Vincent Malone #1

Santa Fe Mojo

Rate this book
Washed-up legal investigator Vincent Malone has come to Santa Fe in search of a new life. Instead, he finds himself drawn into a murder investigation when a high-profile LA sports agent turns up dead at the B&B where Vincent has found work.

Teaming up with an ancient gun-slinging lawyer (whom everyone thought was dead), Vincent investigates the agent's pro athlete clients, all of whom share a strong motive: the agent had just lost millions of dollars of their money in a botched investment. As the case grows more complicated, Vincent discovers Santa Fe might just be the right place to get his mojo back.

For fans of classic PI mysteries, where flawed men try their best to do good, and a colorful cast and unexpected twists keep you guessing right until the last page.

At the end of the line, washed up investigator Vincent Malone winds up in Santa Fe, where he takes a job driving a bus for B&B, to make some dough until he's eligible for social security.

Then a sports agent is murdered, and Malone investigates, actually coming alive for the first time in a long time.

Very noir-ish.

I would like to thank Netgalley and PurpleSage Books LLC for a review copy of Santa Fe Mojo, the first novel in a projected series to feature PI Vincent Malone.

Through a series of poor decisions Vincent has lost his business as a legal investigator in Denver so he decides to pack up and head for Albuquerque but on the way he sees an advert for a driver at the Blue Door Inn B&B in Santa Fe and, on a whim, applies for and gets the job. When a local sports agent is murdered suspicion falls on five of his clients whom he had assembled at the Blue Door Inn and when one is soon arrested it's not long before Vincent is working for the defence.

I thoroughly enjoyed Santa Fe Mojo which is an old fashioned mystery with a lighthearted feel to it. It is narrated in the third person, mostly from Vincent's point of view with a few other points of view interjected when the plot details require some fleshing out, but it has a first person summation at the end of many of the chapters where Vincent voices his thoughts on the preceding events. As he has a quirky, self deprecating voice these thoughts add a little light relief and intimacy to the novel and as such I think they are unusual and add much to the read. I love the summing up at the end of what happens to the main players after the novel ends. It settles any curiosity the reader may have and gives a vicarious sense of satisfaction when the not so good guys get some comeuppance.

The plot revolves around Vincent talking to witnesses and suspects in attempt to clear his client. As he is a take no prisoners kind of guy it doesn't always go smoothly but usually works. I enjoyed the friction and the pitting of wits against unwilling interviewees. I found it to be an absorbing read, and, no, I didn't work out the real perpetrator or motive until they were revealed. It is cleverly done.

The characters are mostly fun. Vincent is jaded and world weary but, somehow, the very nice people he meets in Santa Fe restore his mojo and zest for life. It is uplifting without being corny. The lawyer he ends up working for, Peter Tucker, is another unusual character. He comes out of retirement for the case and also gets his mojo back. Their relationship is initially sticky but mutual respect grows as the case goes on and they become friends. I hope he is in the next novel.

Santa Fe Mojo is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Santa Fe Mojo is an excellent police procedural set in - you guessed it! - Santa Fe, New Mexico. We are seeing more films and novels located in our beautiful state, for which I am grateful.

Malone is a divorced, broke, disbarred lawyer from Dallas and a retired private investigator with one positive recommendation from Denver. He was an excellent private investigator for lawyers in Denver and enjoyed the work but several severe bouts of gout put him to bed for weeks at a time and gave the impression that he was no longer dependable. Relocation seems to be necessary as the cost of living in Denver made retirement unfeasible. Malone accidentally finds work as a courtesy van driver for a new bed and breakfast in Santa Fe on his way to a possible relocation in Albuquerque.

Ted Clifton brings us a full complement of memorable protagonists, a well defined sense of location, and an intriguing mystery. He is an author I am happy to refer to friends and family, and one I will follow.

I received a free electronic edition from the Fussy Librarian and Ted Clifton. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

First, let me thank Goodreads and Amazon for awarding me this Kindle edition. Filled with damaged but likable characters like Victor Malone, the lead protagonist, an investigator who has relocated from Denver; and an old, should-be-retired lawyer who is a brilliant curmudgeon with a heart. At the center of it all is a murder mystery, of course, with a bunch of ego infested sports figures and their spouses who have been invited to stay at a brand new B & B in Santa Fe. Their agent has been murdered and all of them are suspects. To ease the tension Victor has also stumbled on a bit of romance that may develop in the future. And in that future I'm sure we will see more of the townspeople who are introduced in this book: the narrow-minded, elitist sheriff, the quite reasonable police chief, the guy who helps run the local relief center for the homeless, and various business men. No telling what Ted Clifton has in store for his next mystery adventure, but I am looking forward to the second installment in this series.

Very good "Who Dunnit" with a lot of legal action.

Malone is a disbarred attorney and washed up PI who takes a job as a driver for a B&B in Santa Fe. He soon gets involved in a murder mystery and uses his skills as an investigator to help the defense. The author inserts many characters in the novel, some of which are important and others are just red herrings. Many twists to keep the reader's interest. And something that many authors don't do, the epilogue gives the readers closure to all of the main characters. No loose ends.

