When college drop-out April gets a job as a “special collection librarian,” she just wants a paycheck to help pay off her grandma’s medical bills.
If only she knew just how special the collection was…
April soon discovers the library’s secret: a magical portal that opens to the worlds of books…
and she’s been selected to be the portal’s new guardian: the Pagewalker.
The gate shows her things beyond her wildest imagination and introduces her to larger-than-life characters, but is she ready for this responsibility?
When an ancient organization determined to eradicate magic from the world seeks to destroy the gate, April must team up with a diverse cast of characters—both real and fictional—or else the gate may be lost forever...
"Pagewalker" is the first book in the Library Gate Series and is approximately 45,000 words long.

H. Duke writes fantasy, horror, and more. She wrote Taming the Wolf and the first season of Jeremiah Jones Cowboy Sorcerer while living in Arizona with her husband, Giru, and a shiny black dog named Jupiter. These days, she can be seen travelling the United States in her travel trailer. To see her other works and find out where she'll be writing next, visit her website.
This is the first book in the Pagewalker series. It gets off to a very, very, slow start. There are some interesting concepts and characters introduced, but at times the story had trouble holding my attention. There were small niggles in current world building around simple concepts and ways of doing business in the current world (such as April’s complete lack of library knowledge and simple logistics like how long it would take to issue her first paycheck after starting a new job).
I found the Heroine April at times very frustrating and not at all sympathetic, as she lurched from rash decision to rash decision. I also found the book lacking in charm, although some interesting relationships are forming between various characters.
The story could use another edit, as there are spelling and/or grammar mistakes in places. There might also be a fact or continuity check done, (for example how would character Randall who is homeless know how the people in Downton Abbey dress??)
Final Rating: 2 Stars - It was a bit of a tough go at times, but perhaps an interesting enough concept that I would read the second book in the series.

Title: TANSTAAFL!
Imagine if the books you read as a kid could actually be a doorway into another dimension and place.
Now imagine the what that would be like to get a job where you could do that every night. Visit. Learn. Explore. Live life, but mostly live!
Imagination is all that s left after the last Pagewalker throws it all out, rather than fight for the good that can come from being able to escape the world for a while. Maybe the previous Pagewalker should ve tapped him for the job. He does have the capability to handle it -veteran, knows battle, has and can use his brain- definitely can think on his feet. Most importantly is willing to help the current Pagewalker when she realizes how much she screwed up.
All I m going to say is they pull it off somewhere in time. You ll have to get this book to see how, and see information about the next one in this series. Trust me, if you like page turning books, you ll get this book!
There s something wrong if Terrans can only want safety and are willing to sacrifice everything for that. Life loses all meaning when random chance is deprived of developing.
This is such a fun read! April is hired as a special collection librarian, a job she knows she's not qualified for. She needs the money to help pay for her grandmother's medical bills and the pay is a lot more than she could get anywhere else. When she discovers what's "special" about the job she's not sure she wants it after all, but soon discovers that she would to anything to keep it. As a devout reader I loved the concept of the book. It's something I've wished I could do many times. The author has made the characters likable and realistic. I can't wait to see where the series takes them! Anyone who loves books, magic, and adventure will like this series!
I loved the idea of this book, but there was, for me, one fatal flaw. Becoming the Pagewalker would be a dream come true for any real bookworm. I'm a bookworm, and I love the idea. Unfortunately, the main character - the one that becomes the Pagewalker - is NOT a bookworm, hasn't read any of the classics, doesn't have any interest in reading books, and completely fails to appreciate the opportunity she has been given. How am I supposed to relate to that? I just did not particularly like - or understand - the central figure in this book. For me, it probably rates about 2.5 stars, but I'm bumping it up to 3 because I liked the idea so much.
I wasn't too crazy about this book. The concept is good but I think there should be a more interesting way using the portals etc. Maybe do books with interesting or famous people and have them come thru the portal into our world and interact with them here - show them how things has changed since the time their stories were written. Just an idea. I did finish it so it wasn't all that bad or I wouldn't have done that.
I chose this book originally, because I just finished another and it seemed like a light read. Imagine my surprise when the story was not just good but very good!I couldn't stop reading it! I've been a reader since I learned how and the author made me wish I could be there in that library! I need to get the next book!
This is a great series. The plot is original and different. A most enjoyable story. Who would not want to enter into the world of books. We do it all the time when we read a story, but we never really enter the story like a pagewalker can. Really enjoyed this book and will be reading more in this series.
This was a bit different than I expected. So much time is spent on April’s problems. I really thought we’d get some interesting experiences with page walking. The book ends just as April accepts the role of Pagewalker. I’m a bit disappointed and not interested enough to see where other books in the series go.
I absolutely love the characters and storyline so far on this series. The main character would be an alien way of thinking to me if it was not for knowing people like that in the real world. My favorite and most relatable character is Randall. Want to know why read it!
Excellent story about a library and the special books contained there. If you like books and stories about the impossible that all book lovers would jump ar, then this book is for you.
It was OK. The premise was good. I didn't really identify with the main character, April. She seemed fairly immature and maybe the story is more fit for YA readers. It is an imaginative story about a special collections librarian who can "page walk" into certain books. It's fairly well edited.
This book had a fun premise - the character can step into the pages of the book and experience the goings-on during that book's plot. But don't try to change anything or the other characters will come after you! But it was short, and there was so little adventure inside the pages of the stories. I wanted more of that. But I see it's a long series so maybe much more adventure awaits.
Experience the world of a book. Great story, April has the ability to walk into the pages of books and interact with the characters, through the last magical gateway. She will have many adventures thoughout this fast paced enjoyable series while she protects the gateway.
Love the concept! Something magical, yet there are very human thoughts and emotions interwoven in the story. Definitely something for fans of InkHeart.
If you love books that take you places familiar but not. Characters you start out not liking or those you fall in love with this book is for you. It's wonderful.
