The Rake Who Rescued Me

Rate this book
Dashing and rakish by day, secretive and daring by night, Reed Valentine, Duke of Keswick’s uncanny ability to lie at a moment’s notice makes him an ideal candidate to spy for His Majesty’s Secret Service. But now that the war is over, and Napoleon is exiled to the island of St. Helena, he finds himself adrift. The life of a wealthy nobleman isn’t enough to satisfy him. When the government tasks him with one last mission—to find out who is trying to kill Napoleon—Reed takes on the job with gusto. Disguising himself, he slips into the Romani world while convinced that one of them will know who was responsible for the attempt. Orelia finds herself charmed by the stranger in their midst. When he comes to her rescue, however, that infatuation quickly comes to an end. As far as Orelia is concerned, the Romanis are being used as scapegoats—as usual. She’s determined to prove Reed wrong. Together, they set out to find the truth. With their combined quick tongues and ability to slip in and out of society, it should be easy. But the more time spent together, the harder it becomes to understand—why can’t a duke and a poor gypsy girl be together? Will their wits be enough to carry them through their treacherous journey and bring them together, or will their differences and the danger force them apart?

A daring duke who spied for his country during the Napoleonic War finds himself in need of help from the Romani woman he recently rescued to complete his latest mission. I was happy to pick up a new to me author’s book featuring a class and race difference romance paired with a large dose of espionage adventure.

Orelia is half-Romani with the other half her long-gone father’s English blood. This makes her not enough to the rest of the Romani including her mother, but neither is she acceptable to the English. She pretends to tell fortunes when her mother is too drunk to leave their caravan wagon and this brings her into contact with a dashing gent who is more than he appears to be.
Reed is a wealthy, handsome duke and lately his mother has been throwing prospective brides at him right and left even encouraging the women to entrap him into matrimony. Reed prefers his freedom and his double life as a spy for the Crown. His latest mission has him investigating the attempted murder of Napoleon himself. If the late emperor dies in English custody, it might very well re-spark the war. The only clues so far lead to a band of Romani.
At first he simply wanted to rescue the pretty fortune teller from her abusive mother and the fate that was planned for her, but Orelia might be the help he needs to get answers. She turns out to be much more than that. They are so far out of each other’s social sphere, but there is surprising common ground besides the crackling attraction when they work together.

The Rake Who Rescued Me had a fun premise and romance promise that met my expectations when I picked this one up. There are anachronisms and great improbability, but at heart, it was a light story I found entertaining. Reed might have all the outward advantages, but he can’t appreciate what he’s got and is bored by it all until Orelia, who came from nothing and couldn’t even read when he found her, joins him. She can’t imagine the excessive wealth and power he simply takes for granted and she thoroughly understands where his mother is coming from even if the woman wants Orelia gone. I enjoyed seeing how Reed saw beauty and brains in Orelia when she didn’t and they helped each other. Reed learned a great deal how to treat people and consider their needs even as Orelia flourished under his tender care. I liked that they didn’t act on their attraction until later in the piece when there were other ties between them.

Kudos to the author for including a capable deaf character in Reed’s brother, Noah who ran the large ducal estate, backed him in a ride to rescue, and saw worth in Orelia from the start.

All in all, this was definitely a fairytale-esque story, but I was expecting it and enjoyed what I got. Those who want light and entertaining class difference historical romance should consider this one.

Hampshire, England 1815 Reed Valentine was a Duke, but grew bored quickly at his mundane life. That is why he had his brother taking care of estate business while he maintained his activities as a spy for the Crown! Unfortunately, the war was over and he only had one more small mission to complete. Find a villain that is thought to be a gypsy. So what does he do? Go to the Romani camp disguised of course and he ends up with beautiful half Romani/half English gypsy Orelia. There is an entire story in how that happened! Needing her to help him ferret out the suspects he takes her home and they begin their investigations. Of course, the unexpected happens and an attraction forms. But how can a gypsy and an English peer work together, much less have a romance? A delightful story that takes you through some intrigue, suspense and great characters as Samantha Holt can only conjure up! Cannot wait for hopefully Noah's story!!

