Victor Selo had blown up his life. A wannabe rock star turned tech savant, he'd wagered his Silicon Valley executive position on a corporate inside straight and lost. Having security escort him out of the building was the best thing that happened to him that day. The rest left him in the hospital, broken, broke, and with no prospects.
That's when a shadowy stranger with questionable motives came with an offer: a chance to get his life back - and better - if he simply cooperates. It would require becoming invisible for a while, but he would be hiding in the spotlight, playing guitar in a Vegas cover band. Reluctantly, Victor accepts and begins an odyssey he never could have imagined. One that involves a charismatic lead singer who owns the stage but aspires to own an Elvis wedding chapel, a mesmerizing woman who can play anything on her keyboards and can really play with Victor's head, and two specters from his old life offering competing devil's bargains. Suddenly, multiple futures are opening up in front of Victor. All of them offer opportunity - and each comes with potentially catastrophic risk.
Populated with a wide array of colorful characters, brimming with reflections on everything from love to God to the price of commitment, and backed by a great soundtrack, From Nothing is an endlessly engaging work of fiction that will resonate like your favorite song.

This book captured me from the beginning. I couldn't put it down, and like every great book I've read, I was sad to say goodbye to the characters at the conclusion. This is a fascinating adventure thriller especially for those who are fascinated by what goes on inside large tech companies, love music and want to go behind the curtain into the life of a musician performing in a band. All of Ken's books take me on a great ride, make me think, surprise me and teach me a few things. This is the most exciting ride yet - great writing, characters and story with unexpected twists and turns that left me totally satisfied at the end. Don't miss this great read!
The very apt title of this novel, “From Nothing” is a nod to the Billy Preston song lyrics, “Nothing From Nothing Leaves Nothing”. Like another famous Preston song question, “Will it go round in circles?”, Ken Goldstein has a compelling story to tell— about breaking out of life’s grooves/habits/ruts we all wallow in, the search for faith, and how his downtrodden character, Victor, finally finds himself.
Although billed as a story about technology, that is simply the backdrop to the real quest of the amateur-musician-turned-software-manager to handle one crisis after another without falling apart or failing others. His life’s playlist of songs dominates the story, and introduces Goldstein’s most memorable character, “The Act”, whose focused, clear-eyed choices and anticipation of all possible consequences serve as a unique counterpoint to Victor’s endless vacillations. With vivid imagery and creative metaphors, Goldstein’s writing packs a wallop, bringing the reader on a rock-n-roll journey from the mudflats of the San Francisco Bay to a progression of increasingly higher profile venues.
Goldstein introduces a unique concept, paralleling the talents, creativity, and personality quirks of musicians to that of software coders. While that is something I had never considered before, even with my exposure to many Silicon Valley engineers, I agree with his premise that it takes a very unique individual to blend dedication, focus, and a belief in self to crank out truly innovative content—whether music or the latest app.
“From Nothing” is worth your time and energy to explore a part of the music world that shapes so many of our choices, from teenage years to that last trip to a dance joint on a journey down memory lane.
A page turner from beginning to end. If you are a musician or a wannabe musician, an entrepreneur or a wannabe entrepreneur, a manager or a wannabe manager, or anyone else, it's a must read!
From Nothing by Ken Goldstein is unlike any novel I have read. It carries so much punch and intrigue that I could not put it down. The tale carries me through one man's journey from a corporate world to the lifestyle of a rock star. This book shows what happens when the main character rolls like a dice on a gambling table. The chances are fifty-fifty and the risks are high. An opportunity of taking a new road to life comes with consequences. But this character keeps rolling; making the best with each roll. I liked the do not look back attitude and how Victor moves forward despite his past life being destroyed. The remaining cast varied in positions and levels of life. It was quite interesting to follow them. The main focus was redemption for Victor. It was a long yet tough journey for him, whether he found it or not, is up for discovery. I enjoyed watching Victor grow as a man throughout novel. He went from being someone to nothing then to somebody going somewhere. His future held hope. Overall, I would recommend this read to all. There's a little of everything for readers to like, relate to, and connect with...
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
From the beginning this book had me hooked. Victor Selo, a software developer and formidable boss to some pretty awesome employees, has a passion for something other than software: Rock music! Selo faces tough decisions that may lead to dire consequences but knows he is surrounded by great people who inspire him and stand by him. This page-turner details corruption in Silicon Valley and Selo's journey through his life as a tech guru and ambitious musician. But just like any other great story, life gets in the way. Can Selo overcome?
