Bambino e adolescente sensibile e introverso, Thomas sembra condannato a perdere tutte le persone che gli sono care: la donna che l'ha cresciuto, la madre, il primo amore, gli amici, mentre il rapporto con il padre s'incrina fino a spezzarsi. Appena l'età glielo permette fugge di casa per arruolarsi nei Royal Marines: quindici anni di teatri di guerra, dall'Irlanda del Nord all'Iraq, dove inciampa continuamente nella morte e sempre sopravvive, al punto da diventare un caso mediatico. A un soffio dalla ricchezza e dal potere, nella sua innocenza di eterno idealista Thomas sceglie di restare se stesso, e perciò perde di nuovo tutto. È a questo punto che accetta l'incarico di cercare una persona scomparsa in India: proprio là, dove tutto è cominciato e dove tutto, in un finale mozzafiato, può ricominciare.

About the author

Jean-Michel Guenassia est un écrivain français, né en 1950 à Alger. Son roman Le Club des incorrigibles optimistes a obtenu le Prix Goncourt des lycéens en novembre 2009.

Avocat pendant six ans, Jean-Michel Guenassia vit de sa plume en écrivant des scénarios pour la télévision. Il publie un roman policier en 1986, Pour cent millions (éditions Liana Lévi, prix Michel-Lebrun), dont il dit « Je ne le renie pas,... mais je n'ai pas donné suite, il me fallait autre chose », puis fait jouer quelques pièces de théâtre, notamment Grand, beau, fort, avec des yeux noirs brûlants..., en 2008 à Avignon. Son éditeur Albin Michel présente cependant Le Club des incorrigibles optimistes publié en 2009 comme le premier roman d'un inconnu de 59 ans.

En 2012, il publie un second roman, La Vie rêvée d'Ernesto G.

I am VERY annoyed because the first 2/3 of the book were so good (i love the first descriptions of Delhi and London) and them the last chapter (achilles’ heel) was just a horrible melange of all the dumb cliches you can fit into a book. in my opinion. Would give this 3.5/5

la première partie était vraiment intrigante & pouvait mener super loin mais la tonalité à radicalement changée et c'est devenu boring
j'avais été conquise par son premier roman mais légèrement déçue des suivants

dans Trompe-la-mort, on suit le jeune Tom de New Delhis à Londres, dans l'incompréhension & la colère puis on le voit grandir et évoluer (fantastique partie). Puis, il entre dans le corps militaire & les détails deviennent incohérents, les histoires rocambolesques, les personnages pleins de contradictions!

Tout d'abord je tiens à dire que je suis très heureuse d'avoir trouver cette auteur !
Je suis passer part plusieurs émotions intense !
Quel dommage de pas avoir autant de temps pour lire ,car je me suis prise vraiment à vivre ce Thomas à vécu où ressentie.
Les personnages qui l'accompagnent sont vraiment stupéfiant ai d'une grande partie riche de personnalités .
Une histoire vraiment bien raconter et fine d'écriture tout au long qui vous apporte à tourner les pages encore et encore malgré que le fatigue vienne au yeux !
Honnêtement je recommande vivement ce livre à la curiosité de tout bon lecteur qui aime voyager .
Merci vraiment à Jean-Michel Guenassia de m'avoir emporter dans ce monde et voyager dans tout ai endroits ! Cécilia

Lo confesso, non sono rimasto colpito.
Il libro parte benissimo, e la qualità della scrittura di Guenassia è notevole. In particolare, mi piace la voce della sua scrittura, questo suo scrivere in prima persona con uno stile perfetto per la personalità del protagonista.
Ciò che manca, a mio avviso (o comunque ciò che non mi ha convinto del tutto), è una certa organicità nella storia: sembra quasi che il libro inizi per raccontare qualcosa e finisca per parlare di altro.
Ad ogni buon conto, una chance di lettura la merita da parte di chi ama la buona scrittura.

