Self-awareness is the bedrock of emotional intelligence that enables you to see your talents, shortcomings, and potential. But you won't be able to achieve true self-awareness with the usual quarterly feedback and self-reflection alone.
This book will teach you how to understand your thoughts and emotions, how to persuade your colleagues to share what they really think of you, and why self-awareness will spark more productive and rewarding relationships with your employees and bosses.
This volume includes the work Daniel Goleman, Robert Steven Kaplan, and Susan David.
HOW TO BE HUMAN AT WORK.
The HBR Emotional Intelligence series features smart, essential reading on the human side of professional life from the pages of Harvard Business Review . Each book in the series offers proven research showing how our emotions impact our work lives, practical advice for managing difficult people and situations, and inspiring essays on what it means to tend to our emotional well-being at work. Uplifting and practical, these books describe the social skills that are critical for ambitious professionals to master.
Again a well curated set of essays. I would like to record my reflection about one specific article- “You by number”. I was skeptical. I sighed “again a left brained researcher here as well” :D i judged the article by the title saying this article is out of place- too quantitative to be here.
It made a lot of sense though. It actually was helpful- Even to develop soft skills, it takes a lot of discipline. For ex, We can improve the empathy muscle only by repeatedly practicing with people around. It is not possible to get going without the arduous effort and discipline. Tracking your activities by numbers helps in improving the discipline.
Few more tips that I found useful
1. To increase insight and reduce rumination - ask ‘what’ instead of why. Instead of asking “why am I feeling terrible?” ask “what are the situations that make me feel stressed?” 2. Name your emotions and handle them with curiosity. 3. To solicit feedback from your team- Share what do you want to improve in yourself and how do you want to do the same. I can also ask “What is it that I can learn from you?” Another thing that I also practiced and found useful is “If i could change a small habit, what should it be”

Took a quite long time for me to finish this book, not because it's not good but because I feel attacked/slapped. There are so much aspects of myself to improve: particularly in discovering my real self, taking criticism, understanding my game arena, etc. This book is really eye-opening. I contemplated much during reading every chapter, and realized how hard to become a "self-aware" people.
Two stars because it doesn't really reflect on how race, ethnicity, and/or culture impacts a facets of self-awareness and the corresponding sub-topics mentioned within this book.

I found this one a particularly hard read. It sounds strange fo say for a self help book, but I don’t know if it’s because I couldn’t get it to it or I wasn’t in the right head space for this content. But don’t get me wrong in saying, some of the essays were interesting from someone who is wanting to becoming more aware of their emotions, growth and accepting of feedback both personally and professionally. Maybe one for me to come back to at a point I need that self reflection.
Beautifully portraying what a man can be if he is self-aware, this book has gathered a few words from good authors. This book is a good start for a newbie. This book is suggestive rather than being explanatory.
Firstly, self-awareness enhances Emotional Intelligence as a person is more likely to accept his mistakes. He can see what people get, from his personality. A person ought to be flexible enough to perceive what kinda mistakes he is doing unwittingly or purposely.
Self-awareness is on two levels. Internal and External. Furthermore, to be aware of yourself, just introspection is not enough as it can make you more ruminative and more depressed. But to be self-aware a person must be knowing of his inner feelings and what people get from his personality. A successful leader comprehends what made them who they are. It could be a place, person or an environment. People usually get intrigued by other successful people and they say it’s hard-working what makes them achieve this. But they miss, a hardworking without willing can never be enough. So you must have a passion to drive yourself. Observe when you were best and enjoyed it.
Emotional Agility makes you more self-aware. Don’t be depressed on yourself but distinguish, label, accept and act on your values and thoughts. Self-reflection is important to find the cause that thwarts you to be with yourself. What excuses concealing your mind. Track yourself through apps and different procedures to monitor your habits to be aware of yourself.
Get to know how people perceive you at work. Be flexible enough to get negative feedback. Request legit and definite feedbacks. Ask what you couldn’t learn from them. Thoroughly examine the feedback and improve yourself.
-Leaders with emotional agility focus on inner experiences: value-driven + mindful way. This reduces stress and errors, produce greater innovation and job performance.
Develop emotional agility: 1. Recognize patterns. Self monitor your thoughts and feelings. Which hooked you on? 2. Label thoughts and emotions. Instead of “I’m not doing enough work” think: “I’m having the thought that I’m not working enough”. Simple mindfulness practices generate positive changes in the brain. 3. Accept thoughts. Don’t control them. Don’t act on every thought. 4. Act on your values.
