forbidden romance” isn’t actually forbidden because the people who were supposed to not approve this get together actually approved!

Everything was so anticlimactic, and half of the scenes were useless to the development of the characters or the plot. I wish it was more exciting.

Lastly, it was also mind-boggling how quick Zoey and her roommate became friends. She preached how Piper was her best friend since she was six, but we seriously did not hear from her until she suddenly knocked on Zoey’s door, while she was with Logan. Convenient, right?

I guess somewhat spoiler for the next story featuring her roommate: I read ONE page of the sample after the book finished, and the first thing that’s said is “you haven’t been with one guy since college?”

Can someone explain to me why we’re dramatizing not having sex? I’d love to know but wow! You didn’t have sex for a semester??? What’s wrong with you? Are you okay?

Anyways, that’s my whole rant on this book. The only reason why I couldn’t give it one star was because there was (few) scenes I somewhat enjoyed.

edit: oh! Completely forgot to mention how completely messed up it was that he DATED HER FRIEND because he wanted to be with her and he couldn’t. And got her pregnant. But then he has the audacity to say he “always wanted her”. You are a weak, cowardly man. Boy, actually. This was disappointing.

My Best Friend' s Ex by Hazel Kelly was a cute story about young adult love and covers several genres...friends to lovers, step-siblings to lovers, and dating my friend’s ex as the title suggests. Zoey and Logan both attend the same college (she’s a freshman and he’s a junior I think) and have fought their feelings for each other for many years for obvious reasons. Zoey was adopted and Logan was taken in as a foster child when he was 16 to the same parents so it’s not taboo for me to have them have romantic feelings for one another.

What I liked best about the book was despite Logan’s challenges when he was younger, he grew up to be a wonderful, caring, respectful, and hard working young man with a focus on his education and career making custom furniture. I admired that although it was a difficult discussion to have, he confessed his feelings to her dad prior to their getting too serious. Too many young people today don’t respect adults and I felt like Hazel covered everything just as it should be and that Logan was a great role model.
The was very thoughtful and took things slow with Zoey and planned romantic dates. I also liked how they were honest with each other about their feelings when they were both at college and away from her parents. The book details typical college-aged antics with frat parties, new friendships developing, and balancing it all. Through Hazel’s writing, you can tell how committed they were to each other and building a future together. Their relationship wasn't always perfect and I feel they handled different situations with maturity and trust.

I really liked Zoey’s character, her spunk, and her compassion. I especially liked how she was honest with her friend whom originally dated Logan in high school about her feelings for him. It’s always best to let someone hear news from the person directly rather than the rumor mill and I admired that about her. Zoey wasn't a boyfriend stealer in this book, his relationship with the Ex ended and they both moved on after difficult circumstances. They had both been in love with each other for over ten years and I was routing for the two of them the entire time.

This book of course has a happy ending and I do recommend it if you like stories about young love, I just wish it had an epilogue that featured them in the future.

Zoey's hopes for a relationship with Logan is doomed the start. Her parents are serial adopters and have saved Logan from his troubled youth by taking him in when he was 16. Zoey crushed on Logan back then, but he hooked up with her best friend, Piper. Zoey was heartbroken, but she did not get in the way of their affair. For years, she continued to pine for Logan even after Piper’s pregnancy scare and her eventual break-up with him. Now, Zoey was going to college, the same one Logan was in and it was inevitable that their paths cross again. Unbeknownst to Zoey, Logan had feelings for her and became determined to pursue a relationship with her. When they could finally be together, feelings of guilt towards Piper and her parents, cast a shadow on their budding romance. Will Logan and Zoey’s love survive? How will her parents and Piper take the news of their relationship?

I love Logan’s character – he’s tough on the outside but sensitive and insecure on the inside, being a survivor of childhood abuse. Despite his appalling childhood, he grew up determined to make a life of his own. He grew to be a confident and independent young man and endeavoured to live his life with a purpose. Weaker personalities would be driven to despair and addiction. Zoey was inexperienced and self-doubting and did not want to hurt the feelings of people dear to her. She’s loyal and lovable and the reader can easily relate to her inner conflict, her thoughts and character. I like the wit ever present in the dialogues that are consistently amusing, are punctuated with humor and many times, evoke a lot of feels. These young characters are broken on the inside and yet managed their issues in a level-headed way. I would love to have a supportive roommate like Nina and a best friend like Piper. Towards the end, the reactions to Zoey and Logan’s revelation of their relationship were quite unexpected.

This is a simple yet complicated love story. I enjoyed every moment of reading this book and felt that the characters, although far from perfect, should be good examples to the youth of today.

This had my heart all over the place. It started with what felt like unrequited love for Zoey, who has always had feelings for Logan, even though he was with her best friend Piper. However when she moves away to the same college as Logan and his status is now single, all those feelings resurface. However, there is also bucketloads of angst along the way as they both try and fight their feelings.

