Sherlock Holmes and The Adventure of The Pigtail Twist

Rate this book
It is June 1884, a grey period for both the weather and Sherlock Holmes’ mood. A lack of compelling cases has left him bored and close once again to the dull embrace of the needle. Less than a month earlier, however, he had astonished Inspector Lestrade and everyone around him by solving no less than six crimes in consecutive days.
At the eleventh hour, Inspector Gregson arrives, with the promise of an impossible crime to solve. A murder has shattered the bucolic peace of the sleepy arable farmlands of Bedfordshire. The owner of a small stately home has been brutally killed while hosting a dinner party. But what and where is the murder weapon?
What follows is an epic, sweeping tale. From England to Africa, from poverty to wealth, the story spans decades. Hardship and friendship are followed by betrayal, deception and murder.

Hailing from Bedford, in the South East of England, Matthew Simmonds has been a confirmed devotee of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation since first watching Jeremy Brett's incomparable portrayal of the world's first consulting detective, on a Tuesday evening in April, 1984, while curled up on the sofa with his father.

He has written numerous short stories, and his first novel, "Sherlock Holmes: The Adventure of The Pigtail Twist" was published in 2018. A sequel is nearly complete, which he hopes to publish in the near future.

Matthew currently co-owns Harrison & Simmonds, the fifth-generation family business, a renowned County tobacconist, pipe and gift shop on Bedford High Street.

I am the author’s wife and by its definition not an objective reviewer. However, removing the wife’s hat, I can say with utmost sincerity that his first and surprise book (I didn’t know he was writingJ) was a thoroughly engaging mystery to read and well written too. Being an outspoken fan of Arthur Conan Doyle, I can say that the Pigtail Twist just as well depicts the world’s only consulting detective flexing his intellectual muscles and practicing his deductive skills. I thoroughly enjoyed following Holmes’ mind at work and his superb methods of observation.
I think no one summarises this book better than Dominici Selwood on the back of the book:
"The great sleuth is back! Soaring, swooping, epic. Baffling crimes, ingenious cold deduction, masterfully drawn creative and destructive tensions in 221B Baker Street and London’s squalid slums. Astride it all, Holmes is magisterial. THE ADVENTURE OF THE PIGTAIL TWIST has it all. This is vintage Holmes: intensely atmospheric and fiendishly clever. It’s authentic to a tee. I couldn’t put it down. A real delight."

Every time I find a good “new tales” of Sherlock Holmes book, I utterly delight in it. The author managed to keep a fair amount of Doyle’s voice in the stories while crafting quality mysteries. Bravo!

"Stop nannying, Watson. There is much to do."
One of the better pastiche presentations of the Conan Doyle character, Sherlock Holmes and his friend and associate, Dr.Watson. As in the original, the happenings are recounted in first person by Watson, who offers his own observations during the unfolding cases, frequently depreciating his own hard looked for assumptions in the greater understanding of the master detective. Their relationship is sensitively explored and portrayed.

The book is in two parts, an initial six, very short, crime stories solved over a six day period and then the main body of the book, the complex tale of the death of a well known estate owner during the course of a dinner party; and it is this latter which evokes the enquiring mind of Holmes, with the addition of a delightful ending twist. Narration by Jeff Manning is excellent, precise and well modulated, his clear English accented voice perfectly suited to the period without sounding stilted to the modern ear. He also subtly gives individual voice to every character. A fine performance.

My thanks to the rights holder of Pigtail Twist, who, at my request via Audiobook Boom, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. A most enjoyable addition to the modern and further tales of this great fictional detective duo. I hope that there will be more to come.

I am a huge fan of the original Holmes stories, and I found that this book mirrored the style of the originals. The mysteries were engaging and well-written. The narration was also quite good. Listening to the book was alomst as fun as listening to Doyle's work.

I was given a free copy of this audiobook through Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this review and all opinions expressed herein are mine.

Here, Watson is concerned that Sherlock, in his boredom, will return to using narcotics to stimulate his mind. He and Inspector Lestrade try to divert Sherlock's attention with a series of cases. The first five cases are quick and then more time is spent on the last case. The entire story is told from the point of view of Watson.

The first quick cases were okay but I thought a bit pedestrian for someone of Sherlock's intellect. However, it is the longer case which I really enjoyed. Overall, I really liked the writing style of this book - it is a bit formal but certainly encompasses the feel of the original Sherlock stories by Doyle. Sherlock is certainly his snarky superior self, who others, at times, endure but mostly love. And, of course, Watson is frequently flustered by his failure to have observed or surmised that which Sherlock could in the briefest of glances. But, that is all part of the fun.

I listened to this book - I found the narrator to be engaging. I did not notice any audio problems mentioned by other reviewers.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The beginning of this can be hard to follow. Many times I had to remind myself that Dr Watson is narrating. Joff did a good job reading this book but many times I could not tell what character was talking as there was not a distinguishing voice change. They story was still great and I do recommend this book.

A quality pastiche. A set of short stories followed by a somewhat longer mystery. The framing of the short stories as an effort to provide a bored Holmes distraction over a single week was a clever device. I especially enjoyed the lost cat case Holmes didn’t even leave his bedroom to solve. The titular mystery proved to have a clever and satisfying solution. In classic Doyle fashion the audience is left guessing until the very end and once we learn all the facts it’s simplicity itself. Recommend.

Several tales that shows Sherlock Homes and Doctor Watson solving various crimes, even without leaving their rooms. The Pigtail Twist, being an exception that becomes quite the adventure.
