This is a very good and informative book about the sun and its many health benefits. It challenges numerous myths, including the claim that sunlight is responsible for most cases of malignant melanoma. It also demonstrates that sunscreen is not the miracle product we are promised it is, and that, contrary to modern perceptions, the sun is something we truly ought to embrace—although, as the authors repeatedly emphasize, without getting sunburned.

The book is packed with references to research and scientific literature, and it challenges billion-dollar industries that launch campaigns vilifying the sun and sun exposure. The authors demonstrate clearly how important sunlight is in preventing numerous diseases and how avoiding it may prove life-threatening. Although the book devotes some attention to vitamin D, it focuses just as much on the sun’s other benefits, such as the production of nitric oxide, serotonin, dopamine, and other feel-good hormones, as well as the sense of well-being and the many other processes activated in the body during sun exposure. We also learn how sunlight lowers blood pressure and may have a healing effect on many diseases. Yes, the sun truly is a wonder medicine.

The book does have a couple of drawbacks. One is its somewhat misguided dietary advice, particularly its claims that red meat is unhealthy, for which it cites some very weak studies. It also promotes whole grains and similar foods as things we ought to eat. On the other hand, it does discuss the harmful effects that vegetable oils may have on the skin during sun exposure.

The other drawback is not particularly serious, but it can make the book feel somewhat tedious at times. It lists a great number of diseases that sunlight may positively affect or heal, complete with research and supporting details. After a while, it becomes rather predictable: sun exposure is the answer! One might call this a luxury problem, and the real challenge is making all these sections engaging. Sometimes the authors succeed; at other times, they do not. The book can also be a bit repetitive.

All in all, this is a truly excellent book about the sun!

I recommend everyone give this book a chance. This book goes over a variety of studies that actually shows how important the sun is for your health. We’ve been lied to and tricked into thinking the sun is bad so that we lather our skin up with sunscreen filled with chemicals that’s actually harming us.