This was my first Goldstein read but I will be sure to pick up his other works. I highly recommend this read to anybody who wishes to be taken down a roller coaster of fun and awe.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read, enjoys music, has an interest in the world of business and technology, likes a good mystery story, believes in love, and understands the importance of healing old wounds. This book works on all these levels. I thought I'd give it a quick look see, but found I wanted to read a little more each night before I went to bed. Then I couldn't put it down. And finally I wanted to begin reading it again after I finished. Plus, there are some twists and unexpected turns that will make you want to talk to the author in person and ask him how he did that. All in all I can tell you, you have a treat in store with From Nothing.
Victor Selo’s life has bombed out and recovered twice. After the first time when he’s at rock bottom, he turns to playing lead and support guitar in bar bands. It’s popular music, especially “oldies but goodies” that most baby boomers loved and still love. Now after multiple years working in the tech business in Silicon Valley, in which he and his buddies devise a way to create apps for people to buy individual song hits. Technology develops so rapidly that he knows the company has to expand and move up several notches to stay on top of the music tech game. Rapidly he realizes that due to the narrow-minded attitudes and thinking of the “bosses,” the company is about to go bust. Victor Selo, however, has a great deal of anger built up inside and when his bosses are unresponsive to his suggestions and he discovers a competitor wants to buy them out just to destroy them, all hell breaks loose. After a totally engaged, violent scene, Victor Selo is fired. Not only is he canned but several days later he is “taught a lesson” with a brutal beating that almost kills him. He plans to run away but instead follows his gut. Returning to the job of guitar performer in a cover band, Vic meets several band members with sensitive and controlling ideas of how to climb the ladder to success. The lead singer who owns the group also sings an Elvis “wedding” gig in Los Angeles and a female singer who has some very creative ideas is stifled until Vic comes alone. The conflict continues until finally Vic, who seems destined to lead wherever he is, gets them to a critical breaking point where they must change or separate. At the same time, the opponents from his earlier techie life keep appearing making him unbelievable, flush offers of which he wants no part. The end is sheer stunning fiction. From Nothing… will remain in your mind long after you’re done reading. It’s got great ideas, mind-blowing tension, and adventure in every scene. It also contains music lyrics from an amazing playlist almost everyone up to the 21st Century can appreciate and rock along with. Some people are born leaders and Victor Selo is a fine heroic character who never falters in leading other men and women upward and onward! Nice job, Ken Goldstein!
It is however about really good Music. It is about Big Business. It is about Dirty Business dealings. It is about the Fork in the Road taken. It is about the Fork in the Road not Taken. It is about Friendship. It is about Relationships. It is about Self Doubt. It is about Regrets. It is about the world of Technology. It Is about Redemption. It is about Vegas. Oh and did I say it is about really good Music!
But mostly it’s about a man named Victor Selo This is a 300-page thrill ride that takes readers behind boardroom doors and into the back alleys and underhanded tactics of a fictional, but completely authentic, Silicon Valley acquisition. The Author Ken Goldstein seamlessly blends backroom private equity deals, coders bent on revenge and classic rock legends into a compelling novel that crosses between cyber thriller, a financial thriller, and rock-and-roll nostalgia.
I absolutely loved this book.Victor is a man that has decisions to make. Does he want to be a big shot executive? Does he stay with Claire?Does he try to save his company ? Does he just give it all up and Play!
From the start of this book the author grabs you. He created a main character in Victor you just want to root for. I can kind of equate Vic to Charlie Brown. It seems he just can’t win. Just can’t kick that elusive football. He’s full of doubt about decisions he’s made in the past and decision he needs to make. From the chaotic board room meeting with flying laptops to the lounges of Las Vegas Victor is on a wild ride.
It did start a little slow for me but that was only the first few pages and come to find out very relative to the story and what makes Victor tick. For anyone that’s ever dreamed of being a star and “PLAYING” on the big stage this is the book for you. The ending was a big surprise for me I still don’t know if I like it. (I really liked Synthia with an S) but I guess that’s the way it had to be.
This is one of the best books I’ve had the pleasure to review in a long time The best advice I can give to you folks is go out and get this book
As I thoroughly enjoyed the messy ride through Silicon Valley of Ken Goldstein’s This is Rage (read my review), which I recommend if you haven’t picked it up, I was pleased to get an ARC of his new book From Nothing.
From Nothing is many things - the book’s title, the rags-to-riches-to rags story of Victor Selo, a self-made success grown from foster homes to third-rate rock singer to Silicon Valley middle man with stock options, and the band’s name.
That’s right, there’s a band.
I loved the satire exposing the inner workings of tech in This is Rage, so I expected to enjoy Victor’s tech drama the most. He finds himself a key player in a corporate takeover of his company, with everyone from Wall Street bankers to board members to his boss to engineers with killer viruses in their pockets looking to him for the next move.
