After nursing student Ryan Winters' apartment lease falls through just before the start of junior year, she's left scrambling for a place to live. And, growing tired of his self-imposed solitude, hockey captain Ethan Russell is looking for a roommate. Ryan moving into Ethan's luxe condo seems like the perfect solution to both of their dilemmas. The only catch? A smoldering sexual attraction that they both try to deny. All that Ryan wants is a place to live-- a place that isn't the dorms or her friend's couch. Still recovering from the aftermath of an ugly breakup, a relationship is the last thing on her mind. Besides, she'd never fall for a jockAll that Ethan wants is to focus on hockey and school-- without any dating, drama, or heartbreak. After getting third-degree burns from his last relationship, he's sworn off dating altogether. His life is back on track and he has control over things again. They both agree to keep their roommate arrangement platonic... with mixed results. Their friendship turns complicated when it turns out that you can't control everything, particularly chemistry that is too strong to ignore.
Avery Keelan is a sports romance & adult contemporary romance author who writes hot hockey heroes you'll swoon for.
Her stories contain happily ever afters with lovable characters, snarky banter, and enough steam to fog up a mirror. Plus, of course, a hefty dose of drama and angst along the way.
When not writing, she's spending time with her family, watching hockey (obviously), or enjoying the great Canadian outdoors.
I like it for a wattpad book I suppose, not that wattpad books aren't nice but you get my point!
Anyways so three things.
One. Wtf is Ethan's problem bro? He's whipped for Ryan ever since she moved in, so i felt like the restraint that he was showing was sooo overdramatic and unnecessary. Yeah it had the Alexis point of story but eh, not super convincing.
Two. What's with the weird cut off chapters? Like most chapters don't even tie together you know, it's like so detached.... The way time runs out from the start of the school year to Halloween, to thanksgiving to Christmas to New Year's Eve.... I didn't like that part.
Three. The ending.... Oh my god what the hell is wrong with the ending!? Was the author (I'm sorry Avery, ily but wtf is this) drunk or high while writing this? Was she so sick of her characters that she hit send before working on the last few chapters? The ending is just so.... I don't freaking know! It just caught me off guard. I was literally turning pages waiting for an epilogue, bonus chapter or even an ending line! Like bruh...
Okay now onto the good stuff
It's super fluffy and cute!
I like that Ethan and Ryan got to know each other nicely and became close as friends before moving on to more complicated titles.
The side characters are super good! Iz, Axel, Hunter.. Even Alexis for that matter who's Ethan's ex if you didn't know.
I like that this book is realistic to a level, the real struggles of college students.
You see that Alexis is far less crazier than other psychotic bitches in college sports romances, like geez those women (or men) should be featured on an episode of Criminal Minds fr
Ethan's mom is not dead (yay!) She's happy and healthy and has another family but still loves her baby a lot. Thank heavens she isn't a distressed momma since that gives a free leeway to hate the dad. Because I'm so sick of that trope... Not that I hate it, just saying.
And his dad isn't a total asshole. He's just worried about his son's choices in his own way... Though he could've been a better dad but hey I'm not judging.
Some iffy things:
The beginning also felt a little detached, as I mentioned before.
Also Ethan's recovery? Like bro that was awkward.... They were super weird with each other for no reason at all.
He was injured in a game, not dead. Smh.
Personally I felt like Ryan had a weird way of getting attached to people Like she was all over Ethan in a few chapters... But she still treated Iz as a good friend several chapters into the book, I mean duh she's supposed to be a best friend, you've said so yourself. What's up with that?
And Ethan is a complicated character... Not necessarily in a bad way, but just different.
So yeah all in all, it was good. I don't regret regret reading it, like beat myself up for reading it but not sooo happy about my decision either.
Then again my OCD ass doesn't let me DNF a book so I finished it, but it was good.
Hence the 3ish rating.
But 260 something pages and a sports romance... You've got nothing to lose anyway..
this is the first time ive disliked a romance book after the romance book finally romanced. the ending was pretty bad too. the beginning is good though which is what scored it 3. 3/5.
Not the author skipping over the smut scenes. We only got the tousled hair and messed up clothes version.
