Many people struggle with sensory processing difficulties. Regulating emotions, knowing when to eat, drink, go to the toilet, and feeling your breathing and heart rate all depend on our internal awareness. Interoception is critical to feel and understand what is going on inside of your body. However, when someone has difficulty processing interoception, knowledge of emotions and regulation of basic body functions can be interrupted causing great frustration. This book contains all you need to know about interoception including the most recent research. Easy to read explanations followed by helpful ideas you can use immediately after reading, make the book an invaluable addition to your collection. Each activity is carefully chosen for both adults and children and will counteract poor interoceptive awareness.
A nice overview of a very complex topic, written in a positive and digestible manner, by an expert in the field. The level of information was a bit above my 11-year-old, But kept an adult engaged for the most part. I personally would’ve appreciated a bit more science, and slightly a psychology, but I could see the motivation to make it a simple read, Which it was.
Recommended to me by an OT friend! While a lot of this is written in a way that is easy to read and accessible to a wide variety of audiences the beginning is where the research is. And to read that portion and understand it, I would recommend having some background knowledge in body systems, or brain development. If you're a teacher, studying to be a teacher, or a specialist who works in a school I highly suggest reading this one. It's a short, light read and way easier to process than a lot of textbooks or Professional Development books I've had to read over the years. If you're a parent looking for more information on this under talked about system the opening research portion might be tricky to get through if you aren't familiar with some of the terms, but everything after that is a great read on tips for helping the kids in your life!
*Note - I was not able to access the online resources mentioned in the edition I read.
This touches on some fascinating information but found it very hard to follow. Could be more clearly and logically structured. The implications of statements made were often hard to work out. I’m Cara is a great OT though and I do enjoy posts on the Pocket OT Facebook page.
