"In a near future where all of humanity’s needs are administered by a godlike A.I., it’s one young woman’s horrible job to do tech support on it. But when Cassandra finds herself violently drawn into a hidden and deadly digital world beneath our own, she discovers a group of super-powered women and horrific monsters locked in a secret war for the cheat codes to reality."
It’s a no-brainer, really–this series has everything I love. Science fiction, strong female leads, bright colours with a gritty realism, intrigue, and cliffhangers. The dystopian world the story is set in is one that is easy to imagine in our foreseeable future. Adverts everywhere you look because you have nanotech in your eyeballs, a holographic AI popping up to tell you things, oh, and an entire digital world, pseudo-superheroes, and the monsters they fight. That last bit is less foreseeable.
A longer review of the series can be found at my book blog: Marvel at Words.
The exposition and dialogue are pretty clunky so far. It seems like they were trying to get alot of world building done in a small number of pages, which was definitely to its detriment. The art is great, and the setting seems promising, so hopefully it can find its voice in the next few issues.
Visually stunning. The various art styles and cool colour choices are rather impressive. There was a couple times (in the intro and the end), where it was a bit hard to understand what happened in certain panels, because of the mesh of unusual cyberpunk colour and pixelated backgrounds, but it just took more concentration on the art for a while to get it, then just glancing at it as you read.
Concept and story seem like it might be interesting. So far this issue primarily exposed up to a compelling futuristic setting, along side good character building for Ms. Price. On a minor note, some of the exposition felt a bit too forced at times, (primarily in one scene with Mr. Benson), but I can see that it was needed to explain this fantastical world and our main character in detail. So I don't have a problem with it.
All in all, this is quite an attractive world building issue that's been crafted. The setting is very intriguing and feels fleshed out. It'll be interesting to see what will be done with it.
When I saw the cover to this series I knew I was going to have to give it a try. It’s just so bright and well…different from everything else out there. Plus we all know I’m a total sucker for good covers. Sorry, but it’s the truth. It took me a few pages to really get into the series. It starts off with a lot of monologue…but all things considered that makes sense. They had a massive world to establish, as well as the character’s backstory and all the tech in the world. That’s not an easy task, so I’m will to let that bit slide. Once I settled into the plot I have to admit I was really curious about everything. I want to see more of the tech (and how it’s abused, as weird as that sounds), the people, the politics, everything. And then of course there’s the way this issue ended…it’s safe to say that I’ll be reading the next one!
First, the art is gorgeous. The first issue left me with a few questions, the kind of questions that keep me coming back. I also love the combination of tech and women, and the main character is one for whom I can sympathize. I'll definitely keep reading.
This is a slow and somewhat confusing start to the series that was pretty short. I was drawn in by the description but since not a lot happens in this issue I'm curious to see where the series goes.
interesting premise but i found the execution lackluster. its a super wordy issue with heavy world building, i guess thats what made it boring. still, the setting and plot show a lot of promise. on the fence about reading more.
Ok I like where this ones going! The Dystopian Sci-fi vibe its given me has totally makes me think things that happen in this comic might not be terribly far away.
Issue ones are weird to rate but the art in this book is insane and the story has potential so that's enough to keep me reading through the first arc. These new Vertigo books have been fire.
It's hard to say much based off of just 1 issue but it's off to a good start and I'm interested so far as to what kind of corporate conspiracy is going on.
Dope cover drew me in. The story is interesting, I love me some dystopian sci fi with some bad ass female leads. Looks like I have another series to continue.
