"Andrew Lennon is a rising star of horror." - Iain Rob Wright, author of the Hell on Earth series

Twisted – The shadowy malevolence hidden in the most traumatised of cerebrums. The tightness of a solid knot that pushes the final breath from a doomed hangman. A word used to describe the darker, seedier side of society. The spine-tingling sound of the maniacal laugh from a creepy stranger.
From Andrew Lennon comes Twisted Shorts. Featuring a foreword from the future of horror, Michael Bray, this collection of ten short stories delves into the darker side of society. With four unpublished stories, including Devourer, Slayer and Tears of a Clown, the words within will give you nightmares.
So what do we have? A husband who glimpses his sinister future; a man haunted by his vivid nightmares; homicidal maniacs; creatures from the deep depths of the ocean, and a bullied child who fights back. We also drop in on an auditor on the brink of insanity; a young girl haunted by her dead best friend; a surgeon on a bloody, vengeful mission; a tale of the undead, and a vengeful clown.
Sound familiar? They should, after all these people could be your neighbour, your friend, your mother, your child's teacher, your deliveryman, your gynecologist, or even you - just give it time…
Twisted Shorts – the duration is little but the memory will live long.

This is a great collection of mixed short stories from the imaginative mind of Andrew Lennon. I have really become a fan of both single short stories and collections of shorts this year, you can often find some absolute gems particularly in the horror/dark fiction genre.

All of the stories in Andrew's book are quite different which was refreshing, there is nothing worse than the sense you are reading the same story over and over with a different title. From torture scenes that turn the stomach to emotional punches in the face (don't try this at home) it's all here for the reader seeking something to take them away from the humdrum of every day life.

My husband is not only not a fan of horror or scary books but he reads about one book every two years (very frustrating for this bookworm) but he started reading the first story to me when I was actually sick in bed (I know, sweet huh?) and I discovered after I fell asleep that he went on to finish it, and like it! That's high praise indeed.

A recommended addition to your reading list, I like to use shorts as a "cleanser" between long novels to refresh my reading palate and help me discover what an author has to offer. I am now waving pom-poms at Andrew in the hope that very soon I get to read some long, terrifying creepy novels by him.

My love of short stories continues!

10 quick shorties that I read in about an hour.

While there were some misses, the majority of these were a hit in my book. My fav's being 'Daddy's Girl' and 'The Swings'.

I'm going to have to see what else this author has penned-hopefully more of the same!

Andrew Lennon is one of a new breed of exciting young horror writers trying to make an impression in a very competitive industry. I was first introduced to his work in the excellent A-Z of horror by Iain Rob Wright and was immediately enthralled by his contribution in this anthology "Daddy's Girl"  Young Scott arranges a date with his new girlfriend Jane but before the evening can commence Scott is introduced to Jane's dad the wealthy and well respected Doctor Harrison. When an unfortunate and disastrous incident occurs it is left to Doctor Harrison to seek out Scott and show him the error of his ways. This is an edge of the seat story with a very unsettling but very satisfying conclusion.

Daddy's Girl  is one of 10 original and highly entertaining horror short stories within "Twisted Shorts". There is an energy and vitality about Andrew Lennon's writing style which makes his stories instantly readable and oh so memorable. I loved the random violence and cosy home life in "Family Man" where love and warmth can turn to death and hate in an instant and to kill is all part of a daily process..."Sometimes you just don't need a reason" This is almost a reflection of the throwaway society that we live in where rules of right and wrong exist but are so easily broken. "Time" is my personal favourite story, an ingenious work of fiction where the reader questions what exactly is the reality happening here? The narrator returns home to his wife Sadie where he is confronted by some wonderful news, a young couple so in love with their future before them. In an instant the story changes and we have a deranged, confused and sick old man unable to walk and puzzled by his surroundings. What is the connection between these two timelines? The answer and conclusion is ingenious and perhaps one of the greatest horror short stories I have ever read....yes it is that good"

Twisted Shorts is an excellent collection of original and inspiring reads by an author who is clearly enjoying his craft and more than capable of communicating this zeal and freshness to his readers. Highly Recommended.

