After discovering Christine Brae's writing in 2016, I have been a huge fan of her work, blog posts, and simply her as a person. I've eagerly been awaiting the release of Eight Goodbyes for more than two years and I'm positively pleased to say it was well worth every moment of waiting. Christine's writing continues to get better with each release, making me always eager to see what she'll come up with next.
I wish I could bottle up the feelings this novel gave me to revisit constantly. Though this is a seemingly simple story about two lovers making their own rules for their relationship, it dives even further by conveying important messages about life and love. Simply, we must make the most of our lives and there is no time to waste on pride, selfishness, or anything besides loving those who are closest to us. As usual, Christine's writing cuts right to the core, making me feel every word and evaluate my own life. I questioned whether I was living each moment as if it were precious and whether I was actively loving those dear to me in the way they deserved to be.
I have to give major kudos regarding many aspects of this novel, the main one being the characters. I simply cannot choose a favorite! Initially, I loved Simon and couldn't wait for a bit of cheer to find its way to his life. He was deep, brooding, and intellectual, while carrying a sadness I was eager to understand. There are many layers to his character that take time to unearth, making him endlessly interesting. Obviously, as a huge Anglophile, I adored that he was a Brit. At times he emulated the witty and sarcastic humor of the English I have grown to love.
Tessa reminded me of myself more than almost any character I have ever read before, personality-wise. Her life has been trying, she's lost people close to her and feels reluctant to be vulnerable again. Her inability to voice her feelings to those she cares about was like looking in a mirror. As a romance novelist, it's easy to put the words on paper to create stories people can't help but grasp ahold of with their hearts, but verbalizing love feels like visiting another planet. Instead, she builds walls around her heart and chases the world's beauty to every corner of the Earth, never settling down.
Not only were the main characters of this novel outstanding and relatable, the secondary characters felt like real-life friends or family. I formed an attachment to each one for different reasons and enjoyed reading about their interactions and lives as much as those of Tessa and Simon. One chance encounter between Tessa and a woman named Millie was one of my favorite moments of the entire book!
Christine's writing never fails to disappoint in being descriptive and making me feel as if I am traveling the world with her characters. Many authors can't walk the fine line of showing their readers what they want them to see, without mundanely describing every detail in a flat and boring manner - not here, my friends! As a traveling businesswoman herself, Christine has real-world experience visiting many of the places described in her novel, allowing every location to come alive. I couldn't wait to see where the characters would venture next.
Along with detailed descriptions, I appreciated how incredibly unpredictable the story was, something that is not easily achieved in the romance novels of today. As an avid reader, it oftentimes seems as if every romantic story has been written already. I couldn't be more relieved to have been proven wrong this time! There was never a moment in the story where I could have properly guessed what events might happen next, despite the title hinting at the possibility. It seems unlikely the characters could say eight goodbyes during their love with the story remaining exciting, but again, Christine was able to manage it effortlessly. At one point there was a twist that made me go back and read three times to make certain I was truly understanding what was happening. I had to set my Kindle down and contemplate the extent of the moment!
Eight Goodbyes is not only a heartwrenching story of two people navigating the globe, their love, and their personal lives, it's unputdownable, exciting, and unpredictable to the very last page. I hope everyone will pick this beautiful story upon its release this fall. If you've yet to read a book by Christine Brae, you are sorely missing out.

Thanks Ashley for this book recommendation. I really enjoyed this story and discovering a new author.
This book had an immediate pace that was steady throughout. I read this in one sitting.
This is a story of two people whose busy lives intersect on a flight. Simon and Tessa are moving upwards with their careers and can't decide if their attraction is meant for long term. But, the more they are together, the more they don't want to stay apart and begin to make plans for their future. The story has a twist and I won't spoil this because this is not a light read. Once you're blindsided with the twist, you are so invested with all of the characters and you're depleted with emotion. Yes, this story has a lot of feels and worthy of five stars. While this is my first book from this author, I look forward to more.

Eight Goodbyes is a gripping wild ride from page one to the end.
The author has written a sweet and emotional story which revolves around Simon and Tessa who fall in love while traveling. Although love wasn’t their plan, they didn’t seem to mind. Even though, their minds told them it couldn’t be anything serious, it felt right so they just did it and enjoyed it for whatever it was.
Both characters are easy to like and love. This book will wrap you up into their world. How they meet and separate, how they meet again and how their relationship grows and changes...and then the plot twists that completely changed the life of both of them.
This was an enjoyable and easy read and I recommend for anyone who likes romance novels.

Eight Goodbyes is a contemporary romance about two characters who are the complete opposite. Tessa is a free spirited romance writer. Simon is a scientist, who is organized and very focused. Normally, the chances that these two would come in contact would be pretty slim. However, I loved how they met and how dedicated Simon was from the start. Tessa didn't make it easy for Simon, but he was very persistent, and that was a very attractive trait. They inspired one another to do things that they normally would never think of doing. I loved that they met in places around the world, it added an extra romantic layer to the story. Because of their different priorities that wouldn't really work together, they say goodbye after each meeting. There are no promises.
"I'd follow you anywhere in the world."
However, after each meeting their feelings for each other grows. It especially becomes really difficult for Simon to say goodbye each time. Tessa, is scared to take the next step with Simon. But eventually she'll have to make a decision. There were times that I was mad at Tessa for being indecisive, however, I understood why she was hesitant. I loved Simon for not giving up, the dedication this guy showed was amazing. Overall, this story was really beautiful and I enjoyed the first half of the story immensely. However, the second half was very unexpected and I felt like the author rushed through the story. Things started happening really fast, and I wanted it to slow down so I could savor the story more. One very significant event results into their separation and the author skips into the future, however I would've loved for the author to continue the story a bit more to show what happened. On the other hand I can understand why the author wanted to keep the reader a bit in the dark, have them guessing. This story was romantic, sweet, and very emotional at times. I am looking forward to reading more books by Christine Brae.

