The ugly duckling is a classic tale that has been passed on for generations. This book has beautiful illustrations and strong character development, especially for a children's story. This book is a must-read for little ones, whether that be a bedtime story or a class setting. This book has the theme of not judging a book by its cover. this book can teach children that not everything is what it seems to be and to not let others get you down because everyone is beautiful and will know that in time when they become to know who they really are. There can be many lesson plans based on this book whether it be about the theme or the dialogue. It has a beautiful message that I feel needs to be shared with children for years to come. Highly recommend this book!

I first read this book many, many years ago as a child and it's only now years later as an adult that I see how disturbing some of these fairy tales really are!! To me, it feels like it's a story about bullying and the ultimate revenge. The poor duckling is told he is big and ugly from birth -by his own mother no less - and then by the other animals to the point he runs away. Then he thinks he's found refuge but because he can't lay eggs he's told to leave. Then he probably thinks his luck's in as a farmer takes pity on him and takes him in only for the farmer's little er - cherubs - to chase him around constantly so he runs away again. He then lays low for the winter and finds he's all grown up and is in fact a graceful and beautiful swan!! See, the ultimate revenge!!!!

This book beautifully retells the classic tale of transformation and self-acceptance, following an awkward duckling who is shunned until he grows into a graceful swan. The vibrant illustrations make the story engaging for young readers. Suitable for grades K-2, this book can be used in the classroom to discuss themes of acceptance and individuality. After reading, students can share personal stories or create art that reflects their unique qualities, fostering empathy and a supportive environment. Also a good classroom library book!

There have been many retellings of this story of a duckling that is born a horrible grey colour as its brothers and sisters are all yellow. The duckling is shunned by everyone including his own family but as it gets older it changes into a beautiful swan and is finally accepted.

This story teaches children to accept those that are different as they may have beauty inside. Out of all of the fairytales that have been circulating for thousands of years this tale has always been one of my favourite.

This is a story that will be around for many years and will be loved by many people both young and old. I know when I was reading this story I felt the same way I did as a child. This story will be one that I will read to my children, when I have them!

I give The Ugly Duckling a much loved 5/5

Tale of the little swan, growing up in the yard with geese and suffers much cruelty, before being joined by a swan family.

This is a different spin to an old fable. The story needed more illustrations for the age group it is structured for.