Don’t get me wrong I loved Ry and Ethan, the story had great potential in the beginning but I just didn’t like it as much as it progressed. I loved how we got lots of time with them as a couple, but where they were supposed to break up and like get back together didn’t really make this a good book. It was rushed, incredibly rushed. And the book’s transition from chapter to chapter ruined the flow for me.
As well as the ending it felt so rushed and it didn’t feel genuine, I liked the small jokes but everything else majorly seemed rushed.
This book was also weirdly sexist. Like how she pointed out she couldn’t cook all the goddamn time yet she did. And it was just weird, she wanted to be different.
There was a lot about the story I liked, but I found the writing style strange - it often felt like there were bits missing; the story started to drag and then WHAT is the deal with the ending? It felt like it just suddenly cut off in the middle with a bunch of chapters still to go and nothing resolved…
After all of the chemistry build up I also found it really frustrating that the intimate scenes were all closed door, that too just felt like big gaps in the story.
I liked Enforcer by this author but this one was really disappointing… not sure if I’ll give the others a go or not
I kind of expected more tbh...dont get me wrong, it was an amazing book, but for some reason I expected way more spicy scenes (and not the fade-to-black ones we got here) and I expected more emotional attachment to form between the reader and the characters...after I read Offside by Avery Keelan (which was a solid 5⭐️ read!!!) I had waaay to high expectations for this book...kinda disappointed...but it is still amazing and a book I would totally reccomend reading
I am surprised but I actually enjoyed the plot of this story. Actually, no. I am not surprised. I have read other books by Avery Keelan, and I have really enjoyed them, so I wasn't expecting to hate this book. I'm just surprised at how well the plot is. I have seen that Avery has 3 books from Wattpad, and I am assuming that these are her first endeavors in "professional" writing. Are there errors and typos? Yes. Does the story need to be worked a bit more? Yes. But it was already apparent that Avery was going to be a really good writer. Now that she has a publishing deal, I am hoping that she considers revisiting her Wattpad writings and works them a bit more to re-release them.
This is the story of Ryan Winters and Ethan Russell. Circumstances beyond Ryan's control meant that she was going into her junior year of college without accommodations and was facing the possibility of spending the year couch surfing. Luck would have it that a room becomes available in the penthouse of one of the buildings that she has been drooling over. The catch? The owner of said penthouse is fellow junior and hockey captain, Ethan Russell. Not that Ryan knows who Ethan is as she doesn't follow the school's sports team. There are mutual sparks but hooking up with your roommate is only inviting drama. Ethan does not need more drama after his break-up with his girlfriend, Alexis, the previous school year. He wants to keep his head down and focus only on hockey and schoolwork. School to appease his father and hockey to make sure he achieves his NHL dream. Ethan has been burned before by relationships...with his father, with his girlfriend, and with his friend. He isn't one to open up and let new people in. But Ryan worms her way into his heart, and soon, the attraction gets to be too much and becomes a distraction for him.
This was a slow-burn book as Ryan and Ethan took almost 60% of the book to finally confess their feelings for each other and act on their mutual attraction. The pining, the back and forth..it was great. I wish we had more scenes showcasing their growing friendship. The way they bonded over breakfast and decorating for holidays was cute. But I wish we could have seen how they hung out outside of their condo or how they shared movie nights at home, little moments of shared time together. We know it has happened because they say it towards the end of their flirtation period when they explain how their feelings grew for each other over time, but since we didn't actually witness it too much, it's hard to connect with those feelings. Also, if you are familiar with Avery's work, you know that the spice is there, and her MMC likes to talk dirty and be dominant. I think Avery was still a little shy when she wrote Breakaway. It's pretty much-closed door...no; I would say maybe a 1 spice. There is some talk about Ryan getting naked, Ethan loving her nipples...things like that. But the spice from her later books is not present in this one. If, no, WHEN this book gets re-written (I will manifest it into existence), it needs the spice.
