Before I really get into the review, let me just say that I did enjoy reading this book. I adore poetry and it’s it’s hard to disappoint me with poetry. But with this book, even though I enjoyed it, it was rather simple. Almost more of a bunch of fortune cookies than a book of poetry. It’s a quick read and could be considered boring to some but I still liked it. It would be at the top of my recommendations but I still would recommend it.
I won this book in a giveaway. Some of the poems were powerful, others didn't move me as much, but I enjoyed the collection overall. It seems to me that the author has experienced some trauma. I like the resilience in her message-- "birds they keep singing no matter who has tried to silence them." Also, the cover was beautiful.
*I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.*
The majority of the poems in this book are deeply meaningful, and don't necessitate a PhD in literature to be able to comprehend them, which is always a win in my book. My favorite pieces were the darker ones--about loss and pain, but also about redemption and forgiveness. There were a few poems that fell flat, mostly the ones that were just two lines or 10-15 words. Overall, this is a solid collection. And bonus--look at that gorgeous cover!
Roses by Moonlight, by Nicola Mar, is a bittersweet poetry collection. Filled with the complexities of human experience, its free-verse poems speak to readers in beautiful, simplistic words. I read the collection from cover to cover in one evening, and then revisited it again the next.
Mar’s poems are inspirational yet heartbreaking; her writing uses the senses to describe the world and make sense of it - as well as to endure and ultimately, conquer pain. Some poems are a scant three lines - and with the longest just over a page, it isn’t surprising that Mar is a contemporary poet who has successfully used social media an outlet for her words. With this book, she opens her writing up to a wider audience and shows that even three lines on a long, blank page can impact the reader immensely, making them stop and pause for breath. And isn’t that what poetry is designed to do? In the small cracks of silence between the words, can poetry open up our minds & hearts, causing us to feel another’s experience authentically? I believe Mar would agree with me when I say fervently - Yes!
Contemporary poets of today are not afraid to show us pain and suffering. But equally as important is the love that remains within us and around us, and Mar aptly titles this collection to show the beauty blooming in the darkness - the light that shines among the thorns.
I won this ebook in a Goodreads giveaway. In the past, when I've tried to read poetry I have felt overwhelmed and confused. Roses by Moonlight is a good collection to read if you are new to poetry as I am. I was able to follow the poems with the simplicity of words while at the same time experiencing the emotions intended. I recommend Roses by Moonlight to poetry newbies and those that may be experiencing relational complexities or just a reminder to love yourself. Uplifting and thoughtful writing.
I read through incredibly fast. Most of the topics weren’t up to my tea, and I couldn’t seem to identify a strong central theme of any kind, nor did I find the writing memorable. My favorite poems and pieces of writing tend to be of this that i can relate to with my soul snd heart. My favorite poems tend to evoke strong emotion in me and i did not find myself feeling that towards the topics.
I did like this short poem though: “let love be your north star.“
And: “ the bird does not romance the flower that is sour-it simply goes to the one that is sweet.“
I received this book as a gift. I might recommend it to someone going through a breakup. It is very much in the style of short napkin poems that you might hear at a small town coffeehouse open mic. Another term for that might be “instagram poet”, which is similar to “SoundCloud rapper”. Is the book awful? No. Is it “raw emotion” and filled with illusions to nature? No. Three stars because I really like the cover.
A student lent me this book, and while it's not at all bad, it just did nothing for me. The poems were a little too simplistic, and many of them felt like poems she wrote after a high school relationship ended.
I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who would enjoy this one, but for me, it just didn't stick.
A very emotional work. Nicola's use of simple words to provoke such strong emotions moved me. I felt all the emotions that she was evoking with her words. I would recommend this volume of poetry fro anyone needing to feel that they are not the only ones going through pain of life.
Roses by Moonlight by Nicola Mar – This was an Amazon freebie. I bet it would make a lovely, guided meditation with the right audiobook narrator! I enjoyed it! Happy Reading!
