Albert Gallatin Mackey was a medical doctor and Freemason who served as Grand Lecturer and Grand Secretary of The Grand Lodge of South Carolina, as well as Secretary General of the Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite for the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States.

This is the famous history of the masons written by one of it's preeminent historians. Mackey looks at the actual documentary evidence (something that is inherently tough to do with secret societies) and strips away much of the legend surround this group.

This book is somewhat informative and serves as a good tool for understanding the roots of Masonry and where its teachings and traditions stem from. This is not a complete history of Masonry, only a study of it's origins.