My main issue with this book is the length. It started off with detail, explaining quite a few things, but then it started to rush through the story, and there was so much left out. Ethan is passionate about hockey but we don't see much of his hockey life. There is some mention of diet, workout regime, and practices in the beginning. We know that Ethan's head is out of the game for some time because he is distracted thinking about Ryan, but we don't get much information about the hockey games, the career, etc. It just stops being a talking point at some part of the book and becomes an afterthought. He even gets hurt for a second time during one of the playoff games with a concussion and there is no mention of that game or injury. We just found out that he is benched for the remainder of the season and that Ryan took care of him. Ryan is a nursing student doing her practitioner internship or whatever it is called. There is mention of her working at the hospital and being affected by the pediatric ward she works in but no real explanation of her aspirations or internship. Nor does it mention the hardship she could face if and when she runs into her ex-boyfriend during the internship. I need more storyline and insight into the family and friends of our main characters. Ethan has a wonderful relationship with his mother, yet we only meet her once briefly, and not much information is given about her. We get more information on his father...a relationship I want to know more about. Ryan is very close to her mother as well but hides the fact that she is living with a guy, and then eventually dating him. Not to mention that her mother kept her relationship secret from Ryan as well. I need more background information. Also...what was that with Ryan's father? I feel that it was just thrown in to add drama but then was forgotten about. And it was good potential drama. Elaborate on that storyline, please! This book needs another 150 pages or so...easily!
And then the friends. I loved Axel and Izzy's relationship. Oh my gosh! Avery, please, girl! Rewrite Breakaway and have that be book 1 of the series. Create a book with Axel and Izzy for the next book; I need Luca's post-breakup from Karissa, a Smith book, and a Geoff book. These were great characters. You can't leave me hanging. We need the entire series.
We get a lot of insight into Ethan's crazy ex, Alexis. In fact, I think there is another book on Wattpad by Avery called Dangle that involves Alexis, although she is not the FMC. It is the story of another teammate and ex-roommate of Ethan's. I won't say more as I have yet to read it and I want to. In fact, release Dangle and have it be a novella and #1.5 of the series.
Then there is one other book on Wattpad by Avery called On Tilt. I haven't read it yet but I don't think there is a connection to the other two books. However, I need it too.
When Ryan’s housing falls through just before the start of the college year, she is rushing to find somewhere to live. The pickings are thin this late but she manages to find a room within her budget that just so happens to be with the hockey captain, Ethan.
I just could not get into this book. For me there wasn’t any chemistry between the two MCs and I have no idea how they fell in love when they had a total of three conversations and then spent the rest of the time avoiding each other. There was so much unnecessary stuff going on outside of the romance that didn’t go anywhere so I’m not sure what the point was.
There was no real 3rd act breakup, which is fine, but the ending was just like, meh 🤷🏻♀️
Genre: Romance Format: Digital POV: Dual Spice: NA, fade to black Age suggestion: 16+
A hockey romance to start the year because I will not leaving my hockey romance era in 2022! I loved this book, I found myself wishing for more though! The story was so good and I loved Ethan and Ryan. It was a slow burn for sure, it was a little rough for a while. I was getting frustrated on how much they weren’t talking. But somehow I KNEW once they figured it out it would all work out perfectly.
Ryan needs a place to live and she answers an ad Ethan put out for a room for rent and everything works out perfectly. Ethan is trying to stay super focused on hockey this year, he can’t risk any distractions, and he has a feeling Ryan could be exactly that. Until he realizes ignoring his feelings is getting more in the way than acting on them.
Even though they spent a lot of time NOT together, and we didn’t really get to see them guiding s friendship in the way some books depict it, it was clear they were becoming friends. They just didn’t know how to ignore their attraction and hiking feelings towards each other making it seemingly impossible to be around each other. And once they realized it was okay to act on their feelings - so sweet! And things happens pretty quick after that. Time moved pretty quickly throughout the story so their relationship wasn’t totally warped speed but it sometimes felt like it.
But I loved them so much! The way the loved each other. They complimented each other so well! I loved how quickly Ethan was IN. He was talking about how much he would take care of her, what he wanted for the future, asked what she wanted in the future. I could read about them forever.
This book was really nothing special in the grand scheme of ice hockey romances.
