HER BLOOD COULD SAVE THE WORLD...
KANDI is a 19-year-old girl who harbors extreme social anxiety as a result of past torture and certain uncanny abilities. The last place she wants to be is anywhere near people. JUAN is an 18-year-old boy born to an underage, single mother. His dreams of a brighter future were crushed when he was arrested for killing his father. Cleverly orchestrated circumstances drive Kandi and Juan to meet and form a peculiar bond that may end up saving the galaxy. But first they must overcome their own trauma in order to destroy a government-funded organization set to unleash a devastating contagion upon humanity... one which could only be cured by Kandi’s blood. In Liquid Death, Kandi must conquer her fears and defeat her only friend and worst enemy: her father. Meanwhile, Juan must do all he can to save the girl... if only to learn the truth about himself.

Mitzi C was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised mostly in southeastern Idaho as a middle child of five. She generally prefers fiction over reality and discovered her passion for writing when she was about nine years old. Her favorite genres are science-fiction, fantasy, and romance, and she prefers combining all three in her own books.

Aside from writing, Mitzi enjoys practically nothing else, particularly not the company of people. She is sensitive to light and touch, and must be watered regularly. She has yet to experience many "firsts" in her life, such as taking a vacation or visiting a beach, and is therefore lawfully an infant. Please handle with care.

Update (April 26th, 2021): Mitzi thanks you for reading the series she wrote in her youth and wishes you the best in life as she pursues goals aside from writing henceforth.

This was one book which was so difficult to get into and the one which was so difficult to get out of. The story started with scenes so disjointed that I was fragmented in my view to continue to read further on not. But I am glad I stuck to my determination of getting past the mental blocks. The last few pages captured my imagination in ways I could never have anticipated.

My first book by author Mitzi C had me totally awed with the events unfolding of the past and the future of the two main characters Kandi and Juan. One pure being whose blood was both poison and cure and the other a hybrid who had survived the poison.

This was a true sci-fi with a thin sliver of fantasy thriller where Mitzi has combined the primitive natural forces which generally govern the people into the powers which govern both the beings and humanity. I found my pulse spiking at the high rising drama which unfurled in front of me. The powers in both Kandi and Juan had me literally clapping my hands. And hitting my head!! Why didn't they use their powers to escape?!! Sheesh!!

So that led to my niggles, the book did not grip from the get go. I had to force my brain to read which was not a good sign. I didn't really like both the main characters. The latter one third worked well, and I felt that this book 1 of the series had so much potential to be something more than what it was. It just missed the mark in the first half.

Overall an enjoyable read in the last few chapters.

A facility that experiments on children but is government sanctioned is everybody's worst nightmare come true. In Liquid Death, we met Kandi and while she doesn't speak, we hear volumes from her. We learn in increments the amount of power she wields. She has undergone various forms of torture at the hands of her father and his associates for as long as she can remember.

Then we meet Juan, who is stronger than anyone can imagine. He has a good heart, and he wants to be Kandi's friend. He wants more out of life than being an experiment and he wants to help Kandi in the meantime.

This truly was a hard to put down book. It was intriguing and well thought out. Mitzi doesn't reveal the title's reasoning until roughly 2/3rds of the book, but you get the sense of what it means in reading, it's a great build up. I had a lot of fun reading this and I can't wait to start the next book, Dawning Life.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Mitzi has delivered a novel that is quite intriguing, albeit difficult to follow at times.

Kandi's acute suffering was well written. I actually enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second - while the last bit was tense and fast paced, I found the author's grasp of time got a little loose.

Time is a major concept in this story, so I'm going to guess that the puzzling leaps in years, memories, and even character ages has something to do with the idea of Time as a being.

I found the supernatural side of things too powerful. Slowly gaining answers to questions I had about Kandi and Juan kept my interest, however, even as it became clear that they were over powered.

The first half of the story was better written and more structured. Kandi's torture, depression, and mysterious origins were dangled like the perfect bribe.

Overall, a pretty decent read.

