Vengeance is a cold dish, and space is the best place to serve it.Betrayed by fellow pirates, the Nepenthe is heavily damaged and trapped in hostile territory. The practical thing to do is attempt an escape back to the neutral zones, where her crew can lick their wounds and count themselves lucky to fight another day.But their stalwart captain has other plans. He knows that if they let the renegades go, they stand to lose their reputation as the most fearsome raider outfit in known space. As the crew plans an elaborate revenge, they soon realize the true stakes revolve around a fabled lost artifact, one that could determine the fate of an entire star cluster.
After the entertaining Nephente Rising, I immediately started this one hoping for a continuation of the plotlines in that book, only for this to go in a completely different direction; while this was somewhat disappointing, the novel started really getting going after a while and I actually enjoyed this one as much as the first one in the end. Overall pretty much the same things are to be said (ok writing, less polished than in the author's latest novel, Duelist, which so far is still his best from what I read, energy carrying the plot, satisfying villains, excellent setting a good conclusion, a bit more definite than in the first book as the plot of this one goes)
I stopped at the 23% mark. I read the first book a whole ago. I thought it was OK but don't know why. The main characters as pirates can never end well. Between the murder, etc. that have to be part of their routine, there's too many reminders why I shouldn't be reading this story.
The young pirates are particularly depressing and the only way to make any of it palatable is to go totally Johnny Deppe. This is a weird POV for an adventure story. A story centered on pirate hunters or other anti-pirate forces is more interesting.
There's no need for me to judge the writing style or story elements, the pirates just don't work. I really don't understand how I got through the first book, shame on me.
One always wonders when book 2 of a series comes out, will it continue the adventure or be a rehash of book 1? Shards is a great addition to Stars in Shadow, this new adventure is fresh and not a direct continuation of book 1, but there is good continuity. New characters are introduced, and existing characters continue to evolve. A pirates life for me.