Highly recommend for those who like legal and murder mysteries.

Vincent Malone, once a successful attorney, oops not anymore; once a successful PI, another career shot; now he drives a shuttle van for a B&B. how can he possibly screw that up. oh yea - there are people involved and Vincent doesn't play well with others. he would love to live a life of solitude, at least he thinks he does. he doesn't want people to talk to him - they might expect him to care - not in his wheelhouse. Vincent is a great character and the people along the way make this book worth the time to read. A++++

Interesting setting and characters. I loved that Malone’s life seemed to be starting all over again just when he was thinking he had nothing to offer and nothing to look forward to. Lots of really bad people mixed with good people making a bad mistake and not-great people becoming better people made this a great case study in humanity. Overall an enjoyable read and a good mix of police and lawyers.

Thirty years ago Vincent Malone had been an up-and-coming young attorney until personal demons and poor decisions led to his being a disbarred, unemployed drunk. Necessity led him to a career as a legal investigator – the kind of shady operative who was not above skirting the letter of the law from time to time. But, after years of playing fast and loose, the bottom fell out again and Malone found himself “a few years away from a full Social Security check” with nothing to show for it and no prospects.

All that gets setup as backstory in the first chapter as Malone decides to load up his car and start a new life in Albuquerque, New Mexico... Why Albuquerque? Well, why not? A stopover in Santa Fe leads to a temporary job as a courtesy transport driver for a bed & breakfast which, in turn, leads to him being caught smack dab in the middle of a murder case. And that's where the story begins.

Somewhere along the line, for whatever reason, I got the impression that this was going to be a gritty crime story... possibly a tense legal thriller... definitely something with a little “bite” to it. Such was not the case. Santa Fe Mojo is essentially a cozy mystery with a potty-mouth. I say that as someone who enjoys an occasional cozy and is not particularly sensitive to such language (having been known to utter more than my share of expletives on any given day).

Once I realized that this was not exactly what I had anticipated I adjusted my expectations and continued reading. At first it seemed like an interesting idea – I was intrigued – drop a hard-boiled character (Malone) into the middle of what was essentially a “cozy” and see where that goes... it really didn't go much of anywhere.

After the initial introductions the characters all become more-or-less a series of talking heads spouting expositional dialogue with little or no nuance. The kind of “As you know...” speeches usually seen in old-fashioned English mysteries and mediocre made-for-TV movies where one character must inform another of things they already know for the purpose of getting the information to the audience.

The characters never come to life. With very little exception all of them sound pretty much the same. It could have easily been the same person doing all the talking.

Add the fact that there is little actual investigating, no real tension or suspense, a plot that just kind of limps to the finish, and Santa Fe Mojo ends up being rather bland. It made me think of one of those mystery weekends that country inns used to stage for their guests entertainment. Not a bad thing if that's what interests you.

It doesn't interest me.

I give Santa Fe Mojo 2 and ½ stars. Since I'm not able to post half star ratings that gets rounded up to three stars.

This book contains adult language which some readers might find offensive.

EDIT: After writing up my review I took a look at what others had to say in their own reviews (I often do that), all I can say is we must have entirely different tastes and sensibilities. It may simply be a case of the wrong reader for the material. Regardless, I stand by my review.

***Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for allowing me the opportunity to read and review Santa Fe Mojo by providing me with a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review.

I want to thank Ted Clifton, author and Goodreads First Reads Giveaway for the eBook Kindle copy of Santa Fe Mojo that I won in the Giveaway.

Vincent Malone may be a washed-up legal investigator but when he moves to Santa Fe, New Mexico he finds his Santa Fe Mojo when he teams up with a tough old lawyer to get a famous baseball pitcher off of a murder charge.

The investigation is full of twists, tuns, leads and dead ends until from a gut feeling from Vincent Malone they get a confession from the real killer, who was a victim herself in the plot. Santa Fe gives Vincent a part-time job at a B&B as a van driver and the hop of a future with a smart sexy woman he meets during his investigation. The book is full of multiple sub-plots, interesting characters and antagonistic law enforcement officials plus lying, stealing, greed, cheating and misleading others.

I loved Santa Fe Mojo because until the end you didn't expect the identity of the murderer. Another bonus was the author included a paragraph about each main person in the plot and told how the outcome of the case changed their lives.

After winning the second book in this series from a Goodreads contest, I decided to read the first book before I tackled the 2nd. I always like to read a series in order and I'm glad I read this. I really liked Malone's character. Feeling that his career as a private investigator was basically sidelined by a health issue, he decides to pack it up and start a new life somewhere else. As luck would have it, he stumbled into a new job as a driver for a brand new Bed and Breakfast in Santa Fe. The job was easy, the owners were warm and friendly and the food was great...what could go wrong? But with the first group of guests there was already trouble. Seems the organizer of the meeting had lost some major investment money and the meeting was set up to break the news to the investors. A murder results and, just like that, Vince is right back to investigating again. This really put me in the mind of an old time detective novel in an updated setting. I'm ready to start the 2nd book!