-Set aside time to self-reflect and ask questions about yourself. -Ask for candid feedback from others. Don’t be defensive. Separate the “what” from the “who”. Unpack the feedback and analyze it.
Emotional agility, internal & external self-awareness, leaders who hold more power overestimate, how and why people give constructive feedback, fictional intelligence, hopes & dreams vs fears & insecurities, call though a though. Quick sum
• Know thyself — be realistic about your strengths and weaknesses, and attuned to your emotions, needs, and drives. • Decisions should be made based on values rather than impulse. • Self-awareness is reflected in candor, accurate self-assessment, and openness. • Self-deprecating humor is often a sign of self-awareness — knowing your limitations and being comfortable with them. • When you understand your strengths, you set yourself up to fail less. • Emotional intelligence can be seen as a subset of self-awareness.
Components: • Knowledge of strengths and weaknesses • Self-regulation and control of reactions • Motivation — willingness to own failures • Empathy — understanding others and their motivations
——————————— 2. Types of Self-Awareness There are two types:
• Internal self-awareness: understanding your own values, passions, reactions, and impact. • External self-awareness: understanding how others perceive you.
Low internal / low external: Seekers — stuck and frustrated because they don’t know themselves. High internal / low external: Introspectors — clear on who they are but may ignore how others see them (“self-absorbed blind spot”). Low internal / high external: Pleasers — focused on others’ opinions but unclear on their own values. High internal / high external: Aware — know who they are, what they value, and how others perceive them.
From insightblind.com: • Over-introspection can reinforce biases instead of producing insight. • True self-awareness requires seeking disconfirming evidence and external feedback. • Feedback is key — insight rarely comes from introspection alone.
——————————— 3. The Limits of Introspection
• Introspection does not always lead to improvement. • We often ask “Why did I do this?”, but our brains are storytellers that fill in narratives instead of seeking truth. • Instead of asking “Why do I feel terrible?”, ask: • “What situations make me feel this way?” • “What do these situations have in common?” • Focus on what helps you get to solutions, not just explanations.
——————————— 4. Triggers of Self-Awareness Identify the people, events, or environments that shaped who you are today.
Research findings: • 45% of self-awareness shifts came from people — parents, mentors, or friends whose actions modeled behavior. • 40% came from events — failures, deaths, or turning points. Example: Debbi Fields (Mrs. Fields Cookies) had her passion ignited after being scolded for a dictionary error — a moment of awakening. • 15% came from environment — books, travel, or community exposure (e.g., joining the Peace Corps or growing up in a particular neighborhood).
These formative moments uncover our values and leadership identity.
——————————— 5. Passion, Purpose & Alignment
• There’s a strong correlation between feeling the mission, enjoying the job, and performing at high levels. • Passion acts as rocket fuel to overcome difficulties. • Belief in what you do sustains energy and creativity. • Connecting passion to what you do helps sustain purpose.
——————————— 6. Exercises to Uncover Passion & Your “Best Self” Reflect on moments when you were at your best:
• What were you doing? • What tasks were you performing? • What was the impact you were having? • Were you self-directed or following a boss? • What factors helped you shine?
After reflection, ask: • What does this tell you about what you might enjoy now? • What environment, values, or mission made you thrive?
If you had one year to live, how would you spend it? What does that tell you about your purpose?
——————————— 7. Emotional Agility
• Recognize patterns in your thoughts and emotions. • Accept them rather than suppress them. • Act in alignment with your values, not your emotions. • Emotional agility is about being conscious of emotions but acting deliberately.
——————————— 8. Reflection & Feedback
• Schedule 5–10 minutes daily to reflect — this compounds over time. • Use experience-sampling methods (journaling, time tracking, etc.) to understand where your time and energy go. • Try personal analytics tools (e.g., Bob Evans app from Google).
At work: • Reflect on how you’re perceived — there’s often a gap between intent and impact. • Ask 5–6 people (bosses, peers, reports) for feedback. • Ask: “What’s my general perception?” • Ask: “What could I do differently to increase my success?” • Appreciate feedback — ask for specific examples and patterns.
When people hesitate to give feedback: • Give yourself first — it opens them up. • Say, “I’d love to learn from you.”
Development is less about fixing ourselves and more about evolving through self-discovery.