They say opposites attract and with Eight Goodbyes' Tessa and Simon that is definitely the case. He's a smart, sensitive scientist and businessman, while she's best described as having her heads in the clouds. As an author Tessa is afforded the ability to travel the world, giving in to the words in her head whenever she wants and keeping everyone at arm's length. Simon, though, is persistent in winning her over and as they meet up in various locations all over the world she begins to find comfort in the consistency. They say goodbye each time, there's no promise of the future, no plan, until one day finally Tessa gives in and offers Simon everything. Life though, like love, is unpredictable and the two are set on different paths.
"Take me to the stars with you."
Oh my, the first half of this novel I cringed at each goodbye, hoping the pair would find a way to be together and yet still be their individual selves. I liked both main characters, connecting with Simon's clean way and formula style thinking and envying Tessa's ability to hop around the world embracing every new experience, though I wasn't quite a fan of her arrogance. They changed each other with each meeting, each evolving into a new version of themselves, though they seem to already fit perfectly together. Tessa gradually becomes less flippant about life and Simon becomes less rigid, more open to the unknown. We only get glimpses of their time together, relatively unaware of what goes on when they are apart. We see Tessa with new walls built around her each time they meet, unable to shake the loss from her life. Simon, on the other hand, wields emotions like a sword, working Tessa's walls down and learning to embrace her adventurous side. He keeps secrets from her though and I struggled with how much he asked of her while still not giving all of himself. Their vulnerabilities seem to be something that both attracts them to one another and pushes them apart. Finally though we see them embrace this unknown, this love, only to watch it shatter. It's difficult, the struggles they continue to face are hard, but it is realistic and Christine Brae takes you on a journey of loss, love, and rediscovery.

There is an event in this book that is a topic I currently avoid, so when I got to that scene I set aside the book and pondered how I felt about reading about something that I had a similar experience with. I wasn't sure I'd go back in, but Simon and Tessa called to me and with a bit of apprehension I started reading again. Christine Brae deals with the topic delicately, similar to how she writes about sex, she skims the actual events, leaving us with the character's emotions and the aftermath. I found it really interesting how the timeline of the book skipped ahead after the event, revealing that the characters are still reeling from the event though their lives have moved forward. I appreciated how Christine Brae worked through the emotions with the characters, showing each having done something different. It was unpredictable and there were certainly some twists that I loved and some I hated, much like how I feel about real life sometimes.
"Up to then, the details are murky. How she let him go, how he let her go."
Eight Goodbyes is a romance novel that takes you on a journey, embracing all that life has to offer, the beautiful and the painful. Christine Brae has a lyrical writing style and while it isn't for everyone I think it worked well for this type of story. For me, this book was reminiscent of One Day by David Nichols, with the characters going about life and meeting briefly, and I generally enjoyed the unknown even if the characters didn't. I loved the various settings and the character growth Tessa and Simon go through as they discover what love is together. I absolutely recommend this novel, if anything read it just for Simon who is obviously in the running for Book Boyfriend of the year.

Where do I even begin with this book?? Honestly. Do you ever start a book and just KNOW it’s going to be a good one? That’s how I felt with this book. From the very first paragraph, there was something different about 8 Goodbyes. The tone that the author writes in, the way that the characters are REAL people with real flaws, the humor that is dispersed throughout...it all is wrapped up with a great big red bow. (Haha, I amuse myself. Read the book, you’ll understand)
I have so many spots highlighted in this book. From little quirky things like, “....the only thing she could see past the older man, who had now removed his shoes...” (barf) to zingers like, “...life just passes you by when you’re lonely. You fill your days with contentment. Tasks, goals and bouts of staring, sitting, contemplating.....”and romantic, gushy moments like, “...she handed him her phone and he typed his name into her contacts list. He sucked in a breath before congratulating himself for winning the lottery...” I feel like -I- won the lottery for getting to read this story.
I realize that I’m not the typical romance reader. I don’t long for graphic, vulgar sex scenes. In fact, I tend to skim over those completely. There was no skimming with this book. Not a single word. I wanted to keep Tessa and Simon (and Riley and Jacob and even Revete) with me at all times. Every detail in this book was included for a reason and I love the way that certain things kept making appearances. There were times that i just wanted to shake Tessa but, sister redeems herself, by leaps and bounds. This book was written for readers with a passion for reading. It’s a book for people who are actual grown ups. People who live in a world with responsibilities. Not some fantasy world where you have sex all day long for weeks on end. These characters will suck you in and you’ll feel as if you’re part of their story. I did anyway.

