His Majesty's Hounds #13

Rescuing the Countess

Rate this book
A Countess unhappily married, a Viscount forbidden the one he loves, an accident that leads to death, an accusation, a highwayman’s plot uncovered, a love that defies all odds.

Maria Wollstonefort, Countess of Granville, has rapidly come to regret her marriage. For her husband’s mother is domineering, and makes her life a misery, while her husband does nothing to defend or support her. She despairs of ever being happy again.

Charles Barrington, Viscount Wareham, has loved Maria for many years, since they were children growing up as neighbours. But he was only a third son, until the wars changed everyone’s fortunes, and not seen as a suitable match for her. Now Maria is wedded to another, and he is a man in love, who can never act on that love. Life seems bleak, yet he cannot simply ignore Maria, no matter how much it hurts to see her, for he senses that she has troubles to deal with.

When he offers her unconditional support, should she call upon him, neither of them expect that to ever happen. But when gossip, highwaymen and accidents come into play, he finds himself, and his family, called upon to save her.

Can either of them be happy? Will fate deliver a way for their lost love to grow again? Or will death steal everything from them both?

A woman unhappy in her marriage and a man who has loved her forever. Is there any hope for them? Maria grew up in a wonderful family but had none of that happiness with her husband and awful mother in law. Charles had always cared for Maria and could not stand seeing her so unhappy. In an unexpected turn, her husband is in an accident and perishes. Her family and Charles come to her aid and life begins changing. But is everything as it seems? Such an intriguing story of secrets hidden, strong emotions of hope and fear and two wonderful characters that try to find each other. This was really an entertaining read from beginning to end as another installment of His Majesty's Hounds!

NO TURNING BACK TIME!!!
Richmond pulls out all the stops on this page turning bombshell. You have it all. You have all the action, steady paced, suspense as well as fear and loss. She brings her gifts in full display as she lays out a strong storyline that will captivate from the start. The characters and scenes were intriguing, complex and realistic. With such vividly detailed and descriptive scenes that it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Twists and turns abound with nerve racking and dangerous results. You can't help but fall in love with the main characters and the love they share is so pure you find yourself rooting for their success. Richmond brought this read to life flawlessly. Great job Richmond, thanks so much for sharing this awesome read with us.

Maria was once part of a loving family, since her marriage, she has come to know despair and humiliation with her new family. Charles has loved Maria since they were children and is sad to see how unhappy she is in her life. When calamity strikes, Charles and Maria’s parents and siblings come to her defense. An intriguing story of despair, humiliation, secrets, fear, hope and love. Great plot and storyline, with wonderful main characters and some not so wonderful secondary ones. This story keeps your interest from page one and is a fantastic addition to the series.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was my first book by Arietta Richmond, which I received pre-release. I found the first third a bit slow and sombre, but it was well worth persevering as the love story that unfolded was tender, genuine and moving, with good chemistry. I liked the main characters a lot - though I often felt like urging Maria to stand up for herself, it became increasingly clear that she had very little choice but to keep quiet, and I enjoyed watching her gradually bloom and gain confidence throughout the rest of the book. Charles was very charming and kind and it was a delight to watch the romance unfold with lots of sweet scenes. Recommended! :)

This moral of this story is take a good look at the in-laws before you marry, particularly if you are going to live with them! What a horror of a mother in law, Maria had! Her husband, Edmund , wasn’t one for confrontation and he was in a difficult position. In one way I felt sorry for him but I also wanted him to take a stand. Luckily for Maria, she had family and one particular friend to help her. This was an entertaining read. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A Loveless Marriage.
In marrying for status and to please her parents, Maria finds herself miserable. Her mother in law is a bully and her husband a coward and her life becomes extremely restrictive. Luckily for her, an accident (or was it?) leads to her husband’s death and freedom. Can she risk a second marriage?
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Charles Barrington, Viscount Wareham, has always loved Lady Maria Loughbridge, but as a third son of a Duke, he knew he would not be considered as a suitor. Now she was marrying the Earl of Granville.
Maria had made a good marriage, capturing an Earl, everyone said so.
Unfortunately when Maria and Edmund left London for his Wiltshire estate, the marriage became impossible. Edmund's mother has been running Edmund's estates, and was not giving up the reins, not even allowing Maria to run the household as was her right as Edmund's wife.
The Dowager Countess proved to be a rude, sharp-tongued, bitter woman whom everyone was scared of. She hated Maria and humiliated her every chance she could, making Maria's life unbearable.
When Edmund dies, the Dowager Countess accuses Maria of killing him and it is up to Maria's family and friends to prove her innocence.
The Dowager Countess is a nasty piece of work, so well described that you want to fight Maria's battles for her.
Edmund was such a pathetic character that I wanted to shake him to wake him up to his duties as a husband and Earl.
Charles is a thoroughly nice gentleman and I'm glad he got his hea.
This is a well written enjoyable book and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Charles Barrington, Viscount of Wareham has known Lady Maria loughbridge since they were children and played together. He watched while she got married to Edmund Wollstonefort, Earl of Granville. The earl helped make her marriage a nightmare, along with his mother. He ended up dying and her mother-in-law blamed her and very vigorously. Charles and her family came to her defense.
The characters were wonderful and well developed, you could see the emotions changing as time went on. The plot was ever changing, the author did an excellent job of being well written and keeping your interest. Arietta Richmond has never disappointed. I enjoyed the time that they spent together after her mourning period was over. They kept making eyes at each other. I can hardly wait for the next one.

From Suffering to Joy

Lady Maria Granville has a spiteful domineering mother-in-law and a simpering husband. Meanwhile, Charles Wareham has loved her since childhood.

A lot happens to Maria. Much of it distasteful, brought on by spiteful gossip. Her husband dies, more accusations, and finally the guilty caught.

Arietta Richmond has such a gift for building up the characters. Even side characters are seemingly rounded out. She also shines a light on how restricted society was in Regency Britain. The classes were strictly defined as was propriety. What we would give no thought to today could bring scandal upon a woman, so women had to be very careful of their actions. It's all very interesting as the story is woven through the constraints of the era.

Again, this book in this series deserves a place opp n your reading list.

Will she ever be happy?
Married based on the Ton standards Maria finds herself in a horrible place and no hope for happiness. She has the mother-in-law from hell and a husband who will not stand up for her or to his mother. This story is so full of conflict and it was written in such a beautiful way. I so wanted for Maria to have a chance at having a happy life. Events do change the course of her life and Maria goes through all sorts of emotions. The story has danger, characters whom you can love and hate a love unknown, and a love unexpected. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Patience is a virtue

To marry for money and a title, a normal occurrence in the ton, is not what Maria thought it would be. Her mother in law is an old bitter woman that rules the house and her son. She is awful to Maria and makes her life miserable. How she finds happiness again makes this an interesting story.

I truly enjoyed this book, it was clean and sweet. I wanted to reach into the story and slap the Dowager Countess for how she treated her son's wife Maria. I loved that she got her happily ever after though, Maria deserved it!

Another good one

Enjoyable. The intrigue was decent, the scandal interesting, the plot holes ignorable. Not what I was expecting, which was good!