The first component of emotional intelligence مقالهای که من رو تحت تاثیر قرار داد، مقاله دوم کتاب یعنی what self awareness is and how to cultivete it بود. Thinking about why one is the way one is may be no better than not thinking about one's self at all.
"Self-Awareness" is a collection of articles published by the Harvard Business Review that explores the importance of self-awareness in leadership and personal development. The book features insights from a range of experts in fields such as psychology, neuroscience, and leadership development, and provides practical advice for developing self-awareness and using it to improve performance and well-being.
Overall, I found this book to be a valuable resource for anyone interested in developing self-awareness and using it to become a more effective leader and person. The articles in the book cover a range of topics, from the neuroscience of self-awareness to the benefits of introspection and mindfulness in personal development.
One of the key takeaways from this book is the importance of developing a deep understanding of oneself in order to become a more effective leader and person. The authors argue that self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence, which is essential for building strong relationships, making sound decisions, and leading others effectively.
Another important theme in the book is the idea that self-awareness is a skill that can be developed and improved over time. The authors provide practical advice for developing self-awareness, such as practicing mindfulness and reflection, seeking feedback from others, and developing a growth mindset.
Overall, I highly recommend "Self-Awareness" to anyone interested in developing their leadership and personal development skills. The book is full of practical advice and real-world examples that are sure to be helpful to anyone looking to become a more self-aware and effective leader and person.
Honestly, same review as “Cómo tratar con gente difícil” but I liked it less.
It provides good examples of situations that we can find in the workplace. Although they can be applied in other aspects of daily life, I would have liked it to be more general, applying all areas of our lives. I would take another star off for the mere fact that I feel like I'm being talked to in a Ted-Talk or constant chat.
Definitely a good read. A collection of essays by many authors. Every chapter is by reputed, successful and widely accepted business people who had more often written a book on that topic. So, every chapter is somewhat a TLDR of the book that the author has written. Learnt many useful things.
My personal fav chapters were chapter 9 and 10. 9. How to solicit negative feedback when your manager doesn't want to give it? 10. Finding the coaching in criticism
The book is also super small. Could have possibly done a lightning read but it is better to slowly breathe, chew and sleep on books like these.
These articles may be brief but they are truly insightful and practical especially for newcomers. Self-awareness is like a taboo topic as it's often associated with feelings of uneasiness when you are trying to decode your irrational behaviors or asking others to help you do that (as in asking for negative feedback - urghhh). There are some articles that I just skipped right through and also some that I just wish I could swallow every word. The articles are bite-size pieces so it kept my focus in check. Overall, if you are working on your EI, this is a must-read.
I started off with this book, since I believe that EI is a good place to begin a path to leadership. Self-leadership, that is. The very first step being self-awareness.
The book contains several chapters, each written by different authors. I won't lie, some are better than others. About three focused on feedback (360 or not) to help push self-awareness. Personally, I know that many leaders seeks out information on that precise topic and so I would have binded them in a complete book altogether.
An amazing collection of essays that analyze and explain Self-Awareness in the modern world with a broad assortment of real-life examples to help the reader understand and improve upon himself/herself. It is very well written and does contain very useful tips and exercises. Alas, it is mostly made for career improvement and set in a business setting. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested in enhancing his work performance.
Effective leaders don’t buy into their emotions, neither do they try to suppress those; instead, they develop emotional agility. Sometimes we need negative feedback to succeed without feeling like failures. Self awareness is the bridge between how others see you and how you see yourself. I’ve always been quite self aware but I feel that I lost my awareness during the past 4 years, so this book was a great way to get back into mental shape

I just finished reading this book, and I'm feeling pretty good about it! It was definitely an interesting read, and I think I actually learned a few things. The author offered some fresh perspectives on some familiar topics. Overall, I'd totally recommend giving it a shot if you have some free time!
Two crucial things I learned from this book are: - We have to accept our feeling, don't neglect it. This helps us control our feeling. - Once we understand ourself - our strength and weakness, we will be more confident
Another nice collection of applicable qualities and skills from HBR. I had notes on receiving good and bad criticism, tracking your personal data, emotional agility, identifying your passions, self-awareness (two types, four archetypes), and emotional intelligence.
Overall I found this one helpful. My main criticism is that I found much of the information quite shallow, including the exercises. Although, my main focus on reading it wasn't so much career orientated, rather, it was personal development related.