Eight Goodbyes is an unpredictable and beautifully written story. It is as heart wrenching as it is heart warming.
The way the characters navigate their feelings, their losses, their vulnerabilities, as they travel across the globe. It captivated me and with each turn of the page I was more emotionally attuned to the words that passed by me.
My emotions flowed freely as I read this beautiful and descriptive tale. From tears free falling to my heart soaring, I was taken on a journey of two souls chasing each other to the four corners of the world.
The characters you encounter in this book all have a point and a integral moment in the book, when they are needed the moment is poignant. The main characters and their depiction and personal development throughout the story is beautiful to watch.
From Simon, with his vulnerabilities and sadness that as the layers are uncovered makes him more interesting and hard not to fall for, he is brooding, British, intellectual and has a gorgeous soul that soars with such an elegant touch that makes you as the reader reach out and feel everything he does as he grabs your heart and doesn’t let go !

Every part of this story is told beautifully and there are moments that are so thoughtfully and carefully put together you feel engaged and your attention is truly plastered to the page.
I rarely read romance books written in the third person as I find them so very difficult to relate and find a connection with, but this book was able to do what other books couldn’t.
I failed to recognise that it was written in the third and this story floored me, and from the moment I saw the first word to the last I was submerged, only realising when I had a chance to catch my breath !
I fell into this story so easily, and loved how the pace flowed effortlessly, as I was taken on an emotional journey as if I was there, it is simply perfect.
From an Author whose writing is as generous with her words as she is in life ! I implore you on its release to read this book, I promise you won’t be disappointed

The way the characters navigate their feelings, their losses, their vulnerabilities, as they travel across the globe. It captivated me and with each turn of the page I was more emotionally attuned to the words that passed by me.
My emotions flowed freely as I read this beautiful and descriptive tale. From tears free falling to my heart soaring, I was taken on a journey of two souls chasing each other to the four corners of the world.
The characters you encounter in this book all have a point and a integral moment in the book, when they are needed the moment is poignant. The main characters and their depiction and personal development throughout the story is beautiful to watch.
From Simon, with his vulnerabilities and sadness that as the layers are uncovered makes him more interesting and hard not to fall for, he is brooding, British, intellectual and has a gorgeous soul that soars with such an elegant touch that makes you as the reader reach out and feel everything he does as he grabs your heart and doesn’t let go !

What a writer! What a love story!
Requirements for reading Eight Goodbyes are lots of wine and tissues. Somebody couldn’t warned me, but it wouldn’t have mattered, I still would’ve taken the plunge. This book cut through the deepest part of me! Two people meet on a plane, and their lives literally change forever. I loved Simon so much! A Scientist on his way to a convention, meets Tessa, an author, and his life gets altered forever. He was in seat 7A, and she was in 7C. It was literally love at first sight for him. He watched her while she slept.
Tessa Talman is a no nonsense career woman who doesn’t have time for commitment and lives in the moment. Her writing career is her sole focus and I love watching that shift for her bit by bit.
My heart was swept away as I watched their love story evolve. They traveled from place to place meeting up in this state, and that country. Each goodbye getting harder and harder. Eight Goodbyes.
There are some things that I absolutely can not spoil, but they aren’t for the faint at heart.

To say Eight Goodbyes is a gem of a read would be putting it mildly. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough and even after finishing it, I had an unappeasable urge to reread which I might add, I did. Narrated in third person, the book’s structural framework is an unusual one as it’s split into eight goodbyes, chapters included and in three parts. What really caught my attention was the female protagonist’s growth throughout the book. It’s a very character and plot-driven novel, the different sections highlighting a distinct change in a relationship that appears to be ill-fated from the start. Passions didn't quite seem to coincide and made me constantly question if the one who loved unconditionally deserved so many goodbyes, their steadfast commitment to conquer all the setbacks literally left me reeling.
“I have this insatiable need to know everything about you. Maybe it’s the scientist in me. I want to be able to figure you out,”
Time is an equally important element in the story’s different settings as you will see. Also, Brae aroused my suspicions by insinuating something ominous was brewing on the horizon. Those very same subtle snippets completely threw my thoughts off kilter. Clutching at straws, I prayed a love that has its boundaries, timezones and crossed countries, would have a chance to flower. She took me on Simon and Tessa’s emotional journey to beautifully described spots around the world, some I’ve been to and others are on my bucket list.
“Next steps scare me.”
I openly admit that I wasn’t too keen on Tessa’s stance in the first part. Her stubbornness and selfishness caused me to say a few choice words to myself which I’d rather not repeat. I wanted her to be on Simons’s wavelength, to be honest with herself, look hard at what she’d achieved, its worth and handle her restlessness differently. However, learning about her past, what she’d been through and how she’d coped eventually helped me connect to her. Then, when the tough got going, I fell head over heels for her. I’d like to mention that if it weren’t for Brae’s par excellence character development regarding Tessa, I wouldn’t have changed my opinion so easily.
“I’m sorry. You must know more and more, I die with every goodbye. It used to be okay. It used to be easy to separate you, keep you in a different section from the rest of my life. Now, all I want is for you to be in it.”
Simon Fremont. Ambitious, seriously nerdy in his field with a fabulous sense of humour verging on sarcasm, is a gorgeously lovable Brit and from my adopted town in Essex to boot! Coincidences and jokes aside, us Brits do have a unique wit and his softened even the hardest moments. It baffled me at times since he has a grave problem and knowing full well his plans weren’t to be rushed, he manoeuvres carefully, always with his heart in Tessa’s hands. And tick tock...the clock won’t stop…does his patience and love have a limit? Will his tolerance fade and will time run out for both of them?
“I know if I push too hard, I’ll lose you. I’m going to give you time to figure it out. Don’t take too long…”
I honestly couldn’t find fault with Simon, whereas Tessa, well...hers aren't exactly faults per se but what she has on her plate does tend to stand out and certainly consumed me. On reflection, there were times I felt I wasn't being totally fair to this writer of romance novels who’s trying to find her purpose in life, so please don’t be put off by her. I disliked her demanding literary agent and the influence she had over Tessa irritated me no end. And Andrew...hmm, wasn’t too keen on him either. On the whole, the secondary characters are a very likable bunch, especially Tessa’s brother and his girlfriend.
“Live is short, we have to make the most of it.”
Details. I recently read a book where the pace of the narrative was stunted by overuse. I lost interest because I found them immaterial. This is most definitely not the case in Eight Goodbyes. Brae’s offering is as such that I couldn’t help but cry out for more, so much so I did an all-nighter and believe me, this book isn’t an easy one in the respect that I spent a lot of the dark hours sobbing into my pillow. The storyline. In all its originality and a ginormous twist I never in a million years saw coming, the author gave me hope and made me realise every precious moment in our life is worth cherishing. Her magical penmanship has given this standalone a real-life feel and undoubtedly while you're reading, all the emotions will seduce you. Embrace them and every single moment of this love story. You won't ever regret it. Bravo Brae! Bravo Brae!

