A prince is reunited with his people, and a sorcerer finds himself behind enemy lines. Old hatreds threaten as alliances and loyalties are tested. With the world at stake, a king must make a choice.
Vincent Avis writes mainly to get the characters in his head to quiet down. He lives in Minnesota, where he is owned by two cats and a dog. Vincent has a background in architecture, mental health, and writing, and is currently struggling to learn French. Ça va très mal.
Loved this just as much as Soul Storm (Dragoncrown #1)! I read them together, so most of what I wanted to say about the overarching story I covered in my first review. While Soul Storm spends much of its time in Samet's homeland/areas of expertise, True Names takes us into Ethan's world. Here, we encounter more traditional tales of medieval warfare, shifting alliances, and battles for control of the world. None of the triggering material from the first book makes a reappearance except in reference as Ethan explains the past two years to his family and tries to piece himself back together. My gripe from Soul Storm is more resolved here:
In particular, I really enjoyed how little details from the first part circled back to become relevant, such as ‘Broccoli.’ I think this shows a certain forward-thinking thoughtfulness from the author. There are a few chuckles sprinkled throughout this book to break up the seriousness, but Prelate Graham’s traumatized rant about a certain character (I don’t want to spoil it, but you’ll know the exact scene when you get there) is one of the funniest things I’ve read in awhile and had me laughing out loud at my Kindle. He definitely earns his ‘strong drink.’
I also enjoyed how a lot of the characters who briefly made appearances in the first book become their own in this one; the supporting ladies are great, strong, fun characters that avoid being pandering or trope-y. In the final arc of this book, there are even more characters to keep track of, but for the most part I think all the alliances and ties are described well so you can keep up with everyone and all the moving pieces.
There were a few more typos in this book than its predecessor, nothing horrible, but a couple missing words where you read something, think ‘wait a minute,’ and reread it to see what is missing from it.
As I said in my review of the first book, I was really happy with both Soul Storm and True Names, to the point that I bought actual copies of the books after I finished (initially borrowed via Kindle Unlimited, but I wanted to own these). I definitely intend to reread them, especially because all the little details make them ripe for a reread. This story is fantastic and I eagerly await the next part!
I liked this even more than the first one! Ethan and Samet are now in Ethan's kingdom where they struggle to stay together and prove that Samet isn't the enemy. The stakes have been upped in this book and I couldn't put it down!
I continue to love Ethan and Samet's relationship and I'm looking forward to continuing this series. I loved seeing Ethan become more playful in his banter with Samet, and more confident in his everyday actions.
This series is awesome. I love how the other characters react to Ethan and Samet's re!ationship. How it developed is so sweet. The action is believable. I like The strong female roles too. I can't wait for the third book.