Do you love rainbows, unicorns, and butterflies? Do you shudder at the sight of a rain cloud? Do you want a reading experience that wraps you in a big comfy blanket and tucks you in at night? Then this book might not be for you.

If, however, you enjoy immersing yourself in a world conspiring to destroy the lives of your favorite characters, then look no further than Liquid Death.

In my limited experience as a novice writer, I have been told by my mentors that conflict is essential to creating an engaging and interesting story. But Liquid Death manages to take conflict to a whole new level. For Kandi and Juan, struggle and discomfort are the status quo, so the moments of genuine relief and satisfaction make me want to stretch out the pages so I can enjoy them just a bit longer.

As someone who craves conflict and resistance, I became engrossed in Liquid Death right off the bat. Kandi’s ruthless surroundings always seem at odds with her kind and soft-spoken nature (soft-spoken may be a bit of an understatement where Kandi is concerned). My initial thoughts toward Kandi’s choices and actions can be summarized by the following:

WHY?

Why is she acting (or not acting) a certain way? What are her motivations? I wanted to know what makes her tick. What gets her out of bed in the morning? What are her limits?

As the story progresses, bits and pieces of Kandi’s nature are revealed until eventually the picture of her character begins to take form. Rather than overwhelm me with internal dialogue and counterproductive first-person exposition in a desperate attempt to make Kandi relatable, the author leaves me to work in order to understand and appreciate Kandi. But in the end, it makes the experience that much more rewarding.

Juan is a fantastic second lead, and helps anchor the story in a grounded reality. The dynamic contrast between him and Kandi makes the story worth reading. Kandi’s point of view is like witnessing something extraordinary, and Juan’s point of view gives me a chance to go home and tell all of my family and friends about it. That being said, Juan has some truly remarkable moments in his own right, so don’t get too comfortable.

Liquid Death has all the nuts and bolts that enable you to enjoy all of the flawed and complex characters it has to offer. The writing is captivating, succinct and thorough, but does not draw attention to itself. The environment quickly draws you in, and the color descriptors in particular are exquisite. Having read dozens of fantasy books where every moving image in my head consists of a hundred different shades of brown, grey, black and white, Liquid Death allowed me to read in color for the first time in quite a while. I will more than likely work on my next writing project with Liquid Death in hand, taking detailed notes on how to add elegant detail into everything from fancy clothing to stale school lunches. Did I mention that the colors in this book are outstanding?

Overall a fantastic read, and leaves me feeling like the story has only just started.

NOVA's Review

I love a good sci-fi/fantasy book, I also love when humans have powers and I love aliens and crazy bad guys. Liquid death has all of this! I’m left bewildered, curious, and pleasantly surprised after reading this book.

description

Liquid Death is a dark and twisted YA, that introduces two characters that I grew very fond of. Kandi and Juan both have particular powers. Juan possesses a superhuman strength aligned with the ability to read people’s mind and Kandi can master any power that you can think of. Fire? Yup. Blowing things up? Yes. Making your hand dematerialize out of thin air? Hell yes. She’s a jack of all trades.

I highly underestimated Kandi at first. She’s lived a life of torture, spent with people willing to hurt her to find out where she comes from and why she’s special. She’s scarred, damaged and appears broken. But let me tell you, I will never make the mistake of underestimating her again! Her powers are outstanding. Although sometimes I did want to slap her. For such a powerful person she spent a good portion of the book numb, without using her powers. Although I understand, she could have used them sooner and avoided a lot of torture. She's still a Badass though!!

Juan was a breath of fresh air in this otherwise, very dark book. He’s a character that feels drawn to Kandi for some inexplicable reason, and he’s willing to protect her at any cost. He’s strong, committed and very interesting. The romance between the two is very fleeting but it’s there. I cannot wait to see it grow!

The story behind these characters is very interesting. We have an organization founded by Kandi’s father, that’s using her blood to heal other humans from both mental and physical diseases. By doing so they turn children and young kids into less powerful versions of Kandi.