I DO however, think it is objectively one of the best written wattpad books I’ve ever read, if only because every other book I’ve reread from wattpad has not lived up to my previous ratings and reviews.
The main character of this book, Ryan, is really annoying, which I feel is a trend in wattpad books. She constantly complained about her financial situation while ALSO constantly splurging on unnecessary new outfits for every occasion, new decorations for every holiday and just a whole bunch of unnecessary items that she would not buy if she were a actually in debt. This is a small thing but it really triggered me since she’s presumably poorer than me and yet she can afford to buy all these unnecessary items.
Anyway, other than that aspect of her character, I liked her for the most part. She was a little Judgemental of everyone around her, but I could ignore it since she was generally right.
Her romance with Ethan was…fine. I didn’t really care, and I thought it was way too sexual, especially when compared to other books by Avery Keelan, like Offside and Shutout. They seemed really superficial, which is my biggest criticism of this book. The characters are superficial, the plot is superficial and the romance is superficial.
I don’t think this book is bad per se, but it really doesn’t compare to Avery Keelan’s recent works, which is a good thing. She’s definitely improved, Eva she if I had started here, I definitely wouldn’t have read the rest of her books.

I liked this book, but there were some things that kept me from loving it. First, this book moved fast. It had quick, short chapters that moved through time fairly fast. I both liked and disliked that because sometimes I wanted to know more or see more after something happened. Second, Ethan drove me nuts with his reasons for not acting on his feelings for Ryan. Thankfully his friends helped him out. Third, Ryan kind of overacted at one point for no good reason. It didn't make sense to me that far into the book. Finally, what was that ending? It didn't really go with the book and felt too sudden. There was still a few more scenes that I needed. BUT other than those things, I loved the storyline and the romance. It was cute.
Sort of oddly written. We get random snapshots over the course of a year (I think?). Was really hard to figure out how much time had passed between chapters. Some chapters had substance, some were kind of pointless. None of the little storylines really got resolved (the ex, the dads, the mom, the hockey career, the random calls, etc), and the ending was super abrupt. Like I wonder if some chapters got missed when it was published? Thinking this was maybe a very early book for this author and it didn't get much editing. Both of the main characters were pretty immature and didn't handle conflict well. I realize they are actually very young, but neither was really very likeable-- I actually preferred some of the side characters.
Didn't really like the way this was written. Like the progression didnt really make any sense.
They say they feel a lot of tension so many times, but as the reader you dont really get to see/notice any of it?
Also why did it just.... suddenly end? So suddenly, with no warning? I thought i was missing some pages or something.
Also the way the characters reacted sometimes, felt really out of proportion for what was happening, and also didnt really seem to fit in with the characters personality to me.
However i was somewhat entertained throughout the whole thing, if that counts for anything :)
Easy to read and the first half was engaging. Will they.. won’t they.. will they.. of course they will!
But then when they actually did it was so closed door and lacklustre. All that pining and that was it?
The third act breakup was not great and the crazy ex and forced drama was a bit of a snore for me. The ending was also very random and did not feel like an ending at all. No epilogue. Odd.
I really enjoyed the story … it could have been a four or five star contender but it ended so abruptly that I had to drop a few stars. Read more like an unfinished novella but knowing this was a Wattpad book it makes sense. I hope Avery revisits this one and republishes it with additions to the ending.
I loved this thrope.(the roommate thing) But sometimes i didn’t get Ethan. Him and Ryan could have dated so much sooner, it was compliacted for no reason. But i loved his hockey mates, and was getting mad every time Alexis (i think that was her name, basically the ex of Ethan) showed up.
fluffy and cute ig. the ending threw me so off, why did it just end? i expected an epilogue or something. someone recommended it on instagram reels and those usually aren’t the best 😭 i stayed up until 2 finishing it last night
I liked the book but I think I liked the "Offside" better, the book is slow paced at the beginning and then fast paced at the end, and the ending didn't satisfy me 😭
I enjoyed the book, I mean It’s a hockey romance. I love the authors previous work, but there was literally no ending. No epilogue. What was that? Who let her published with our finishing the book?
