This long unavailable collection of poems by the most important American experimental poet of our time, was originally written on 3/5 cards as words and "action phrases" to be performed by such major experimental dancer-choreographers as Meredith Monk, Trisha Brown, Simone Forti, Kenneth King, and Fred Herko. The book includes photographs of an early (1965) performance, detailed explanatory texts by the poet, and his "They Manifesto," a scholarly justification for the use of the pronoun "they" in place of "he or she."
I need to see these poems danced because reading them on the page made me question my sanity...
Chicago representation! Mac Low's experimental bridge between physical movement and the written word is fascinating but seems more like a footnote for further experimentation rather than a monumental wonder in its own right. He was ahead of his time with writing "The 'They' Manifesto" in 1977, arguing for the use of the inclusive and less clunky "they" in texts rather than "he or she."