4.5 STARS -- ENJOYABLE REGENCY-SET ADVENTURE-ROMANCE

Seventh Richest Man in England/Napoleonic War Veteran/Secret Agent Reed Valentine, Duke of Keswick is sent on One Final Mission once back home in England -- find out who might've supplied the poisoned wine given to the exiled Emperor Napoleon, and why. Reed, being told by his superiors that they suspect Gypsies are involved, reluctantly investigates in disguise, and there meets the beautiful half-Gypsy/half-English Orelia, who may be an inept fortuneteller, but is an extreme useful asset in getting the Romany to talk to him. After watching Orelia being abused by her drunken Mother and Stepfather, who want to sell her into marriage to mean-tempered but powerful member of their caravan, Reed offers to buy her for considerably more money...to help him catch the poisoners, of course! Offering to pay her for her help, and putting her up in one of the more distant rooms in his huge estate (scandalizing the servants thereby), the two undergo a series of adventures which demonstrates what an effective, if unconventional, investigating team they both are...as as well falling for each other, hard, in the process.

Among the headaches Reed and Orelia have to deal with is Reed's mother, who keeps throwing "appropriate" women at him in inappropriate ways in the hopes that he'll marry and settle down as His Grace...which Reed is very reluctant to do when the story begins, seriously considering making his deaf brother Noah, who has been handling the estates very well, thank you, in his absence, the heir. Their mother is horrified by that, believing that Noah's infirmity makes him unsuitable for the position -- and even more horrified at Reed's eagerness to go back out in the field and play Spy! She really doesn't like Orelia when she first meets her, either -- which makes the young Gypsy woman leave, only to be coaxed back by Reed to at least finish the case...while he figures out what he's going to do to manage their growing intimacy....

The book feels a bit "modern" for a Regency-set historical, though I can't put my finger on any specific anachronisms. But it really doesn't matter, because the story's a satisfying romance/adventure between two smart, attractive people from completely different worlds falling in love as they save the day -- and in the end, even Mother comes around, more or less....

This is a wonderful, romantic story that is rich in intrigue and suspense. Reed is charming, gallant, caring, amusing and resourceful. Orelia is smart, brave and strong. While investigating a matter for the crown, Reed ends up buying Orelia from her mother to save her from a bad marriage. He puts her to work helping him investigate her people, and the longer they work with each other, the more he discovers how amazing she is. They have fun with the parts they play, even though the situation is dangerous, and gradually become very close. They know that society will not welcome a Romani into it's folds, and Orelia is looking forward to her freedom, but that doesn't stop them from falling in love. There's an intense twist to the investigation that puts them at odds with their futures, but loyalty and love come together in the end. I loved this story and I hope that Noah will get himself a HEA too.

Reed Valentine, AKA The Duke of Keswick is tired of being hounded by his widowed mother as she wants him to settle down, choose a wife and produce an heir to the title as a dutiful son is expected to do.

However when a half Romani, half English girl named Orelia crosses his path Reed finds himself not only championing her against her own Mother but falling under the spell of her innocent beauty as well.

This is a somewhat typical wealthy man meets unsuitable woman romance with some atypical twists, suspense and mystery thrown in for good measure.

Not the best story that I have read by this author but certainly one I enjoyed from start to finish, even though it is not one that would entice me to read again.

Another well written page turning read from the author. The characters are well portrayed & I loved the charming Reed. The attraction between Reed & Orelia is there from their first meeting & as they work together it grows & grows. The pace of the story is also very good & flows extremely well & you are kept guessing as to who’s responsible for the attempts on Napoleon’s life. I did feel the ending was a little rushed but didn't detract from a very enjoyable read.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Intrigue Abounds

Truly unexpected. A gypsy and a duke? Never saw that one coming. Making the duke a spy for the British government plus giving him a deaf brother to add drama. Wow! Well done. Totally well thought out and unpredictable.

My Thoughts:

This latest offering by Samantha Holt has a fairytale like storyline.
This author continues to amaze me with her differing scenarios.
Oreo is finds herself in need of being rescued. Her drunken fortune telling mother intends to sell her to a despicable man within their gypsy band.

Along comes Reed to the rescue. This duke turned spy is on the trail of a would be assassin. This culprit has been trying to kill England's most famous prisoner, Napoleon Bonaparte. This most unlikely hero decide
S he needs Leslie's help in tracking down his man. His most likely suspect is after all a gypsy too.
Will this unlikely pair come together despite their differences in origin?
I loved this book and finished it in one sitting.

Reed has a job to do – find out the truth behind the attempt on Napoleon’s life, and whether the Romani (gypsies) were involved. This takes him to the beautiful young Romani woman, Orelia, just as her mother is about to ruin her life. Rescuing Orelia is more than just availing himself of a source of information; Reed soon finds out that Orelia is his match in every way that counts and solving the case is just the first step on their journey together.