D'habitude, j'aime vraiment bien les romans de cet auteur. Il est très original, et je suis surprise à chaque page. Là, j'ai été plutôt déçue. J'ai adoré le début, l'enfance et l'adolescence du héros, mais la suite m'a beaucoup moins convaincue. J'ai trouvé les personnages assez caricaturaux, plusieurs effets très prévisibles, et le tout manquant de finesse.

Zdá sa, že Tom sa necíti doma nikde. Ani v Indii, ani v Anglicku. Stvorila ho láska Indky a Brita, no nikto mu nepovedal, ako má s týmito dvomi kultúrnymi identitami zaobchádzať. Vie, že človek musí niekam patriť, a tak si hľadá vlastnú cestu. Prihlási sa do britského vojnového námorníctva a strávi tam roky. Avšak potom jeho kroky smerujú do civilu, a vtedy začína pravý život so všetkými jeho odtieňmi. Bude na to pripravený? Sám nevie, kam ho nohy zavedú, no z čitateľského pohľadu to je zaujímavá púť.

Aj keď som o tomto autorovi v živote nepočula, jeho štýl písania ma zaujal od prvej stránky. Napísal príbeh plný zvratov a prekvapení, a to zaručilo, že som napredovala šialeným tempom. Chcela som vedieť, čo bude ďalej. Kultúrne kontrasty, ktoré opisoval prostredníctvom hlavného protagonistu, boli pútavé a to som zbožňovala. Teraz vám asi napadne, že niečo som rada nemala. Boli to rýchle skoky v deji. Niekomu by možno mohol prekážať tiež otvorený koniec, no mne sa páčil. Ani život nie je nikdy ukončený (iba smrťou) a človek nevie, čo ho ešte čaká. Ale ten rýchly prelet dejom sa mi nezdal v poriadku. Myslela som, že aspoň posledná časť bude trošku spomalená, obšírnejšia. Nebola.

V závere ma prekvapilo ešte jedno zistenie. Ako čitateľka som bola informovaná o kľúčovej situácii, ktorá v príbehu nastala, no myslela som si, že o nej vie aj Tom. Na konci ma udivilo, že on si ju dobre nepamätal. Momentálne sa zamýšľam nad tým, či sme na to ako čitatelia nemali prísť neskôr a byť rovnako zmätení ako hlavná postava. Preto na mňa dielo pôsobí rozpačito. Síce oceňujem spojenie indického a britského pohľadu na svet a zvraty, ktoré sa diali, no kniha na niektorých miestach viditeľne pokrivkávala.

Dielo odporúčam tým, ktorí majú radi spoločenské romány, knihy plné akcie, skoky v deji, a neprekáža im, ak na konci zostane všetko otvorené. Môžete si z toho veľa domyslieť, to áno, ale nikdy neviete, akým smerom by to viedol autor.

Увлекательная история в духе детектива с элементами экшена, но концовка для меня одновременно стала и слащаво-слезливой, как сладкая вата после ливня, и одновременно калейдоскопом событий, которые с такой бешеной скоростью сменяли друг друга, что, перевернув последнюю страницу, я подумала, что это какая-то ошибка и недобросовестные издатели просто забыли «подшить» последние страниц двадцать романа; но нет, я сверила и с другими версиями-именно так все и заканчивается. Однако после прочтения книги у меня все же осталось жгучее чувство незавершенности, будто у меня украли что-то ценное-знание того, чем все закончится. Я даже разозлилась немного на Генассия-нельзя так поступать с читателями. Хотя, с другой стороны, все же в этом что-то есть, эдакая восточная перчинка...

I really enjoyed another one of his ' The Incorrigible Optimist's Club', this one was ok but didn't engage me as much. Loads of action and mention of the UK and India, I enjoyed the double lives of the Indians, you never really know who is baddie who is goodie, because, in life, you can be both. The title and reason for the title takes second fiddle to an international adventure and I failed to understand that this be held as premise for the book title. But all in all, a satisfying read.