Due to his musical background, he finds himself hiding out amidst a Las Vegas cover band, From Nothing. Surprisingly, the section featuring Victor’s time with the band is where the story came alive to me. Not in Victor Selo’s love of classic rock, but in visionary lead singer Torch and the rest of the band, as Victor fills in on guitar, living in a Vegas world far from the Marin County one he is accompanied with.
I wish I could say I loved From Nothing as much as This is Rage, but the book felt rough to me. I often glanced ahead, thinking that Victor’s narration could benefit from some heavy editing. It also started with a romance that it was difficult for me, as the reader, to buy. Victor pines for a woman he said goodbye to in the opening chapter, and the plot is pulled throughout the book, but I’m not sure it worked.
I think the folks that would enjoy this book most are those who once played rock music themselves or are fans of live rock shows. The band itself, and the stories of the club opening up around them and their music bringing it to life, are thoroughly enjoyable.
Book Review: An intriguing adventure from tech company to bar band.
From Nothing: A novel of technology, bar music and redemption By Ken Goldstein
When board room antics force Victor Selo to re-evaluate his life, he finds himself going back to his roots. He started out in music trying to find his big break when an opportunity fell into his lap. Silicon Valley called offering him an executive position. When faced with a fork in his life he took the less risky path with a greater chance of success. Five years later he didn’t recognize his life and he certainly didn’t expect to find himself escorted by security from the company he came to love.
Nursing his wounds at the local bar secured him a stay at the hospital when his day turned from disappointing to tragic. Then a mysterious man arrived to throw him a lifeline letting him start over from his previous music life. Not everyone gets a chance to reinvent themselves or return to the beginning before the forked path; giving one an opportunity to re-evaluate previous decisions. Victor Selo became one so lucky.
Author Ken Goldstein takes the reader on a musical journey filled with backstage chaos, intrigue and a genuine hope that Victor will succeed. When Victor appears to be down on his luck, he becomes the underdog the reader will root for. From Nothing is a thrill ride story with larger than life characters that pull you along for the ride; you can’t put it down until you turn the last page.
From Nothing is Ken Goldstein’s third novel. Be sure to visit his webpage for further information regarding his other novels. Www.kengoldsteinauthor.com

As a software developer and wannabe musician for most of my life, I knew this book would speak to me before I even opened it. And did it ever! I was immediately engrossed with the main character who seemed eerily familiar. The story grabs you and pulls you right in. It's one of those books where you can't stop at the end of a chapter. You have to start the next chapter to see what direction things are going in, and hope there's at least a slight lull to let you resume your real life for a while.
As the story evolves and more characters are introduced, each one is masterfully introduced. There's no doubt in your mind who they are and why they belong in the story. Moreover, you get the sense that every other reader will have the same mental images of the same characters. Not sure if that will make it easier or harder to cast the sure-to-be-forthcoming Hollywood adaptation!
When I picked the book up a second time, I didn't put it down until the last page was turned. And what a few last pages that was. Ken Goldstein has always been a fabulous writer, but this may be his best work yet. Or at least until the next one. Bravo.
In "From Nothing" , author Ken Goldstein deftly maneuvers from music super-fan to tech business insider and back again, while masterfully crafting a page-turning tale of dirty tech deals gone wrong, bar cover band redemption, and man's eternal quest for God and his place in a universe predicated on chaos.
If you are a music fan, especially of live music and the golden age of Classic Rock, then you will love how Goldstein references and places musical gems along the way as we accompany main character Victor Selo through his personal journey. Goldstein's dialogue, characters, and their actions ring particularly true and all the more plausible, and in some cases abhorrent, because of Ken's OTHER career within the tech industry as an advisor to start ups and executive at various tech, media, and e-commerce companies.
"From Nothing" is a GREAT read for classic rock fans, tech professionals, business people, and readers alike who enjoy compelling characters, fly on the wall dialogue, and a surprise cameo from a rock legend or two.
From Nothing by Ken Goldstein Really enjoy the world of coding and the atmosphere surrounding their every day. Love team effort when those who had stood up for them are banished and then beaten, almost to death. Events occur and his whole life changes and I love the music injections. It's my favorite bands, genres and lyrics from my own playlists! Mix the coding and music together and this is a book for everybody. Has it all and then some, especially the features added at the end of the book, discography. Inner workings of a company, the music, the travel and the camaraderie of the teams. Can't wait to read the author's other works. He knows how to tell an interesting story. Received this review copy from The Story Plant and this is my honest opinion.