This story had so much potential that I couldn’t wait to read it based on the synopsis. The cover image gave it such an ethereal feel and the quote made my heart sigh. I breezed through the first few chapters, anticipating the growing romance between two people who could not have been more opposite. I persevered through the next portion of the book, sure that so many glowing reviews could not be wrong. And I finished the book in disappointment that the story never panned out the way I had anticipated, hoped, or that such a great idea deserved.
The concept of the book was beautiful. Two people, fated to be together, but destined to keep saying goodbye. Tessa Talman was a new author, struggling with the obligations her sudden fame entailed. Simon was an intellectual, captivated on first sight with Tessa. These two were day and night from one another. Tessa was flighty and non-committal. Simon was precise and methodical. Life taught Tessa not to plan, while Simon was a fan of science and structure. Yet, Tessa forced Simon to spread his wings in order to chase after her after each goodbye.
My initial impression of Tessa was not a positive one. I felt that she was selfish and often cruel in her disregard for others. She played fast and loose with other people in an attempt to insulate herself, and it came across to me as insensitive and harsh. The way she behaved throughout the entire book, starting with her unforgivable actions when she and Simon first got together, all the way through to the secrets she kept from him, she was always only thinking of herself and her emotions. She had a man that loved her to distraction and was willing to follow her all over the globe to show how he felt about her. And she did nothing to reciprocate. I found her thoroughly unlikeable.
Simon on the other hand, was perfect. He was kind and loyal and deserved more than Tessa. It actually seemed to me that he spent the majority of the book in tears, and with the magnitude of the constant betrayals that Tessa inflicted, I couldn’t blame him.
This book was not for me. The concept was fantastic, the writing was lyrical, but the execution fell short and frankly left me feeling betrayed for getting invested in this relationship.

I spent 75% of this book absolutely despising Tessa and thinking Simon deserved so much more. She was selfish and self-serving, with little regard for how that affected Simon. So let me back it up a bit. Tessa is a suddenly famous writer and has had to immerse herself in the life of book tours, book signings, and a rather nomadic life with no ties. And that serves her well, as she is extremely commitment-phobic, in both life and relationships. Enter Simon, who has the misfortune (IMHO) of setting eyes on her and falling almost instantly. He loves her wanderlust and spirit and carefree ways. They are complete opposites. He's a nerdy, scientist type. Very organized and methodical. She just flies by the seat of her pants. The first 6 "goodbyes" just made me angry...because they were all her doing. "Her" plan. What "She" needed. But then came Goodbye #7 and from that point on, I had the urge to put my Kindle back in it's deserved spot - the freezer! Some of what happened from that point on was foreshadowed, easy to spot...but that doesn't make it any less impactful. I needed a little more depth in what happened between goodbye #7 and goodbye #8, but all in all, this was a pretty powerful story for me.