The problem Orelia can’t get past is that Reed is a duke, with all the societal expectations and restrictions that she’s been raised to avoid at all costs. The lines they have to cross in order to even consider a relationship are nearly insurmountable, but the risks involved with finding the root of the conspiracy open up their eyes to what’s really important in life.

I really enjoyed these characters. Reed lacks the usual ducal arrogance (though he has plenty of personal charm and charisma) and Orelia has been raised with the freedom to really know herself, allowing her to transcend the underlying prejudices of the aristocracy yet still being able to blend in and represent both herself and her heritage well.

The mystery and suspense keep everything moving swiftly throughout the book, while the romance blossoms almost in the background until it can be ignored no longer. I couldn’t put this book down; it was a wonderful non-stop read for me. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Reed St. Vincent, Duke of Keswick, once a spy for the crown, has been given one last mission. He must find who is attempting to assassinate Napoleon, an act which would surely mean a return to war with the French. Based on information from the Secret Service, he goes to the Romani camp near his home to search for leads. While there he rescues Orelia from abuse from her mother’s lover and from being sold into a potentially more abusive marriage. How does he do this? Well, he buys her himself. The two of them team up to investigate and discover the assassins. They work well together and like each other. Even though they come from different worlds in society, they develop an easy friendship. That’s all that can be between them, or is it? Will they catch the bad guys? Is there a happily ever after in their adventure for either of them, both, together?

The Rake Who Rescued Me is a solid page-turner full of adventure, mystery, danger, lots of humor, and romance. Reed and Orelia have a wonderful chemistry, entertaining and funny. There is so much more to both of them beneath the surface. The story is fast paced and exciting with twists, turns and surprises right up the end. Samantha has another hit with this one, and I highly recommend it to fans of historical romance.

The Rake Who Rescued Me by Samantha Holt—this historical romance, set in Hampshire England in 1815, is filled with spies, intrigue and tender sensual moments. Reed Valentine, the Duke of Keswick, is a retired spy for His Majesty’s Secret Service and a veteran of the Napoleonic War. Reed returns home to resume his life as the seventh wealthiest man in England, but he is bored. The Government learns that there is a plot to assassinate Napoleon and believe the Romani are behind it. They turn to Reed to seek out the mastermind. This brings Reed to the nearby Romani encampment where he stumbles onto Orelia.

Orelia lives with her drunken mother and her latest boyfriend. Her life is a tumultuous one as she is considered an outcast since she is half English and Romani. On the night that Reed visits the camp, he witnesses Orelia being thrown out of her mother’s wagon as she learns that her mother sold her to another Romani man for 100 pounds. Reed intervenes and buys her instead and takes her home. He hires her to help me in his quest of uncovering the mastermind of the assassination plot.
Well done! I appreciated the way Ms. Holt blends intrigue and romance. Her characters, both main and supporting, are multi-dimensional. I’m impressed with her use of literary devices such as dialog and descriptive language. The banter between the main characters allow the reader to gain insight into their personalities and helps to build romantic tension to her plot. I’m fascinated with this book and am looking forward to reading others by Ms. Holt.

THE RAKE WHO RESCUED ME is a stand-alone historical romance. The romantic in me suggests that there should be a companion novel for Reed’s brother, Noah.

There is a modernity to the attitudes of Reed and Orelia – women and men working together as spies for the good of the government – that runs in juxtaposition to the Regency era that I thought just proved that people are the same no matter the period.

Orelia is at times strong, but vulnerable, a perfect picture of all of us kittens who want to roar. I love how Reed encourages her to roar! I love how they roar together!! This is a wonderful romance, sweet-spy adventure, and story of acceptance in differences (gypsies, disabilities, classifications - it doesn’t matter!).

I will always one-click a book available from Samantha Holt! I’m sure you heard me squee from here to where you live when I saw this one put online. Now, I’m going through my Kindle to see what I have next…. See you soon!

This book had intrigue, suspense, romance & endearing characters. Reed Valentine, Duke of Keswick, has been a spy for the Crown during the war & had turned the "Duke duties" over to his younger brother, Noah while he continued spying. Now the war is over & Reed is bored until the Crown contacts him with one final mission. His last mission is to find the person or group of gypsies attempting to murder Napoleon which would throw England back in the a war again. He begins his investigation & immediately meets Orelia, a lovely half English/half Romani in their gypsy camp. After a few conversations & unexpected dangers, Reed takes her home to start their investigations - he wants to prove the Romani gypsies guilty & she want to prove them innocent. Well, shocking but they find themselves attracted to one another along the way but a Romani Gypsy & a Duke - NEVER SAY IT! I highly recommend this great story to all historical romance readers & I personally can't wait for the next book - I hope it is Noah's story!

