Su is a wetwork specialist hiding out in Thailand she gets a coded message to meet someone. There are only two possibilities, and it’s the one she didn’t want it to be, Michael Hunter.
Michael’s friendship was one she’d missed over time, and in the dark honesty of the moments between sleeping and waking, he was her “what if?”— the person she wondered about when she considered what would’ve happened if she’d given in to temptation instead of staying focused on her vocation. (Kindle Locations 88-90).

Just by meeting him, she’s broken her cover.
But he says he needs her; not her, but her skills. Someone is trying to assassinate his boss.
And he needs her to pretend to be his girlfriend.

*gasp* I’m IN. That’s my favourite trope.
This was a free short story offered to email list subscribers and is also in the Destination: love boxed set.
I haven’t read the series it branches from and that doesn’t matter. It’s pretty easy to pick up what’s going on.
Su is worried that Michael is giving his loyalty to a man who is basically a mob boss.
She says:
"It's not like any of us are in it to 'do the right thing' here. We learned a long time ago that even soldiers dedicated to faith and country don't have the choice to do what's right. We follow orders and go where the mission takes us. Sometimes the powers that be send us where we shouldn't be and order us to do awful things. The reasons are never truly good. The world isn't right and wrong, good and evil. It's full of complicated political bullshit. At least in our line of work now, money is more honest." (Kindle Locations 280-283).

And some extra Thai folklore.

Not one of her better stories. Maybe it was too short, but it felt rushed.

Great story!

Really got caught up the characters, their story and action. Is there going to be a continuation of their story?
