The Beast: A Werewolf Horror

Rate this book

If there’s no such thing as werewolves then why are all my friends dead?

A werewolf is preying upon the denizens of a small town. The only people who know what it is, who understand what is happening, are children. A group of third graders isn't exactly the most credible source of information, especially when it comes to the fantastical. They grow up being ridiculed, shunned, bullied and mistreated by their peers and the broader community.

Years later it returns, but this time Thomas and his friends are prepared for it. As the body count rises and the tension mounts throughout the town, only The Freaks (as they call themselves), have come to terms with what it is. After all, they have seen it before. They have seen the blood it spilled firsthand.

Nobody is above suspicion. Not even family members. Thomas and his friends cannot trust anyone, must suspect everyone. As children, they learned the truth. As grown werewolf hunters, they must use every bit of courage they have to face the monster. Nothing short of killing it will suffice.

Inspired by horror stories and movies from when Werewolves were actually scary. When shifters had fangs. When monsters spilled blood and guts, and nobody cared how nice their abs were. An homage to Stephen King's Cycle of the Werewolf and movies such as An American Werewolf in London, and the Howling series, The Beast will curdle your blood with fear.

A quick read, this novelette is intended to be devoured in one or two sittings. In the tradition of Edgar Alan Poe, this story should take just between one-half hour and one hour to finish. Primarily it is a reaction to the lack of good werewolf stories out there on the market today. With speculative fiction taking some very bold, yet unnecessary turns in the twenty-first century, The Beast is an attempt to seize on something purer. Sure, weredragon, alien invasion, sci-fi may be doing great and dominating today's ebook market, but there is something to be said for the kinds of stories that were popular when I was a kid; the kind with fangs, the kind that bite.

“The Beast is one hell of a wild ride. One of the best horror stories I have read in a very long time. I had forgotten just how scary werewolves could actually be. An instant classic.” - the author's totally biased friend.

Good read.

This was a really good book. It’s short but it did have a surprise ending that I didn’t see coming. I gave it 5 stars because it was a great story with a good twist on the ending

A great werewolf tale

This book has it all, werewolves, mystery, sadness. It is a great story and I just realized I have the second book and I definitely need to dive into it. I like the mystery of figuring out who it is also. I was surprised by how well it was written also and how it never got stagnant. Very fast paced I absolutely loved it!!!!!!

I like the book i lovee werewolfs and vampires i think this book was a good book about werewolfs i am writing my own book it's not about werewolfs it's about both and how u can change when u want

I give it 5stars it's unique it's awesome and I think it would be cooler if there were a vampire book with werewolfs and they aren't about fighting each other because of a silly fude that happened 1 million years ago or so

Violence Rating: 3/5 - Full Moon Frenzy

Loved it!. A quick read but very engaging and fun. More than enough to scratch that werewolf itch.

I loved the atmosphere, the vibe, it reminded me of IT or Stranger Things. The teenagers are entertaining and amusing in their naivety, but even more so likable because of their bravery and borderline insanity, a pure testament to that innocent, foolish courage of youth. Even though it's a very short story, I can't say it missed anything for what it is: there are likable, relatable characters, brave kids, dodgy, creepy adults, scary werewolves, school bullies, dying friends, you name it.

When I read about the kids trying to learn how to fight off a werewolf from fiction books, it just reminded me of the Stranger Things kids with their funny ideas and trying to understand the unknown through their games. It's really beautiful, nostalgic, and makes you go back in time to your own childhood.

And the twists, wow, I thought I got it right, but it was just half true, there's so much more and I absolutely loved how it ended. I'll surely get the other 2 books, I have to read more of this.

The writing style and narrative is also engaging, fast paced, and realistic for the set timeframe (the 80s).

It got it all and it ticked pretty much all the check boxes a short story could. For its category, it deserves 5 stars.

Like it but disappointed

I have good positives and bad negative about this book. Here is reason I have good positives about the book 1. It's good and I like characters I am surprised about find out who was werewolf I didn't expect it be her I really thought be either Cindy or one of other bullies. Here is reason why I have negative and give this book three stars for rate because doesn't tell how candi turn into werewolf that's why disappointed about it and why make good kid be bad guy? Should it be other around make one of bullies be bad guy because they have ugly personality? Here is another thing I am disappointed about story didn't tell how Thomas figure out that who was werewolf also didn't tell how Thomas uncle know everything. Oh yeah what uncle mean by welcome to community to Thomas? I like author and his books I just wish give more details and give back story about how candi turn to werewolf and everything else need tell more stuff for story.

I gave this book a one-star rating and, for the first time, wished there was a negative rating. I would surely have given it one. This is not a novel, it isn't even a novella. It is little more than would be considered a chapter of a book.
The writing is almost amateurish, even juvenile. There is relatively little more of a plot than there is a werewolf and no depth whatsoever to any of the characters. It's almost like reading dialogue from a comic book. I can only assume that the author was aiming for the young adult audience. And, by young adult, I mean pre-adolescent and replete with toilet humor that only a child would find amusing. There are two other "books" in this werewolf series to continue the lame storyline, but one book was all I needed to realize what a colossal waste of time any further reading would be.

3 1\2 Stars

3 youngsters one first grader and two third graders see a werewolf. Of course no one believes them. The rest of the book Thomas (one of the three) is trying to figure out who the werewolf is. The book is short more of a novella, I wouldn't have been happy with the $2.99 price for a short story but since I'm kindle unlimited it didn't matter that much. Good enough that I'll read the next one.

It was okay. Hope the next one gets a little better. Seemed like it was a bit rushed, and it all happening with elementary kids really didn't land with me. There was a GIANT jump in time that threw the story out of balance IMO. It also seemed that there was gore for the sake of gore. Over all an Okay rushed story.

what a read!

I haven’t read a werewolf book like this in ages. The best part is that there are two more books to go. If they’re anywhere near as good as this one Davidson is the go to author for werewolves. Kudos to the book covers artwork as well!

Nice job!

Loved it.
To short to build a relationship with the characters. Course they were dead rather quickly. Keep going on the series!

hunting werewolves is not far sissys. This book by Aleister Davidson is traditional horror as in death by Werewolf. Who are the werewolves when they are are not furry and full of teeth. that is what these werewolf hunters are figuring out. good story reads fast and reminds me that traditional monsters are still scary as hell.