Reed Valentine is a Duke in name, but his estates have been run by his brother Noah. He has been a spy in France, for the crown of England. The war with Napoleon is over, and he is back home on his estates. He received a summons that he is to infiltrate a gypsy campsite just out of town. He puts on his disguise, and heads to the camp, but finds the fortune teller, who proceeds to tell his fortune, but he knows she is not gifted or is she ? She does not believe the gypsies are involved, since they would have no reason to start a war with France. He is out to prove that the head office information holds the way to find the traitor, she is out to show him he is wrong. The adventure begins. It was an interesting book, filled with plots, and mysteries, and romance. I enjoyed the characters, and the story very much. I loved the ending. It had some fun thrown in, and a few bad characters. It wove an espionage conspiracy that was filled with red herrings. I gave it 5 stars. It was a pleasant escape into Victorian Times.

Reed, the Duke of Keswick is told that gypsies are behind an attempt on Napoleon’s life, so he pays gypsy Orelia to help him investigate and determine who the culprits are. She doesn’t like that her people are accused of a crime she believes they did not commit once again and she agrees to work with Reed to prove their innocence. There are several disguises, subterfuge, and attempts on their lives as they chase one lead after another on the path to the truth. Along the way, they fall in love with each other. But when Reed is told the gypsy behind this has been caught and he goes to London to follow up on it, he pays Orelia and doesn’t ask her to stay, so it isn’t until she almost dies trying to find the traitor on her own that he realizes he can’t live without her. Plenty of suspense and humor in this Regency romance.

Good emotional build-up

I would have to say that I am a fan of Samantha Holt - her historical romance are great. Her books has kept me reading till the very end. Every story has its own style of adventure mixed with romance, and I love it. There is a small thing that has held me back with this one - the sensual scene between the H and h. I just can't grasp the idea of the h - at that time frame - being not innocent anymore. Its as if, losing your innocence is common like nowadays. Yes, the h is a Romani, but it still not an excuse for being a bit loose in morals though. Well, its just me - not sure though if that is actually common then with gypsies. Anyway, its not an overall "let down" though.

I loved this story and the characters. They were well described and developed nicely. The subcharacters made the story even better. Maybe there will be one more book about one of them? There was a great chemistry and passion. The twists and emotions makes it worth the read.
Samantha Holt always delivers a great story and this is one of them. It captivated me and it is engaging and enjoyable. This historical romance is sweet, adventurours, has drama and turns that are not expected.
Two absolutely different persons gets attracted to each other but can they make it. I like these historical romances especially when they are true to the timeperiod.
Worth the read and I can only recommend it to others.

Most Enjoyable!
A nicely written romantic story with a mystery thrown in.
Reed Valentine (fabulous name) works for His Majesty's Secret Service. There has been an attempt on Napoleon's life and the clues point to a Romani as the guilty party.
Reed is a master of disguises and tries to infiltrate the local Romani through Orelia. They work together and of course fall in love.
There are many twists and turns before the guilty party is uncovered but somewhere along the way I fell in love with these two characters, their personalities and the way they go about things.
Worth reading and most enjoyable.

This was an okay story

Reed buys Orelia from her mother rather than have her be bought by a Romani in her camp. To prevent war, they investigate assassination attempts on Napoleon. The plot was okay, the character development okay, the romance okay, no suspense. I didn't like it; I didn't dislike it; hence the 3 stars.

Sex: 1 scene
Language: 0 F words, 22 Lord's name in vain, 0 S words
Violence: fist fights, kidnapping, attempted murder, gunfight
Cliffhanger: no
Do I need to read books before this one: no
Would I read more of the series: no

Spies

Reed is a Duke who was a spy in France until Napoleon was captured. He is home now, but has been called to help find a potential assassin of Napoleon. He meets Orelia in a gypsy camp, and asks for her help. The story progresses from there. There is an interesting character in Noah, the Duke's deaf brother, and many scenes of Reed being a spy. The ending is sort of abrupt, but the there is a long epilogue. This is my first book by Holt, and I may read more.

Quick and lovely

This book was as easy read. I enjoyed Reed and Orelia's characters. This book flowed smoothly and kept me entertained. It was full of intrigue, love, and even some humour. I am glad I decided to read this book. I wish Reed's brother, Noah, would get a book. I really liked him, even if his character was not as developed.