I did the audiobook of this one. Great narrator & fun stuff to stop me in my tracks doing housework. At several points, I caught myself just staring at the wall listening. Also shouted out a few laughs and exclamations of surprise.

He had some great trailing "Wtf" endings. Just enough info to imagine how the end played out. I love those. I don't always need or want an ending spelled out in big letters. I like going "OoOoOoOo". I know you're not supposed to giggle at the Pear of Anguish but since I knew what it was and a character didn't, I laughed. Excellent imagination at work here.

Mr. Lennon is quickly becoming my favorite horror author and this selection of short stories only adds to his creativity. This book is full of Blood, guts and gore. My favorite story is the very first because as a child I was prone to nightmares. If you love being scared then you have to give this book a try. You'll have trouble sleeping!I forgot how the second story took me once again back to my childhood because as in the story my father was an alcoholic and became friends of the police and knew most of them by their first names. Also, I'm afraid of hospitals and doctors. Each story gets better and better, I don't want to spoil the whole book, just suffice it to say that it's too scary for the children!

Pretty good anthology.

I enjoyed this book, quite a lot. I ended up reading it in one sitting. I really liked the twists brought forth in these stories. They really WERE twisted, and I didn't see most of the twists coming. If you like short horror stories, especially ones with unexpected endings, give this collection a go.

MY REVIEW:
I enjoyed this collection. The stories are creepy and imaginative.

This collection includes the tales:
Nightmares
-- This is a story about a man whose nightmares have been plaguing him and how quickly they turn to real life. This is a chilling tale, and I liked it very much. I predicted the ending, but that didn't take anything away from it. It was still very much an enjoyable read.
Daddy's Girl
-- "Daddy's Girl" is a tragic love story about two young people who make a fatal mistake and how grief -- and revenge -- forces them to pay for it in the most terrible way. I predicted this story, too, but I still enjoyed it because Lennon crafts a story well. What I didn't predict is the method of revenge used in this story, and it is a real twisted treat.
Slayer
-- This is among my top two favorites in the collection. It's gruesome and frightening in all of the right ways. It tells the tale of two young boys, best friends. One of them, the more reckless of the two, dies a terrible death, and the second boy is haunted by it. Does real friendship ever really end?
Externals
-- This is a unique tale, but it wasn't my favorite. I like the style, here, in this tale particularly, though. It feels like Lennon went in a direction here in which he is particularly skilled.
Family Man
-- This story does a great job of teetering perfectly between heartbreaking and horrifying. It's about a father who struggles to understand how he could possibly commit a terrible act against those he loves the most. I liked this story very much.
Tears of a Clown
-- It seems as though we have left the era of zombies behind and entered that of the clown. Everywhere we look there are scary clown stories. Personally, I don't get it. I don't find clowns frightening at all. Lennon's take on the creepy clown tale is a bit different than others I've come across, so I appreciated that.
Time
-- I was "meh" on this story. It felt a little disjointed to me. I got the concept -- what Lennon was going for -- but I just didn't feel like it came together well. Time-jump/travel stories can often be hard to do well, though, so I get it.
Devourer
-- This was the other of my top favorite stories. It's delightfully scary. What lurks in the deep is always creepy, and the thing the MC meets down there are just that. Sqonk is quite the character and really makes the story.
Throw a Punch
-- I'm not sure this is exactly a horror story, but I suppose I would call it twisted. In "Throw a Punch", Joe, a timid, bullied, young boy soon learns he is capable of more than he ever imagined. I liked this story. It's the ultimate underdog tale.
The Swings
-- This was the perfect way to wrap up this collection, I think. This story is about two little girls who, while playing on the swings at a nearby park, meet an old man who will forever change their lives. Imagining myself as a young girl in this situation made this story particularly scary, and the ending of this tale is great.

Overall, I liked this collection, and I think Lennon writes horror well. If you're in the mood for some good, creepy short horror stories (who isn't this time of year), pick this collection up.

Andrew Lennon is a sick man!

Seriously, I'm glad he is a writer so he can get this out of his system. I wouldn't want someone who thinks like he does running around without a safe outlet for his twisted mind.