Thank you to Goodreads for giving me an advanced reader copy of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to read the next Vincent Malone book. I have a feeling this will be my new favorite series. Ted Clifton's development of his characters was so rich, and he did it without me wanting to skim over them like I do in a lot of books. I definitely found myself rooting for Vincent, the down-on-his luck ex-lawyer turned private investigator, now part-time "Transportation Manager".
The storyline had me guessing and going down a couple of different paths before he revealed the killer. (who was not who I thought it was going to be!)

Go Vincent!!! I am so glad you got your MOJO back in Santa Fe.
You won't be disappointed if you pick up this book.

This book is awesome. I started reading and realized that I was late for an appointment and had to reschedule so that I could read more. Vincent Malone is an out of work attorney/Investigator and moves to cities that start with a D. When he finally settles for a bit and a new bed and breakfast that has just opened up as a driver, a man turns up dead. Vincent knows who threatened to kill him but did he actually do it? This is the first in this series and it is certainly an easy tomread storyline with characters that we could all relate to. The POV changes as you read but the author does a great job at weaving them throughout. I certainly recommend this novel to everyone!

Thanks to goodreads as well as the author for giving me this book in exchange for my honest review.

All the right stuff!

Variety of characters with good development. Vincent is a real person whose maturity is refreshing. The suspense is just right. I never had to put the book down because it was too stressing. Some romance but not explicit sex scenes. Some language, but it was at points of anger, not as though the characters didn't know how to speak without cursing. Good people, flawed people and improving people made a great mix!
Definitely reading more Ted Clifton!
PS editing was well done and not a lot of wasted words!

I got this book free on my Kindle. I really enjoyed reading it. The author's writing style was to my liking and he did not have a lot of extra narrative bogging down the story line.

I loved his main character, a guy who is not perfect but likeable and nice. He makes a few philosophical comments and every so often he says something humorous. I really liked this book!

It was an easy read but also interesting and fun.

Vincent Malone is running away. He ends up at a new Bed & Breakfast outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. He arrives just in time to be caught in the middle of a murder and its ensuing investigation. Can his skills as a legal investigator help solve the crime?

The characters were interesting, but could have used more depth and description. The plot is (unfortunately) character driven, and the facts are developed at a very slow pace. I hope future installments correct these issues.

Intriguing

A thrilling and intriguing story full of suspense. Great character development in a well-written book. The author did a great job of describing Santa Fe. Having been to Santa Fe several times, the description of the city was very accurate. I plan to read more books be Clifton.

I kinda liked it

It was an ok read. I didn’t really get involved with the characters. I was surprised on finding who the killer was. It came out of nowhere when the killer was unveiled, through nothing the main characters did. I like Santa Fe but it didn’t seem to take much of a part of the story. Don’t think I will try anything else by the author.

Santa Fe Mojo is the first book in the Vincent Malone series. This can be read as a standalone. There is violence...this is a murder mystery afterall. Part of me would categorize this as a cozy mystery. But there is a lot of swearing in the story that kind of negates that category. Still it was an interesting read.

Atmosphere capturer!

I gave it the rating I believe it should have. Frankly I left the book several times too much sports stuff that didn't interest me. But I was puzzled by the title. Only been to Santa Fe once and only for a very short time because didn't have enough money to enjoy it and still get where I needed to go. Felt the atmosphere in your book.

In a very snarky way, I enjoyed reading this book. It wasn't super deep. Half the characters could have been on the autism scale. Or grew up in Chicago eating lead paint. For reason, I didn't want to stop when the dogs were begging to go out. Fortunately, no accidents occurred while finishing this book. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Quick clean read

This book moves very quick without skipping details or failing to fully paint the narrative. It’s not a deep thought provoking book, but really entertaining. After reading a more serious perhaps complex story future ones by Mr. Clifton will fit nicely in my rotation.

Low 3 stars

I wanted to like this one more than I did. The pacing felt a bit slow initially and some of the style of narration didn't work for me. Parts of it were really distancing then it would have a closer section in italics, often end of chapter, that felt a bit like an MC diary entry. So while I liked parts of it, I just couldn't really get into it.

Interesting characters, great setting, well depicted and easy to read. Nice to get acquainted with this author who writes in an easy, believable style in our favorite part of the country, the Southwest, New Mexico especially being a fave location. Fast reading and enjoyable. Happy to recommend. Going on to book 2.

I enjoyed the book, the only thing that upset me, was the other guest at the B & B, were not well defined. The story and the main caricatures were described well and you felt that you knew them.

Mr Clifton crafted an irresistible margarita, with pro athletes, disappearing money and murder.

Vincent Malone had been a lawyer, married and respected, but his battle with alcohol, robbed him of all of that. He started drifting, in Denver, he became a legal investigator, but that soon ended.

On his way to Albuquerque, he reads a want ad about a driver for a B & B, in Santa Fe. He applied and got the job. Only here he finds himself mixed up in a murder.

Vincent Malone is kind of flawed, but lovable. It a great start for an entertaining series.