In Eight Goodbyes, Christine Brae has written an entertaining contemporary romance. Was it the best book I’ve read this year? No. However, it was perfectly fine for the niche that I think that the author was trying to fill. This a romance between Tessa Talman, and Simon Fremont. Much to her surprise, Tessa is a newly minted best-selling author. She’s on a publicity trip to New York City when she stands on Simon’s airplane seat, 7A, to put her bag in the overhead compartment. Simon is a bit gobsmacked by Tessa, and contrary to his normally self-contained personality, he chases her down in the baggage claim area. They eventually meet in New York City, after his scientific speaking engagement and her book signing event are both completed. While they part after sharing contact information, they leave with no commitments for further contact. That is the First Goodbye.
The story unfolds as Simon, who is British but living in Boston, follows Tessa’s lead and joins her in longer and longer journeys around the world. They meet in places like Las Vegas; Hong Kong; The Philippines; and Greece. Each time they meet, they struggle with the Goodbye. But in all fairness Simon seems to struggle more with the good-byes than free spirited Tessa does. However, both are hiding secrets from one another, and the effects of those secrets take a toll on the relationship.
Without giving the plot away, there is a harrowing event that happens along the way that changes the course of their relationship. The dramatic tension that arises after the event is to see if Tessa and Simon can resolve their individual issues and build a life together. I usually root for the underdog, so in this instance I was rooting for Simon. In one way, Tessa seemed a bit flip and arrogant to me, and in another she was wounded, and covering that up by her flip behavior. Simon while reserved, was willing to take more risks to move the relationship along, and to move out of his well-defined comfort zone.
Will they be able to craft a ‘Happily Ever After’, or will their individual situations be too much to overcome? Like I said, this was a solid contemporary romance for me. I would recommend it to my friends that are really into romance books, but I’d hesitate to recommend it to someone as a shining example of a great romance, if they weren’t already fond of the genre.

I have read this author’s books and I loved them all but so far this is my new favourite. A standalone romance written in third person, Simon and Tessa’s tale gave me my first book hangover of the year.
Simon Fremont is a scientist and on his way to a convention when he met Tessa on the aeroplane, he was in seat 7A she was in 7C. He is career driven, a really hot bloke with that British sense of humour the perfect hero in any book. His pursuit of Tessa was totally uncharacteristic, he was drawn to her like a magnet but surely it’s not love at first sight or is it?
Tessa Talman is a well known author who cannot get into committed relationships as her writing is her top priority. This heroine’s tunnel vision when it comes to her career made her so annoying most of the time. She has a good heart but guards it with twenty foot high walls.
What I have noticed about this author’s writing style is that her heroes are almost perfect and Simon is definitely one; his character comes off as fully evolved, mature and ready to take on the challenge of a budding relationship whilst Tessa was quite frustrating, her selfish attitude and her offhanded treatment of Simon made her an unlikeable person. But with each turning of the page you can see Tessa slowly chipping away at the walls she erected, she becomes more open and develops into a better person for Simon and his heart. This very well written narrative stirred up so many emotions from this reader. I felt the exhilaration every time Simon and Tessa meet up in different places around the world; these settings provided a picturesque and breathtaking canvas to their love story but when certain events happened in the book it shattered my heart into pieces. This book has a truly unique storyline with unforgettable people; the plot, the well developed characters and the stunning locations narrated in the author’s lyrical words make this book a five star read. Highly recommended but keep a box of tissues by your side because you are going to need it!

I have read earlier works from the same author, The Light in the Wound series and Insipid, it was absolutely an amazing experience for me. It has that touch that I look for every time I read her books. So, far hasn’t failed to break and warm my heart. And excitingly seeing Eight Goodbyes, her new novel, with nothing but a great experience from before, it simply sealed the deal.
Eight Goodbyes was completely different touch from the earlier works (obviously), I admit I had difficulty connecting with Tessa in the beginning. She struck me as a character that shouldn’t be telling her story but Simon. Then again, it was more than that. It really is hers to tell it was profoundly moving. When you hit off its momentum it flows on, oh, so grippingly poignant.
We have Tessa and Simon. Tessa a successful author who is currently going on a promotional tour for her newest book. And Simon a scientist who felt an instant attraction to Tessa. These two characters are completely opposite and their chemistry works. As I mentioned earlier I had a difficulty connecting with the MC and getting to know her more was really a pleasure than a chore. I grew inspired by her.
Inspired by moments that one should cherish every moment with the people around, may it be a friend, family, and lover. Life is unpredictable. A picture painted and captured candidly from reality. Surely Tessa is someone who’ll stick into you for a long while.
The story each unfolds as they meet in different places all over the world, which of course scream a whole lot of romantic gestures for both parties. There were moments I felt like invading even as I read. Both characters are adapting to what challenges they are facing. With each pulling decision, they take, is filled with rich soul binding joy and pain. Every time they meet, every after each meeting. Thoughts of where will this end? what is the endgame here? Are overwhelmingly present, it’ll make you grip on stronger each time. In the middle of it’ll strike and when it does it’ll leave you utterly breathless.
Eight Goodbyes was such an emotional whirlwind of finding that love, around you in the process of healing, no matter how long. Remembering up the past that had occurred beyond your control, accepting that even you deserve to be happy and be loved, and cherishing moments in life the biggest and the smallest one in life.
Eight Goodbyes was completely different touch from the earlier works (obviously), I admit I had difficulty connecting with Tessa in the beginning. She struck me as a character that shouldn’t be telling her story but Simon. Then again, it was more than that. It really is hers to tell it was profoundly moving. When you hit off its momentum it flows on, oh, so grippingly poignant.
We have Tessa and Simon. Tessa a successful author who is currently going on a promotional tour for her newest book. And Simon a scientist who felt an instant attraction to Tessa. These two characters are completely opposite and their chemistry works. As I mentioned earlier I had a difficulty connecting with the MC and getting to know her more was really a pleasure than a chore. I grew inspired by her.
Inspired by moments that one should cherish every moment with the people around, may it be a friend, family, and lover. Life is unpredictable. A picture painted and captured candidly from reality. Surely Tessa is someone who’ll stick into you for a long while.
The story each unfolds as they meet in different places all over the world, which of course scream a whole lot of romantic gestures for both parties. There were moments I felt like invading even as I read. Both characters are adapting to what challenges they are facing. With each pulling decision, they take, is filled with rich soul binding joy and pain. Every time they meet, every after each meeting. Thoughts of where will this end? what is the endgame here? Are overwhelmingly present, it’ll make you grip on stronger each time. In the middle of it’ll strike and when it does it’ll leave you utterly breathless.