This organization is shady AF from the very start. They’re willing to kill, torture, burn and dismantle any person in order to find out Kandi’s true origins. I found myself hating the doctors inside the organization but thriving on their monstrosity and cruelty. It’s very hard to see evil characters written in an alluring way, and the author did just that. They were brilliant bad guys, wonderfully built and every time they suffered, I cheered.

And if you think the doctors are evil, then Kandi’s father will surprise you. His death itself. Literally. He’s the evilest character ever! I loved him.

The world building in the book it’s truly great. It has a unique damaged plot that slowly pulls itself back together. The writing is very simple, yet straight to the point and the story keeps you hooked until the last page, mainly due to the POV’s changing from Kandi to Juan. It has plenty of action, a tiny bit of romance and incredible bond and loyalty between Kandi and Juan. I can’t wait for the next book!

🌠🌠Amazing first in series 🌠🌠
Not even sure what genre to put this in!
It truly has a touch of everything - Excellent presentation and characterization that flows from opening scene to the closing.

Suspense - I was entranced from beginning to end - this is one of those reads that had me constantly battling my inner child to keep from peeking ahead. There are so many hidden clues and agendas that kept me theorizing with every new page turn and plot twist.
Angst- all in the name of science mind you 😡 - the antagonists in this tale will cause your stomach to clench and your breath to hitch They are a blend of the "sacrifices must be made for the good of the many" and the more subtle maleficient that needs no justification for his deeds beyond personal fulfillment
Mystery - wondering where and what (don't want to give spoilers) was one of my greatest questions throughout this story.
Characters -
Kandi is our female lead - well crafted, bright personality - I admit in the beginning I kept trying to decipher the whys behind some of her behaviors, it was driving me nuts - OMG! Wait until that bomb drops.
Juan is our male lead - emotionally driven, very aware of those around him.
All of the lead and supporting characters are well crafted and intricately detailed -I found it easy to connect with them on an emotional level.
I do not feel the blurb did this book justice. I was hooked from the opening scene - the turmoil that simmers below the surface story - the affliction of the antagonists - an overall intense and engaging read

Part horror, part fantasy, all sci-fi.

This book was a fascinating read. The opening was confusing and jarring, but purposefully so, and the plot was full of mysteries that propelled me forward.

I was never bored at any point in this book, reading a good chunk of it all at once. Switching between the two POVs was quite helpful, as each character had a different understanding of events that came together to progress and unlock the story.

The clues were well placed enough that I was able to figure out what was going on before the conclusion, but there were still enough surprises to keep me satisfied. The ending was neatly done, the epilogue clearly leading into further stories, but working surprisingly well as a stand-alone.

I really enjoyed riding along on Kandi and Juan's journeys, seeing how their pasts both hindered them and helped them overcome the seemingly insurmountable challenges they had to overcome. In the middle of the wild and fantastical sci-fi events, there was a solid human element that grounded the story and made it extremely compelling.

Great imagery

Very precise language and details with great imagery - the bloody scenes can be a little much. Suspenseful story, keeps you reading, but sometimes hard to follow.
Story reminds me of Michael Vey along with Dangerous by Shannon Hale.

"Where does courage come from? Sheer ignorance? Is that all it takes to own bravery – voluntary naivety?"

★★★✩✩½

I was offered this book by Mitzi C. in exchange of an honest review.

I want to start with how gorgeous the cover is and how good the concept of this story is. Especially the latter was the thing that made me really excited to read this. The story overall was really cool and lived up to that concept, though the first half was slower than I prefer. It is a shame really, as the second half was much more action packed and felt a bit rushed even. The story was worth a full four stars, but the slow first half/relative fast second half could have been a bit more balanced and made me go with three and a half stars. It is still a really enjoying read and that I gave it less than four stars shouldn't scare you off for enough reasons.

The characters in this book are really lovable and the MC's really grow on you. Kandi is a sweet girl, but is alone against the world and isn't really capable of having friends or social contact in general, partly because of her powers. Then you have Juan, a half-blood Latino that wants to join a local gang to fit in, but doesn't fit in anyway as he is different, kills his dad (for a pretty good reason!) and is generally misunderstood. Both characters meet through cleverly orchestrated circumstances and it is really special how these characters interact, even when Kandi is mute for most of the book. The dynamics of these characters together and against all other characters is really something that has me hooked for more story about them.