Ken Goldstein’s “From Nothing” surprises and touches. I loved “From Nothing” which tells the story of Victor on his transformational journey of redemption in the worlds of high tech and rock and roll. Ken creates that unique inventive mash up of corporate business and high tech apps along with his passions for classic rock and baseball. Consequently, his book has a deeply personal feel and purpose. His narrative voice is both self-aware and compassionate.
“From Nothing” is poignantly about retiring the old lyrics of life, and creating that new song. After all, one can only truly create “From Nothing”.
"From Nothing: A Novel of Technology, Bar Music, and Redemption" by Ken Goldstein...I read an early draft of this book: I couldn't put it down and read into the night. It's a great tale about a fellow, Victor Selo, a software developer who like so many other developers has another passion...Rock. But this is the story of decisions and consequences that often lead to disastrous results for Victor as well as those he comes into contact with. Do business and art mix?
Victor Selo is a man whose passions more often than not derail his life. This is a fast-paced novel with great characters and plot lines that come together with an explosive climax that will rock you!
From Nothing was difficult for me to start, but once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. It's a fascinating tale of corruption in Silicon Valley, the realities of taking a leap of faith in the music industry, but mostly, it's the story of a solid human being who, in spite of his challenged background, steers a path of truth amidst all the wreckage of business and often the people around him. His background provides resilience and a sense of loyalty to those who stand by him. I will say, though, that the copy sits by my computer so I can finish researching the music lyric references!
Amazing read from start to finish. Ken Goldstein does it again with his third book. Kept me completely engaged till all hours of the night. The story takes you through an unexpected journey, from the tech world, to music entertainment. Mr. Goldstien does a superb job with character building, holding your attention at all time. I had a very hard time putting the book down. A novel that won't disappoint!
This was a first reads giveaway. It was an okay read- not great, but not horrible. The writing was decent, as was the storyline, but I struggled to really get into the book. Maybe if I had read it a different time I may have enjoyed it better. I could easily recommend it for the person looking needing a filler book- those waiting on a sequel or who just need something to read to fill in a gap between books.
Such a great read... enjoyed it thoroughly. Great characters, a plot that kept you intrigued and involved, an original concept that works from start to finish. Highly recommend.
Wow! “From Nothing” is a whirlwind page turner. Like a finely crafted song, it’s got a melody that won’t let go from the opening note to the closing chorus.
Book Review: "From Nothing: A Novel of Technology, Bar Music, and Redemption" by Ken Goldstein
It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that made me sleep deprived, but honestly, I could not put this book down. I was delighted by the action, suspense, conflicts and the twists that kept me turning the page through the night into dawn.
The story’s hero, Victor Selo, is complicated, damaged (physically and emotionally), loveable and hate-able, musician and visionary, and I became his fan. Growing up in the foster care system, the music Victor listened to became his inner solace and shelter as he withdrew inside himself. Later in life, the tunes and particularly the lyrics of rock classics would become his source of strength and sanity. As he matured from boy to man music became Victor’s gift and drove him towards the creative and satisfying life he wanted but internally doesn’t believe he deserves.
Just like most talented musicians who aren’t able to sustain a livable income playing gigs, Victor developed other skills to find a good paying day job. Victor’s interest, aptitude, and knowledge of technology, combined with his music background landed him a plum position as VP, Product Management at Global Harmonics, a silicon valley based tech company. His professional techno-life crashes dramatically and left Victor the opportunity for redemption through an almost impossible set of risks and choices.
Filled with characters, locations and settings from the seedy to the sublime, “From Nothing” leads the reader through a powerfully vivid tour of events and revelations that will surprise you as it surprised me. I was moved by the depth of emotion and heart in the story as well.
“From Nothing” is nothing short of an exciting techno-thriller with a killer soundtrack. It’s a novel that plays like your all-time favorite song. Ken Goldstein has written a hit that you will want in your mix.
Don’t let the title fool you, FROM NOTHING is more than just an homage to tech and rock ‘n’ roll. Goldstein weaves a taut thriller and male fantasy genre—an invention all his own—that will leave you wanting more. From the tech scenes in Marin County to the rock ‘n’ roll scenes in Las Vegas and New York City, Goldstein expertly captures the mood in the rhythm of places that seem familiar yet disorienting, like a good/bad dream. I highly recommend FROM NOTHING as a read.
I did not care for this book at all. Hardly about Silicon Valley, as it takes place in Mill Valley and Las Vegas. There was a tremendous amount of repetition. (Sinthia with an S etc.). Also the main character’s interest in god was off-putting. Would not recommend this book to anyone else. Sorry.