Perfect writing. After reading four books from this author, it has become the standard for me. Another thing is the content of the book. There just isn’t a book better than Optimists so far. Here, the story has potential, but there’s just something missing. You can’t stop reading because of the writing style, and the whole time you are waiting for something — but it never comes. I don’t even know how many stars to give it.

Některé části jsou velmi dobře napsané, nutilo mě to číst dál a dál a co nejrychleji.Jiné pasáže ale byly slabší a hlavněmi přišlo, že myšlenky hlavního hrdiny si navzájem odporují - závěry, které učinil na základě toho, co si myslel, prostě nedávaly smysl. A to ubralo tu jednu hvězdičku, kterou bych jinak dala.

Tak dobre to začalo, namotala som sa na komplikovaný vzťah syna a otca, ale to, čo nasledovalo následne, bola za mňa slabá kombinácia detektívky, trileru a

Nie je to až tak žalostné ako Stoprocentní riziko od Guenassia, ale za mňa toto na 3 hviezdičky nie je.

Quel plaisir de retrouver la plume de Jean-Michel Guenassia ! Malheureusement, je n'ai pas été aussi séduite par ce roman que pour les précédents... J'ai aimé plonger dans le Delhi que redécouvre Tom par contre, je n'ai pas adhéré à son histoire : trop peu crédible à mon goût.

Questo libro è come le montagne russe, è un continuo scendere e salire. Non ho trovato l'intensità narrativa de "Il club degli incorreggibili ottimisti" o di "Terre promesse" ma è una storia che si fa' leggere eccome. L'ho letto in vacanza ed è stata una piacevole evasione.

Tom Larch est-il vraiment immortel ? Aucun être humain n'aurait pu survivre aux accidents dont il s'est tiré. A-t-il un secret qui le protège des coups du sort ? Ou un ange gardien qui veille sur lui ? Est-ce le hasard ou son instinct de vie qui lui permet de s'en sortir à chaque fois ? Obligé de quitter New Delhi pour Londres à huit ans, Tom est depuis toujours écartelé entre ses deux cultures. Celle de sa mère, indienne, et celle de son père, ingénieur anglais. A dix-huit ans, il s'engage dans les Royal Marines, et devient un héros, malgré lui. Rendu à la vie civile, il devra affronter ses propres démons quand l'un des hommes les plus riches du monde lui demandera d'aller en Inde à la recherche de son fils, que Tom est le seul à pouvoir retrouver.

Formidable conteur, Jean-Michel Guenassia nous entraîne à la suite de Tom Larch dont le destin se mêle aux tumultes de l'Histoire. Comme dans Le Club des incorrigibles optimistes, il convoque avec maestria dans ce roman magistral tout ce qui fait notre XXIe siècle.

Secondo romanzo letto di Guenassia dopo "Il club degli incorreggibili ottimisti" che avevo adorato. La storia scorre bene, sembra abbia applicato una lente d'ingrandimento sui personaggi: minori in numero, rispetto all'altro romanzo, e di conseguenza molto più approfonditi. La trama è avvincente, poiché scritta scorrevolmente e di ottima impaginatura, si lascia leggere bene soprattutto perché affronta temi (India, vita militare) per i quali non nutro un grande interesse. Pone un individuo nato in una cultura diversa da quella occidentale al centro del romanzo, con i suoi dubbi, le sue certezze e i suoi difetti: Guenassia riesce molto bene in questo compito. Non do la quinta stella perché il finale me lo aspettavo diverso, mi ha sorpreso, ma in negativo.

Comme toujours, l'écriture de Jean-Michel Guenassia nous emmène vivre une aventure riche en émotions. On se retrouve littéralement happé par son récit, et on suit avec intérêt Tom Larch à travers ses évolutions. On referme le livre en regrettant qu'il soit déjà fini.

I could not wait to read another book from Guenassia. And I was not disappointed.

The book is different that his former books, however not bad at all. I would prefer to be 100 pages longer than it is, to explain some things in more detail. Also the finish was very surprising for me.