I would definitely recommend this book to people who like magic, aliens and space, as Liquid Death has a fair share of all those things and a really good balance between them. This YA, however, is a late-YA as the contents are suited for mature young adults.
I do want to leave a triggerwarning here: Kandi is full of anxiety and trauma and you experience all of that first row. I did have a little trouble reading about her anxiety as I was feeling really stressed and anxious about school, some stuff that happened earlier that week and my general mental health at that point. I recommend people who experience anxiety on a more frequent base to be careful with this book as books are supposed to be relaxing, not confronting.

Though I had some issues with the pacing, I really enjoyed reading this book. The story grew on me and so did the characters. I feel like the second book is going to open up a whole new direction for the story and I am actually really curious about what will happen next. When it comes to debuts, I am able to look through things that may bother me now, but are probably gone in the author's second book (and so far I have always been right!), and this book is no different as I looking forward to exploring more of this story in the sequel.

Okay, this is an honest review. Also my own opinions on my personal taste in writing. Saying this I will start with my judging forms to help me:
Does the story make sense (no logical or continuity errors. Easy to follow or not.): This book you had to pay so close attention to reading it. Not one you can listen to and get things done. You have to pay attention, it's so deep, so dark, so beyond comprehension that you lose the sense if you don't pay attention. Personally, for me, it made no sense till maybe the end. I jumped from one scene to another. It didn't seem to flow. I give this a 2-3 star.

Fits the theme: It does fit the theme of sci-fi almost too well. It's in a realm literally of its own. I left the rating part off because my usual judging is up to pg-13. So no sex, nothing like that, but blood, and gore it's off the chart. I don't mind blood, in fact, give me blood any day over buggers, or stomach contents, however, the amount and content in this book actually came close to making me sick.

Not error-filled: Not one. If this book was rated solely on errors it would be off the charts star wise. I think it was better than a mechanical computer on this front. It was almost robotic in nature. 5

Actually has a story with a clear arc and resolution: Um, I think it did. Some revelatory information came over three-quarters of the way through. I think there were pieces of this throughout the book and was covered with other stuff. 3.5

Actually has characters with definable characteristics: Yes. However, you had to pay attention to who's point of view each chapter started with or you got lost on who was the main point of view. Only because they intertwined throughout the story. Each character was clear and definable, yes. 4.5

Rate the writing (voice, flow, ease of reading, comes across as professional, etc): This one is not easy to rate at all. Voice is relative meaning it can be influenced by knowing the person (or think you do) and by the presentation. Also influenced by your mood that day or days your reading it. Life going on at the time of reading. I will say this is not my favorite genre. This isn't even a genre I usually read. Having said that I think this is a genre all it's own. 3. Flow it really didn't flow that easily. Ease of reading- no. You had to pay attention or you got lost. It was intellectually deep, good yes, however, it limits your readers. Comes across as professional- this is also relative. If it was based on perfectly error-free 5 (almost robotic) it's off the charts. Connection ability not so much till maybe the middle then it's about a 3. So this one is hard to judge with this book.

Final comments: My first thought, because as an author I know anything you write comes from within the person writing. Even I have written a disturbing story, but this goes beyond disturbing. I often wondered how I could help this person in her real life.
This story takes a special kind of taste. Not necessarily mine, but I wanted to give it a chance. A real chance.
Curse free well no F-bombs which is a breaker for me and no sex, both really good things. What you do need to be prepared for is mentally disturbing scenes, visuals, lots and lots and lots of blood. It's not even a vampire book. Like I said it's in a league of its own. I can't even give a decent synopsis so just read hers. I will say she's an alien and it's a she who starts it. I didn't have this information so I thought it was about deep dark sexual abuse, which it has in it as well.

Don't take my word for anything, this is my opinion and my personal experience. I am interested to read the next one just to see if it gets better, meaning less blood, and maybe a little romance. It's purely curiosity. I'm not emotionally invested in the book. average rating 3.4-3.5.