I feel in love with Christine Brae writing with In This Life. So much so that I had to go back and read all her books.
I have been looking forward to reading Eight Goodbyes for about 2 years. I was fortunate to get a ARC on Friday.
Once I started reading I could not put the book down it was so good.
The characters are so real and the writing so real and relatable that I felt like I was there through out the story I could visualize the places like I was visiting with them.
I laughed and cried and was filled with wonder.
I always say a really good book will make you feel things and this went beyond my expectations. I felt many things.
I also come away with a lesson one I have learned the hard way this year, never take life for granted. Live and love like each day could be your last. Hold onto your loved ones. Cherish every day and every experience.

I really cannot describes my feelings right now. Christine’s words throw me on the edge and with that I cried my heart out!!! I loved every word and every sentence in this book. How can someone write so beautifully, is beyond my imagination!!! Your talent, vision and your creativity is so vivid that I couldn’t find myself to put the book down. With each book you wrote, you showed the world that there is so much more to this life than you believe in, you just have to search for it. I can’t wait to read your next book. Love you and will always support you.

I have so much love for this book. It is simple, yet exciting and exquisite. I thought nothing could overtake my love for In This Life, but Eight Goodbyes has done it. Tess and Simon are wonderfully rounded characters who have been brought to life through Christine’s words. If you want to travel this summer without going anywhere; if you want to get lost in Hong Kong, Las Vegas, or Paris from your couch; then this is a must read!

Ok, so I am not really sure how to write this review. I have really mixed feelings about this book, which is why I am stuck in the middle at 3 stars. Tessa and Simon’s story was different, I couldn’t wait to see where they would meet next and where things would take them. The jet setting and the unknown was romantic and refreshing. What I got hung up on was the clear differences between the two of them and the plot points that were either unnecessary or not elaborated on enough.
I had a difficult time connecting with Tessa at first, the “head-in-the-clouds romance author”. The romance world that we all know (the signings, the fans, the book boyfriends, the models) seem forced to me. Tessa was so hung up on her career and herself, it made it hard for me to really like her for awhile. Once she finally starts to revaluate her feelings, she became more likable to me.
Then there’s Simon. He is opposite from Tessa in EVERY way possible. I liked him a lot, but at the same time I also found him to be a bit annoying and even whiny at times. He’s so hung up on himself, his future - ok they are a little alike - his feelings. I don’t think he took enough time in the beginning to understand Tessa much at all. His feelings overtook his senses and he seemed to act irrationally now and then. Love can do crazy things but I felt like he actually deserved more than Tessa was giving him.
I also felt like many parts of the book were irrelevant to the story and weren’t really needed. We meet Tessa’s cover model (whom she is “close” with) and you would think it would be a HUGE bump in the road at some point and then it’s just kind of passed by. As a realist, the amount of travel was weird for me too. That she just happens to meet someone that can meet her wherever she is on a whim, giving in to her and just waiting for her to have a change of heart, change who she is.

It took me over two months to finish this book, and that is about 30 times as long as it takes me to finish most books. I just couldn't stop putting the book down and avoiding it at all costs. Here's why:
The book's blurb gave me the impression that the two main characters, Tessa and Simon, were meant to be together but life kept getting in the way. What I got was a selfish heroine with intimacy issues that consciously made poor decisions and a hero that went gaga stupid over a woman that simply didn't deserve him. With those two at the helm of this sinking romance, it's a wonder I finished the book at all.
The plot was promising, but the execution let me down. With two MCs that are supposed to have feelings for each other, the reader should want them to be together. I didn't. Simply because I felt like the author forced them together. Simon was all about Tessa from the beginning. Being in his head I was so convinced of his desire to learn more about her and wooed by his determination to get near her that I was completely caught off guard when it was learned that he was in a relationship and practically engaged.
Not so swoon-worthy now, huh?
A lot of reviewers seemed smitten with Simon - and yes, he was likable - and completely overlooked the fact that the main character HEAVILY pursued another woman out of infatuation despite having a partner waiting for him back home. It's obviously a personal preference, but I don’t find men like that desirable enough to star in my romantic fantasies/stories. And Tessa… she was obviously attracted to Simon, but so dismissive of his attention that their chemistry was purely one-sided. Her peak selfish moment was when she stood Simon up in Las Vegas and cemented my eternal dislike of her.
I don’t need insta-love by any means, but I needed more of a connection early on to even believe they would try to meet up again in the future. And since I wasn't convinced, I just felt like I was wasting my time with this book.

