John Lindley Byrne is a British-born Canadian-American author and artist of comic books. Since the mid-1970s, Byrne has worked on nearly every major American superhero.

Byrne's better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics’ Superman franchise. Coming into the comics profession exclusively as a penciler, Byrne began co-plotting the X-Men comics during his tenure on them, and launched his writing career in earnest with Fantastic Four (where he also started inking his own pencils). During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited. He also wrote the first issues of Mike Mignola's Hellboy series and produced a number of Star Trek comics for IDW Publishing.

Another very enjoyable collection of Star Trek photo-novels (these are photo-montages using material from the original series) from John Byrne. While one of these had some cropping/editing issues, over all these are fun and kind of an original series fan's dream come true. There's only so much that be accomplished in this type of medium, but Byrne is doing some really creative work in manipulating the images. While one started off a little slow and seemed like it wasn't going to really develop into much, it ended up being a bit more interesting than I'd expected. And another had, as I said, some cropping and editing issues (minor, but they're there), it turned out to be a rather interesting twist on the whole cliche of putting the actor in an otherwise empty set. This is a great thing for the die-hard fan.

I really liked the alien designs in this volume. And John Byrne really knows how to end each story with a really good line.

I normally really enjoy this book series, but these stories were either really bad or just okay. Maybe the next installment in the series will be better.

John Byrne does it again!

Alternate universe, Star Trek Original Series, new fiction, photo montage & digital art

There are three longer stories featuring new alien races – "What a Pain It is To Drown," "The Hunger," and "Isolation." The stories were inventive, sometimes using tech that previewed what we would see in Next Generation. There were also two shorts last a single or two pages; one showing Checkov's reaction to getting promoted and getting his own quarters, and the second, showing holo-pods, the precursor to an entire room later called a holo-suite. Excellent editing. Again, Byrne's years of writing comics shows in the story pacing and how he sets up the actions. Enjoyed.

I'm a huge Star Trek fan, and I also enjoy John Byrne's writing.
However, this collection was not that great.
These are ike the old photo-novels they used to make n the late 70's, using real images from a film or yv show.
A cool gimmick and well done here, as always.
But the stories are just not up to snuff, IMO. The last one, is the best one.

I would have preferred the stories to be novels, as they need more emotional and scientifical flesh on their bones, but they were interesting to read. Though the 'being won't recognise anyone other than itself worthy of living' trope gets a little stale by now. (And a little kafka-esk in being a depressing, but possible situation.)

Star Trek: New Visions Vol. 7

An impossible series of liquid water bubbles in space may hold the secret to the tragic destruction of worlds and only Spock may be able to work out why. New life does not always mean friendly life.

Byrne's 'New Visions' works well to show a sense of progression in the Five Year Mission and the photo manipulation works very well most of the time.

This is so weird. Interesting idea taking stills from the old tv series and turning them into a photo-novel, but the three stories in this one were very inconsistent especially when it came to continuity of the images.

These new visions books are a lot of fun. I’m in awe of the artistry and creativity AND mad photoshop skills required to produce these books. Captures the essence of the original series and expands roles for the rest of the original cast outside of the big 3.