When things get hot and heavy their sexual chemistry is absolutely explosive, they were so good together and sometimes, you just have to follow your gut as the heart wants what the heart wants. I really enjoyed their journey together. I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

Logan and Zoey

This was just an all -around sweet story. Aside from the young crushes and heart aches of the past, every character was loving and supportive. Which is rare, but possible. The scene between Logan and Zoey's dad Dan really choked me up. He respected Dan and Zoey enough to put himself out there with his feelings. There aren't many young adults brave enough to do that, considering what was at stake. I'm just glad these two finally came together after years of pining and drama that happened.

What an adorable story. I really enjoyed this book. It's the first I've read from Hazel and I'm glad I started with this book. Logan and Zoey were too cute together. I loved their interaction with each other and you could feel the sexual tension between them from the beginning. Logan is definitely a dream man. Very cute story.

I am a huge fan of Hazel's books. They are always well written and have great storylines with well thought out characters. I absolutely love Zoey. She has traits that are relatable. Logan is the kind of man we all hope for, thoughtful, loving, and seriously hot and talented! Great read! Definitely pick it up!

It started strong but became kind of cheesy. The primary annoyance started with the miscarriage. Because it’s referred to as a pregnancy scare. Obviously a scare is to simply be concerned you could be pregnant then finding out you aren’t. But piper was for sure pregnant she just lost the baby. It’s a minor thing but I hate when stuff like this is done because it isn’t accurate. Besides that and the cheesiness after a certain point it isn’t horrible but not great either. I wanna say around after he confessed his feelings and initiating an almost kiss was when it nosed dived for me. Their chemistry was fun to read because it was cute and innocent in a way. But the premise was kind of silly. I don’t think piper would have really been cool with them getting together like that. I mean she lost a baby with him y’know. Most people wouldn’t be happy for their bestie getting with the guy they almost had a baby with. It’s an ick factor. Plus they were both adopted by the same parents. So although they aren’t blood relatives for all intents and purposes they are family. It reminds me of the fosters tv show with Callie and Brandon trying to have a relationship. As much as you want to root for them it’s still weird to say the least. So the story is cute but unrealistic for me. Then on top of that I didn’t like their chemistry once they became intimate. Those scenes were so cringey to read. All around if the story didn’t include the best friend baby line, cringey sex scenes and their adoption under the same roof it had potential it just didn’t cut it. Oh and him still obviously having feelings for piper was gross as well. Like he knew damn well how he felt about zoey but got with her friend anyway when they were young. Honestly I think he just wanted to be with both of them. It was a weird love triangle he clearly got off on in some way. I really didn’t like him going on about her constantly in the story. It was evident that their history wasn’t really history at all. Never would be either because zoey is her best friend. Realistically one of those friendships would have to end.

Read and reviewed an ARC copy for an honest review on behalf of Everything Marie http://everythingmarie.com

This story was definitely different from any of read before. From the beginning it touched my heart. I am not going to lie and I never bring this up on any of my reviews, but when the book was presented I did read some reviews and they would’ve pushed me away but I decided to give it a shot.
Let me just say it was the best decision I ever made. Zoe and Logan belong together. Their story was hard and emotionally draining but the outcome surpassed all of it. Feelings they had for each other for years were ignored. Logan stayed away from her because of their situation with their family ....he ended up dating one of her best friends and that went south with their own issues- They were always connected due to their family lifestyle but they found their total connection when they both ended up at the same college. He was like a protective beast with her....... he knew he always had feelings for her but he didn’t want to act on them to betray his family.
Only........ the heart wants what the heart wants and will make it happen- it was not easy and there were tears, secrecy... but in the end honesty prevailed-
Definitely a must read- and let me just reiterate everyone has different takes on stories so if you find yourself reading a review that would make you turn Away - sometimes your gut will say give it a shot—. GO WITH IT! I sure am happy I did with this

"It doesn't matter if I think I could love him better than she did."
(If you've ever seen the person you have feelings for be with someone else, then you know just how hard this quote hit me.)
This was my first read by Hazel Kelly and I felt very, underwhelmed to say the least. Mainly, I want to work for my angst when it comes to books like this but this book didn't give me that. I really felt like the pacing could've been done better instead of starting right off the bat with no build up. I'm sure most people don't mind but that's just my personal preference. Although I will say, it made it that much easier and faster to get through.
This book follows Zoey and Logan during their college experience. My memory is already fuzzy but I think we meet Zoey as a freshman while Logan has been there a few years. Zoey has always had feelings for Logan, even after her best friend started to date him but this story starts after they're no longer together.
I really liked seeing how passionate Logan was with his dreams and aspirations and that's where most of my enjoyment came from.  I don't remember if Zoey had any dreams but I didn't really expect it much. I really loved how she always spoke her mind. Not in the badass 'idgaf way' but in the funny, sort of innocent way. I really respected that about her.
I'm sad to say though that I wasn't attached to them at all.  I was definitely happy for them but I wasn't as invested in them as I wished I'd been.
I was interested in Zoey's roommate the most though. She made me laugh so much that I kept anticipating the next scene she would be in. She was hilarious and her maturity showed in everything she said and did. This is why I was way too happy when I found out that the next book in this series was going to follow her. I just love the sense of humor Hazel Kelly writes into her books. It had me busting out laughing when I least expected it.
I really had a big issue with all the drinking that was happening in this book. I kind of get it, it's college, let loose or whatever, but nobody should be drinking as much as they were. The other main thing that didn't sit well with me were the conflicts, or lack-there-of. Whenever something seemed to appear as a conflict, it was resolved too fast for it to be called that.
This was mostly a fluff read and I only had a problem with it because I wasn't in the mood for it at the time. This would definitely be perfect for anyone wanting something light and easy to get them out of a reading slump.