I was really intrigued by the concept of this book – two people from different parts of the world who meet, are attracted, and keep meeting up in different places around the world as they act on that attraction and get to know each other. It’s an interesting idea and a really fun set up, but this book took me by surprise in many ways. I have really mixed feelings about it, and am still sorting through the emotional rollercoaster that this story took me on, so please bear with me as I process.
Tessa is an American romance author who lives her life wild and free and who has struck gold with her first novel and just started a year-long book tour. Simon is a British scientist who is sensible, stable and down-to-earth. They meet when they are both travelling away from home and based in the same hotel – she for a book signing, he for a conference, and it all starts from there.
Over the following weeks and months they continue to meet up as Tessa’s travels take her around the world. But whereas she wants to keep things easy and commitment-free, Simon wants more.
There is some back and forth as they figure it all out, with Tessa doing her best to keep her distance. She has issues to overcome, but their relationship progresses naturally and easily despite her hesitance and their eventual fall is beautifully written with lots of emotion.
And then the story twists into a direction I was not expecting. It’s so shocking and so unexpected, that I had to stop and reread it again to make sure what was happening was actually happening. It’s a definite surprise, and it not only shifts the whole story, but also my feelings about what I was reading, giving the book a whole new dynamic.
I won’t say any more because I don’t want to spoil anything, but damn, this book messed with me, and I’m still struggling to figure out how I feel.
Firsty, I need to declare my love for Simon, because wow! He’s fun, sexy, sweet, and an absolute sweetheart. He’s open with how he feels, and he’s accepting of Tess and her feelings, and he absolutely won me over with his unapologetic love for her, and his patience, understanding and commitment.
And then there is Tessa, who I struggled to connect with. I didn’t particularly like her, and some of her actions and behaviours ticked me off – one incident in particular at the beginning of the book had me ‘WTF-ing’ out loud. But as her character developed throughout the book, she definitely grew on me.
I enjoyed their love story, I thought it was paced really well, with lots of emotion, and I could feel everything happen for them. And I loved the travel aspect and the exotic locations that serve as the background to their unfolding story.
My biggest issue is that it contains my number 1 pet peeve with books, which is usually an instant trigger for either a DNF or a complete disconnect . Uuuugghhhhhh. I hate it! I get that there are unusual circumstances in this one, but still… it’s not ok. And in a book where I had only just started liking the heroine, this certainly didn’t help. But I was invested enough (mostly in Simon) to finish the book and see how it would all play out, and though it’s an emotional rollercoaster, the story does end well.
It’s a hard book for me to rate. Had I known what was going to happen, I wouldn’t have read the story in the first place, but I did read it, and I could appreciate the writing, the emotion put into the book, and the beautiful, tumultuous love story. So I’m sticking in the middle with 3 stars.

This is my first time reading this author. I really liked Tessa and Simon. It was cool that Tessa is an author and she’s traveling all over for her book tour. They meet on a plane and there’s an instant connection. The bulk of the book is them meeting in different places all over the world so they could try and be together with the limited amount of time that they had. I did think there were some parts that dragged on a bit. It wasn’t until around the 68% mark where things got shook up and got really interesting. Overall this story is really well written, sweet and at times emotional. I’m glad that I got to read this. I’ll have to check out other books by this author.

This book is what romance and true love is all about. From the first page to the last page, I was in for the long haul. Tessa and Simon oozed passion, romance, heartache, and true love. With each passing goodbye; my heart broke a little bit more as well.
I loved that Simon would meet Tessa across the world to be with her. Even if it was just for a few days. I could feel the love grow deeper and deeper with each goodbye. Tessa found her love interest and hero from her romance books in Simon. Both of them broke out of their shells and experienced "life" when they were around each other. When tragedy struck, I almost cried out in anguish.
If you are looking for an amazing book to read, than, look no further than this book. This book will stick with you long after you have finished it.

They don't even speak but they are attracted to each other. Especially Simon.
They meet again by chance. And they decide to keep in touch. So they start planning some different meetings in different countries, since they are travelling due to their jobs.
At the beginning it was difficult for me to get involved in the story because I did't like Tessa. She is too afraid of commitment. And some of her actions are not very nice. Moreover, Simon is so cute, sweet and patient that it made me dislike her even more.
But I was really surprised how my opinion about her changed throughout the story. I began to understan her. The more I knew about her past, the more I saw where her behaviour was coming from.
And then, suddenly my heart broke. How much pain can a woman live through without giving up?
Some parts of this book are devastating.
It's the first time I have read a book from this author. I will read the rest. I promise. As soon as I move on from this one. And let me tell you, It won't be that easy.

