And in that very instant, they both saw a glimpse of their future together—they never wanted to be apart again.

It’s August, 79 A.D., in the city of Pompeii.

Angelus, 21, is at the market. He spots a gorgeous stranger who’s playing with a little black puppy.

He meets Marcus again—this time, in the thermal bathhouse.

Marcus is an orphan; he was taken in by the Senator. He eventually confesses the nature of his relationship with the powerful man.

Things develop between Marcus and Angelus…but this glosses over much of the guys’ relationship. Lots of Tell and very little Show.

One action scene. No lube. Not completely terrible, but weak on description.

Julia, Angelus’s mother, is a neat secondary character. Super supportive.

Earthquakes. Explosions. Heat. Ash.

Escape. Sorrento.

The ending is cool and sweet.

The author has a good premise here. Yet focusing too little on details makes this feel more like assembled plot points than a living, breathing story. A shame that this ends up being…mediocre.

“It’s ok, my angel…you’re safe…we’re all safe now.”

This is a short and sweet historical (ancient Pompeii) M/M romance. Since it is a short story, there is not a lot of set-up or plot and character development. There is a little danger and drama and some physical abuse by a secondary character. Mostly, it is the sweet story of two young men who meet and fall in love/lust, and the care and devotion they show to each other. It would make a great expanded story. There is a moderate heat factor and minimal angst.

I was given this ARC by BookSprout in exchange for an honest review.

So, I think 'erotic romance' is pushing the description. I don't read erotica, and I took a chance here and was glad I did. For a novella, there was plenty of storyline and it was interesting to see the relationships between Angelus and his mother, and then later with Marcus and Angelus's mother. It was quick and the writing was sharp and I felt like I learned something when I was done.