In all seriousness, twisted shorts is a fantastic collection of short stories. They are all well crafted and paced.

Andrew injects just enough humour into his stories to make them enjoyable, before kicking you in the balls with some shocking twists.

His characters are relateable and he puts them in situations we have all experienced. For example, the man who is meeting his girlfriend's father for the first time and he doubts the knocking etiquette before he knocks on the door. That's happened to me many times and I really related to the character as he didn't feel good enough to present himself to his rich girlfriend's dad.

The relatability of the character made the ending even more uncomfortable reading.

I have another Lennon title to read.

If it's as good as this collection of stories, I'm in for a treat.

Although I found most of the premises of the stories in Andrew Lennon's collection 'Twisted Shorts' promising, the overall quality of the writing - especially language, plot structure, and endings - didn't convince me. Which is sad to say, because Lennon could have made something out of his ideas.

To get one thing out of the way: I am not opposed to self-publishing. Not at all. There are great writers out there who are their own editors - and who are good at what they do. Look at Edward Lorn and his novel 'The Sound Of Broken Ribs', for example. But in this case I strongly believe that an experienced and critical editor would have improved the book significantly.

So, what's the problem? Actually, it's hard to pin down for me. There was not one story that didn't begin with a promise and ended with a letdown. Especially the endings were very disappointing in their abrupt matter-of-fact way. There is nothing between the lines here, nothing unspoken of, everything is put into words.

Take 'Throw A Punch' as an example. Thinking about it, it's basically a nice idea to picture a story of a boy who finally learns to stand up against his bullies like this. But they way it's delivered is really... bad. Sorry. It is. He throws the eponymous punch, his friend says: "Hey, you're a superhero!", and then the story is over. What the...?! If you want to see how masterfully this topic (coming-of-age, being an outsider, overcoming in a supernatural way) can be addressed, check out 'You Will Hear The Locusts Sing' and 'The Cape' from Joe Hill's masterful collection '20th Century Ghosts'. This is how you do it.

And this goes for all the stories, unfortunately. It has absolutely no literary quality. And no magic. It's as if the author wrote it down, liked it, and published it. The first draft. (Which is a theory that might even be true, considering the many, many spelling, grammar and layout mistakes throughout the whole book.)

So: One star, or two? I gave it two. Because of the premises. Some (albeit not many) pictures that stayed with me. And the almost beautiful story 'Time', which wasn't really an exception to the rule, but slightly better than the rest of the book.

I won't lie, when this book arrived from Amazon I was quite disappointed. Usually, when a book contains 10 short stories it's a much thicker volume than this book is. And while a couple of the stories were rather predictable, several of them were exactly as the title promised, twisted. Daddy's Girl, Tears of a Clown, and The Swings were my favorites, but some of the others were very good. Andrew Lennon does have a twisted mind and delivers it to us, the readers, clearly. I will offer this warning, though, if violence against children (fictional) bothers you, this is not the collection for you.

Author collections are often a mixed bag and Twisted Shorts is no exception. I came to it expecting some pretty severe horror as I'd heard Andrew Lennon's books are a 'must read', but I think that even though for the most part there are some gruesome moments, we're still more in the 'thriller' category here.

Although largely enjoyable there's a definite issue with the overall 'self-published' feel of it in that it looks as if the first draft was the final one with the many typos and other errors on display. I've rated it three stars because even though it's not as polished as I was hoping for it's still a very clear indication of a fertile imagination at work and is still worth a read.

Most of the stories follow the theme of family or friends with the horror touching one or both friends. A couple of the stories don't seem to be fully developed and the endings are a bit abrupt, but there are some gems too. It only takes a couple of hours to read so it's worth the time.
I would recommend this author and I look forward to more of his work.

Andrew Lennon has the ability to write short stories that have an impact. Ten tales of horror, a good mix with something for everyone. Only one tale I wasn't keen on but the other nine were spot on. Particularly enjoyed The Swings and Daddy's Girl. Well worth the read, Flies is another to look at if you enjoy these.
