Earth Girl #0.6

Earth and Air

Rate this book
Don’t breathe! The second Earth Girl prequel novella featuring Jarra.

2788. Only the handicapped live on Earth. While everyone else uses interstellar portals to travel between hundreds of colony worlds, 17-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, abandoned by her parents to be raised a ward of Hospital Earth, she lives a regimented life in one of their impersonal residences.

Jarra is spending the summer at New York Fringe Dig Site with her school history club. While her friends search for lost treasures on the ground, Jarra is airborne in a survey plane and hoping to become a qualified pilot, but the sprawling ancient ruins of New York contain the lethal legacies of the past as well as its treasures.

EARTH AND AIR is the second of the prequel novellas set in the distant future of the Earth Girl trilogy and featuring Jarra. At over 60,000 words it is actually longer than standard novella length.

It was a real treat to rebond with Jarra, the chirpy disaster-magnet who is the main protagonist in Edwards’ popular Earth Girl series. I had forgotten just how effective Edwards’ writing style is when depicting the alliances and frictions between a group of young teenagers. It could so easily become tedious or petty, but never does. The other standout feature of this entertaining series is the fascinating backdrop – a ruined Earth, where buildings are lethally unstable yet packed with archaeological treasures and discoveries eagerly awaited by populations scattered across the stars.

Novellas are not generally my favourite reads – too often, I have just become engrossed only to find the story abruptly finishing. Only a handful of my favourite writers can, in my opinion, adequately control the pacing and narrative arc so that the ending isn’t an unpleasant jolt. Edwards is one of them. At no time did I feel I was being short-changed with either the characterisation, setting or the storyline which contains plenty of adventures and shocks. The other outstanding quality of Edwards writing, particularly with this series, is the chirpy, upbeat tone that pervades most of the story. Unlike so many YA books, I get the sense that most of the people are trying to do the best they can most of the time. This is definitely one I will be introducing my granddaughter to next time she comes to visit – I think she will love it. With the absence of bad language or gratuitous violence, it is an ideal read for young teens – as well as those of us a lot longer in the tooth. This one is far too good to leave just to the youngsters. Recommended for fans of adventure and science fiction.

There is so much I can say about this novella. But I will keep myself short^^

This Novella takes place during the summer when Jarra and her schools' history Club are out on summer camp on the New York Fringe Dig Site. Timely it's set a little after "Earth and Fire" - I think. We follow her as she is trying to take up the last missing flying lessons with Gradin before she can apply to get her licence.
But not only this is happening. We meet new faces, and finally meet her history teacher, Crozier, who was only briefly mentioned before in the books. As well as some other rather interesting people.
In my eyes the most interesting out of all newly introduced characters is Valeska. Because - read the novella and you will know^^

I quite enjoyed the novella, at first, I wasn't so sure what the story was supposed to tell. But in the end, it all came together, and I could see some of the things told here affect the future Jarra, we got to know in "Earth Girl". Also, it showed a little more, what life's like on Earth in 2788.

Because I thought the beginning was a little bit weak, I can only give it 4.5/4.75 stars out of 5.
And can we just say, Janet Edwards writing style is getting better and better with every piece she puts out - I LOVE IT!

Yum. What great comfort food. There is nothing particularly sophisticated or elevated about these Earth Girl (and related) tales, but I devour each one upon its release. Jarra is a relatable and comfortable as a protagonist. Her exploits are exciting but never overly stressful. These books serve as an excellent palate cleanser between heavier works of literature.
I genuinely hope Janet Edwards has another 50 "Portal Future" books to write.

Great to learn a bit more of Jarra's formative story. This continues from Earth and Fire, where she starts to get serious about learning to fly and covers her last summer with the school history society working on a dig on the New York Fringe site and working towards getting her professional pilots license. As usual there are unexpected difficulties and we meet a new cast of interesting characters. Very enjoyable.

A prequel novella that gives a lot of little hints to the backstory of who Jarra is! I still utterly love the style of writing of these books.

Good prequel

Good prequel to the EGN novels, but should be read AFTER reading the main series. Great characterization. Nice added depth to the universe.

This is a novella set before Jarra starts at University of Asgard.

Having to be in charge of the three junior members of the History Club while trying to get her pilot's license was a cute insight into Jarra's character.

My husband has an entire head canon where Jaxon was there that day and saw Jarra, but of course he couldn't speak to her because she hadn't requested access to her family's records and wouldn't have known who he was.

Also can we get a series about Valeska?

After 1st Reading:Another excellent short novel from Janet Edwards. This story is an excellent follow-on from Earth and Fire and has Ms Edwards magic touch of characters you instantly engage with. My only complaint is that now I'm itching for the promised third story "Earth and Water". Darn it Janet Edwards! Why do you have to be such an awesome author! ;-)

After 2nd Reading: After rereading, and loving the story, I'm seriously hoping for "Earth and Water"

After 3rd Reading: Rereading during the Lockdown. This is perfect material for this time, a positive story of people overcoming the odds, working together and achieving their goals. The fact that it involves an archaeological dig site is just the icing on the cake for me. As much as I'd still love a direct sequel to this story, I'm not complaining as the author just keeps churning out excellent stuff, so instead I'm moving straight on to the sort-of follow up short story Year End 2788.

This is another win for Janet Edwards.  I love this series and am always glad to see a novella so I can visit this world again, in this one we learn more about Jara's backstory. While this novella isn’t very long, it puts a lot into the pages, we get a glimpse into the hero that Jara becomes. This review was originally posted on Books In Brogan