Eight Goodbyes by Christine Brae was nice contemporary romance. Tessa is a successful romance author and she meets Simon on a plane. He is a scientist and the two start to keep in touch via Twitter and WhatsApp for a few months.
I liked both these characters. I enjoy books about books and writers, so Tessa’s character was easy to like. Simon is a good-looking scientist, what is not to like about that? I thought it was cute that he doesn’t do online anything, he doesn’t have Twitter or Facebook or WhatsApp but he gets these apps to be able to contact Tessa.
While I enjoyed Eight Goodbyes, the writing was good, the characters were well-developed and the storyline moved along nicely, I did have a few qualms with it. I know this is romance, but some of the dialogue was cheesy and I hate to say it, the story became a little overly dramatic for my tastes. The author wrote the PTSD in well and the extra drama I’m talking about has nothing to do with post-traumatic stress.
Although, I felt like there was alot of drama especially towards the end of the book it does all wrap up nicely and you get the HEA. The first half of the story was a little bit slow going but then the latter half was busier and I started to wonder if it would end with a cliffie but it didn’t.
So, overall, Eight Goodbyes was solid contemporary romance, a nice beach read if you don’t mind a little extra drama in the mix and a hero who wears his heart on his sleeve.

Before I start the review, I have to comment on the cover model was chosen - which I rarely ever do but for this book, there's just something about the cover model and his emotions, facial expressions that made me want to read the book and also made me worry that it was going to be one heck of an emotional ride. I loved this book, for those who don't know me, when it comes to true love and soulmates and fate and destiny - I soak it all up. The book starts off with a chance meeting on an airplane in seats 7A and 7C for Tessa and Simon. From the beginning, there is a connection and chemistry. The two of them though live busy lives which have them either traveling all over the world or holed up somewhere - an office for Tessa and a lab for Simon. This was the first goodbye. Over the next course of the novel, the pair strikes up a friendship which turns to long-distance relationship status and eventually seven goodbyes. The last goodbye was heartbreaking and was based on real events that occurred - the shooting of the restaurant in Paris. This part had my emotions flaring up as I was like nooooooooo, you can't do this to me. Then the book jumps to a few years later and we finally get a happy moment and a Yes moment, only to have our hearts stop beating as we await the outcomes in anticipation of what will happen next with our eighth goodbye. This is a book that will tug at your heartstrings in places but at the same time have you feeling frustrated at the characters especially Tessa. Eight Goodbyes is a book that is just as beautiful and captivating as it's cover.

Wow. That was.... something else. It’s not often anymore that a story line surprises the heck out of me, leaving my jaw hanging slack and pure despair knotted up in my tummy. Everything was going so swimmingly for the first half of the book- normal man/woman issues, but nothing out of the norm. Then SMACK. The universe shifts and throws you for a twist you never saw coming. That, and so much more is contained in this consuming and un-put-downable read.
Tessa is a renowned author that travels the world doing meet and greets with her adoring fans; Simon is an intellectual Englishman that meets Tessa aboard a plane on one fate- filled day. Their worlds continue to cross as they travel the globe, learning they need each other more than they ever thought possible. Life happens.... joys, tragedy, shared memories, family, opening one’s heart to love and pain alike... they’re all found within these pages. Pages that tore me apart, found healing, then tore me open again. A roller coaster of emotions to say the least. Just go read it, you won’t be disappointed.

Eight Goodbyes is a spectacular contemporary love story. I would dare say, one of the best that I've read in 2018.
Here we have a hero that is not only intelligent and good-looking, he's also flawed. He's not used to living life without a plan. He also has some health issues that affect his decision every single day, but no matter those and other details, he goes after who he wants as soon as he sees her.
The heroine is a strong, independent woman. An author that was touring the world because of the huge success of her first romance book. She was not ready for commitments, she was afraid of next steps in relationships, she was afraid, most of all, of losing the people she came to love.
These two characters meet in a very cute way but what makes this book different for me, is how much I rooted for Simon instead of Tessa. I'm an emotional reader but character-based stories are one of my favorites and this one... I fell in love, it broke my heard and glued it together again by the end.
I'm warning you, if you are an emotional person, have some Kleenex nearby. I certainly needed them because I cried like a baby from the climax of the story until the end of the book. I can say it was because of what happened but the truth is, I missed Simon for the couple of chapters his POV was not shown. That's how emotionally attached I got with him.
This book is a dual POV. We can see both sides and that makes the story so compelling. Tessa got on my nerves a couple of times, and Simon made me fell in love with him hard.
I really loved Eight Goodbyes and I would recommend it to everyone that love romances. This is one of those books that, in my opinion, you won't regret reading.

I finished reading this into the early hours and I’ve now found myself a little in awe of Christine Brae.
I wish I had the ability to articulate just how much I loved this book but I don’t want to give anything away!
It’s not often a book can make me ugly cry but this was most definitely one of them, this has such a punch, it hit me in all the feels. Front, row and centre.
I found myself invested and thought I knew exactly where this story was going. I had all these theories as I began reading, and so I started making notes. Although I was correct with some aspects, there is a twist even I didn’t see coming. Not until the very moment it happened. And let’s just say it sent me through the ringer.
The English-isms of Simon were bloody brilliant, being from England I couldn’t help but resonate with him and love his character.
Tessa is a writer and puts on a facade for the sake of her readers, and even her friends. Hiding her insecurities. But as the story evolves she really begins to come into her own, her true feelings surface and the tragedies of her past are revealed.
It’s important to live for the now, and love to the fullest. Learning new things and travelling to new cities is one way to do this. Another is to open your heart to meeting new people and let their lives change yours.
This is most definitely bookshelf worthy and I’ve added it to my paperback wish list.