3/5 stars.

Quick Info
Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone
Part of a Series?: Yes
POV: Both
----------------------------------
Meeting the Characters
Zoey - Foster sister of Logan but hes kind of her brother as her 'parents' adopted him too?
Logan - Was dating Piper until it fell apart. Now a college frat boy who makes his move on Zoey
----------------------------------
What happens?
Zoey has adored Logan from afar ever since he came into her life. When he picked her best friend to love and sleep with and make a baby with(!!) When it all falls apart because Piper(best friend) loses the baby and breaks it off with Logan. He goes to college and leaves it all behind hiding away from them all. Zoey starts college at the same college as Logan and he 'looks out for her' looking out for her turns to falling in love.
Final thoughts
I thought this book was bordering on weird. Its so close to being wrong but it isn't. They aren't blood related and they didn't grow up together. I sort of felt that Zoey was a fool. Shes technically getting the sloppy seconds and realistically if Logan and Piper hadn't had that pregnancy they would still have carried on hurting Zoey without knowing so really this relationship blows from the get go.
Would I read again?: No
Would I read this author again? Unsure.

Definitely a must read- and let me just reiterate everyone has different takes on stories so if you find yourself reading a review that would make you turn Away - sometimes your gut will say give it a shot—. GO WITH IT! I sure am happy I did with this
One- a beautiful story!

I LOVED these characters!! Hazel Kelly does a great job creating characters that are so real that you usually end up wanting to be friends with them. I loved the banter between Zoe and Logan and I loved how the got equally nervous around each other. I think it's always scary when you've had feelings for someone for years and you've convinced yourself that there's no way they could possibly return those feelings to ever try to lay your cards on the table. I really liked the progression of Zoe and Logan's relationship. They certainly had an unconventional situation, but that definitely made for an interesting story. I also loved the supporting characters Carter and Nina. Nina and Zoe's conversations had me laughing out loud. The Barnacle Club! LOVED that. Carter is the type of guy that's concerned about people but he doesn't want to necessarily come off that way so he tries to hide it with his bro talk but it was obvious that him and Logan had a good friendship. This is a great, easy read with lots of wit and a happily ever after. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

LOL! I very much liked this book!

Zoey is capricious, smart, and enchanting to Logan, while he has been her secret (she thought) crush since she was fourteen. While I don't agree with her decision to sacrifice her own feelings and happiness for her best friend Piper (who, btw, was selfish all the time she hooked up with Logan because she KNEW about Zoey's mad crush yet carried on knowing it hurt Zoey to watch them), it does all work out for her because Logan values her even more once they commit to each other. I think he realized how much more precious and beautiful Zoey's calm and serenity were compared to the crazy, emotionally-cold neediness of Piper's and his time together.

The banter that Zoey, Logan and Nina engage in produced many sudden outbursts of hilarity from me. This romantic comedy that I initially thought would involve more drama turned out to be a great afternoon's read.

Having "chemistry" with someone is all fun and games in college. Unless you have that chemistry with your best friends ex, who also happens to be your "adopted" brother. Zoey is off to college, the same college her adopted brother goes too. After a few parties, and years of ignoring their feelings, they decide to go for what they never even imagined could be possible.

This book was excellent and well the only way to say it is.....HOT. I love Zoey with her innocent good girl ways and Logan for his exact opposite bad boy ways. When you read this story, you can feel the chemistry burning from the pages. Even though the whole book has a big taboo type background (with the best friends ex and adopted brother thing) I found it to be a great love story. I rooted for them from the start.

It is fun and easy to read. It was fast paced and action packed from page one, and I loved it. I can't wait to read more in this series and more from this author. I think she may be a new favorite for me. :)

Le sigh

This book... Okay, so for one, the characters acted way more immature than their age. I mean, Logan is at least 20 and read like he was in HS. On top of that, I felt like the whole story was leading up to them having sex, not a relationship. Granted, I only made it 20% because I couldn't handle the formatting anymore. Double spaced, no indents. It's so hard on the eyes and doesn't flow well. It just felt like another regurgitation of things I've already read.

I do recommend formatting. Unless the author is going for page stuffing to make the book bigger. There are plenty of programs to format it correctly without having to hire someone.

When her best friend gets the guy she's fallen for, the guy she can never have as he's part of her unconventional family, Zoey has no option but to be happy for them. Even though it tears her apart. After all you can't help who you fall in love with. Right?
My Best Friends Ex by Hazel Kelly is perfect. Logan is a brooding loner and a really nice guy despite what life has thrown his way. And Zoey is just adorable. I loved the storyline, it's fun, angsty, sexy, and heart warming. It's a beautiful romance that has everything it needs, making it an absolute must read! You won't be disappointed.
